RE: F3A Judges Corner . . ask a question
Someone correct me if I am wrong, please, but I believe that there is 1 point downgrade for deviation "up to 15 degress", 2 points for deviation from 15 to 30 etc. So any visible deviation should be downgraded, I believe that actually you lose the first point as soon as the judge is sure that there was not a perfectly straight line.

RE: A Step Change in Judging - Improvement through technology
I absolutely agree with your point about gracefulness and presentation. This tread though is about "improvement through technology". So I think that some mental excercise in that direction cannot hurt. In any case, it is not likely to happen anytime soon. Pure "AI judging" will probably never be used.

Both pilots and judges would have to learn to recognize the correct geometry I guess... surely a change for the better?

RE: A Step Change in Judging - Improvement through technology
No GPS I am afraid - but a simple transmitter in the plane, plus 3 receivers on the ground, can reconstruct the flight path very succesfully. Imagine 3 rf range meters working and logging constantly, the rest is simple triangulation that every PC can do. This is how passive air traffic radars work... not sure about the resolution that can be achieved though. Imagine if the 3D path can be plotted in some computer program, where you can watch it from all angles etc... kind of scary, isnt it.. [;)] If we can do this, the rest is a rather difficult task for programmers - to make a fair judging software which can compare the flight path to some ideal template, with certain transformations allowable (i.e. size) without downgrading, and then diviations from ideal would have to be evaluated (geometry, radiuses etc) and downgraded. In general, a long way to go ... but doable with current technology I am sure. I can imagine quite a strong "political" opposition to this though...

RE: What is the real story from Portugal?
Been there, seen the finals (and semis and a lot of the preliminaries too). I must say that twoturnspin is rather correct in his observations. The main problem, as I see it, is that the judges do not have the guts to downgrade the "big names" enough for obvious mistakes. Or maybe they do not see them. Either way, this is something that hurts this category immensely.

RE: Best way to fix a flying mistake
Another thing that works for me: if you over- or underrotate spin or snap roll, leave the correction until it is not so obvious what you do. Like into the next radius. Radiuses in general are very good for corrections: the plane changes orientation anyway, so the correction is easier to hide. Even if they notice what you do, they may be more benevolent because you do it the "expert way".

RE: Downline Braking : ESC set up query
In both the Master and Spin (Hacker/Jeti) esc you can set the level of braking. Interestingly, too much brake can be less efficient than the "right" amount of brake (probably the prop blades turn too slow, with stalled airflow..). In my case, Hacker C50 XL13, the sweet spot is between 20 and 26%.

RE: Glow vs. Electric. Let the discussion begin.
Guys please remember that this is pattern forum. I understand pattern to be a category where people compete flying precision maneuvres and are being judged in the process. Any mention of 40 or 60 class glow motor in fact does not belong here. Judging pros and cons of electric vs glow means comparing competitive pattern setups - 110 to 170 or 200 sized engines and 2 to 3 kW electric motors and their use in pattern training and competitons.

RE: Glow vs. Electric. Let the discussion begin.
For me, only electric. Having my plane set up in under 5 minutes, clean, consistent power (yes, with the modern cells it is very consistent). Packs getting cheaper and better every year, the airframe lasts for ever, servos do not wear down by vibrations, no complaints about the noise from anybody... I can understand why people like/use glow when they have a lot of experience and lot of money already invested in the equipment. For newbies though, electric makes much more sense, imho.

To learn, some 4 years ago, that crosswind compensation during radiuses is mostly done with ailerons. Bernd Beschorner was so kind to come to one of our local competitions and to comment our flights and help us improve. Thanks again, Bernd!

RE: hyperion digials for pattern planes
I was using them in my Leviosa the whole 08 season - they are good! Centering, speed, strenght, all was very good. I had two of the 20 FMD on ailerons, the 20 UMD rudder (unlimited power!), two of 13 ACBs on elevator halves. Could not have been more satisfied. After 200 flights did not see any slop or degradation in performance.

Maybe not... the smoke trail gets blown aside during the stall turn, it is not the best indicator. And the wind tends to emphasize this.

RE: ESC Timing ?
ORIGINAL: Ricardo M. I wanted to know how does the timing afect the performance of the motor? I am running a Hacker C50 13 XL competition with the Master 90-O-Acro competition ESC. The timing I use is 0°. What happened if I change the timing? What is the best timing for this motor? I am useing an APC 20x15, is there any relation between the timing and the propeller. Thank you. Ricardo.
I spoke to Rainer Hacker at the Euro Champs about the timing. He told me 2 degress, from 0 to 4 it is ok, in any case the motor is quite insensitive to the timing. I have even seen one guy leave 24 degrees (from previous outrunner) and use it with the Hacker C50 14XL. It was running seemingly quite ok, he did not do any measurements. Then realized. Do not try this at home, though. I use 2 degress, 3,1V cutoff, on the Jeti Spin 99. Hacker C50 14 XL, with 20x13 3-blade, Hyperion VX 5000s. Absolutely no issues, plenty of power. Flying most of the time to the soft cutoff.

After some experimenting, mach has also gone to 11s2p and he reports that the power is very good. His new Leviosa is light enough to stay under 5 kg even with the 11s. Considering the shorter sequences beginning from P09, I believe that the A123s may become a viable solution...

RE: A123 Cells
I will step in to respond on Mach's behalf... He uses the clasic DeWalt pack cells, i.e. 2300 cells in 10s2p So far testing with 6 T HiRotex outrunner, but propped up (from 20x11 to 22x12) Data logging to be done soon So far quite a good impression (better than expected), good for 9 minute flights, Mach says "I would like to have some 5% of power more and it would be perfect". The available power seems to stay constant or even feels like going slightly up throughout the flight. Mach is experienced F3A competition pilot of many years, who used to fly all kinds of glow, gas, you name it, and he was the Czech electric F3A pioneer since 2003. He also manufactured the Rhapsody for Jason Shulman to fly at the WC in Poland. Experiments will follow with a new version of HiRotex, also it would be nice to borrow the Hacker XL 12 for few flights. Obviously the A123 is missing a bit in the Wh/kg parameter, but has 2 advantages: full charge in exactly 30 minutes, and maybe, just maybe, much longer cycle life compared to Lipo. We surely hope that the technology may be developed a bit further.
