RE: ground races?
Jesupslanding, you should come up to Ocala this sunday and run with us. We have a good time. I would also be interested in setting up airboat races that include running on land and the water. We should be able to do anything a real airboat can do. There is a place in Mims that we might be able to run at. I believe it is Loughman Lake Lodge. Caylen17, who has not been on RCU in a while, said the owner would let us run there. I will check it out one of these days. Dennis

RE: hydraulic controls
How is the testing coming along Greygoose? Were you able to freeze it? Pinky D Brain had a good idea if those shock cylinders are not too expensive. Your Dad could drill a small hole at each end, thread it, and put a pressure fitting on it from a nitro engine muffler.[8|] Dennis

RE: Rcbif's 31cc Ryobi Gasser Airboat Project
I would wait on the 1/8th plywood. You will be adding a lot of weight with all the equipment you have to add. Plus the weight you will add if you use fiberglass cloth and resin to seal the outside of your hull, and the resin for the inside of the hull. You need to make sure it is well sealed because that shipping plywood probably is not the of the best quality. Your boat is looking good. Dennis

RE: Velocity..the newest addition to the fleet.
Crispyspa could you show a closeup of one of the joints? That plastic may be the way to build solid hulls without costing an arm and a leg. Have you had any joints come apart or suffered any damage from hitting something? If so, how easy or hard is it to repair? That is a sharp looking hull. Dennis

RE: Videos from today...
Mr Cajun Gator, my boat would not handle good enough to compete after it was hit and rolled over. Once I got it straightened out and put twenty batterys on the bow like John did it started handling alot better. If it was handling this good saturday and sunday I might have picked up alot more points. As it is I dropped out of three races because I could not get it under control. I'm still working on getting it better. Dennis

RE: right front dips on plain?
I hope you used foam that is water resistant. Most expandable foams will soak up water which is the worst thing to have happen to the interior of your hull. Dennis

RE: hydraulic controls
A very low viscocity oil should work in the cold. You could also route the hydraulic line close by the engine to pick up some heat. Also insulate the lines from the wind and cold air as much as possible. I bet just keeping them out of the wind would make a big difference. Dennis

RE: 2009 RC Airboat race - OCT 23rd - 25th
A big "Thank You" to Hal, Rayette, Marty, Anne, and Billy McNett for a great time. I think the best thing about this weekend is the people involved in r/c airboating. The racing was fun, but the socializing and food could'nt be beat. The gumbo that Anne prepared for everyone was outstanding. I think that was a trick by the Cajun Gator crew. I ate so much gumbo and was only interested in finding somewhere to take a nap, that I did'nt care if I won or not. Thanks again for a great time. Dennis

RE: AquaCraft Alligator RTR
If you choose to increase engine size you should also consider widening the hull. I would think about 1.5 to 2 inches EACH side should work. I have been in the process of widening mine for ever it seems like. I want to widen mine so it will not flip so easily. Dennis

RE: AquaCraft Alligator RTR
I agree with WCB and Mr. Cajun Gator. I will check all the main components that you might expect to loosen up under normal operating conditions, but I very seldom check to see if the carb is tight because if it is loose the engine will not run worth a crap. I can not remember a carb coming off an engine of mine, but I can remember one getting loose and I knew about it immediately by how it was running. Be realistic. Who checks every bolt, screw, or nut before operating their model every time? Dennis

There is a thread on this site(airboats) that shows plans for a .46 size airboat. It is made of aircraft grade plywood of different thickness'. You can scale the plans to any size you want. Dennis

RE: Ducted fan build
On a propeller driven airboat the angle of the prop is important. As you said, if the prop(pusher setup) is angled down it will push the bow down. If up it will lift the bow. Most airboats run at/or close to 0 degrees angle. You may try the angle change or move anything you can towards the stern to lift the bow. Good luck and I hope you are better soon. Dennis

RE: HELP first scatch build
First mount everything on the boat. Set your balance point. If it is stern heavy move the heaviest thing you can forward and try again. Once you get the balance point set, try running it again. If it still plows try raising the end of the motor that the prop is mounted to. The other end of the motor is the NON prop end. If that does not work, shoot the @#$% thing. Just kidding. You may have to move the B.P. one way or the other to fix it. Do not go more than a few degrees with the motor above or below level or it could affect the handling. Dennis

RE: HELP first scatch build
The balance point should be between 30% - 35% from the stern. On a level surface use a small dowel or like object and use it to move your balance point to were you need it. Dennis

RE: 25-35 inch hull/kit
Stacked, no matter how you look at it, to go with a deep v or any inboard hydro you will have to spend $500.00 or more dollars to get anything with quality. You can get into the SI hydro for under $400.00. It will outrun and out last any inboard for comparable money. For your money you can't go wrong with the SI. And please do yourself a favor and don't be a smart@ss when people are only trying to help you. Dennis

RE: Dumas boat kits please look
Stacked, if you want a fast, fun boat with a minimum of hassle, go with the SI hydro. You will spend more time playing than fixing. In all the reading I've done on RCU I have not heard even one complaint against Selph Inflicted. If you want proof go on U-Tube and watch those boats scream across the water. I plan on buying one myself here soon. Dennis

RE: Hydro airboat...air or water rudder and why?
The above answers are correct. For precise control a water rudder is used. For scale airboats(sliding turns and running the hill) air rudders are used. For the type of use you want from your boat go with water rudders. All of the high speed hydro type boats(Selph-Inflicteds) that I have seen use the water rudder. Turning your engine upside down will cause you to have to be very carefull when starting so you don't flood the engine. Dennis

RE: Potential Newby with Questions
The reason you do not see more 4 strokes being used is the water damage factor. You WILL flip your boat at one point or another unless you are extemely lucky and you will probably bend valves in the engine since water does not compress very well. Trading for that BSB is not a bad idea. They are fun to run and you can use most any .40 - .60 engine on it. If you use the YS63 mount it with the carb pointing down and that should protect it some from the water. If the BSB deal falls through there is a .40 size plan on this Forum that would be a great first boat. It should be pretty easy for you to build if you have any wood working skills. You can ask any questions on here and you will get all the help you will need. Dennis

RE: nitro water cooled air boat 11cc k and b engine, i need help
The size hull you are talking about would take a .40 to .60 size engine. The engines you listed are .07 -.15 in size. The hull for that size engine would be much smaller. Also try to stay away from the OS LA engines. They run bushings instead of roller bearings and do not perform as well nor will they last as long. Also try to use Super Tiger engines or helicopter engines from other manufacturers. They tend to run cooler and should not overheat on you. They have bigger heads on them. Dennis

RE: Help? I'm just getting started
I know you put $400 as your limit, but you said reliable. You may want to look at RTR gas boats. They start around $700 but are much cheaper and way more reliable(more fun) to run in my opinion. You will find nitro fuel is around $25- $30 dollars a gallon and gas with 2 stroke oil is 1/10th of that. If you go to higher nitro fuel like 40% it is more like $50 a gallon. Gas boats are not quite as fast as some nitro boats but alot less hassle to operate. JMO. Dennis P.S.: Warehouse Hobbies is a good place to look for a quality starter boat.

RE: nitro water cooled air boat 11cc k and b engine, i need help
Crispyspa and Mr. Cajun Gator are both right. That engine is designed to operate at around 25,000 rpm. An air prop is not designed to run those rpm's unless you are talking about the special racing props for Quicky 500 type planes which is not going to work on this engine. A normal prop will probably explode at that high an rpm. You will have a better experience if you get a Super Tiger aircraft engine. Dennis
