RE: Vailly Aviation Hawker Hurricane Build Thread
I've been puttering on the wing mounting, fillets, etc.. I've used some balsa and ply "mini - ribs" to help keep the ply wing fillet down, and I intend to use them to guide the putty knife when I make the fillet. I've also built up the front fillet with balsa so I won't be using so much epoxy or auto body filler when that time comes. The last shot is just for my inspiration so I will remember that the end is in sight. The rear wing fillets will be covered with fiberglass and epoxy, so I will make a joint between the solartex and the fiberglass with masking tape. I'm hoping to practice on the fillets so I'll get it right on the fuse.

RE: Vailly Aviation Hawker Hurricane Build Thread
I've been trying to figure out what's wrong with the wing root and I've finally figured out that it's the curvature. I made a new root form for the rear wing fairing and it turns out to be quite close to the BT plan, although the designers mount the wing and fairing in different ways. Below is the Vailly wing root, the BT root for comparison, and the first glue going down on the saddle.

RE: Vailly Aviation Hawker Hurricane Build Thread
Still avoiding the wing fairings by working on the cowl. I cut the openings for the exhausts, and then cut a cowl ring out to fit inside the cowl. BIG MISTAKE! I should have cut a slit along the centerline of the exhaust stubs and then fitted the cowl ring. The cowl is just smaller than the firewall so when I fitted in the cowl ring the cowl spread apart. The cowl now fits the fuse perfectly but the expansion has widened the slots I made for the exhausts. After the epoxy dries I'll be fitting in some of the cowl I cut out in order to make the exhaust openings fit the stacks. Definitely will not make wthat mistake again! The cowl is guided onto the firewall by a 1/4" dowel peg on top and bottom. I haven't decided how many bolts to use but it looks like cowl removal/attachment will be through the spinner opening and the air intake.

Brad, I know a lot of folks swear by the Turnigy NanoTech batteries. I've had one nanotech and six of the regular Turnigy batteries that I use in my electric heli (TREX 500). The only battery to go bad was the nanotech. Just a thought. Sam

Your Hurricane is beautiful. I'm really glad to see it's still flying and that you've got the kinks ironed out. Thanks especially for the CG note. I'll use that as my starting CG when I get to that point. Someday after I retire I'll make a point of going to some of those bigger fly-ins. Your Spitfire is awesome too. Sam

RE: Vailly Aviation Hawker Hurricane Build Thread
Life has been busy with work, kids in school, kid getting ready to ship to USMC bootcamp in a few months, and home repair projects. I decided to glass the flap beds because I'll probably install them permanently before fully sheeting the wing, to make sure that the linkages are all as they should be. In between moving the ladder to the next part of the house I took advantage of our warm weather to lay out some .56oz cloth and epoxy.

Baby wipes for heavy residue. Glass Plus with a microfiber cloth for everything else. You can buy a large container of the MF cloths at Costco for a reasonable price.

RE: Is there a radio that does not lose signal?
About your two crashes....Did you re-use any of the electronics from the first crashed plane in the second? I lost several planes due to a faulty servo. It only caused interference when there was a load against the flight surface, so that if you did a ground check all was fine but in the air eventually that control surface would be used or a maneuver would load it, and bam, no control. That being said, I've flown Futaba since about 1990, both 72 and 2.4, and never had a radio related crash. I am now using the 8FGS with A123 battery packs on the rx, with a diode in the line so it's running just over 6 volts. I have found some glitch issues on ground testing but it's always been either gas ignition too close, a faulty extension, or antenna/rx placement. Good luck, I know how frustrating this stuff can be. RE: Vailly Aviation Hawker Hurricane Build Thread
Thanks for the kind words Casey and Stan. Stan, that is exactly what I am thinking of doing. I was thinking of getting an ARF warbird when it occured to me that it would be better for me to finish up one of the Hurricanes to flying status, with nothing except the retracts and exhaust stacks for scale details. If I can get used to it then I'll finish the other one and scale them out at my leisure. I'll still try to make the mods to the flaps so that they are more scale in size, but I'll follow your lead on actuation with four servos. I'll get started soon and post some photos. Sorry to hear about your Hurricane. Your build is a great inspiration! Sam

RE: Vailly Aviation Hawker Hurricane Build Thread
I can't believe it's been four months since I did anything on this. I recently lost my Corsair on it's maiden landing, so now it's back to work on the Hurricanes. I've decided to use a matchbox type device to work four flap servos in the wings. This is mainly done for simplicity's sake. I think I've dawdled enough and want to make some faster progress. Losing the Corsair made me realize that I want to get one of the Hurris into the air, in the primer, without a bunch of time consuming scale details. Once I establish that it will fly, then I'll get the other one up to speed and detail at my leisure. So hopefully you (and I ) will see some more progress soon. sam

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
I guess I should say that I let my son maiden the plane. He is a good pilot but in retrospect there is a difference between being good and having enough experience to handle a plane like this. He is used to flying smaller planes and 30cc aerobats, and he did not know that he should have let it land, even if it meant rolling into the weeds at the end of the runway, or if going around, kept the wings level and gradually added power until stable flying speed was reached. I'm not saying I wouldn't have made the same mistake if I had been on the sticks, but we'll never know. It may or may not have been a tip stall. It was basically on the ground when he decided to go around again. It either tip stalled or the engine torque rolled the plane to the left when he added full throttle - I'm not sure. It had about a ten minute flight prior to this and flew great. I want to thank all of you for your kind words and wishes, as well as the incredible amount of information and advice I've received over the years from this forum and especially this thread. I have to say that the tricks I've learned on this thread will definitely be used again, but right now I don't have the desire to spend any more of our breif NW flying season in the workshop. I've had a couple inquiries on the tailwheel and exhaust and I'll think about it for a few more days before I decide. I have the parts to make some more tailwheels and have had some inquiries on making some more of those too, but to be frank I'm all out of Corsair juice right now. I was hoping to bring the plane to some of the warbird fly-ins but now I'll just work those days instead of taking them off. If there is any positive to this I can say that all the mods you guys recommended worked like a dream. The only thing I would do differently is to try to make it even lighter, but I'm not sure that's possible without substituting a lot of wood and substantially changing the design. Sam

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Just a quick update on my Corsair. We maidened it today and other than a sluggish lift off it flew fine. It had the Corsair waggle. We lost the Corsair on one of the landing attempts - the classic tip stall when banking for another go around without having gained enough flying speed..... At any rate, I've lost interest in this bird and will be parting out my Zenoah G-62/Keleo Exhaust setup, and maybe the retracts too. This has been a fun and informative project but after all these years its time to move on. Good luck to all of you with your builds and flights. Sam

RE: Best Warbird Batteries?
ORIGINAL: Warbird Man It looks like were limited to just 1100 and 2300 mAh packs. What are you all using? Is a 1100 enough for a 1/5th scale plane for lets say 3 -15 min. flights or does everyone just use the 2300s?
I run thte 1100 on the ignition and 2300 on the Rx, with 50cc aerobats and warbrids. I would "guess" that you would have enough for 3-15 min flights but the recharge time is so fast, I usually recharge after two flights. By the time I've had a rest or a cup of coffee the pack is recharged. These are so much different that NiCd you have to really change your thinking about charging the night before, etc... sam

RE: Best Warbird Batteries?
I switched all my non-electric planes to A123's last year when I started having trouble finding NiCds. I have one FMA Labs PL-8 and 2 of the Cellpro 4 chargers. I use the Cellpro 4 chargers to charge the A123's. Even at 1C they take less than 15 min to charge. LIke others have said, no appreciable loss of charge while storing and all the power you could need on demand. I balance charge through the taps and have 6" balance tap extension so I can charge in the plane. I have modified my switches so that they are 20ga wire from the battery to the switch. Then 20 ga to the rx with a diode inline to drop the voltage to 6volts. I also have pig-tailed a LED off the RX power lead so when I turn on the switch I have an idicator that I can see easily. I have bought my A123's from EP Buddy and they have been flawless, and very affordable. Go For It! Sam

RE: LED power on indicator for A123 Rx system
I thought I'd post a final pic of what I've ended up with. I decided that adding an extra set of wires to the swtich was making things pretty crowded in the switch box, and I wanted to upgrade the wires to 20 gauge since I will be putting the A123 batteries up front and the switch behind the cockpit. I had also been using a diode which was attached inline like an extension, and I believe that every plug is a potential failure point. And since my A123 packs come with a heavy wire lead, I have been putting EC-3 connectors on them. So my final result is 20 gauge lead to the battery with a EC3 connector. Then output wire is 20 gauge, with a 22 gauge pig tail leading to the LED indicator. Past this is an inline diode to bring the voltage down to 6 volts, terminating in the Rx plug. I can move the pig tail point to fit the install. Again, thanks for the great help here. Sam

Beautiful and inspiring work on that plane. I'd love to see a bit more detail on your techniques, from reworking the control surfaces, your great surface detailing, how you made your strut covers, and painting. I know this question was asked once before, but I did not find an answer: What kind of silver paint finish did you use? Thanks and congratulations, Sam

RE: LED power on indicator for A123 Rx system
Thanks Rich but I have so many of the older style switches I don't want to buy new ones. The plugs never seem to fit quite right so I end up putting my own connectors on anyway. Pete, thank you so much for the information. A quick trip to Radio Shack, $8, and I have enough to do six switches. I've added some pix to show how I did it. The only real mod on the switch was to use a round file to enlarge the exit hole for the end that has the led indicator on it. Thanks again! Sam

LED power on indicator for A123 Rx system
I've converted my planes to A123 batteries. I'm looking for a way to use a LED as a power on indicator in situations where my RX is buried in the plane. I'm hoping to be able to just drill a hole and mount a LED next to my Rx switch, so it will come on when the power to the Rx is on. I've checked at Radio Shack but they do not have any LED's that use 6.6 volts. Can anybody point me in the right direction as to what LED i need to get, and any pros and cons about doing this? I am "assuming" that a LED will not draw a noticeable amount of power. Thanks in advance, Sam

Horizon Hobby Service is WOW!
My younger son bought a Horizon Hobby Hawker Hurricane (25e) at the NW Hobby Expo, from a shop that was reducing it's inventory prior to moving. We paid cash and did not get a receipt. When we were installing the radio the flap servos all of a sudden went to full throw and I could smell that they were burning up. The gears were stripped. I emailed Horizon Hobby and they replied that all I had to do was send them a copy of the receipt and they would take care of it. I emailed back that I had no receipt. I then ordered two more servos (and two gear sets hoping I could repair the servos). I got an email today from Horizon and they said that they wanted to help me, and that they were sending me two new servos, and there was no need for me to send the defective ones back! I could hardly believe it! We're quick to sound off our displeasure so I wanted to be sure to be as quick to tell of a really positive experience. Sam

RE: Vailly Aviation Hawker Hurricane Build Thread
I finally got the flap "bed" done on one side of one wing, and have been able to test fit a set of flaps with the U-Joint. It is still not a sure thing, but as soon as I figure out how to temporarily fix it in place so I can try moving the flaps as one unit, I'll post theh results. The U-Joint is probably a bit larger than scale but I think it will be okay when it's painted. sam

RE: Vailly Aviation Hawker Hurricane Build Thread
A slight detour as my new receiver controllled switches have arrived. I bought them from HobbyKing to operate my landing lights. I intend to slave the channel they are on to my landing geare switch. On my radio almost all the switches are three position, so I think I'll have the lights come on at the lowests position, so I can turn them off but still have the gear down. Below pix show the switch in the package, the switch out (you can see how small it is by comparing the servo plug) and the other pic shows my setup, using A123 batteries with two power taps. One tap goes to the lights and one goes to the Rx via a diode.

RE: when/how did you know you wanted children or not?
Before you and your girlfriend decide to have kids you should be on the same page with regards to faith, money, kids, and inlaws. Before we were married, my wife told me that if I was not interested in having kids then move along. If you don't have a solid marriage don't have kids. It's not fair to the kids or each other. Having kids really forced me to become less selfish - having to put others first is part of being mature. And one more thing, when you elect to have children, be advised that you are truly rolling the dice. There are life threatening complications that can arise, there can be developmental issues, and you actually care what kind of a world your children are going to inherit. That being said, I don't think there is any greater joy. And, if you do have kids someday, you'll cease being one of those self-absorbed dinks (Dual Income No Kids) who thinks to themselves "There must be more to life than work and material goods" and starts exploring with existentialism. And while there are lots of single moms out there I don't believe for a minute that they all just up and dumped their husbands after getting pregnant. Plenty of husbands bail after they have kids because they can't make the adjustment or did not think it through. And this is a good topic to bring up in the Clubhouse, as many others have said. I have found RC flying fields and events to be very "family friendly" and my kids enjoy the interaction with other adults. I've found many a kindred spirit at the field, and strangers have shown us all great kindness the kind of example I want my kids to see. My two cents. Sam

Thanks Casey. I think that each outboard section will have four hinges, and the inboard sections will have three hinges. Here are all the sections laid out. The second set of flaps went tons faster than the first.

RE: Vailly Aviation Hawker Hurricane Build Thread
First flap hinge made. I had some left-over fiberglass from my Corsair gear doors made by Gary M, and I sandwiched some 1/8" aircraft ply between them with epoxy. Sort of a triple laminate. Then I cut one with my scroll saw, adjusted my drill jig, and got a decent hole going. Then I rounded the end. The other end will be glued into the trailing edge blocks. I'll drill some 1/16 holes in the laminate to allow the epoxy to get some hold on it. Now only 27 more to go....at least the first set of flaps is pretty much done! Edit: After making a batch, now I'm re-thinking the thickness of the hinge. I may cut a set of G10 hinges just to compare. A single G10 would be a lot easier to install in the new trailing edge....

RE: Vailly Aviation Hawker Hurricane Build Thread
It's amazing how some things seem to become self explanatory once you put them together. I've been looking at photos of the Hurricane flaps for years trying to see what the overlap between the inner and outer flaps was all about, trying to figure out angles and such. I test fit the flaps to the wing and found that when the flaps are retracted they do not overlap, but then they are depoyed, they do overlap. Sort of like the opposite of the Corsair, which needs an overlap piece between the sections when deployed but they do not overlap when stowed. I know the Hurricane has a spring fitted section which I think covers the gap when the flaps are stowed but I'm not sure I'll be able to work that out or not. I think for now I'll get the flaps made and fitted to the wings and then see.

I think I'll be able to drive all the flaps from one servo, actuating the arrowshaft that connects both inner flaps. I'm looking for ideas how to make a control horn that will do the job - maybe G10 sandwhiched between some ply supports on the middle of the rod?

I do like to eat ribs with BBQ too! But since I dont' have any right now I'll have to make do with riblets on ply. Here is a pic of the inner flap assembly test fit to the outer flap assembly using the u-joints, which I've been afraid were going to be to big. This is not finished, but sort of like when you just HAVE to see your plane on it's wheels the first time, or test the retracts.... you know what I mean. I think this will work. I have not finalized what the leading edge will be, or if I'll just carefully sand the riblets and have the arrowshaft be the LE. I need to work on my hinging later today, time allowing. Sam

I know the Spitfire's flaps were either full up or down, not sure about the Hurricane.
