Blade 400: Good Trainer???
Quick, albeit convoluted, intro. I'm into high-power rockets, and I'm building 2 RC rocket gliders, E-G power. So I need a radio. I know a cheap Neon 3ch. will do it, but I fell in love w/electric helos at iHobby expo. I also plan on some planes, park flyers at first, then maybe more. I got a great Helo magazine at the show...dug up lotsa info on the hobby here & elsewhere on the net, I kinda know what's what re. the classes & capabilites in electric helos. I know/hear bigger is actually easier to learn on, I want to be able to fly outdoors, and, lucky bass turd that I am, I live 5 min away from a 168,000 sq.ft. indoor sports complex w/2 indoor soccer fields (soft ground!) and tons of other space, and they said I could fly there when & where areas aren't booked http://www.libertyville.com/index.asp?NID=95 So 400-450 class it is. I plan on getting sim software & practicing a lot....and I know the 3D capabilities of the Blade 400 are irrelevant until I learn how not to crash..which can take a while. But I DO plan on getting good, and I want something I can grow into rather than something I'll master & then get bored with. BUT....The DX6i radio looks perfect for all my needs....I love brushless motors...eflite is a great name, if not quite a trex. So if the 400 can be detuned into a somewhat forgiving trainer, it'd clearly be an amazing package for the money. Am I asking too much, or can this helicopter be a good trainer? What can I do to dumb it down, performance wise? Get regular, assymetrical blades...maybe a bit heavier? I assume training gear can be used...right? Anything else? Lastly...is there any chance I can use this copter w/a cheap, light wireless video camera as a 'rocket spotter'? Where we launch, if you go astray (far too common in HP rocketry!) there are a few impenetrable, reeedy/woody/swampy areas that where you can't see a rocket on the ground unless you step on it. It'd be great to send up a spotter-copter to look straight down. The 400 would have enough muscle for this, wouldn't it (again, maybe/probby with blades designed for normal flight rather than 3D)? Thanks!

RE: Want a parking lot rock star Revo. Need advise
Good luck...in the brand-new RCCA, they had a "Fastest RC Cars/Trucks" contest. The fastest MT was a heavily modified Savage @ 61mph. It was slammed SUPER low...had a custom body...tons of modifications, and that's all they got out of it. A revo's lighter, but I think 60 isn't gonna happen...unless you drop TONS of $$ into it.

RE: whats the advantages of digital servos over analog
Sorry to disagree, but digital servos are still great if you're using a basic/stock radio. The speed and strength are there...yes they use more power (that has nothing to do w/your radio sophistication), but they're still the best choice for anyone upgrading their servo. Really, that's mostly due to coreless motors...which are better for centering & overall reliability. Bottom line, though, is that if you're shopping for a high strength/pretty high speed coreless-motored, metal-geared servo (all great features)...digital servos are your ONLY OPTIONS!!! I've had a Hitec 5945 from the get-go w/my stock Maxx radio, and it's great! My 2700mah NiMH pack sure helps, though!!

I guess you kinda did say what I said, but it didn't read (to me) that you were warning him NOT to let that happen. But upon review, it's kind of implied. RE: carb closing when braking
While you might be right that the idle screw adjusts the level of carb closure (contrary to what I said), I KNOW you should not use the trim settings to hold the carb open!!! when at idle, the carb should 'naturally' close as far as it can (as far as the idle screw setting allows). You are NOT supposed to use the trim & servo to hold the carb 'ajar' a bit...there should be NO difference in how your engine sounds when it's at idle vs. when you apply the brake!!!
ORIGINAL: alvinl Adjust the idle screw clockwise to hold the carb open more. The trim on your radio is keeping it open when running, but when you brake there is no tension from the servo to hold it open. Adjust it so the idle screw is holding the carb open at idle and the radio trim is set in the middle.
RE: carb closing when braking
The carb ALWAYS closes when you break...and it always closes ALMOST completely (there's always a bit of 'airflow-room', even if it looks closed); the amount of carb slide-travel isn't adjustible...you didn't adjust anything that made it close more/less. Sounds like you messed w/ the IDLE screw...but really any one could affect how it idles. But bottom line, the carb closing is NOT your issue...a properly-tuned engine can/should idle if you physically push (close) that slide as far as it can go!!

RE: Proline PowerStrokes?
power stroke are for the t maxx or a MGT
NO...the PowerStrokes WERE for the Maxx/MGT/TNX.. They've sadly been discontinued. [:o] And it's not just Tower or someone choosing not to carry them...I called ProLine and asked..they confirmed they're history!! So if you got 'em, I suggest you buy sheetloads of shafts & parts now, before they disappear. And unless you get 'em REAL cheap, I don't suggest you buy them now, as parts will dry up soon (I asked about that & they said they had stock, but once it's gone, it's gone!). Dean

RE: A. Rowand & Phillies Racing MTs HARD!!!
What's so cool is A) It's the NY Times...the third biggest newspaper in the US (and a huge website audience, too). B) They race in their own ballpark before games. C) It's Aaron-fricken' Rowand...a world series champ who today is one of the most high-profile players in baseball (I mean specifically TODAY...cuzza the huge catch that was shown on every national/local sports show in the US last night). I see a clique of fans developing who'll start showing up early just to watch/cheer/bet on the truck races! ESPN/other people are gonna see this story and I know we'll be seeing some actual racing on shows soon. It's just a fun, media-friendly baseball sideline-story that'll get bigger as the season goes on ('specially if the Phillies keep winning!). My god...can you imagine the celebration at Traxxas today?? Dean

RE: A. Roland & Phillies Racing MTs HARD!!!
I forget if you have to enroll in the NY Times to see stories (if you do, it's free). but to save hassles, here's the article (sans the cool pic of him and his Revo): Rowand Intends to Keep on Truckin' By LEE JENKINS PHILADELPHIA, May 11 — Aaron Rowand held an impromptu meeting with some of his teammates this week to discuss the race. The season is only a month old, but Rowand was talking about refueling the tank, revving the engine, finding a higher gear in anticipation of the finish line. The Phillies had to listen, considering that Rowand won the World Series last year with the Chicago White Sox. But they did not have to take him too seriously. As Rowand spoke, an oversize remote-control truck lay near his feet. "Soon, everybody on our team is going to be racing these," Rowand said Wednesday. "Flipping them, jumping them, crashing them — it's just another thing we can do together." The Phillies traded Jim Thome and $22 million to the White Sox for Rowand, not simply because they wanted a heat-seeking center fielder, but also because they needed some energy in their clubhouse. Before games, Rowand races remote-control trucks with his teammates on the outfield grass. Then he throws on his glove and speeds around like a crash-test dummy. Rowand broke his nose and sustained lacerations to his cheek Thursday night against the Mets when he ran face first into the center-field wall chasing a deep drive. After making the improbable catch and saving three runs for the Phillies, Rowand, blood dripping from his chin, was taken to a nearby hospital. Rowand survives accidents almost every day. The Phillies have made their remote-control truck races almost as competitive as their games. As long as the trucks keep off the infield dirt, the grounds crew lets them be. "We're going to build a racetrack soon," reliever Arthur Rhodes said. "And we're going to have a trophy for the winner." The Phillies need Rowand back, not just to snag flies and race trucks. During spring training, he was the player who organized laser tag games and set up bowling nights. The field trips, like the races, might have seemed cheesy if Rowand were not coming off a World Series championship. "I heard that there had been cliques here, not a lot of enthusiasm," Rowand said. "I just tried to be myself. Basically, I tried to be a clown. I really think that's part of the reason they wanted me." The Phillies have tried more serious acquisitions and failed. In recent off-seasons, they picked Thome to be their slugger, Kevin Millwood to be their ace and Billy Wagner to be their closer. But none of those high-priced, high-profile players are here anymore, cast aside for younger and scruffier alternatives. Pat Gillick, Philadelphia's new general manager, must appreciate the title sewn on Rowan's wristbands: Beer Pong Champ. The last time the Phillies made the playoffs, in 1993, they were led by beer guzzlers like Lenny Dykstra, John Kruk and Darren Daulton. This year's group is not as rambunctious, but the Phillies are beginning to develop their own work-hard, play-hard personality. When Rowand was hit Tuesday night with a Pedro Martínez fastball, he stayed in the game despite a left hand that was purple and puffy. "It's what an anti-inflammatory is made for," Rowand said. The Phillies cannot pitch as well as the White Sox, but they hit like a contender and are starting to act like one. Although Thome has bashed 14 home runs for the White Sox, Rowand has batted over .300 and patrolled the sharp angles at Citizens Bank Park. By playing with a purple hand, he is also responding to critics like Wagner, who said that the Phillies used to be overly concerned with their hairstyles and their postgame plans. "The guy is tough," first baseman Ryan Howard said. "From what I know of Aaron, you can't keep him out." He has doubles to rob and races to win. Although many believe the Phillies' recent nine-game winning streak began with a dugout lecture from Manager Charlie Manuel on May 1 in Florida, some players have a different theory. Weeks ago, they started envying Rhodes's collection of remote-control vehicles. On a trip to the hobby shop near his home, Rhodes finally placed an order for his jealous teammates. After the shipment arrived, the Phillies could not lose. These are not the kinds of remote-control cars sold at toy stores. They have gasoline motors and tires with tread. They are painted with players' jersey numbers: Pat Burrell is No. 5, Rowand is No. 33. When No. 5 and No. 33 collide in left-center field, no one has to call for the trainer. "This is what you need sometimes," Rhodes said. "Get out there, waste time, play around and wreck some trucks." Six players have joined the club. Five more have vehicles on the way. When the Phillies' top pitching prospect, Cole Hamels, was promoted Wednesday, he took a leisurely jog alongside Rhodes and Rowand. They were preparing him for the race.

RE: Ofna picco Maxx .21?
I LOVE my Ofna/Picco .21...reliable, never dies, I rarely touched the needles over a whole summer of bashing. But it's been discontinued for well over a year...replaced w/the .26 drop-in. I think you can still get parts, but the question remains; why are you looking at a discontinued engine that sold for the same price as the .26 version now does? And, BTW, this engine was sold/packaged WITH it's own maxx-specific motor mount....so there is/was nothing you had to buy...other than a pipe (it works w/the stock header). Dean

RE: Gonna Throw This Revo Out...
---------Is this your first truck? Do you have a temp guage (and/or, did you have one during break-in)? If you're a newbie...you gotta consider the possibility you cooked the engine, which I did during break in. Learning to tune a nitro engine is tricky, and during the process, many of us have paid the price for our inexperience....ESPECIALLY with 2.5 Traxxas engines; they're very 'high-strung' and temps can easily/quickly soar to the point of damage. Even if this isn't it....bottom line, it's not the truck's/Traxxas' fault you're having problems; many vets attest that you should always open up & seal a new engine before break-in, in case the factory didn't get it quite right....don't assume that just cuz there's a DVD to help that this puts the engine-trouble/"issues" burden on Traxxas!! It was probablyERFECT when you opened the box...YES Traxxas tries to make it easier for newbies than others to learn the ropes, but don't use that as an excuse for blaming Traxxas for something that PROBABLY was caused by YOU! And needle settings are ever cut/dried...you tune by temp, smoke and sound...NOT "SET H.S. NEEDLE 4.53 TURNS FROM CLOSE.." Factory settings ain't gospel..they're suggested starting points from which YOU need to adjust to get things going right. Hopefully it is an airleak & you can fix it...otherwise, pony up either $50 for a sleeve/piston, or like I said, $100-300 for a new engine and get over your motor problems. THEN you can start to enjoy your truck, which IS one of the best you can buy. Dean

I had 'cut-out' problems when the rubber doohickie that connects the header/pipe got ripped...check that out, too. Or, better yet, just get a 3.3 engine via the Traxxas replacement plan (or something better...maybe the Ofna/Picco. .26...a 'real' big-block, etc.)!! Dean

RE: 3Racing shocks T-MAXX
Good news on the rebuilds' EXISTENCE...good luck getting them, and you really should track down 2-6 of them NOW, in case they get discontinued or something. Socks are always a good idea. Dunno if/how they actually extend shock life...but it's gotta be a good thing preventing dirt from getting on the shaft/seals...even if it's hard to actually work it's way in. I think mine are badhorsie or something i got on ebay.

RE: 3Racing shocks T-MAXX
Sorry I couldn't chime in earlier, but I gotta say, it's a big mistake to get shocks (CVDs, too!!) from companies like Team Blue Star (which I did), or...PERHAPS...3 Racing. WHY? Shocks get damaged; shafts bend, membranes rip, seals leak, they just wear out & need rebuilds. TBS has ZERO support/parts for their stuff, and parts are indeed unique to each brand..so when you need help, you're screwed! I bent two shafts, and when I measured the diameter & length, they were slightly wider/shorter than the stock ones I had on hand or the Integy ones I purchased...and the TBS pistons didn't really fit on the shaft that tightly...there's 'play'. I managed to use some seals from my stock maxx shocks that were bigger, so when I crammed on the retainer, there was enough compression to prevent leakage. but that was a bear to do. Bottom line...with 'static' parts like knuckles/arms/turnbuckles/pipes/servo & engine mounts/etc....any brand will do (though, of course, some are better than others). But with MOVING parts like shocks, CVDs and clutches...you really need to stick with name-brands to ensure that you can get parts when you need them...and you ALWAYS WILL need them!!! Integy, RPM, MIP, Unlimited Engineering, Hardcore, Lunsford, Dyanmite, Hot Bodies, Traxxas, Robinson Racing Products, ProLine...THESE are who you need to go to for these kinda parts. Maybe I'm wrong & 3 Racing has an easily-accessible customer service office in the USA that will help you with parts...but I think they're like TBS, who does not!! I forget how, but I managed to track down a human at TBS and he seemed bewildered that I was asking for shock shafts..before telling me he couldn't help me. Don't mean to crap on your celebration, but I want to make sure others who are reading this keep this important info in mind before jumping on ebay for TBS shocks! Dean

Not to crap on this any more, but these pipes are also bad because if you wheelie, the stingers dig into the dirt, get clogged & kill your engine. I guess they're for shelf-queen use only! Sorry dude!!! Dean

RE: I may be a moron!
What I noticed when this sorta happened to me was that the engine would die/sputter when you hit the throttle. You let go...it'd stay alive, but basically you/I killded the compressoin of the sleeve so when there was a lot of gas to burn, it blows by the cylinder & doesn't ignite. The combustion chamber becomes 'leaky'...killing your entire mid & high rev range. I really thin Traxxas should include a temp gauge w/their RTRs!! They KNOW newbies are their largest buyer segment...they KNOW that we cook engines without them...they KNOW that their engines get a crap-rap on this forum & others almost totally BECAUSE newbies have fits!! In bulk, they'd be what....$5 cost?? The P.R. gains alone would make that worthwhile, not to mention that I'm sure they end up replacing/repairing tons of engines at no-charge when someone bee-aches enough in the first week or so after purchase...even if they clearly cooked it!! In experienced hands, the 2.5 got/gets great reviews, but it's a high strung mill...like a turbo 4 cylinder compared to a pushrod 6 (the OS, e.g.) Tons of power out of a small-displacement, lightweight engine but it get hot..it's fussy to tune. Whereas a bigger, sturdier engine might not rev quite as high, but it'll handle abuse better.

Enough bashing...here's what you need: http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXJRU0&P=7 Clearly, it says it's good for putting the .18 Sirio into a Revo, and even if you don't need the header, having a spare's a great thing! RE: Werks racing
They only have one 'product' that I know of...their off-road (MTs/buggies) adjustible clutch. It's supposed to be pretty great & it's kinda unique as most clultches like that are on-road...but it's pretty $$$. Now...they DISTRIBUTE tons of great products & have done so for some time. They are the exclusive US distributor for Picco (though, of course, Picco also makes models for OFNA...some Orion stuff, etc.) , Lamberto Collari and a few other brands. I've gotten them on the phone to ask some questions back when I got my .21 mid-block (a Picco engine..it started the oversize Maxx 'drop-in" craze about 2-3 years ago). I ended up getting the OFNA version, but because of their service, and the fact that a top-brand like Picco trusts them, makes me think overall that they're 'good people'. Dean

It's not just the plastic (I don't even think that's any diferent)...Revo shafts have a completely different 'spline' design. This page shows the two shafts side by side...HUGE difference!! http://www.traxxas.com/products/nitro/revo/revo25/features/drivetrain/Dc01.htm So if they somehow work in your Maxx center...GREAT!! I haven't heard of Revo owners shredding stock driveshafts at all. even with BIG block engines!! Sure, some still buy metal CVDs, but that's just for show. Now, I saw those telescoping shafts on eeebbbaaayy [8|][:'(] I wouldn't touch them w/a 12 foot pole. Not just cuz they look lame, but moreso cuz you can't get replacement parts if/when something wears out. W/MIP & other CVDs, you CAN!!! The key for finding your centers ("OOOOHHHMMM"...yoga chant [:)] ) is to know WHICH extended Maxx Chassis you have...Dynamite? XTM? Hardcore? Then you'll be able to find centers for the right version. UE make the best, and they REALLY only cost a tiny bit more $$ than MIPs or XTM/Dynamite (LESS than those???!!! Ti centers are $40 a pair!!!! [X(][X(] ) ....lookee here: http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/cgi-bin/store/scan/co=yes/fi=products/sf=category/se=Driveshaft/sf=spare/se=0/op=eq/tf=category/tf=sku.html?id=7pCDFJpV&open= Dean

RE: Lookin 4 a hobby shop that can ship a revo to me in Africa...any ideas?
When Nigerians ASK for sensitive information (cred. card/soc. security/bank numbers)...RUN!!! But when they're offering to BUY something...when they GIVE information that can be verified, well, there's not much to worry about. That said...I have no idea how to help you!! You should try to find a dealer/distributor/store in one of the bigger African countries, i.e. South Africa Egypt..maybe even something in Europe. Maybe e-mail Traxxas & ask them where their stuff is sold nearest to you. I'm guessing there has to be SOMEBODY selling RC stuff...it's a friggen CONTINENT!!! Dean

RE: Are these any good.
Once you do sort out the link, I think my opinions gonna be the same as it is now...when I know SQUAT about these shocks. NO/MAYBE/WHO CARES? Bottom line...people came out w/tons of hopups for the Maxx to shore up weak points of the truck. Sure there are & will always be pure 'bling' accessories that appeal to some, but the Revo comes with GREAT shocks...GREAT bulks...a GREAT tranny...GREAT driveshafts....GOOD/GREAT diffs. People are dropping in .30 engines, and I have yet to hear about shredded tranny gears, driveshafts or diffs (there were some early diff problems, but I dunno if they're still an issue or not). They basically improved EVERY weak 'section' of the Maxx, so there's nothing that's really needed outta the box. Sure..rockers, RPM arms, alum/ti pushrods & 'buckles. skids & new engines are important options to have available. But unlike the Maxx (and many other trucks), there are NO glaring weak spots that need attention to have a functional truck...even if you put in a big block!! Dean

RE: Keeping the wheels on
USUALLY...when you lose nuts & are using locknuts (stock/aftermarket...the things w/ a bit 'o plastic in 'em), it means you've stripped the wheel and/or the hex. All the nut does is hold the wheel onto the hex...if the hex & wheel aren't damaged, rotational forces will NOT affect the nut whatsoever....it's not holding the wheel on the axle!! But if you're hex is slightly rounded, or if the 'female' hex in the wheel is rounded , that means the hex is spinning within the wheel & your nut comes off. This can happen if the hex isn't fully seated when you tighten the nut (maybe some dirt's in the wheel preventing full-seating), or if the nut wasn't cranked down fully if/when the hexes DO mesh properly. You really have to take the hex off and put it in the wheel to see if there's slop. Sometimes it's super-obvious that the wheel stripped, but sometimes each part wears a bit & you can't tell just by looking at them..you have to check the fit! Whatever the case, if you have stock nuts that haven't been taken on/off a zillion times, this IS your problem!! You can fix this by permanently gluing (JB WELD!!) the hex into the wheel...or, of course, replace the hex and/or the wheel. Metal hexes certainly stop some of this, as sometimes it's a case where the hex wears a LITTLE and the wheel wears a LITTLE and they combine to form enough slop to allow the hex to rotate. But metal hexes also are sharp & can help 'carve' the wheel...but that's usually w/high-power big-blocks. Dean BTW...it goes without saying (but I'll say it anyways!!) that if you didn't notice that the pin had somehow fallen out, it's absence will make the nut come off in a heartbeat!!

RE: Yikes these are $$$$- T-Maxx_
UE make the best diffs, period! It's not just the cases...EVERYTHING is different. They're basically OFNA 1/8 scale buggy gears inside, but customized to UEs specs. The gears only work in the UE housings, though, and they're sealed so you can use silicone. But considering the housings are 7075 alum., and you get everything...well, they're STILL a lot of $$$ [:D] Take a look at what you're getting...we're not talkin' a couple 'o gears (and the explanation will interest you too) http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/cgi-bin/store/13540.html Note that these diffs affect your overall gearing....you need to tweak your spur/clutchbell gearing to keep things the way you want. BUT...that ebay price is WAAY too high...they're 'only' $220 brand new!! If you're serious, check out the UE FORUM'S buy/sell/trade board...you can find much better deals!! Lotsa Supermaxxers started out w/'regular' UE systems & have since gone to their VBS 'bulkless' setup, so they sell off their old stuff. You'll also see a lot of general 'partouts'...that's where you see most of the diffs. You might need to register to access it/post, but it's a great place... http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=23 Dean

RE: Feelings on alumunum parts
I'm a Maxxer, but in general, 6065 alum. SUCKS for just about everything. 7075 IS very good, but very few mfgs. are working with it (UE, ANC. Dace), and I don't know of ANY Revo parts in that stuff. But Hardcore makes a pretty fair amount of titanium Revo parts, and of course, that kicks alum's metallic arse!! Thier one-piece/full length skid looks like it'd be the best on the market, and they have bumpers, rockers & other stuff you might wanna look at. http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0006p.pgm?T=4&I=TRAC71** Dean

RE: Need a new radio
Remember...the DX2 that comes w/the Mayhem is a TWO channel version of the DX3 that is sold on it's own. Dunno if you have any need for a 3rd channel, but keep that in mind if you think you might. Dean
