RE: Tank Availability in the USA
ORIGINAL: Buckeye36 None of the HL 1/16 tanks are in their US warehouse, just 1/24th scale tanks. They want $46 shipping from the International warehouse for HL's.
That is pretty strange as they list that they have stock in the USA warehouse with the exception of a couple of Panzer III's. The shipping shows up as less than if you were to order from China. Personally I have ordered parts and a tank from RCtankwars/Phil as he goes through every tank and he is in California and I am in the State next to him so quick knowlegable service with a smile.... I hope :) It's a buyer beware world out there so do your research and take a gamble or go with a reputable dealer. my two cents, Tom

RE: Inexpensive HL IR upgrade
You are right that is one other persons perception I am the other person and I am saying that it was not at all difficult. We don't know this other persons abilities and you all do not know my abilities so take it for what the internet/forum is worth. So you have one vote for and one vote against.....your mileage may vary. My experience was ok, I drew upon the knowledge of the wonderful people on this forum and had little problems. Having said that it was no walk in the park but easy enough I believe anyone could do it with a reasonable amount of basic soldering skills. And yes it is an IR kit that is recogizable by the HL factory tanks only. Tom

RE: Inexpensive HL IR upgrade
Actually, the upgrade kit from Matomart to change a non S&S tank or the BB version to an IR version is only $55.00 and it doesn't take to much in soldering skills to complete. I have only one HL factory S&S IR tank and one BB HL S&S tank converted to IR (and it still shoots BB's) and two non S&S tanks that have been converted to IR and they also still shoot BB's. I have no one around me for hundreds of miles who is into RC tanks so I make my own fun with my 4 HL IR tanks. I have less than $700.00 invested for all 4 tanks converted. The one thing I wish to control would be the wiggle when hit crap and the one thing I would like to add would be some LEDs to show when I hit or get hit, one thing at a time. Good luck with your choices and better luck with your boys, Tom PS - the upgrade kit comes with an new RX18 and transmitter. http://matomart.com/prodview.php?p=761

RE: 3D Printer for Building Tanks
ORIGINAL: Martellus That is the cheapest I have seen yet! Very interesting and much more affordable than the makerbot or others I usually think of. However, where are examples of what It can make? I would like to see tangible evidence of its printing.
That is our collective question at the moment, it's controller is based on a proven board in the 3D printer public domain, ie. reprap, makerbot, printrbot. The crowd funding this project are ready to see some prints...even the most basic of prints would be ok with us. Due to ship out next month

RE: 3D Printer for Building Tanks
Here is the hobby 3D printer that I have crowd invested in and soon to be shipping out. Basically $300 for the printer and $50 in shipping any where in the world, at this price I thought why not. It will use the standard 1.75mm filament and you can use any of the free software to drive it. (ReplicatorG, Slic3D) check it out if your interested, Tom http://www.makible.com/projects/7-makibox-a6-the-300-desktop-3d-printer Ps - This is a hobby 3d printer and will not do what the $30K printers will do...just thought I would add this to possibly head off the statements and questions regarding printer resolution. This will do the same as the printerbot, makerbot, mendelbrot, prusa...etc.

Sweet! Can you explain how or what you put in the mold to keep the link pins holes open? And what material are you using for the pour? I have never tried casting plastics yet, but I have just invested some money on a 3D plastic extruder. Will see how that works for small plastic detail parts and such. Tom

Nice pictures; as far as climbing on the tanks I am sure that you and your son walked carefully on them as to not hurt them LOL. I know they don't want people falling off of them but they are tanks for god's sake and every little boy and many big boys just have an urge to want to explore... I would have also climbed on them and just said I could not read....if I got caught that is.

RE: Does the HL IR system even work?
I have 4 HL tanks with IR and they work fine for what they are and outdoors on a bright sunny day 30-40 ft was about the average range for all 4. Capture the flag in a timed situation is always a good one or just plain duking it out with 2 team's of 2. The point is to have fun, some day I will save enough to upgrade all the tanks to a better system but for now I am having a blast (pun intended). Tom

Very cool, I knew someone out there had to have done something. This person used the Lego NXT as the controller but it is the same idea as the Arduino. The target tracking was accomplished by an IR emitter on the target, cool stuff.

RE: Why not the Arduino?
Both the Pro and the mini Pro are the same just the size is different, now the difference with the Pro boards and say the Mega is quite a lot. I recommend visiting the Sparkfun site to ascertain all of the differences. Besides the size and price the Mega has more digital inputs/outputs, built in USB and so much more but is also more expensive and might be overkill for such a simple system as RC tanks.....but then again who knows how much functionality one needs and since weight is not an issue on tanks as it is for aircraft it might be a viable option. Edit: Added this link to the Sparkfun Arduino buyers guide - http://www.sparkfun.com/tutorials/148

RE: Shaping the future of IR battles, together
Maybe I should not post as I have never battled anyone except for my friends and family with my 4 HL tanks with the HL IR system (5 hits and your get restarted no matter what type/size of tank you have). We have had a lot of fun so far with no 45 degree defense or slope defense and also NOT using the super-spin but fun nontheless. I cannot afford to outift 4 tanks with the Tamiya TBU/DMD, too many other things going on life. I have been reading through this thread and there are many good points that are being made, my 2 cents says that if you spend so much time making your tanks LOOK like the real things why not make them ACT like the real things? I would really like to be able to battle in the future with some Tamiya clubs but unless there is an inexpensive option for me I will forever be using the HL IR system. In another thread regarding the Arduino I have asked if anyone would like to join me in trying a collective hand at making a Tamiya compatiple system that can be hooked up to the HL tanks. I first need to find someonoe close enough to me that has a Tamiya tank that I can try the yet to be designed system out on. All in all if you model realistically then you should strive for realism in the battle systems to a point where it is still fun but as real as you can get, again my 2 cents as a new comer to RC tanks. As I do not know all of the variables involved with the Tamiya systems this is purely just an observation. Thanks for listening, DT (Tom)

RE: Why not the Arduino?
Martellus, The pro mini board is $19 http://www.sparkfun.com/products/9218, you will also need a USB cable (A to B) ($4) http://www.sparkfun.com/products/512 and the FTDI basic breakout ($15) http://www.sparkfun.com/products/9716. The cable and the breakout are so you can connect the board to your computer to download the program to the Arduino. All these prices are from www.sparkfun.com, there are many other places that carry these boards even Amazon.com but Sparkfun has the best service and almost always has stuff in stock and if they are out of stock then just give it a week and it is usually back in stock. I am running the Pro board and not the mini, the pro board is $1 more and is a little larger http://www.sparkfun.com/products/9219. Now you will need to also pick up some resisitors, transistors and some Mosfet controllers to hook up the motors to. These electronics parts are very inexpensive and can be had at any electronics supply store, ie. Radioshack. It might sound like alot but it really is not and writing code with all of the example libraries that exist is actually very easy. Anyone interested in collaborating on a project? Let's talk and see what we can come up with....we could even make it so that the new Arduino can send and recieve IR from the Tamiya based tanks and be fully customizable with any sounds and tank speeds, etc. Tom
