RE: Fuse???
Mr Matney, I was checking out your wood/foam/glass "Dawg Goneit". That is a hell of a deal for $100! You must be doing this either for free or the love of pylon racing. I think I will put one or two of those on the christmas list. dan myer

RE: Fuse???
Hello, Do you know Gabrial Tahhan? He is an excellent pylon pilot who also lives in Venezuela. If you want to learn from someone local... I believe he is the man in your area - a really good guy who loves to race (excellent pilot who is very fast). Are you planning on building a 424 fuse from scratch? If so, the Viper is not a bad starting point as the configuration works very well and the moments of the nose to leading edge of wing to elevator hinge line are very good. What needs to be improved on the viper fuse is the strength of the nose and tail and landing gear block - there are many threads documenting these fixes. Another area for improvement is making the elevator/rudder linkage internal instead of exposed. Do not change the V-Tail angle. To get the Viper to really fly well, the Vtail incidence should be 0 to the fuse and motor. The wing needs just a touch of positive incidence (leading edge higher than training edge) to fly with no elevator trim assuming the center of balance is about 2 7/8" to 3". If you really want to see how to put togther a wood self built quickie, buy one of the quality 424 kits (non-composite) like the Seeker, Hurrikane or Vortex (there are also others that are very good). Good luck. dan

RE: EP LR1A Pogo
Now, I do completely agree that molding all glass fuses would be better. I prefer that type of construction as the models would build faster as well as be more robust. But again I need to stress that the crowd we are seeking is a group that flies models already constructed this way. For this reason alone, we need to maintain this type of construction for the EF-1 class.
Save the glass for after this event catches fire which I think just may happen. The original EP event should all be simple and totally spec including watt limiters IMO. The glass/composite should go to another whole class where power, props and speed is not limited to allow evolution and an outlet for the truly hard core electric speed freaks. You know that will eventually happen.
Workings on the plug right now. went to set the wing saddle to the Viper wing .I 3 wings and all 3 are different has any one run across this???? The wings 2 Red and 1 white. The red wings are the same, and the white is different
What is different in the wings? the cord? shape? IMO I would leave the saddle a bit oversize and have the users pot it in with some microballons for a perfect fit. I have yet to find a Viper wing that is perfectly straight. Some fly OK with just a touch of trim... but I have gotten that several that were so bad that I had to crack the trailing edge and reset. Looking forward to seeing the fuse as I believe it would not only be good for 424, but also as a quick and inexpensive way to have a decent 428 racer for local racing. Dan

When are the kits going to be available, from where and how much? I would like to build one so I can take it to our local club meetings and local racing events. If I can get enough people interested, with a plane, within driving distance - I will CD a contest at PGRC in Bowie MD next season. I assume two batteries would be needed at a minimum to allow charging to occcur between heats without pushing them too much.... I assume, I could be wrong, that running flat out everything will get a bit warm. Dan Myer

I like checkers myself, big ones,.... preferably on the outer portion of the wing where you can really see it. I never bother with the bottom. If you are looking at the bottom... you are doing something wrong! [:)] This is a picture of my son's viper. It took a whole 30 minutes to cutout the patterns and apply it... so there is no need to spend a lot of time or material for an effective visual experience. Dan

I quess I am old fashioned... I am still using the 5 cell 370MA Nicads... they never have failed me. I fly 5-6 rounds plus a test flight and flyoffs and dump them when I get home. They consistently still have about 200 MA of power left. Good enough for me... they cost about $12-14 from radicalrc.

Still won't give up my engine... and at any 424 event that I am the CD... I will explicity state in the sanction/advertisement the $25 engine inspection rule is in effect instead of any engine claim rule that may pass. I can do that. So can anyone else. If you want to do the $100 claim rule... go ahead and advertise it in your events. As an example of local variances, we don't allowing shimming and in additon we supply the props (unless someone forgets to bring them!). dan
We are getting our TT40 pro's for $72. If someone wants my engine for $100 I'm cool. It won't cost me $28 to break in the next one. My $.02
My time is worth far more to me than $10-20 (I don't know where you can get a TT40pro shipped to you for $72). I simply do not have the time to break in any more engines than absolutely neccesary. I only have one (I do this for fun). So if that passes... I will will not pass over my engine and I will be totally cool with being disqualified... be glad to give the fella any $5 trophy I may have that day and shake his hand! Be more than glad to tear it down as the rules state now.... but as we know... it is not the engine where the real speed and good times come from... especially in 424. While the intent is good... I think it is misguided. dan

RE: rule proposals
On the other hand a $100 claim doesn't pay for the time and effort of just properly breaking in a new engine so it is competitive. So some slob that doesn't want to take the time and bring his motor in to run well can steal another guys motor and doesn't even have to identify himself to the guy he is claiming his motor. Sad!
IMHO.... if someone wants my engine and it is a good one.... I simply will not give it up for a $100.... that won't even pay for the breakin fuel. They can keep the $5 trophy and disqualify me... don't care one bit. I know what the score is(was) and I am only flying this class for fun. Just my opinion. Now if someone wants help breaking their engine in and getting it up to speed... all you have to do is ask. dan
As far as the engine goes, now would be a good time for a Spec engine to be ruled in. Since Dubby is the only engine builder still standing, let him decide what that is. For anyone else entering the market, they have to make their engine so that all parts are interchangeable with the Spec design. It would also be important to freeze the spec for a period of 5 years, with the renewal of the concept at every rule cycle. Thus avoiding another Nelson surprise. RE: rule proposals
Back before the Nelson was introduced when I first started racing... we used to run OPS, SuperTiger, COMO, PICO with all sorts of tuned pipes and reworked wooden props. They made a lot of noise... but were about the same speed as as the ROSSI 40 (120ish?) with a REVUP wooden prop(stock) which became the dominant engine before the Nelson. I would think that the TTPRO's with a tuned pipe would be a little bit faster because of the better APC props that are available. Has anyone considered going back to a stock ROSSI or something similar with the mini-pipe and any APC prop you want? I bet that would bump the speeds up a bit more than a TTPro and be a much higher quality engine. I could be totally wrong though! Here are some ROSSI engines that seem to be available. http://shop.vendio.com/RossiEnginesUSA/category/1/

RE: rule proposals
I read in a thread on the NMPRA site that there still "Thousands" of SS Nelsons around. SO this is what I propose, change the rules to allow only Short Stroke style engines. That would make all the "Old" Nelsons able to run up front again, Dubb would be able to take a break from R&D on the LS. Profi would at least have a chance in the market, they were out what, 2 months before the Nelson LS came out and made them into paper weights.
Problem is.... how many old SS Nelsons have got good undamaged cases? Who do you think is going to snatch most of the good ones up real quick to convert to LS 422 Nelsons? A couple thousand cases won't go too far especially when attrition is considered, conversion to 422 LS and some simply are not being straight enough to repair and be competitive. I also don't mind slowing 428 down a bit, but 424 speeds make no sense when that is already covered. Hope the guys working on this have their best thinkin hats on... off the the skunk werks now youens!

Rule 2 is kinda curious... while the availablity of new nelsons without a doubt has permanently altered 428, the new proposal for 428 with stock $100 .47 engine ain't gonna get too many current 428 peoples juice up IMO. How much difference in speed is there between a quickie with a .40 TTpro and a .46 TTpro? 5-10 MPH? Does not seem like enough speed gap between 424 and 428.... of course... we are caught between a rock and a hard place! I have heard talk of sticking Nelson guts into a TTPro case for a reasonable amount. Anyone hear that yet? dan

RE: Nelson allowed in Q-500
The problem is attrition... at what point does it become impossible to obtain a good quality used Nelson Case to rebuild? It's a dead end no matter how you look at it and certainly from the viewpoint of a propective competitor, very unappealing prospect.

RE: Scat Cat Wing
Did the prop eat the whole wing or just a nibble or two? Prop damaged wings are usually very easy to repair. IMO I would not change the airfoil on the scat cat. .. the airfoils you mention would require modifying the wing saddle as well as an adjustment in wing incidence which for a scat cat - probably is not really worth the trouble. If you want a faster entry level quickie... just get a Viper 500... it is generally faster than a scat cat and flies very well. dan

RE:
The real key to building a lightweight glassed wing is controlling the weight of the balsa sheeting and the amount of glue used to attach the skins and reinforcing carbon/glass. The key item used to control the weight of everything going in, including glue and wood weights, is a good quality gram scale. I am not familiar with the material you are contemplating laminating/bagging onto the sheeted wing, however, I am familar with building high quality balsa sheeted/glassed/painted quickie 500 wings that weight 1 pound with servo. Just takes a little patience and attention to details. Good luck. Dan

RE: Q500 entry-level Q's
Vipers are the way to go with the airplane - a few simple mods and they are reliable and fly very well. As for the motor - I would recommend that it is inexpensive, available to all, be reliable and use a single prop. Most here in the states use the Thunder Power Pro-40 with an APC 9x6 though a few groups do use TT46's or OS46. Some of the engines on your list are no longer available new - I would stay away from anything not available new to everyone. In the air vipers with a TT Pro-40 are all remarkably similar in speed regargless of what they may tack on the ground which places a premium on pilot skill and practice as it should be. Best of luck! dan

RE: No Nelson
ORIGINAL: fizzwater2 The cost is much better - you can have lots of fun, close races, with an 85 dollar motor. That is one of the reasons why we get so much better turnout.
I CD'd a race last weekend and we advertised 424 and 428... but we did not have enough 428 racers to put on a race. Nelson/No-Nelson or any other uber fast motor dosn't matter a bit at the local level. The few people who show up with their $500 composite and the latest gummy cranked engine simply don't want to put it at risk for nothing - and there is the whole problem with local 428 racing. The 424 racing however with inexpensive Vipers, Predators and even a few home growns was extremely competitive and a lot of fun. I setup a Viper with a old Nelson to race 428 - really just to show we really don't have to spend that much to have fun - but no-one really wanted to race - we did however have some scintilllating 428 test flying after handing out the 424 trophies! dan
