RE: E-flight, give me a break!
You know guys, we fly these 1/2 a motors because we want to... it's a choice. It is also a way of paying respects to those wonderful memories we had cranking up Babe Bees and Tee Dees when we were kids. I know that's what it does for me. Despite the fact that the electric motor made for better performance on an earlier post, I guarantee you that guy can still get what he paid for it.. from guys like us... that remember those earlier times. I'm not even about to take a swing at the "mine does something better than yours" comments...'cause I flat dab don't care..... but I will tell you this...if you've ever heard a Tee Dee come screaming out of a split S doing so many turns you just knew it would self destruct, and listened to it go screaming by you...you don't need to even question why we fly them....because you know. RE: Mach 1 Laser Kit Build
Leo, Digital cameras absolutly love FLASH!!!! You'll find that even if the camera doesn't automatically select the flash for the picture, that the picture will look better if you use it. Your camera should have a setting for "dedicated" flash regardless of lighting. I also agree w/the other guys comments on resolution settings. That should put you right up and ready for high style photos. Dan

I agree with everyone that we need to get together. I talked with David last week and it seems there is a lot of the "burn out" going on and a lot of it is related to the economy in general. We are going to get together in a week or so and fly. Roger, when are you available...would be great to have you there too. Need to put the fun back into all this. I'm in for anything/everything we can come up with. Been way too long since we got together. Dan Carolina Custom Aircraft

RE: Atlanta 60 and Engine - HELP
As Glowplugboy suggested, the Atlanta MUST have a pumped engine such as the YS .60 or .61 or OS RE pumper. Reason being is that the fuel tank is on the C/G and is much higher than the carb needle valve. This is what you are finding out in that your engine is flooding out constantly. Find you and OS or YS on #bay and have a ball. Dan Carolina Custom Aircraft

HI Will, Funny how these old "stories" just don't seem to go away. I'm presently trying to get in touch with Dougie to get the real info. Jeff, I think that 1 1/2 was per side for a 3 " total. I've been looking thru all my pictures and can't find a one of the Superception... but I'll bet one is out there.... as someone wise once said..... somebody knows everything and where it is..... it just isn't me.... gotta keep looking. RE: Babcock Aeronca ready for maiden
Russ, Congratulations on a very unique project. I do agree that the plane may be 5-9 ozs. more than a Jr. Falcon/Mini Mambo I'd be willing to bet it flies just fine. Reason being is that I have a yellow Cox Fairchild 24 which weighs a TON and even so flies beautifully with an .049 (queen bee I think). The Fairchild has a very sharp LE but flies beautifully and is capable of some really wild aerobatics. I hope you have good luck with yours.... always great to see history take to the wing again. RE: Wing Core Panel's - Little Warp, Get it Out?
Vince, That "little curve" in the LE is probably just the result of stresses being relieved when the foam was first cut. When you sheet the wing (not with Sorgham) and put the weight on top of the wing half all will be well. Use 1 hr. epoxy to put on the wing skins. Basically you mix up the epoxy, break out the 1" brushes and a HEAT GUN.... brush on the epoxy, hit it with the heat gun which makes it flow like water and then brush/scrape the epoxy to where you want it... all you want is a basic sheen to the wood... certainly not a shine... using as little as possible. Keep a roll of toilet paper handy to soak up if you get heavy handed w/the epoxy....place the bottom skin, press in the core.. do the top skin... put on top shuck and apply the weight..(200 plus pounds)... wait 24 hours and life is good trip edges and you are home free. Now... if the "little curve" is a curved CUT where the wing half wasn't cut straight...(compare to the other side).. then it is unusable and needs to be replaced.... not fixed. hope this helps... give me a buzz if you'd like. RE: Where to buy old R/C systems (but with modern electronics)?
Russ, The Heathkits were all the rage here in central NC in the late 60s/early 70s. Ed May, who had the hobby shop in Durham was a Controlaire dealer and is where my original Mule system came from. He also sold FM and I remember a couple of Orbits. When he switched over from R/C to custom auto paint jobs the North Hills Hobby shop took over R/C distribution in the late 60s. I can remember the first time I saw a Kraft Gold Medal system...WOW... I would really like to get together and start collecting some of the "relics" from the 60s.. Your Citizenship TX is just beautiful. I've never seen one in person.... but looks like they took as much care with their equipment as most manufacturers did during that time. I'm still looking for a set of Controlaire reeds for a Sr. Falcon and a MAN 2 3 4... and they are out there.... I just need to find them. BTW..... 27mhz "shot out of the sky" was no myth..... I had my Jr. Falcon do a series of spins from about 300 feet right down to the ground...plane would get hit and spin... recover...hit again.. spin.. etc... not pretty and you really felt pretty helpless... but the MAIN culpret at Duke Athletic Field where we flew was DUKE University's high power , round the world radio system. When they keyed up... NOTHING was safe.. all the Receivers just locked up and planes just spun in... I think the record was 3 at one time... including MINE.... funny how you don't forget things like that.. Good luck with your future projects Russ... I've just received a Sterling Tri Pacer that just needs coveriing.... take care, Dan Carolina Custom Aircraft

RE: Futabab FP-8SSAP vintage?
The radio you have is a late 1984 vintage 512 Futaba PCM radio. As you said, only transmits in PCM 512 and to my knowledge can't be converted.... but I'd talk to Radio South before I made that assumption. Honestly, it was one of the most attractive radios that Futaba ever made. When it came out single stick was falling from favor and I can't remember seeing many of them at contests. Futaba did make a dual conversion 512 receiver that you can find on #bay now and then so it certainly is flyable. Good luck with your find. I have a complete manual for the 2 stick 512 which should get you all the features... let me know and I'll see if I can't scan it. Dan Carolina Custom Aircraft

RE: Kraft radio,receiver and servos
Frequency change not withstanding.... the "feel" of a Kraft radio is something the present day manufacturers only dream about. While the Sport Series radios were price point and a good value...I still have five Kraft radios that have either already been updated, or will be at some time. I don't know whether it was the weight, the way the gimbals felt or the balance in your hands, you just felt like you got what you paid for when you bought a Kraft. I am still kicking myself for never ordering a Kraft Signature series. I'll get one someday...hopefully. Anybody got one they want to get rid of ?? As the other guys said, Radio South can take of your Kraft radio very well. They will give you the options and the prices.... and you'll be supporting a company right here in the US...imagine that.. a US made radio serviced by a US company..... WOW.. what a concept.... RE: Elevator Servo in Exhaust Path
I think Taurus Flyer has the right idea for you. You can make a wooden plug exactly the size of your servo that you need to cover and then just form it like you would a canopy. I make "hatch covers" for all of my external servos with only the servo arm exposed to the air. Since your servos are in the fuselage airstream, I think his suggestion is very workable. RE: RETRACTS
In the "old" days of pattern when Rhom Airs ruled the main reason for a leak in the system was guys using an xacto knife to cut the air lines from the brass fittings. Even though it didn't look like it, each one of these "cuts" would result in a groove being cut in the fitting and a resulting leak down. Fix was simple.. DON'T CUT THE LINES OFF.... so if you have old Rhom Airs, look at the fittings first. Soap bubbles are a great way to find leaks. Pattern ships without retracts just aren't pattern ships. Yep, I know everything now looks like a pregnant guppy with everthing hanging in the wind.... but then again... pattern doesn't even have a fifth as much participation as it used to.... the way the planes look is probably part of it. BTW... I also use MK mechanicals as well as Dave Browns which work great with very little maintenance.... but the retracts I treasure are my set(s) of Kraft electrics.... so cool... and I've never had one fail on me..... take the time and learn to master retracts... it's worth it Dan Carolina Custom Aircraft

rcguy, Yes, production of the EU1 A is behind. The main issue has been finishing up a new mold for the belly pan and then getting a few other issues worked out. I'm certainly sorry for the delay as there are quite a few guys waiting... but I'm sure each one of them would rather have an excellent quality kit rather than a "hurried into production" kit. RE: Wife bothered by epoxy glue. Alternate solution?
Jim, According to a lot of the posts one the internet continued exposure to epoxy will eventually cause a physical allergy. At Carolina Custom Aircraft my wife and I both use gloves and a barrier cream when laying up fuselages/parts/etc.,... but we have had no issues with airborne particles. Luckily, my wife (head of Quality Control) has no issues with epoxy but I believe without proper protection that these alllegies will show up. There is too much evidence of this happening to ignore it. It appears your wife already is very sensitive to epoxy fumes. I'll have to chime in with the other guys (ok, not with the one who suggested a new wife/girlfriend) and suggest you switch over to the other types of wood glues or the best solution would be to build you a small shop. You'd be amazed what you can build in a 15 x 10 building!!! I have allergies to other chemicals but I'd be in deep trouble if it was epoxy. I think the best solution is a new shop. take care, Dan Carolina Custom Aircraft
