RE: MAN reports on Airtronics SD-10G 2.4Ghz radio system
ORIGINAL: Pippin There is another chap who would like to know how to operate the throttle stick inversely (like in some warplanes and other old civil aircraft). Thus, idle is at high throttle stick position, full throttle at the down stick position. I suggested useing the throttle curve menu and changing the values there. Or is there anothe way to change idle/full throttle position without abandon the idle cut off function?
The throttle curve idea is worth a try, however the trim woulds still be opposite to the throttle stick movement. I haven't tried it yet, but i'm wondering if the calibration routine would accept moving the stick down instead of up when it asks you to move the stick to max throttle. Just a thought.

RE: Test Stand
I use a folding carpenters saw horse which cost me $19.95 at the local discount hardware store. I use a dog chain to anchor it with a stake. It works very well and i have tested engines up to 1.40 2-stroke. You can see it in action here.

RE: Larger Revolver
I'm glad they made a larger Revolver but i agree that the suggested engines are not enough. In a nutshell, the new Revolver has a 4" larger wing span than the Venus II and is about the same weight. After flying the Venus II with a 1.20AX i wouldn't want anything less for the Revolver. An os 1.20AX with a 14x12 would really move. I would suggest the .95AX - 1.20AX in a 2-stroke and the OS 1.10a for an easy sport 4-stroke or YS 1.10-1.15 for some fun.

RE: O.S. Carburetor 61C 95AX
I'd like to know too. I don't know the ID but I'm guessing the OD will be the same as the .75 and 1.20AX @ 15mm. I'm thinking the the .95AX carb might work ok on the 1.20AX. The smaller venturi could improve the low end throttling and torque. Not that there's much wrong with the 1.20AX.

RE: Venus II
I briefly tached the 15x10 at 9,100rpm. The tuning is quite broad with that muffler and I haven't really peaked it yet. I'm still leaving it rich for a few flights until break-in is complete. I considered a 16x8 and have one on hand. I will try it next time out. The engine needs to be mounted 4 degrees below horizontal which centres the muffler within the cowl. The muffler is on a slight angle to clear the engine mount beams. The canister clears the cowl nicely but the exhaust flange needed a slight bit of filing away into a round profile so that it would not touch the cowl. I had no problems taxiing the plane with the toe-out.

RE: Venus II - Adding an adjustable stab worth the effort?
ORIGINAL: ARTP47 If I were to redue my Venus the only mod I would make is to lower the gas tank about 1 inch to help in outside maneuvers.
I agree with lowering the gas tank. I was considering an inverted 4-stroke for mine but decided against it because the needle valve was way below the centerline of the tank. I ended up with a 1.20AX mounted close to horizontally. It's actually -4 degrees to center the Jett muffler in the cowl. There's some pics in the Venus II thread.

RE: Airtronics SD10G for pattern
ORIGINAL: gaRCfield +1 for Airtronics servo recommendations - are there any with full nylon gear trains? It is worth saving up and buying the right servo once, rather than buying inexpensive ones now and better ones later.
I tried to find a nice Digital Airtronics servo with Nylon gears but they all seem to be metal gears. My radio with Futaba Digitals is very fast and precise. It's impressive to flick the stick so that it rebounds on the springs and watch the control surfaces follow the stick movements exactly. I'll probably go with JR servos next time around mainly because they use the same plug and neutral as the Airtronics. I'm using a DS821 on throttle and it works well.

I'll probably debut the Venus for it's first comp at Pitt Town in Nov.

RE: Venus II
I maidened the Venus II today and flew 3 flights between rain showers. It flies very well with only a click or two of trim required. I'm glad i went with the 1.20AX in the end. All that power is addictive and i probably wouldn't have been as pleased with my original plan of using a Webra .91. By the end of the 3rd flight, my new plane jitters had gone and i was really comfortable with it. I put it through a few sportsmans class manouvers and i performs very well. I'm looking forward to entering some comps with it. With a 15x10 it's almost too fast and it climbs to the moon. I really had to work on the landings. The plane wants to float forever and bounce on down the runway. I tried the suggested spoilerons and they work a treat. With them the plane sinks nicely with no change in pitch and sticks to the runway like there's velcro on the tires. The toe-out gave no problems at all. Another happy Venus II owner.

RE: Airtronics SD10G for pattern
I used my SD-10G for the first time today. It was a maiden flight for the radio and my Venus II and both went very well. Personally, i think the SD-10G the most comfortable radio i have ever used. The menu and programing functionality is excellent. I'm really happy with this radio.

RE: OS 75 AX Bisson Pitts muffler
I tried the .61 sized bisson on my .75AX and got 300rpm more than the stock muffler with an APC 14x6 @ 10,300. I only ran it on the test stand so i can't tell you how it will perform in the air. I can tell you it's much louder than the stock muffler.

RE: Venus II
After over 6 months on the building board i have finally found the time to finish my Venus II and plan to maiden her tommorrow, weather permitting. I was planning to use my Webra .91 but decided to go with the 1.20AX instead. I'm using a Turbo-Jett muffler which fits completely within the cowl. I used Dubro ball links on all control links and made my own pseudo carbon push rods by using some carbon tube over 4-40 threaded rod glued in with a small amount of gorilla glue. These are much stiffer than the metal rods and only add a few grams of weight. Servos are Futaba 9255's on the Ailerons and Elevators, 9151 on the Rudder. Power is provided by a PowerBox DigiSwitch and Fromeco 2600mAh LiOn pack. The dry weight is 3,900gm (8.59lb) The balance came out almost perfect. I only needed 15gm (1/2oz) of lead weight near the tail wheel to get it on the reccomended CofG. one thing that concerns me is that the landing gear has quite a bit of toe-out and i'm wondering if this will effect the taxiing at all?

That covering job is simply fantastic. You should be extremely proud. It's probably just personal taste, but to me that canopy looks a bit bulbous. I would trim it down to make the model look more streamlined.

RE: OS have just announced a 55cc gas engine
If you look closely at the carb you can just see Walbro cast into the alloy. It looks like a Walbro WY series to me. They are a round slide carb (as opposed to butterfly) and popular with the boat racers because it supposedly gives more power with better throttling. I guess it would be a first for an air engine.

RE: Thunder Tiger 130 Four Stroke
ORIGINAL: SpinnerRow Is the glow plug thread problem an isolated incident or something I need to be concerned about?
The glowplug thread problem is not an isolated incident. It has been reported on engines purchased in the USA, Australia and Singapore. It doesn't appear to effect every engine so perhaps it's was just one batch of cylinder heads that had the problem. If you're buying the engine from a store where you can handle the engine before buying, then i would defintely check the glow plug beforehand. If you can't check the engine and you get one with the problem then you can easily fix it if you have a glowplug tap. it is easy to extend the threads the required ammount and then the engine is a fine performer. Personally, i sold my engine because the Local importers and warranty agents treated me like i was an id10t when i brought it to their attention. Their arrogance left a bad taste in my mouth and i voted with my feet. I will never buy another TT engine.

RE: Prop Reamer for APC props used on OS 120AX
Timely thread, because only the other day i bought APC 15x10 and 16x8 props for my 1.20AX. I found the props were a tight fit on the shaft but could be fitted without reaming however they were quite difficult to remove so i used a reamer which only took off a hairs width and made them a nice fit. I don't know what brand my reamer is but it looks the same as these http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXK248&P=ML http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXG940&P=ML

RE: Thunder Tiger 130 Four Stroke
ORIGINAL: Pippin So, one could asked if saving a couple of bugs on these TT-engines is the best idea; apart from satisfying curiosity.
Probably not, because of the ammount of $$ i've spent buying replacement parts and a glow plug tap i've now spent more than i would have if i'd bought a Saito 1.25, OS 1.20, YS 1.00 or even an OS 2.00 I would say that 50% of my purchase decision was purely to satisfy my curiousity (most of my purchases are) over and above any real need for the engine. I was hoping it would fill a particular size/weight requirement in my fleet and it does to some extent, but every time I steer away from OS to try different brands I inevitably always find myself going back to OS.

RE: Help with ENYA 46-4C
You don't say if you have the tank vented to atmosphere? It doesn't need muffler pressure but the tank needs a vent so that it doesn't create a vacuum as fuel is drawn out. The vent should be on the top of the tank with a length of tubing routed to the bottom of the plane. This will allow air in but prevent fuel from escaping when inverted.
ORIGINAL: Broken Wings Maybe a Larger OS Alpha is coming soon.
Sounds like we're both hoping for the same thing. If OS released a 1.30 - 1.50 4-stroke that weighed in less that the current 1.20's i would be buying several.

RE: Thunder Tiger 130 Four Stroke
The all-up weight of TT is 4oz lighter than the OS 1.20E (inc muffler) and the TT has a few hundred rpm over the OS. I don't think it's a case of poor engineering. There is a manufacturing defect affecting some engines. Once corrected it's a decent engine. In terms of overall quality i rate the TT behind the OS and Saito but not by much. It's definately better than any of the other chinese 4-strokes (Magnum, ASP etc).

RE: Thunder Tiger 130 Four Stroke
If i were you i'd strip the engine and make sure none of that gunk went through the engine. My liner had a visible scratch which didn't look too deep but it could definately be felt with a finger. I replaced the liner and tapped the thread with a 1/4-32 tap and it's working well now. P.S. If you re-tap the thread, don't go all the way through as it will make the hole jagged (see my pics earlier in the thread). Run the tap through about 1/4 turn, test, repeat until the plug washer seats firmly.

RE: MAN reports on Airtronics SD-10G 2.4Ghz radio system
I had no luck with analogue throttle servos with mine and had to switch to the cheap DS821's wherever i used standard servos (mostly thottle duty). What brands of servo worked for you? I was using Futaba, someone else reported problems with Hitecs. Perhaps we should make a servo compatibility matrix for the 10 channel reciever. Digital retract servos aren't readily available. Futaba make a mini for up to .61 size models, but all other prands are analogue.
