RE: Fuel tank and C of G
Ivan, I think you will be ok mounting the extra tanks behind the main tanks. Assuming the main tanks are on or near the cg, the moment arm of the extra tanks is very short and should not have a dramatic effect on cg. You would want to balance the jet with the aft tanks full as this would be the most aft cg configuration. You might also want to balance the jet without fuel in the aft tanks just to confirm it is still within the suggested cg range. You could either burn from the aft tanks first and deal with whatever forward (nose heavy) trim change occurs early in the flight (if any), or burn the main tanks first and minimize the cg shift, assuming you would land with at least some amount of fuel in the aft tanks. For what it's worth, I have two 20oz aux tanks on my A-10 mounted just forward of the main tanks. I feed out the aux tanks first and notice no cg change during the flight. Good luck, Craig

For those who have not attended SS before, you're going to love this flying site. A private jet airport with everything designed to be jet-friendly. Wide smooth runway, generous grass overuns in all directions, bushes to protect pilots and jets, no runway lights and no flight restrictions. Best of all, a bunch of friendly guys hosting and attending. Don't miss it! Craig

RE: Arming Auto Spoiler...
Very clever setup! David has a point concerning a potential go-around but the auto-spoiler feature also has it's advantages by instantly killing lift on touchdown and potentially preventing a bounce.....a likely reason for a go-around. If if does bounce, the spoilers auto-retract when the micro switch is released (I presume). I wonder if you could program-mix in a dis-arm function with throttle up? Craig

RE: Twin Turbine Jets, loosing 1 turbine
DubD and David are both correct. Losing one engine is normally only critical during takeoff and go-around when speed is low and power is high. Correcting promptly with opposite rudder will keep the jet controllable until a safe flying speed is achieved, just like with full-scale. No problems both times I lost an engine on takeoff with my A-10 using that procedure. It's not quite so critical with the F-18's closer spaced engines but still worthwhile to fly it properly. There is an excellent and informative article on this topic on the JPO website: http://www.jetpilots.org/ Look under "Members", then "Contrails on-line". The article is in the Spring 2010 issue starting on page 9. Craig

I will just keep them closed add a little weight to the slat to keep it flat maybe throw a heat gun at it to warm it up just a bit, not enough to damage anything. Thin wire through holes in the seat works well and is easily concealed, as others have suggested.

RE: Lipo Fire in Garage
ORIGINAL: David Searles OK, I'm officially concerned! So, can we now steer this thread more towards solutions. I can honestly say that I never charge my batteries unattended, but, I do & have left them installed in the jet while charging. My big concern now is the storage risk. Below is a photo of what my trailer typically looks like: six to eight jets, all containing three or more lipos! Even if I make the effort to remove all of the batteries, where the hell do you safely store 24 lipo batteries?! Put them all in one box or cabinet & it seems to me you've just created a battery bomb, ie one goes off & it triggers the other 23! I really would rather not have a battery go off and destroy every jet in my trailer, so it seems the storage solution needs to be external, and somehow compartmentalized so that one bad cell can't set the whole thing off. Suggestions? David S
Good question David.....and oh by the way, aren't some of the batteries in our cell phones, Ipads, laptops and other PDA's also LIPO's? What about them? What is the practical answer to dealing with this hazzard? I have already switched all my jet ECU's and Rx's to A123 but still have lots of foamy LIPO's around, in addition to the aforementioned PDA's. I want to be safe but now I'm not sure how. Craig

Or you can cover the servo area with a piece of ceramic heat blanket sold by BVM: http://shopbvmjets.com/zencart/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=8_60&products_id=30 I usually attach it to the fuselage with aluminum tape but that may be a little difficult since you have already applied the heat shield. RE: Skymaster Hinges
ORIGINAL: ozief16 Bill, I had similar probs on my 2m VJ. 2/3 hinges snapped, one during installation (with glue drying of course) and the second during radio setup. My recommendation: cut the hinges from the side with a Dremel (just to separate the rudder), and then use a soldering iron to melt the hinges out (I used sharpened brass tubing that just fit around the hinges and drilled them out, but that was a pain), and reinstall with Robarts (they are much more resilient and 'tight'). V/R Dave
+1 Those Skymaster hinges are poor/weak imitations of Robarts and have a history of failures. I would not risk using them. Do what Dave suggests and if necessary, cut away a larger area where the old hinge was and add a dowell or hardwood piece to drill and attach the new hinge. Here's a picture of how I did it on my Skymaster big Viper. Craig

RE: Something that I have to ask
ORIGINAL: VF84sluggo I've only been flying rc jets now for about 2 years, and still consider myself a jet newb. KY Jets last year was my first big event. It was good to put keyboard names with faces and get to know folks. I've had nothing but good help here, and in person, from the ''jet'' guys. But I also understood that rc jet flying is a pretty small sector of the hobby, and the core crowd knows each other and has been flying jets for years. Most of these guys didn't know me from Adam, and so I didn't expect to be treated like one of the ''club.'' So you hang out, ask some questions, maybe tell a joke or two, hold off on offering ''expert'' opinions on rc jet stuff, fly a little (to get some ''street cred'', as I was advised by a veteran that flies a big A-10), and next thing you know, it's all good. Just plain ol' common sense, whether it's the rc club or the hunting club. On the other hand, the sure fire way for a newb - in any endeavor - to encounter all kinds of ''A-holes'' and negative attitudes is for said newb to show up acting like they've been there, done that, got the t-shirt...and looking for an ego stroke by constantly reminding everyone how Sierra Hotel they are. Sluggo
Well said Randal. In the end, it's all about courtesy (which everyone deserves) and respect (which must be earned). Bottom line for me, treat others as you would like to be treated and don't worry about the rest. Craig PS: Hope you get Pcola jets going and it works for me this year.

RE: Help diagnosing AMT flameout (pics)
ORIGINAL: Kevin_W Did you see any puffs of smoke out the tailpipe when it flamed out? (sometimes impossible to see on cloudy or hazy days) Since you had just re-plumbed the fuel system my first suspicion is that you probably had some air trapped somewhere, or there was a leak in the system on the intake side of the fuel pump. If you have a leak in any of the lines between the main tanks and the UAT the UAT will usually end up full of air. It is also possible to have an air bubble trapped in either the UAT or the filter that will remain stationary until the plane enters a different attitude, or some kind of vibration breaks it free. After a new install I always run the engine up to full power the shake the filter (or the whole airplane) vigorously to be sure there are no trapped bubbles left in the fuel system.
Ditto what Kevin said. Every flameout I ever had with my AMT's (maybe half a dozen total over the years), could be traced to a fuel problem. The most common involved the UAT. The cap and center fitting need to be tightned with a pair of pliars until they bottom out. Sometimes a bubble will develop in the UAT, cause a flame out, and be gone after the fact. Sorry that you damaged your jet and hope you figure out the cause. Craig
