RE: New Great Planes Escapade 61.
You don't say if your Escapade is nose heavy or tail heavy. If it is tail heavy, the manual says that 4" is a starting point and you can have the CofG as far back as 5". I currently have mine at 4 3/8" and was thinking to go back to 4 1/2". If it is nose heavy then you could try a lighter set of batteries. An ounce or 3 is no huge issue. Try to put the additional weight as far back (or forward) as possible.

RE: Why are helicopter glow engines so smoky????
Heli Fuels with 23% oil content are running low viscosity oils that are much thinner than the oils typically used on a fixed wing engine. The thinner oil burns faster, hence the increased oil content and subsequent smoke.

RE: New Great Planes Escapade 61.
I was running the NGH 17cc gasser in my Escapade but i removed that engine for another project and replaced it with an OS .65AX. I was planning on breaking in the .65 for another model. I thought the .65 would be on the verge of being too weak on the Escapade but the performance is surprising. I guess that is in-part, due to the overall weight being 2/3 pound lighter than the gasser setup. The plane flies much better with the .65 and the engine has no trouble hauling it around for sport flying and cruises on less that half throttle. There is more than ample power for loops and cuban 8's etc. It will climb vertical for a while but runs out of puff eventually. I actually prefer how the model flies now so i'm going to leave the .65 on it.

How loud is it with the pipe? My club has just introduced noise restrictions. I was all set to put together a Giant Big Stik with GT33 but now have reservations due to the noise. If the pipe is significantly quieter i may still go ahead and build one.

RE: Synthetic oils soluble in methanol besides klotz?
There are 2 Ester based synthetics that mix with Methanol. I use SPL avenger in my glow engines (http://www.splube.com). There is also Redline Alcohol Pre-Mix 2-stroke oil (http://www.redlineoil.com). I have a gallon of it but have not yet tried it. Then there are the more common PAG based oils such as coolpower and klotz.

I'd like to know too. I am considering an OS GT 33cc which i have been reading about how it's very difficult to hand start. I already have an Align starter and if it can start the OS 33 i'd buy the engine. At the moment i'm holding off because i don't want to have to spend extra $$ buying a larger starter.

RE: PROBLEMS WITH DLE 20CC AND OTHER SMALL GAS ENGINES??
As i understand it, A normal velocity stack is a cone shape and does just what the name says, increase the velocity of the air as it tries to squeeze through the narrowing venturi. The faster air mixes with the fuel better and improves the atomization. A side benefit on some engine designs (namely those with a piston or crankshaft porting) is that when there is a back pulse which would push air/fuel mixture back out of the carb where it would normally be lost, the extra length of the velocity stack works in part to protect that back pulse from the surrounding air flow so that it can be sucked back through the carb and not wasted. This device looks different because is narrows like a velocity stack but then it opens out. It must create some sort of negative pressure which helps with the fuel metering.

I'm thinking my next build will be Giant Big Stick with a 33 up front. I was going to go with the OS 33-GT but decided to sit back and watch that one for a while. The one drawback i see with the Mintor is the non-standard exhaust mounting.

RE: Larger version of the gp Super Skybolt
ORIGINAL: captain2 Although the DLE is not too long to fit, getting the throttle linkage to that rear carb a real PIA on the Skybolt......... ......The front carb NGH made it quite simple for the throttle, gives me the economy of gas, outpowers the OS by a bunch AND costs less.
+1 on the form factor of the NGH. The glow style really makes installation a snap. I have one of mine in a Great Planes Escapade .61 and it was literally a drop in fit. Aside from shaping the cowl cheek to clear the muffler the model required no modifications at all. I could switch it back to glow or (gasp) electric without anyone ever knowing it was once gas powered. I'm also experimenting with the Enya Gasoline glow plug in one of my NGH's. That takes the ignition and battery weight away and reduces the overall weight by 9oz which is a good thing.

I have the smaller one which i run on my NGH 17cc. It definitely takes the harshness out of the exhaust note and gives it a more bass'y tone. I don't know if it reduces the overall dB level by much at all, bit it's certainly more pleasurable when standing close to the engine.

RE: Larger version of the gp Super Skybolt
ORIGINAL: captain2 this the NGH GT17 gasser just installed on my GP Super Skybolt. Replacing an OS 91 4s, the plane does have some flights behind it. The GT17 mounted inverted instead of sideways using the same GP 60-120 adjustable mount. Fits well, and a lot neater, engine length is just right (5.8'') for the cowl. These pics from break-in, note that I also switched the gear for a bit more prop clearance. The OS was swinging a 14x7 APC, the 14x8 the recommended break-in prop but the NGH looks like it'll handle a 15x7/8 or 16x6 no problem. Haven't flown it quite yet, but expect the plane to be transformed with the 15 or 16'' props.
I have 2 of the NGH GT17's. They both turn a JXF Nylon 14x8 at 9,100 on the ground and unload to 10,100 in the air (confirmed by telemetry). They turn a Xoar wood 15x6 at 8,800 on the ground I haven't tested that prop in the air. I used to fly my Skybolt with an OS .91 Surpass II which turned a 14x6 at 9,800 and it was almost perfect but i always wanted a little more. The NGH should just about ideal. I thought about getting another Skybolt and putting my spare NGH into it. I'll take a 30cc sized Skybolt with a tunnel to take a canister muffler please.

RE: STIHL oil ?
w8ye, those Castrol oils you linked to are their regular motorcycle products. Unfortunately they are not the same as the Stihl HP Ultra.
ORIGINAL: TimBle As for lube recommendations, I say again, go to the nearest motorcycle dealer and ask for their best synthetic 2 stroke oil at the spare counter. This subject gets way too much airtime and few get a little too hot under the collar about it.
I've been testing a few oils in my small engines over the last few weeks. I tried Redline Racing, Motul 800 and Shell Racing X 2T. The latter 2 are high viscosity motorcycle oils designed for pre-mixing at 50:1 ratios. I found plenty of discussions amongst the motorcycling forums that these high viscocity oils in smaller engines below 125cc or at mixes richer than 50:1 are not the ideal choice. The Stihl oils seem to confirm that theory because they are much lower viscocity. Last weekend i said stuff it and went to my local Husqvarna chain saw dealer. I grabbed a bottle of the Husky 2-stroke XP oil which is imported from Sweden. I figured if husky say it's ok for their saws which work harder than my engines then it will be fine. I'm not going to subject myself to analysis paralysis any more. The Husqvarna oil costs 1/4 of any motorcycle oils. It's viscocity is much lower than the Motul and Shell oils i ran. I mixed a batch @ 30:1 and put it through my line trimmer and it worked really well so i'm looking forward to some flights with it this weekend.
ORIGINAL: jedijody Not sure what the issue is or would be........
There's no issue really. I've been researching available oils for the last few weeks and have to conclude the the HP Ultra looks to be the good stuff. I just thought it was ironic that the forum experts have often recommended not to use a TC-W3 oil in our engines and then go on to recommend an oil that is exactly that, albiet a re-badged product.
ORIGINAL: jedijody  Another company that uses the same or similar formula does the same thing, Hoo-Ray for Oz.
If you know of any other manufacturer that uses the same oil then please let us know.
