RE: Choosing a 50cc Extra 300
There are a number of excellent 50CC extra's - take your pick - my son has a Pilot 260 with a DLE 55 and it flies incredible and after three years of hard flying - it is still in great condition with zero build or maintenance issues. IMHO - even if you only want to sport fly... these great 3D planes are a joy to fly - you can set the rates to regular sport fly levels of throw and have a terrific every day flier that fly like a trainer because the wing loadings are so low. RE: J3 Cub help needed
Real shame there are no local J3's to look at... It is amazing to crawl around an actual working one... they all look so.... used!!! There are several near me at local airports that can be rented... one day I intend to spend a few hours in one with an instructor. Good luck with your Cub. I got all my pinking tape from Stits-Lite - they have a number of types of tapes in several common widths for 1/4 and 1/3 scale.

RE: DLE plug question
Oh my god..... I had no idea there was such a single point of failure in our new 30% Extra with a DLE55. Seeing how it spends 75% of it's time in some type of gravity defying manuever 20 feet or less off the ground... that is a disaster in waiting. I am about to start the 5th gallon of gas flying it so I guess by the established timetable described it is about due to fail. I have been flying stuff since I was 10 in the sixties - but I am new to large gas models. I am not flying again until I get a replacement NGK - it is a chance I am not willing to take over a mere $6 for an $1,800 worth of plane! Heck... I will even replace the plug in my 12 year old Cub with a G23! I am so bad - I have never even cleaned or gaped it! Thanks for the good advice! Dan
ORIGINAL: STUKA BARRY
ORIGINAL: CGAV8R I just use a 1 gallon empty glow fuel bottle with the stock cap. Aaron D
This is a very cheap way to go as there are always empty glow fuel jugs in the trash cans at the flying field. The only problem is ''ofcourse'' our Gubberment. You can get a hefty fine for dispensing gasoline into an unapproved container and the service station you used could be fined too. It would probably never happen, but all it takes is a bored patron with a cell phone with a camera and your busted. Be careful.
Just use a government approved 1 - 2 gallon can to obtain the gas from station - add mix first. Then simply pour the mixed gas into your hobby can of any type... No problem with the GOV. If find this is easier and I always have mixed gas available.

RE: O.S. 160 Gemini problem
When you get both sides running - you will know!!!! Night and day difference. I was not sure the first time myself but when both sides fired off I knew I had struck gold for this free engine. I was real happy with the tuned 8,100 RPM with a 17x8 APC - on 15% 4-cycle fuel.... had a surprising amount of pull. I am going to try a Xoar or Vess 18x6 Beechwood Sport prop on it next as I beleive that will be a lot better than the current APC prop that came with the engine. Dan

O.S. 160 Gemini problem
I recently got an old O.S. Gemini 160 twin for free... the one with an air bleed carb. I just started it and I could not get any power out of it. I am pretty sure I had both cylinders working - but it would only put out 5,900 RPM with an APC 17x8 prop. Transisition was awful. No amount of needle twisting made it any better. Is this one worn out, or could out of adjustment valves cause it to be this much off in power? Any ti[s would be appreciated as I am not a 4-cycle guy (yet). dan

Fun Fixing a Viper Wing
Setting up a new Viper that will use a Nelson for my Kid that wants to try the faster stuff.... I think I got the wing they made after one heck of a lot of rice wine on a monday! Test flights revealed a ton of aileron trim needed.... took it home and put the incidence meter on it and saw what I expected... one wing was perfect while the other had a bad rash of wash in. Broke the trailing edge from the aileron on out... reset and covered the wound on bottom of wing. Next test flight revealed the aileron trim was no longer needed at all... perfect. However... now that I dared to try and fly on the course... it climbed like a homesick angel in the turn... tried a couple of quarters on the offending wing... no change at all. Returned home and checked the lateral balance.... wow... the heavy wing was not just heavy... it was made of IRON! To get it to static balance took 36 grams of tip weight! I usually use #6 or #8 finishing nails for fine balance... I went straight to the 12D coated sinkers which I sunk 8 1/2 into the light wing tip! I think the next flight will be just about right! The Vipers, for the price, fly AOK when you take the time to fix them and set them up just right... but some sure do need more work than others! Dan

It will hurt your hand pushing the cap on all the way.
You are right about this being a novices #1 mistake... I recently got a DLE55, my first big gas engine, and when I first started it in my yard.... it started easily, however. the cap fell off! After the second time I assumed I was doing something wrong... and I pushed the cap on with much more force than before... and pop... it snapped all the way on where it has remained ever since! I am really impressed with the power this engine has (Vess 22B)... on my third gallon and this thing starts easier than any engine I have ever owned! After the choke and pop... one flip every time... thirty seconds of warm up and it is ready to do anything... and I mean anything... my 3D flying son can think up! Good luck getting that plug worked out. DAn

RE: Strange Glitch with radio, receiver or servo?
My money is on the HS225 being bad... have seen plenty fail - tie a loop in the lead to mark it as flawed and use it for parts (case, gears). The fact only one servo was failing leads me to believe the receiver or transmitter are not the problem.

RE: Pilot 30% Extra 260
My son and I put the Extra through a good workout last weekend - about 45 minutes flight time much of it 3D (my son). I dumped the batteries and found I used 1335 MA of the flight packs (4300 MA) and 295 of the Ignition pack (1650 MA). I assume these are reasonable power usage levels considering the type plane, servos (HS7954SH) and flight mode, however, let me know if your opinion differs as I am trying to monitor useage and gauge safe flying times - this is the first plane like this for me and I have no prior experience. P.S. - switched to a VESS 22B prop - my kid from a 5 foot off the runway torque roll punched it and rocketed straight up out of sight!! That ism the kind of power I had in mind!![:D] Dan

RE: Pilot 30% Extra 260
We finally finished the Pilot Extra 260... used Hitec HS-7954SH servos everywhere but the choke (old/new JR 517 analog) and throttle where I used a Hitec HS-7965MG, 1650 NIMH MA battery on the ignition and dual 6V 2150 MA NIMH to feed the receiver and servos and a Smartfly remote shutoff. The DLE 55 started easily and ran perfect with only a slight richening of the high needle. The shakedown flights went very well - the first flight it flew great with just a couple clicks of up trim needed to fly straight and level hands off. Spent most of the time just going fairly easy myself making sure everything was working correctly and still tight after each flight - but that plane sure does track well and have the power to climb! The kid had it doing rolling circles and hovering/torque rolling by the second flight (at altitude due to the new engine/plane). I am very impressed at how well it flew right offf the table and cannot wait until next weekend to get some more flight time and start adding the flight mixes/adjusting the balance etc.

Out of curiosity - would a Pitts muffler like a J-Tec wrap around cause a significant loss of performance over the stock side canister?
