RE: How to avoid purchasing a fake DLE Engines
A copy is when two different brand name items can interchange parts. DLE has been ripping off more ideas and different folks for some time now W/O paying any dues to do so. So this is very amusing to me for them to get caught with there pants down so to speak[:D][:D]

stevehookem Do not mess with trying to convert. It's a constant hassle. Even if it does work, you won't have the reliabilty of just putting on a gas motor. Wait for the DA. It will be worth it. And just why is a properly converted engine a constant hassle and less reliable than anything else?

RE: powering my edge 540
The cooling fins are a little on the small side for the Mokies to run on gas due to the higher heats involved. Plus they don't have needle bearings on the rod ends and you will need to run a higher oil to gas ratio like 20-1, but I have converted a couple from glow to gas and so far they have been fine. But keep in mind a person needs very good baffling to keep the engine cool, also Unless you can do your own work as a rule you would be better off just buying an engine already set up for gas to start with.

RE: skybolt
I flew mine with a glow powered ST-90K with more than enough authority. The gas ST-90 versions should be more than adequate For most if not all the sport type flying the airplane is capable of doing,. Plus the weight factor is very attractive as compared to the other engines listed so far.

RE: Gas/oil compromise?
When Jody and Tom used to frequent this forum, way back when, I picked up on one item they both said and that was 32-1 from birth to death on any engine. I have followed that recommendation for years and never had an oil related issue yet. The tiny bit of extra oil is not really noticeable when cleaning off the plane. As a rule I don't state whats the best oil because of the previous statements already made in this thread, But here are a few of the more popular oils Stile ultra, Red line, are rated very high with the users here for a Synthetic and the penzoil air cooled seems to be about the favorite for a mineral oil. I have used them all and never had any problems what so ever.

RE: Bowman ring question
As a rule an engine with 2 rings are more inline with an industrial application like the Zens are and are prone to last a very long time. Granted the extra ring has some extra drag and can cost a little performance. The idea of using just one ring in the top groove is fine, but it makes me wonder how much crap and crud will get trapped in the lower ring groove over time and maybe create it's own set of issue's down the road. Myself depending on how much use the engine has on it now would dictate weather I replaced just the top ring or both.

RE: Piston build up, time to learn more from the masters...
Hi , I have to agree the oil is in question. Other than that it looks to be normal to me except the exploded view. However all is not lost you can actually fix that engine way cheaper than buying a new one. The parts add up to about 160.00-170.00 W/O any discounts from Tower so it could be less, and will give you basically a brand new engine if you do your own work.

RE: Goldberg Extra 300
Do as you wish Grey Beard but your analogy is incorrect, your not considering the weight factor or prop blast against the control surfaces due to the larger props from a larger engine no matter what pitch you use. Like I said there is no sense in using a inferior servo with today's good cheap servos at hand for not much more money. The day's of the S-148 or the very high dollar servo is over were not living in the 70's anymore. I suppose you have never heard of or even thought of Preventive Maintenance.

RE: Goldberg Extra 300
When choosing servos I look at the overall picture, what type of plane are they going in,what engine will be used, what type of flying will the plane be used for and how large are the control surfaces, AUW of the plane and so forth. Both the GB Extra and Sukhoi called for S-148 which worked ok in stock form and the smaller end engine's. But add more engine and see what happens. The extra speed and air going over the control surfaces play haveck and a person finds out real quick the plane no longer flies as it did. An up grade is necessary to the servos to get it back in shape to hold the extra pressure and maybe even the control rods. There are way to many cheap good hi-torque servo's on the market now for a person to skimp if there is a question about servo's, it is not like it was when both of these plane's was introduced.

RE: Goldberg Extra 300
Karol I still use a couple of stand oz in mine 2 for the elev and If I remember right one on the throttle. The rudder and ailerons I went a little more grunt on especially with the pull pull set up. I see the GB Sukhoi was mentioned *S* I still have two of them. One is pristine(BLU&WHITE) and has only a very few flights on it and the other is been flown allot but still looks good(BLACK&WHITE), it wound up with a 30 DLE and that's just to much engine weight wise for it I feel. The plane flew the best with an 160 OS 2 stroke. BTW I did change out the silver canopy for a clear one as soon as it came in..We had a little issue with the paint on the original one *LOL* I also finished the bottom blue stripes on the elevators too. As far as the 2 planes flying the same they don't! The early model Sukhoi was famous for dropping a wing on landings and it didn't really care which one, sort of hard to watch for. Now the later improved kit with the gear in the fuse and the different wing design is much better for not wanting to drop a wing at slower speeds. Those two planes (Extra&Suk)do fly close to each other I would give each there own depending on what maneuver a person is doing at the time. I have Allot of plane's more than most but the GB Sukhoi is still by far one of the best if not the best to do a blender.

Swifty that is what I did with mine, I moved all the the servos back to the last bay which made the CG dead on. The weak and flimsy Y control rods won't hold a smaller size engine let alone a 120 size.

colmo-RCU Nice plane and I too thank you for sharing The more a person flies the GB Extra it seem's the better it gets. I was able to pick up a partial built fuse with a glass cowling for next to nothing, Since I still have 1-2 sets of plans and the rib lay out I can scratch the rest of it W/O much trouble. I also have the 120 YS-SC in my flying model and feel it is a great combo.

RE: School Me on Fixing My DLE 20 With a Bent Crank
If you have any runout of the hub shaft, as a rule that means the threads have been bent on the snout of the crankshaft, Yes they can be straightened but for my money I wouldn't waste the time.It can and will set up a high stress area that can break and loose the hub, prop and spinner in one piece .I don't care to much to be ducking these sort of items myself, but maybe some do *L* The hub & bolt has locktite on it and they don't come off quite as easy as one might think the first time around, good luck useing a plastic hammer I had to make a special puller myself as seen in the pic. Just to get the hub bolt loose, then I was able to get a puller on the hub to extract it. Other than the locktite the engine comes apart just like any other 2 stroke. Oh and after a durt Nap that has bent things I would at least change out the front bearing if not both.

I have been useing AVG for several years W/O any issues untill about a week or so ago and only on RCU. Yesterday I couldn't even get into the forums to post or read W/O shutting AVG off for a few mins which I don't care to do. I like you have a anti virus program to protect my comp and it's contents, not to shut it off just to get into a web site. Since things work fine at any other place I go to I won't be changeing anything in or on my comp just to get in here, so I suggest that RCU get there act together and fix the problem before they wake up to find out nobodys home. Just my 2 cents for what it's worth.

RE: DLE 55 Crank Broke in Flight
Sorry there isn't a thing you can do about poor metalurgy. BTW I have at least 2or 3 cranks from the dle 55 engines here thats brand new. I couldn't use the cranks but wanted the rods and bearings from the assy. No way in Heck can you apply enough pressure to the spinner bolt to ever to break the crank , now over tightening the hub bolt may have a bearing on things but I really don't think that was what the issue was. I agree with what w8ye said about the metalurgy being wrong, DLE dosen't make there cranks, there farmed in just like alot of the other parts of the engine are. I can see where they could get a batch of bad cranks or anything else for that matter. it's just that heat treatment is a little harder to spot than other items. I really doubt that DLE is going to do a hardness check on each crankshaft before assembly.

RE: Placement and horns
Yep I have been told if a person is useing the 2.4 radio not to worry much about the tried and proven rules of the old days. Get a interference detector and just see how much RF your getting even with a proper set up, it's still there somewhat. 2.4 just masked the condition just like PCM and while it does work for the most part it can bite you right when you don't need or want it. In my planes I follow old school as close as possible and so far have never had RF issues. Some plane just won't allow the 12-14 inch rule because of size, but I do the best I can to seperate the two items. So it's up to you what you do but I agree with Dan and follow what the manufactures have to say. BTW I had at one time alot of great music on 8 tracks.

RE: How often should we run our engines.
Myself I don't leave all that much in there so the new fuel can mix well with what was left. But I guess If a person wanted to they could remove the old fuel, again I feel this depends on just how long the fuel has been setting in the tank. If it appears to be somewhat on the order of Syrup, might well be a good idea to flush it out *L*

RE: How often should we run our engines.
Most of todays good oils have fuel stabilizers in them, but if I am going to let an engine sit for any length of time I will add some Stabil to my Gas mix and run the engine. Leaving some in the tank when stored is always a very good idea and don't run the engine dry. So far I have not had any issues by doing this, but as a rule I am only letting an engine sit for maybe 4-6 months at the most. It would be a good idea to get down the stored engines every so often and run them just to make sure things are in good working order and stay that way. As a rule during the winter months off I recycle the batteries at least once and that for me is a good time to put a fire in the engine.

RE: Goldberg Extra 300
Myself I would still look for a warped or twisted wing, I Looked at the plans again and it was as I thought , there is zero degrees incidence , with the exception of the 2 degrees right thrust offset of the engine. Which is about the norm for most. Like Karol said go back to the basics and recheck everything ,it should be very easy to spot.

RE: Goldberg Extra 300
Just a quick question does the plane always drop the same wing and what size of a prop are you useing on the 26? Although this plane happens to be one of the best all around flying planes ever designed in my book it is still and extra and will drop a wing if slowed down to much, almost all planes will, but if the following is correct it needs to be mighty slow for it to happen on the GB 300 I have said this many times over, it's the small plane that flies and acts like a 30 % I would check the plane for a warped wing, incidence and CG both ways this will cause the issue your having, at 10.5 lbs while on the heavy side you should still be able to walk the plane in like a trainer almost. Mine rocks the scales at 9.5 with a YS 120 in the nose and flies like it's on a wire. One other item you may want to check is the travel on the elevators to make sure there both the same, same for the airlerons. Karol has a gas engine in his and as far as I know dosen't have this issue, maybe he can chime in here for some better input. Oh course they do fly alot different than a spad and some common rules do apply when flying such a plane, one is to keep a tad more speed up on final, but not all that much. A person can always go out a little bit farther and then make there turn for final to bleed off more speed if needed.

RE: Nitro Gasoline Conversion
Hi Yes I split the vent line for double duty as the pulse and still vents, seem to work fine. I figured the area of the glow carb and the WT-499 although larger seem to fit the bill ok, A person might can go a tad smaller throat Dia and still have good Top RPM's, you need to remember your only feeding an 80 size engine per stroke, or even a carb with a accelerator pump I am told works good. I myself didn't see the need of it but some do. The manifold was not hard to do with the help of a lthe and milling machine, you can see if the pics I turned the exsisting manifold 90 degrees and made a retsiner to rebolt things back into place to hold it all together.
