RE: The new electric YAK 54 from Greatplanes!
So did you go with the 22S like what bzyguy is using, or the 28S? I'm planning on the 22S myself.
ORIGINAL: psheffield GP 950 Kv with a 10X7 APC slo fly prop works the best for that GP motor. Not enough RPM's for an E prop with the 950 KV. I took my GP rimfire out and put in a Hacker and it's twice the plane now. The elevator fix is a must in my opinion. Put power in it or sit on the porch with the poodles!
RE: The new electric YAK 54 from Greatplanes!
I think they recommended the 950 for a reason. You stated in a previous thread that the Yak WOULD actually hover and pull out with the 950, albeit slowly....with the structural failures that we've been seeing (haven't most of these been with hotter motors?), we know that the plane can't handle much in the way of high-stress violent manuevers, and they know this too. So, GP probably recommends the 950 since it's performance would be sufficient for a lot of pilots, while not loading the airframe nearly as much (as say a 1250) and still giving some 3D performance. Just a thought.
ORIGINAL: bzyguy01 I just think that GP should have reccomended a 1250 Kv motor instead or at least posted true specs so that buyers could better judge what to use for a power source at the spec fly weight. The specs don't tell you what voltage and prop loading that their specs were acheived at.
Good deal, thanks again! Btw, you mentioned that the Hacker Yak liked the APC 'E' prop best...was this an 11x7 as well? Dave

RE: The new electric YAK 54 from Greatplanes!
bzyguy, Thanks a bunch for all the research and test results! It sure sounds like the Hacker is the way to go on this, so I suppose I'll go ahead and snag one. I'm a bit curious how the Rimfire would perform using the recommended 1250mAh/3s Lipo (lighter in weight). Your final weights are right on the money however, so I'd bet the Rimfire still wouldn't be on the same level as the Hacker even with the lighter battery. I'm also definitely going to reinforce the horizontal stab with CF. I'm a bit concerned with the vertical stab in my kit too, as it doesn't look very strong at all....but then you haven't had any problems out of the vertical stabs on any of your Yaks yet though, have you? Or the wings? After being used to nitro planes this electric stuff seems so fragile in comparison, I'll just have to get past my paranoia. Hopefully I can get some other things done and be able to concentrate on this during the Christmas week. Regards, Dave

RE: The new electric YAK 54 from Greatplanes!
I'm new and still quite confused on motor ratings....so what am I missing here? I keep hearing people say that the performance is less than ideal with the recommended Rimfire 35-30-950 outrunner, and that the Yak performs much better with something like the Hacker A30-22s or E-Flite Park 480. Believe me, I'm not doubting what you guys are saying, but I'm very confused by the specs, and the results. I would LOVE to get a handle on all this. Maybe there's a good book out there somewhere? On paper: -The Rimfire 35-30-950kV is rated at 296W/20A constant -The Hacker A30-22S is rated at 290W/16A constant (and is rated for a smaller diameter/pitch propeller) -The Park 480 (910kV) is rated for 250W/20A constant, and the (1020kV) is rated for 275W/22A costant Of these specs, it appears to me that the suggested Rimfire would be best all-around match for the Yak, with the possible excepton of the Park 480-1020kV. It (the Rimfire) has generally higher ratings and spins a good sized prop, so what gives in that everyone seems disappointed and is migrating towards motors of 'lesser' specs? I don't care too much about level-flight speed, but I love violent maneuvers and great climbout in a small flight area. What do I need? Thanks, Dave

bzyguy01, Did you ever check to see which motor it is that you're using? 16M? Thanks, Dave
ORIGINAL: bzyguy01 The Hacker bird was much more impressive than the Rimfire powerd bird. The Hacker was an A30 but I forget which # it was. I'll look at it later and post it.
RE: Separate gyro and Rx
Yes, It's a Futaba 9CHP.... a (9) channel - (C)omputer - (H)eli - (P)CM. It's got the synthesizer module so you can select whatever channel you want to use via a couple of trimpot-style microswitches on the back side. And yes, it has provisions for the eCCPM 120 degree swash, so it'll work fine with the CP. There's also a thread on this forum that detailed programming this the 9chp for the CP.

RE: Separate gyro and Rx
Thanks, I don't know why that hadn't occurred to me. I'm pretty new to electric r/c, and all I've actually dealt with so far are the 3 and 4-in-1 units, so that's where my mind was at. As for radios, I have several Tx's here that I can use....of those, I'll probably use the 9chp since it has the synth module, and also I can tame things down a bit with it.

So, I've got a complete airframe w/Esky servos sitting here. I also have a couple of micro 6ch recievers (a Dynam and an Align) sitting here doing nothing, as well as a Telebee HH piezo gyro. All I'm going to need to do is add a stock E-flite 3-in-1 controller to make all this work, right? Thanks.

Servo differences and requirements
Hello, new Raptor 30 V2 owner here....this is my first nitro heli (been flying small electrics) and I have a few questions regarding servos. First of all, I realize the torque specs on the servos in question are a bit overkill, but I like having plenty of reserve. 1) How much difference will your really see between the upper-end Futaba servos in the $80 to $110 range (in particular, the S9250 ($100), S9252 ($80), and S9451 ($80)) Are these on a pretty even keel when it comes to accuracy, repeatibility, and zeroing? 2) Is it really worth spending $100 on the S9250 over $80 S9252 or S9451? It starts to add up when you have to buy four or five servos.... 3) Alternatively, how about the S3050 with it's slightly slower speed of .20s/60deg? This one is about 1/2 the cost at $50.... Thanks for your time.

RE: Spektrum and Realflight
Well, no parrot here, but thanks for the thoughts. :) I agree that some of those counter guys will definitely take advantage if given the opportunity....I was actually considering a USED 9chp purchase, if I even decided to go that route at all. I'm sure the Spektrum is way more than enough radio for me skill-wise, but the more I'm looking into it over tha past couple days, the more I'm thinking that the 9chp would suit me better in the long run since I have several models already and plan on getting more.....remember, with the 9c I can simply select the new channel and not have to replace crystals (the ones I've looked at have the module installed), and I can use the one Tx for ALL of my models. That's my biggest motivation, along with the fat that I'm getting ready to purchase a E-Flite Mini Ultra Stick, and I need seven channels since I want to implement the flaperon option. Overkill? Yes, but I can pick up a used 9c for only about $100 more than the Spektrum. We'll see, I'm not 100% decided yet....just wanted to get ideas to ponder. I'd still like to get the RealFlight sim too. I could see that one potentially paying for itself over time. Thanks again....any other thoughts or comments are welcome.

Spektrum and Realflight
Hello all, I've been flying a Blade CX for a couple weeks, and now I have a modified Blade CP coming on the way to me. Should be here by the first of the week. Anyway, I've been reading the posts here and I've become interested in the DX6 system to put in it since everyone says it makes the CP more controllable. On the other hand, someone at the LHS said it's not worth messing with due to the more limited 3 point throttle curve.....this is all new to me. Thoughts? Or, should I just eat it and go all the way for a 7chp or 9chp? The extra capability and future compatibility sure looks enticing. On the other hand, would the initial cash outlay be better spent on the Realflight G3 simulator, and just stick with the stock radio system for now? For those who have been there already, which way would you go looking back on it now? Thanks, I've really been enjoying the board! Dave

RE: Woo hoo! I got a Pico Z!
ORIGINAL: thenamshow123 hey i saw this and just had to get one, it spins even with full opposite trim will this happen at full throttle?
It does this on takeoff, I've found, but give it some quick throttle to get it on up in the air and it will stabilize. As the battery weakens and/or you vary the rpm, it will want to spin on you too....just make subtle corrections. These things are a blast! Btw, this is my first post here, so I should say hello. I just bought one each of these Picoos for my wife and myself last week. It was so much fun, we went and bought a Blade CX on Saturday. And now, as of today, I have a Precision Heli Micron V-2 on the way. I flew r/c planes a long time ago but got out of it about 15 yrs ago....these electric 'copters are pulling me back in to r/c FAST! [:D]
