RE: RC Shark
Well, it's been a LONG time since I popped in here with progress of my shark! Sad thing is, though, I don't have the shark any more, since it got rather ruined in a house move! [:(] However, all is not lost, since I've been revisiting the idea a lot lately, and quite fancy reworking the model's structure to be more "user-friendly!" since the original version was a pain to work.

Well, after a while of not posting on here, I've got some pics of my shark with a little cosmetic work done: [image]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v655/DazDaMan/R-C%20shark/Bruceshots007.jpg[/image] [image]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v655/DazDaMan/R-C%20shark/Bruceshots006.jpg[/image] [image]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v655/DazDaMan/R-C%20shark/Bruceshots002.jpg[/image] Sorry about the crappy picture quality, but this one makes the model look more like its subject: [image]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v655/DazDaMan/R-C%20shark/Brucehead-on2.jpg[/image] I actually bought one of those little R/C sharks with the moving tail - it is AWESOME!! [:D] The bath just isn't big enough for it, though!

Yeah, I've seen that one in action (video downloaded from somewhere). It works, but in my opinion it swims like an epileptic stickleback! [sm=lol.gif] Keep seeing them pop up on eBay. I did, however, pick one of these beasts up from eBay: [image]http://img.epinions.com/images/opti/db/2c/kifmToysAllWow_Wee_Remote_Control_Cyber_Shark1-resized200.jpg[/image] It does work, but the bath ain't big enough! Not sure of anywhere local that I can try it out (unless I can beg our high school to let me use their pool!)

RE: RC Shark
Damn! Finally found this old thread! lol OK, so I was off sick from work today, and decided to do some work on Bruce. I haven't done much to him in a long time as I'm waiting for lead ballast to arrive(!![:@]!!) so I can get back to work on the interior. Now, it's not finished - there's still painting etc to be done, so I'm not expecting everyone to go, "Wow! That rocks!", but I thought I'd show it to you all anyway...!! RE: Full Size Spitfire Replica
I've seen the Enforcer before - pity none are flying around, as it'd make a great addition to the show circuit. Talking about modern-day Mustangs, I read that the Supermarine Aircraft Spitfire Mk26 could possibly be used for things like coastal surveillance, fire spotting and SAR ops.

About $250,000, and I think the Alli is about 1350hp. Would have to check to make sure about that, though. Props are cut-down DC-3.

RE: I just saw an ME-109 fly over my house!
Last time I saw a Buchon, it was being chased like mad by a P-40 over an airfield in Scotland! [:D] This was, of course, the Old Flying Machine Co's Buchon, in which Mark Hanna sadly crashed in and later died. [sm=crying.gif] The year before that, Mark and his father Ray were over the same place, dogfighting in the Spitfire and Buchon. [:D] Have to say that N109W is the BEST-looking Buchon restoration I've seen yet!

RE: RC Shark
Well, sorry I haven't posted any updates for a while - been a little busy - however, Bruce had some significant work done on him recently: he now has new FINS! I figured the original set wouldn't be strong enough, especially at higher speeds, or if in collision with something (a duck?!), so made some new ones from 10mm balsa. I also shortened his tail by two inces. In fact, I think he looks a lot better now! Going away on holiday next week, so not much will be done to him until I get back!! Anyway, here's the latest shot, with some others for comparison. [image]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v655/DazDaMan/R-C%20shark/Brucemodels.jpg[/image] (The two rubber sharks in the foreground are 1ft and 2ft long respectively, the one in the middle is about 4.5ft, to give you some idea of scale! A bit more sanding to the right shape, then it's out with the sanding sealer! I need to build the last two fins, and then get to work on the innards. Gonna be fun! [:D]

RE: RC Shark
OK chaps, I finally pulled out a digit or three and set to Bruce tonight with some sandpaper and a vengeance! [:D] I spent a bit of time applying "plastic wood" to Bruce's face and jaws, and goddamn was it disgusting to work with! Compare it to the previous shot, and you'll see quite a difference in the shape of the upper and lower jaws (at least I think so!) The eyes are just applied with a black marker, although I think I might have figured out a way to make them ultra-realistic! (Apologies for the pictures looking a bit below-par, I was trying to get them before the batteries died! [IMG]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v655/DazDaMan/R-C%20shark/Brucelatest-29.jpg[/IMG] Bruce has his head! [:D] OK, so it's not quite the fine, polished, toothy grin of the "real" Bruce, but it's getting there. [IMG]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v655/DazDaMan/R-C%20shark/Brucehead-on-29.jpg[/IMG] The gaps in the wood will be filled and sanded, while the rough edges will be sanded smooth, hopefully this week.

RE: Question for CaptainNemo12
Yeah, the mini-sub was dynamic. Four-channel minis or micros would be fine for a working jaw, but that's the least of my worries for this one! [:D] I do think it would work, though!

RE: Question for CaptainNemo12
It's an idea I've had in my head the past few months, after seeing a 12" mini-sub in a magazine (with free plan, too!). The sub was made from styrene and had full-size gear in it (I think). The 20" shark I have here would be a good size - certainly room for mini servos, possibly full-size, too! The designer of the sub used 3 functions on his sub, and I was thinking something along those lines - I'd sacrifice the working jaw for a model that worked properly, though!

RE: Question for CaptainNemo12
Actually, had a better idea. I used a line-drawing of a Megalodon shark for a basis (excuse the crudeness of the drawing!! [:D]) The motor is built into the body (so that it's solid and easier to build) while the tail section hinges just aft of it. The tail could be flattened so that the flow of water past the prop isn't affected, or the tail section could be a sort of tube that narrows down to the tail, but remains open for the water to flow past. That's just my take on it!

RE: Question for CaptainNemo12
I reckon that might be feasible, yeah! One thing, though. The motor would have to be mounted in something solid in the tail, or at least in the tail section, would it not? I'm wondering whether that would complicate the construction of it.

RE: Question for CaptainNemo12
OK, I was wrong, it's a whole 1.75" wide!! Which means the model I was thinking of for a basis would be too small, too. I have one here that is about 20" long, and a maximum width of 3" around the middle.

RE: Question for CaptainNemo12
What, you mean one like this? [image]http://www.h2opoolproducts.com/catalog/images/rainbow_reef_shark_med.jpg[/image] I've got one of these at home, and I'm not sure that would work - the body cavity is mostly a compartment for the two AA-size batteries, with the rest probably taken up by the mechanism for moving the tail, and also plenty of space for it to fill up with water. There's also not much in the way of space; I think the body's about an inch and a half wide, max!! Unless, of course, I discard the body altogether and make a new one, and slot the tail section into that somehow?

Thanks for that. I was under the impression that it was smaller for some reason - don't ask me why, I was probably having a blonde moment!! I was thinking of a shark that was quite small, say 18", maybe less(!!), for micro gear. You know, kinda thing you could use in the bath!

Yeah, the head is separate - it requires a heck of a lot more thought than the body does!! Andrew (the guy who allowed me to see his wooden U-boat) reckons that a good layer of sanding sealer or two will be good enough - his U-boat is done as such, and he's never had a problem with it.
