RE: nontest 09.
Beautiful job there hkbii! (Dunno what else to call you without a first name.) Those are some really beautiful, flowing curves you've conjured up. Keep up the good work and I can't wait to watch it come together.[:D] The only worry I have is that it looks like you've got a bunch of wood in it already. Ya gotta be very frugal with the structure to reach 12 oz with 4 channels of radio and a couple oz. of engine & prop. Hopefully there's no extra glue holding those beautiful parts together.:) Milton ps: With your drawing and building talent, you should start (if you haven't done it already) working with CAD. You'll find it's well worth the effort. Then you can send your designs in to a magazine and receive maximum payment for your work. I'm just sayin'....[;)]

RE: Queen Bee first aid...
Cool stuff Mr. C! More important to me than 6x3 rpm's is how fast it will turn a 7x3 and how well it idles and accelerates. I have an almost new Q.B. that I want (someday) to try one of my Medallion .09 heads and a 7x3 on for a light, old-timer style airplane with ailerons. I luv those slow, cross-controlled, steep approaches with the sticks in the corners.[:D]

RE: Possible Perfect PeeWee Plane?
Yep, there were a few juices were flowing Steve but actually there's a bit of bribery involved. Boss man don't know it yet but he's buying me a nifty new tailstock turret toolholder for my lathe.[:D] Here's a pic after finishing up the covering. He's a British emigrant so I whipped up a couple WWII era British roundels flanked by his initials to add some color. You wouldn't believe how plain & ugly it was with the electric motor installed so I took it off and stuck the PeeWee back on with a bit of servo tape to make it look more natural for the pic.[:)] I was going to give it a test hop before dark but the brand-new HS-55 on the elevator began making funny noises and slowed WAY down. The longer I cycled it back & forth, the slower it got.

RE: Possible Perfect PeeWee Plane?
I forgot to mention that it came in at 7.5 oz (with brushless motor & LiPo) which isn't as light as I thought it would be plus the CG is a little too far back. The CG and some of the weight issue was due to the covering they sent. It's their Lo-Temp PolyCover which to me looks and works like MonoKote; maybe a tiny bit lighter. Not a good choice for this plane. It was way too powerful for the light structure of the h/stab & wing. I had to work pretty hard de-warping both. The very light trailing edge warped upwards after shrinking the wing covering. I'd recommend covering it with SoLite if anyone decides to build one of these. That'd help with the CG and the warping. If a PeeWee is used, I'd move the firewall forward as well to help with the CG.

Possible Perfect PeeWee Plane?
Hello forum. It's been a while since I've posted any balsa manipulation. This certainly isn't an original design but I figured I'd post it here anyway. Even though it will actually be powered by a Potensky brushless outrunner, it looks like a perfect match for a Pee Wee .020. I stuck one on the firewall with 2-sided tape and it sure looks perfect! It's got 192 sq. in. and the weight's supposed to be 6 - 8 oz. with electric power. Surely it'd weigh in on the lower end of those figures with a Pee Wee, micro radio gear and a 110 NiMH battery. If so, it should be big fun. It's a USA made kit by Tom Hunt/Aero Craft up in NY state. Great wood, clean laser cutting and a really nice instruction manual...all for 28 bucks! It's actually a "contract" job for my boss at work. He bought the Micro Telemaster package deal at Hobby Lobby, started on it, got frustrated and threw it at me to finish. It's my first kit build in a long, long time and was a bit ticklish to get to this stage. He had the fuselage bent in 3 directions, the wing center rib angles all screwed up, the wing tips way off and the stab L.E. looked like a snake.[8|] I had to soak the wing roots in nitro to dissolve the CA and release the ribs to correct that problem; break loose the firewall and a couple fuselage joints to get it back reasonably straight and and re-do the stab to get it straight. Man, I hope I can remember how to cover! I'll post some pics when it's finished and also give a flight report.

The silicone tubing will then stay on.

The tapered wing would be fine but dihedral would give you fits. The rudder /thrustline offset required to keep good line tension would cause yaw induced rolling. The roll would change with airspeed which would really be fun.;) I've seen u/c scale models with dihedral but I'm betting it was retained for scale points only.

RE: S.M.A.L.L. Fun Fly
Yep, we missed you Hollis. See you next year for sure, eh? It was great to see Brian S. again and meet his son Nathan. He's a sharp kid for sure. (Chip off the 'ol block, eh?) He was having a great time and learned to fly with Eddie W.'s excellent tutelage. Brian & I had a big ol' time sitting around talking about anything & everything. I apologize Brian for not getting my lazy butt motivated enough for us to fly the 'Lizzie and Gyrator but I was having too much fun watching & talking to everybody else. It was great meeting & talking to Troy B. (Tee Bee) from Texas; he's a fine feller & Cox aficianado of the highest order. You Carolina Crew guys better look out If he ever comes to a reedie race. He makes those reedies SING! I'll keep working on him 'til he gets a throttled Tee Dee and some landing gear on one of his Pongs. By the way Troy, the Spin Doctor autogyro actually wasn't mine (other than the engine). It was designed & built by the late Brian Pate; my best 'ol flyin' buddy for 27 yrs. It was published in the Aug. '04 Flying Models magazine. It was hanging in my workshop when he died in '07 and I decided to fly it at Little Rock this year as a memorial to him. It was good to do some flying after a 2 year layoff. Steve S., Dale and crew did a great job of running things; it's not easy making everything run so smoothly with no hassles from anyone. Also, I can't thank Steve & friends enough for clearing a spot for me under their tents. I couldn't have survived in the sun without it. When things calmed down late, I saw some amazing things fly. There was a big Depron twin rotor autogyro that was absolutely astounding. It flew at a snail's pace and must have been light as a feather. Dunno who the pilot was but he put on quite a show with it. There was a painted yellow Depron (I'm pretty sure) Spacewalker with flaps that flew around smoothly at about 1.9 knots....amazing! Sparky's B-58 Hustler, C-130 parachute dropper, Pat Tritle's stuff, Thomas B's fleet... it goes on & on & on & on. Of course I can't go to a gathering without doing something stoopid; it's a tradition!:) I flew my little u/c reedie combat wing twice and both times it shut off for no apparent reason, high & upwind. My panicked run backwards trying to tighten the lines followed by a stumble and fall like a sack of potatoes was hilarious for all except me. Steve, Ken from Missouri, Gary Selman and others were sympathetic but laughed like a pack hyenas. Oh well, somebody's gotta provide the entertaiment!;) I hope someone puts up some more pics. I borrowed my daughter's niftty new camera but didn't fire a shot! (Idiot) Anyhoo, thanks all for a great time!

Robert, the UFO was flown often and did great! Very little wind at times and it would go way up and usually come down 50 - 100 feet from where it was launched. I used to poo-poo Cox RTF stuff until going to my 1st S.M.A.L.L. and seeing the UFO's and helicopters fly. They are GREAT! They were launching the 3 helis at the same time when I arrived Sat. morning. It's the 1st time I've ever seen 3 Pee Wees running well at the same time at the same place.;) A great time was had by all. Unfortunately situations wouldn't allow me to attend 3 days as in the past but next year I'm gonna do better. (More thoughts later, Kathy just yelled breakfast's ready...I LOVE breakfast.)

RE: Film Can Fuel Tank
After using (Fuji) film canister tanks for years, the only changes I'd make to my original drawing (thanks SGC!) would be to recommend a change from brass to copper tubing (brass corrodes and turns funky green after a while) and to recommend a periodic inspection (yearly?) to check for cracks between the 2 holes. I've made probably 30-40 of them and have had 2 that developed cracks. And no, there is no reason to add any sealant, tape, heat shrink or anything else to seal the cap. They don't leak.:) Also, drill a hole (1 1/4" holesaw) in a soft block of foam and stuff that in the fuselage. That insulates the tank from the buzzy vibes from 1/2A engines and really improves the running characteristics.

You can also "weld" up the crack with a pencil soldering iron. Play around with the temperature and practice on a hopelessly broken part and you'll soon find the point at which the plastic will flow back together but doesn't bubble up or burn. You can clip off the unused pressure fitting and use it for filler if needed. I've done this on 6 or 8 of them with reliable results. It's a little ugly but effective.
