RE: MODEL AIRPLANES STORAGE WARS AUCTION FULTON NEW YORK
I wouldn't think someone would pay monthly storage charges unless there was quite a bit of valuable items inside. Might be a fantastic find.

RE: CL 1949 Puddle Jumper with AH Drone diesel
beautiful little model. One time I asked Arne which one of his smaller engines he would like to see on a model and he said the Drone. Arne said it had a lot of power.

RE: New 09 Diesel
I do have the Std and RC versions of the Johnson Bulldog. I wanted a Sesqui for a long time but the closest I got was seeing one that Stu Richmond had when he lived near me in Apopka, FL. The Sesqui was gorgeous but I never did understand why the Intake was right in the exhast port blast.

RE: New 09 Diesel
AMA Class "A" never favored the .09 engine displacement. For maximum power such as control line speed the .19 was top dog, first the McCoy redheads and then the K&B greenhead blew everyone away. When the USA joined the .15 FAI competitions the K&B greenhead went right to the top of the list. Bill Atwood saw the advantage of using an .051 engine in a half-A FF model he made his .049 and .051 engines which Holland Hornet copied and they also went the .049 - .051 route. Bill Atwood developed the TD engines for Cox so they offered both the .049 and .051 sizes too. While the K&B Greenhead .15 and .19 engines were proven winners the Greenhead .09 actually put out more power per displacement than either of it's larger brothers but the .09 had no place to go. K&B announced their Greenhead .09 around 1954 and I ordered one from my local dealer but as far as I know they never made them until around 1957. When they did come out they were a real winner. Early .09 greenheads had a long, open exhaust port and would sometimes become warped. K&B quickly modified the design by adding a web in the center of the exhaust port to strengthen it.

RE: New 09 Diesel
Nice looking engine. I never could understand why an .09 or 1.5cc class never got off the ground in the USA. This size engine is still my favorite since getting an OK Cub .099 and McCoy .098 in 1951. Some half-A models came out heavy and an .09 makes life a lot easier.

RE: Variable RC Diesel head for Cox .049
Thanks for the info Bob. It seems like a good idea now, with all the light-weight radio gear on the market. What kind of RPM drop can I expect when the compression is backed off? I know it doesn't take much power drop to get most 1/2A's to lose altitude.

Variable RC Diesel head for Cox .049
I have this Davis Diesel conversion head for Cox .049 & .051 engines that has a variable R/C arm. There is an "O" ring on the screw and when it gets oily, it slips. I've never seen another one so it may be a short run item. Just wondering if this thing worked or am I using it wrong. Hope Bob Davis will check in on this one and give some info.

RE: McCoy diesels
William, I agree, it's always a good thing when you don't scratch a cylinder muff. Sounds like you come up with whatever you need. I like to put "Stuck" engines on a 60 watt light bulb for about 15 minutes to loosen up the gook and then you can give them a shot of Marvel oil to keep them free. Heat will sometimes loosen a muff too.

RE: Cox .09 Diesel Conversion Heads
Gazimoto mentioned Stan Pilgrim set an Australian Midge record with a Rossi .09 diesel. Stan told me he used a Hungarian Alag X4 Hybrid diesel engine and I even made him a custom box for it. He never told me the details of the engine but I think it used an Alag case and internals from something else, maybe a Rossi...... Here is a picture of a stock Alag X4 that I used to get size for Stan's engine. I also had pictures of his model on the back of the box with dates and details. The art work is still in my old computer but the monitor doesn't come on so I can't get to it right now.

Hi Martin, I heard the Cox Medallion crank was weak but never heard any complaints about the TD. Wonder if you could heat and harden the TD crank. Probably a waste of time, just get a PAW diesel and enjoy it.

Cox .09 Diesel Conversion Heads
For years I was under the impression that Davis Diesel never made a conversion head for Cox engines larger than the .049/.051. A few years ago I picked up a Davis Diesel head for Cox .09's and also a blue MECOA diesel conversion head. The story I got with the DD head was that the .09 would run very hot and that's why production was stopped. I understand these heads are quite rare. Does anyone use one of these heads or know the history? The muffler on the Medallion .09 was made by Tatone.

RE: Sterling Viper
My other thought for the Viper was one of my McCoy .049 diesels. The reason I originally suggested a McCoy .098 or Cub .099 was that later .049 engines had almost as much power as these early .09's but the .09 engines are more user-friendly and don't have to scream their guts out to fly a small UC model. My engine collection is heavily weighted towards .09 engines because I found out at an early age that half-A models with an .09 in the nose fly much better for me and I don't have to back up to keep the lines tight in light winds. For me, an older .049 engine in a UC model may be nostalgic but an .09 engine can turn that same model into a very satisfactory flying session. I did fly a Sterling Ringmaster Jr with a McCoy .09 Diesel and later with a K&B greenhead .09. It was an OK flier but more of a sport model than stunt. As for the Flight Streak Jr. I agree it is a superb flier and I flew them back in the sixties with K&B Greenhead .19, Fox .19 and Testors/McCoy .19 engines. The K&B was my favorite and I still have a new one in case I run across another F/S Jr kit. I know Brodak has a repro kit so that's probably what I'll get.

John, What engine are you running in that 54" Quaker? I started one a few years ago and need to finish it. I was thinking PAW, AM, MVVS or Webra R/C 1.5cc diesel but need to run them and see which one I like best.

RE: Need a McCoy .o49 Contra-Piston
The idea of making a brass contra-piston is also my thought. Brass would provide excellent heat. If not try steel. Seems to me you could chuck a brass rod in a drill, use a file to cut a notch for the O-ring and then cut the piston to vertical size with a hacksaw while the drill is running. The O-Ring would make up for any sloppiness in your contra-piston. Anyone know the diameter of a McCoy .049 contra-piston?

RE: cleaned an engine in prestone and it blackened ... what to do ?
That Dawn Power Disolver is great stuff but make sure you rinse it off with water as it will keep on working and can mess up aluminum engine cases if not stopped with water when clean. It's almost as good as that engine cleaner Davis Diesel used to sell. Wish I could get some more of that stuff.

RE: McCoy diesels
George, now don't get excited when you see the McCoy .098 in this shot. It has great compression but someone filed off the tank screw boss so I decided to make a McCoy "Redhead" .098.

RE: McCoy diesels
I need to clear up some misunderstandings on McCoy .09 diesel tanks. The proper tank is diecast with a ridge on the end next to the backplate. The McCoy diesel shown in an above post has an OK Cub red anodised spun aluminum tank. You will also find them with incorrectly fitted with McCoy .098 glo engine tanks but they are straight, with no ridge. I have also seen them with Wen-Mac .049 tanks.

RE: McCoy diesels
Dan Vincent here. The McCoy tank screws were a bit wider than the Wasp, Atwood and Spitfire tanks but the OK Cub .049X and Holland Hornet were a bit wider. I don't know off hand if they will fit into the backplate hole of the McCoy or not. I do know a McCoy Baby-Mac .049 tank will fit but the Baby-Macs are pretty scarce.

RE: Gilbert .11 - equivalent engine?
The Gilbert .11 was designed by Fox and is similar to the old Fox Rocket .09. Glo heads from the Fox Rocket .09, Fox .10 and Hustler .10 will fit the Gilbert .11. The thread is also the same as a Cox .15 glo-head but I'm not sure of the compression ratio. Too bad they don't make a Cox .15 diesel conversion head so we could convert the Fox, Hustler & Gilbert engines.
