RE: 55 cc engine
ORIGINAL: Super08 Well done! I look forwards to your test results once you get it running. Are you going to get a weight once it is completed?
I will give the total weight, with and W/O muffler, prop size, oil type and ratio and rpm's. After I get some info, maybe useing Pe's chart I can give a HP. I expect it to be slighty heavier than the DL-55 because of the houseing being made from a solid billet, we'll just have to see. As far as useing the original hub, Its not that much work really to just make another one. I have not tried as of yet to get the old magnet out, but being both staked and locktited in there I really have some serious doubts about it. One thing I have been thinking about is making a muffle, but i'm not sure its really worth the effort. I can tell everyone this much, this has been both a learning experence and I have had a ball building this. Sure beats messing with a old greasy engine anyday.

RE: 55 cc engine
I have not posted in a while so here is a update to what is going on. Jody at Valley View gave me some very good advice I really needed, I was not aware of the 50 and 55 cylinders not being exchangable. So he has agreed to send me a cylinder to see if things will work. Guys I made a huge error in judgement in another thread towards Jody I have already made my piece with him, but I want the rest of you to know just what sort of a stand up person he really is. You can count on Valley View getting my business in the future for all my parts and needs. My bearings finally come in and I was able to assemble the crank assy. So for kicks I assembled the engine with the 50 CC cylinder& piston and all went well. I wanted to check things over for binding, clearance's, deck height and such. I was some what skeptical of the magnet I used in the hub, although it had a strong feel to it before removal from the tool it was in, it just didn't have the power to activate the hall sensor. So I will need to make another prop hub unless I can get the magnet out, which I doubt very seriously. I found whats called a NEODYMIUM Magnet which is one of the strongest type permanent magnets made, I ordered 10 of the little guys and should be here in a few days. Here is where I messed up, I think my magnet was plenty good enough, but it was to long for my needs so I ground it off, Bad idea, I knew somewhere in the back of my mind that it was a NONO to get a magnet hot, but the devil made me do it. Gotta blame someone don't I *LOL* So now the once mighty magnet is nothing more than a paper clip lifter. Just a minor setback, after I gather up the rest of my parts for this, then comes the final test will it run and how well. I plan on putting it on Utube for all to see, my son has agreed to help with the video end of it.

RE: Goldberg Extra 300
Its been too many planes ago for me to remember what I used in my Extra but it was either a 14 or 16 oz tank that much I do remember, but the brand slips my mind. I do know I had to do some remodeling to get it in there and on centerline with the spray bar. That bottom nose piece is on to sharp of a angle for its own good. I also put the whole thing on a removable plate in case I needed to get to it . With the YS 120 I can fly for a good 10 mins and still have lots of fuel left over, but I also don't fly it on full throttle either. Brian Is that a Ultra Sport with modified wing tips????

I used high temp silicon locktite (RED) and hose clamps this seemed to stop all my leaks. When I put the spring clamps on I didn't think they would seal the stiff tubing and I was right. Good luck.

RE: 55 cc engine
Hi captain stowed Yes I am doing this at home, But unfortunatly my work shop is also my place of business. I have owned and operated a Automotive Machine Shop for the last 20 some odd years. I myself am semi retired now due to a injury and I am very selective about what I take in anymore. As far as machines go, The main two machines I have used are a Lathe and a universal type milling machine. A couple type's of rotary tables on the mill and of course a precision vise and precision boreinghead. All sorts of radius cutters both inside and out. Some I had to make myself. It would be nice to have a small O.D. grinder for the bearing fits and such, my valve grinder just won't quite do the job, one of them close but no cigar sort of deals. But with a little care and time a person can sneek up on the bearing fits those kind of tolorances + or - .0002 of a inch. take a little time to get just right. Sounds crazy but bearings are ment to have just the right press fit or they can distort and cause premature wear. That goes for both inner and outer diameters. My mill is equiped with all the latest goodies I can add to it, XYZ readouts in .0002 inch increments. Power feeds on all four axis. I have always wanted a brand new mill so I got this one and all the tooling I could afford just last Jan to compliment my other machines. All I can say its a real sweetheart of a machine and deadly accurate. If I was going into the business of making these small engines a CNC would be a must but for what I do a CNC would be of no use to me at all. I posted one pic at the beginning of the rotary table on the mill, If I can I will post some others.

Thanks for that bit of info Jody , I was not aware the two would not interchange. The bore would not be any problem to fix, but the bolt pattern could lead to some issues I was not expecting. Thats what I get for building before I had the part in hand. How much difference is there between the 50 and the 55 bolt pattern. If there to much I will settle for the 50. Oh well like, steve said I already have plans for the next one *L* I now have all the, tooling plates, jigs and fixtures, blueprints and notes made so it wouldn't take that long to make another.

Heres a few more pics of the progress , the one pic is the hub holder I made for the DL-50 55 engine's I went with 3 bolts instead of the two, maybe a over kill but whats one more hole when your set up. I placed a cylinder on it so you folks can get a idea of what the finished product is going to look like the first go around. I still need to cut the key slot in the crank and add the magnet to the hub, drill the 2 holes for the hall sensor, but I have had enough for the day *L* I'll get back on it in the AM. Hope you enjoy the pics and please feel free to make comments.

Thanks for the suggestion TOM,I may just do that very thing next time around. Aussie Steeve was right when he said there addictive, so far I have had a ball making this [:D][:D] I went to a 3-W site and looked at the porting and its quite different than what I have seen in other engines, Off subject, I just sold a NIB 3-W 275-CS I got in trade to a fellow up in Montanna. Of course I didn't take it apart, but if the insides looks anything like the outside does It had to be a winner of a engine. I just didn't have anything large enough airframe to justify keeping it. Way to rich for my blood so to speak *L* Anyway I got started on the back half of the Crankcase (sorry no pics yet) but I should be able to get that finished up tomorrow depending on how I feel. I also contacted a engineer friend of mine I do work for and explained my delema on the bearing issues, He was good enough to do some looking and thought it shouldn't be a problem getting me just one or two bearings, I hope he is right. Next time around I will have the bearings in hand and build to fit them ,not depend on the bearing book only to find out you have to buy several to get just one. hope everyone is doing good and flying as much as possible.

Anyone that wants to get rid of there ST carbs that has not been trashed and are complete give me a PM, I will gladly take them off your hands . Like someone said in here earlier, I to have used the ST carb many times to replace a not so quality carb of a different make and had nothing but great a running engine afterwards. Heres a link to a pereivers fact sheet written some time ago it follows the instructs shown earlier with one difference, read carfully about what he says about the rotation of the spray bar, I have found this to be a fact. The older tigres had this in there instructions NIB but for some reason dropped it on the newer ones. http://home.wanadoo.nl/pereivers/supertigre-instructions.html

Can't tell if wasn't ment to be there from the get go and hides the hole completly. Of corse I add one to the other side as well to even it up.

RE: 55 cc engine
Hi guys ,here is the finished product,It actually looks to have come out so the rod will be on the centerline of the cylinder, Woo Hoo" I did sumpin right. I would like to hit on something I know we all have went thru at some time or another, you buy a new engine and it has some problems, sometimes major ones sometimes minor. Untill I starterd this deal I really never took a long hard look at what went into one of these simple little engines, Believe me there is alot more than what meets the eye at first glance. I have spent several days just doing the math and blue prints in this project and there seems to always be something that comes up to make me change my line of thinking, either not enough material or something. And I had something to look at and compare I can only imagine what it would be like to make one W/O anything just a thought in ones head. So next time you have a problem just remember what all has gone into one of these before you get really frustrated. I know some of the R&D is not as good as others are, but there is still alot even in the lesser grades of engines. The end result is something that will run for years and be mainly trouble free, at least thats my way of thinking. anyway I just thought I would share a little bit of what really goes into one of these little things. Hope you enjoy the pics, more to come as soon as I get them.

For starters I would like to thank everyone for there kind words and encouragement on this little project. I was able to get the crankshaft material here locally , I opted to go with 4140. A little different cutting than that tough old Aluminum *L* but still better than Stainless or some of the other materials I have run into. Anyway with any luck I should have the mill work done tomorrow, then its wait for the rest of my materials to arrive. After talking with Aussie Steve he comfirmed what I had in mind. The crank will be a 2 piece I have not made the pin yet, I may rough it out and finish it after I have the rod bearings in hand and the rod made. anyway heres a few pics hope you like them.

RE: Goldberg Extra 300
I scratched a ultra sport 60 here a few years back, just before they released the kits again as you would know, anyway by the time I got the plans, canopy and wood I may have saved 35-40 bucks over a kit at that time. Not much of a savings considering I had to cut everything out myself. Now its about 80 with the price raise. So it may be worth it for certain planes, the Extra is one I always figure on changeing out the ABS and landing gear before I even start it. So that extra cost is just part of the deal. I almost always use Monokote also, UC is ok for some uses it may be a little easier to get around a bend, if it will stay there when your done is another question *L* Like maybe a fully sheeted wing and fuse where one would want to iron the covering on the whole thing the UC may be a better choice for some. I myself have not touched a large iron in over 20 yrs, just my trusty modified trim seal iron and a blow gun is all I use now days. My main complant with UC is the heat and the way it wrinkles up on a hot day. When I get a plane finished with Mono if the weather is warm I set it out in the sun for a few hours and let it do its thing then reshrink it, after that I seldom have wrinkle problems. Can't say the same for ultracoat. Back whern Goldberg owned oracover, it was made differently I have seen planes that was covered in it years ago and are still drum tight ,Technology I guess*L*

55 cc engine
I have give this some thought for several years now and finally made up my mine to make my own 55 CC engine. So far I have the front case half about finished. I still need to radius a few places. The rest of the material is on order for the back half. Since I don't have a CNC milling machine there are just some things that is not feasible to do with a conventional mill W/O making some very elaborate setups, so I decided to keep it somewhat simple. I'll post pics as things progress. I used a DL-50 for the mule but I will be making several changes to things. I may go with the 55 DL cylinder and piston, not sure yet. Since one of the changes is the crankshaft I will make my own crankshaft & rod.

RE: Goldberg Extra 300
Guys here is a little trick I use for covering that you may or may not want to try, after the basic color is done and shurnk drum tight. I cut out my designs to whatever shape I want for that particular build, but instead of breaking out the iron I grab my bottle of window cleaner and give it a spray then add my trim, Just a lite mist is enough. Then use a soft absorbent cloth and wipe it getting all the air and most of the cleaner out from under it. On compound curves I just keep working it down and say for something like a wing front edge I use my small trim iron on low heat to seal the front edge, don't add any heat to any place other than the very front edge or it can bubble up and make a real mess. With a little practice you can get a bubble free trim scheme, that looks like it was painted. I was skeptable when I was told about this myself, but it does work and work very well, but only if you use monokote covering material, ultra coat I know will not work as far as the others I don't know. The amonia in the cleaner activates the glue and after it dries overnight its there to stay actually I think it seals stronger than useing a iron. Caution don't be tempted to use any form of heat while the glass cleaner is still wet, I learned the hard way it makes a real mess. After things has dried good I then go around the edges on low heat and seal them down, this takes away any rough edges that can be felt when running your hand over the covering.

RE: Goldberg Extra 300
Its looks good to me also, Most of these I have had to cut more than the given line for a good fit. As a rule I cut it oversize and trim it up after the assembly is done for a perfect fit on the top wing saddle. I have found the frame work is not always spot on to the wing. after I get things where I want then I remove the canopy to paint and so forth. Of couse this only works if your useing screws to hold it to the framework. Unless your painting on the outside then it won't matter. That hatch has gave me more trouble getting to fit right than the whole build it seems. BTW your looking good can't wait to see the finished product. I'll say it again all your hard work is not in vain once you get that baby in the air it's hard to remember the time spent building it. Am I bias towards this plane well maybe just a little *LOL* Nows a good time to share a few things about the stock setup they show for the elevators, looks good on paper but thats about it, if your going to push the plane at all I strongly suggest putting in 2 elevators servos or at least go with 4-40 wire for the stock set up. The last two of these planes I made buy the book and both have had to be modified to get a solid no nonsense elevator. It may work fair with a 60 sized engine on the nose, but it flexes with a larger end engine. I had the single shaft supported and still had some flex in the wire. Some nyrod outer tube with metal inner rods has worked out great for a fix, also move the servos back to where Bigal126 did, not only shortens things up but also helps in the CG department for the larger end engines. While am at it the way they show to put the duel servos in the wing is sort of joke also, it will work, but its time consuming at the best, I use a 1/16"lite ply plate to hold the servo and rails for a nice flush mounted servo setup 4 screws and your done, of course they don't give that material with the kit but it should be available at your LHS if a person dosent already have it on hand.

16x8 APC 2 blade 15x6 or 8 3 blade, Alot depends of how strong your engine is and the altitude your flying at. Say your engine will turn a 2 bladed 16 X 8 APC at 8800 to 9 K then I would go with the 15x8 3 blade if not go with the lesser pitched prop hope this helps you out some. I myself have never tried the 3 bladed prop but I have seen several of them on the YS 120 size engines and boy do they sound sweet. Caution If you have a field that has a noise limit it may not pass the max requirements though.
ORIGINAL: jedijody So having never even touched the crankcase bolts on a DL engine you presume the factory doesn't use sealant on the mating surface. Then knowing that thousands of their engines are out there boring holes in the sky and leaving smiles on their owners faces day after day, you hear of a couple that possibly have some miniscule leak and now the factory either doesn't machine the case mating surface properly or use enough of the proper sealant. You must remember that novice people just getting into gas and or this engine line read these statements. Even though myself and other more intelligent individuals may know how to take such errant blanket statements, others with less experience or product knowledge may not. I would accept statements of inadequacy about an individual specimen but not ones that can shed an ill light on the entire product line that are unfounded and wholely untrue.
I asked a simple question and get jumped on by you, thanks for not anwering my question. I happen to own a automotive machine shop and build engines of all sort each day of the week ,so i'm not a novice of any sort. I didn't presume anything just asked if the factory used any sort of a sealant on the case havles and get a ration. Be sure I will never do any busniss with Valley View again thanks to your rudness and arrogant attitude.

RE: Goldberg Extra 300
First off thank you, And Nice catch dobra, I tried to edit my post, but for some reason it wouldn't let me , Yes the 13x8 prop was very small for a YS 120 indeed, when I first built the plane I had a OS 91 FX and bisson pitts muff in it. It flew the plane fair, but up lines was less than desirable and overall flying was not real crisp if you know what I mean, so I opted for the YS, the AUW come in less than 9lbs with the 91. The YS pushed it to the 9.5 mark dry of course. I made some mods for the tank to be able to get it in there, If memory serves me correct a 14 oz tank. I know it was a tight squeeze to shoehorn it in there. Since the plane came out tail heavy with the 91 I had to add some nose weight bolted to the engine mount that also went away with the addition of the YS. The stock mount broke with one small prop strike at idle in the grass no less, I made a light Alum mount for the YS, I was able to use the muffler tube holes for fuel dots, Special ones I that I made, enlarged the cowl opening and you would never know there has been a engine change now.The plane now sports a 16X8 APC with unlimited vertical, What a combo as a rule half throttle is more than enough to do anything I want. Doing away with the single servo and linkage for the elevators IMO is a smart move ,even going to 4-40 wire the linkage is just to flimsy for my taste. Looking forward to the video.

RE: Goldberg Extra 300
If your plane is not to heavy and has been laterally balanced you should not have any tip stalls on a landing. All planes will drop out if flown slow enough, but its nice to have both wings drop at the same time. My plane seems to just mush forward when slowed down to much in the air, what I call porpoiseing. This was done at a straight and level flight, i'm sure if any slight turn was involved one wing would have dropped first. My AUW is 9.5 lbs with a YS 120 in the nose and 2 elevator servos. If I was to change the gear to Alum I could get it a few oz's lighter ,but it flys and lands great the way it is.

mstam1971 I too bought from DLUSA maybe one of the last 50's in stock, and its still under warranty, but if I have any problems I guess i'm just SOL as far as a warranty goes. Makes ya feel all warm and fuzzy don't it. At the time Valley View didn't have any 50's in stock where DLUSA did and I thought Bob was in it for the long haul. Oh well I usually always do my own work on all my engines anyway, but it would have been nice to have the cushion there just in case of a major prob. I thought you wanted to upgrade from stock parts, but glad that Jody has you fixed up. TMB said they had a complete line of DL parts in one of there posts here, and you say they don't Hummmmmmmmm maybe they have got the cart in front of the horse??? Joe I don't have enough time on my engine yet to see any oil leakage from anywhere, but now you have me wondering if this is a problem that all of them have sooner or later? I see that Jody seals up the crankcase halfs when reassembling, I presume the factory doesn't do this.

Where you have the mark on the pic the ring lands are a smaller Dia than the rest of the piston, this will not harm the running of your engine at all just make sure the ring groove is not damaged so the ring is not sticking in the groove, I would maybe take a small jewlers file to the spot and see if there is any high spots, remove them if there is any. rehone the cyl a tad and put it back together. I got a new ring from Frank Bowman for my DL 50 still in the package (long story there) I feel his rings are far better than factory and as a rule less money to boot.

I'm adding my name to this as well GB made some very good planes ,its a shame us kitbuilders are looseing out on so many of our favorite kits. The Extra 300 and the Sukhoi are two that I will miss the most. My hanger will never be W/O either of these planes as long as I can still build.
