RE: Bates 106
ORIGINAL: samparfitt John, I don't claim to be an expert on this but, on my limited experience, it seems to be OK to CA laser cut parts. I say limited because I just about, exclusively, use carpenters glue to secure parts together. On parts that sometimes need to be assembled vertically to the table, ie rudder, elevators, I'll use CA but will go back and re-enforce the joint with a dab of carpenter's glue or epoxy. What I do is 'over kill' in that I worry about a secure joint using CA since the joint needs to be a tight fit and all my joints do not always follow that pattern so I add additional glue. I have no hard facts on my builds but they are usually heavy but they also seem to be very durable: I've done some dumb things while flying and the plane seems to hold up remarkably well, compared to other pilot's mistakes. I don't claim to be a structural engineer and maybe these joints are a small percentage of the total strength of the structure when you count in the exoskeleton making up the sheeting, fiberglass cloth and resin. I kind of follow iron works grumman's aircraft philosophy for bringing back their pilots in their planes and able to take aircraft carrier landings. I guess a good test would be to CA a couple laser cut scrap pieces together and 'bench test' it's strength and then base your decisions on that. I've always liked the looks of the vampire: very nice 'lines'.
THANKS Sam ,Shall be using white glue almost every where, CA with me is a problem only have to get near and get a skin reaction ,I shall give it a light sand, Just have to tap the balsa ribs and carbon floats off, THANKS also to ACDii.
ORIGINAL: WacoNut I would start at 28% MAC, measure the chord and set the balance to 28% back from the L/E. This should put you to the safe side of the balance range then move back as needed after test flying. You will probably wind up around 30-31% in the end. Later!! RE: Galeb G2 - new jet made in Serbia
ORIGINAL: mirce In last ten days many things happened with this project. I exchanged more than 15 mails with Ali, and he told me many interesting things. Ali have an amazing experience, so any advice is very important to me. Thank you Ali... Man I needed to make the wings of Styrofoam canceled the cooperation, so I returned to plan to made constructive wing. I need to draw again plans, but constructive wings are for me best option. Few days ago I visit our sport airport and take down all measure I need to made final drawings for fuselage, wings and tail section. When I come home and comparing measures I was very pleased when saw how much my drawings are precise. With measure I take from airplane, I have now all I need to start making wing and elevator. In meantime, I made all ribs for fuselage. This are ribs which I drew from JPG's I get for Galeb G2. I have invested a lot of work to set all parameters for fuselage. Of course, this is just first step, I must work on fuselage, and all I made to draw back on plan. For now it look like this: For ribs I made crutch...
ORIGINAL: jcaspar1 I am going to be a beginner all over again. Started 22 years ago when I bought a Midwest Aerostar 40 while in the first year of medschool. Figured it would take me a year to build, but had it done in a month. Moved the OS FP 40 to a Supersportster and in just over a year graduated to a Goldberg Super Chipmunk. Still have all three planes and after 6 years of not flying, have cleaned up the Chipmunk and am going to give it a go again this week. After 20 years and over 120 flights, I still love this old bird. Along with the B-25, I also ordered all the parts for the C-45 from Ziroli. I ordered a full wood kit from PCK but it will be 5-6 weeks for delivery. No rush as it's a 'next winter' project. The gear is robarts and I'll be using G-38's. I'll probably make the center wing, removable from the fuse.
ORIGINAL: samparfitt Hey John, 'no rest for the wicked'. I'm preparing for next winter, already: Just bought some ziroli 118'' B-25 gear and have a new set of C-45 twin beech gear: also just ordered all the plans, etc from ziroli for these two planes. I've already got a C-45 but she's 17 years old (also got a ziroli P-51 kit on the shelf: Ziroli should be updating their web site for the B model as I saw the prototype FG fuse, last summer). Well, it should be pretty warm down there since tomorrow is the first day of summer for ya'! I'm looking forward to tomorrow as the days will finally start getting longer. RE: CARF-Models P-47 Thunderbolt
ORIGINAL: wojtek thanks for the reply John ! ... I was wondering which hinges you used and how ... I think i will use a nelson piano hinge all around , but most of it will be cosmetic, except for the central sections where it will attach, yet allow the curved surfaces to pivot .. Voy
HI VOY You have to be careful that the hing do not bind even mine tend to just a bit I think sam only used one and you have to put your hinges on before you cut the flaps all the way through if you find sams thread he give very detailed details [:D][:D]Not sure about the piano hinge with the compound curve mine are 1/4 scale nylon screwed to the ply ring and 2mm bolts through the flap, Before you place you servo make sure they clear the front dome as mine are very close, Mounting blocks leave them attatched untill you get you ply ring in place and and glued to the cowl then cut the mounts off it keep every thing in line. By the looks of one of your pics, I see you are setting up working cowl flaps ... if so, i'm curious as to what hinging method you are using ?? RE: MOKI RADIAL Care and Maintenence
ORIGINAL: goodinmw OK Guys, After being weathered out last couple weekends, I was finally able to get my Corsair and Moki 150 out for test fights- and it runs beautifully with the mod I made (detailed back on 11/11/11). Three flights about 50 minutes total time, with reliable throttle response, from idle to wot, #3 cylinder running to temp, and no goo coming from #3 exhaust, and #3 plug now dry. Starting is a bit different- the engine seems to struggle a little to run until the engine warms up a bit- 20-30 seconds maybe, but once it warms and comes up to speed it's wonderful. Engine now pulling strong, my buddies say plane has picked up 20-30 mph level flight and plenty of power to climb. Dialed in a little more pitch as well on my 26in dia 3 blade solo propeller. I'm happy enough with the 150's performance now that I feel I can go ahead with a B-25 desgined around a pair of 150s, will be a while, but at least I know I can make the 150 work the way I want it to.
