RE: Goldberg Extra 300
Ok, This Extra 300 I'm rebuilding seems very-(pause for a breath)-light.

RE: Goldberg Extra 300
This thread is just what I was looking for as I'm rebuilding a CG Extra. A good friend, since passed on put me in charge of disolving his airplane collection last May, the Extra was one of the many he had. It was built fairly decent and flown, but suffered some damage from a sudden return to Mother Earth ( my guess). Nothing real serious, so after looking at it for almost a year I decided to bring it back in it's full glory, totally redoing the entire plane. The lightness and seemingly fragility of the airframe is apparent, but I'm leaving it as it was built. I'm not sure what was on it for power, but a new Saito 1.20 is hanging from the firewall now. A severe "twist" has been removed from the right wing, and it's just about ready for covering. A good friend (that had one of these) still had a couple of pieces I could use, a nice glass gear and the canopy, two items I quickly put to use.[:D] I'm covering it in red, white and blue Monokote, the fuselage is all done. I plan to name it BOAZ, I think Bob would like that. I'll post some pics when we "maiden" it coming soon, that's if my shop plans go as I'm hoping.[;)]

RE: RE:
Al, it has to be two years, the Multi Fly wasn't a go last year, but we were there the year before with the 310, but we don't remember seeing you there. I can't remember your excuses either, oh well, maybe the next time we meet you'll remind me. It was so many, how could I remember them all anyway, huh?

RE: RE:
OK, I have to share my story, it involves a full scale 310 also. It was the "maiden" flight for my Nosen 310, over 30 years ago at the Monticello airport. We had just made a first flight, left the gear down, and everything went just fine. We refueled , took off, and the second flight we checked the retracts out, again, everything went just fine. We noticed a full scale aircraft coming into the circuit, we landed and waited to see what they were going to do. Gear down, flaps down, on aproach, here comes this beautiful Cessna 310. The gal in the left seat smiled and waved, hit the throttles and was gone. It was a good day for the 310, and we never did know who that was. It sure made my day special for the first flight of my Nosen 310, and how often would something like that happen? Oh, the personal aircraft of that airport's manager was..............yup, a Cessna 310.

RE: RE:
Flyboy.15, My Nosen weighs in at about 38 pounds, glassed, painted, retracts. It flies fine on a pair of Saito 1.20's. I'm using Graupner , Super Extra 14/7 three bladed props. I replaced the two, older O.S. 1.20's with the Saitos two years ago, it flew fine with the old O.S. also, using the same props. Watching the overall weight, it sounds like you're set in the power department. Myself, I would prefer a single cylinder for a twin application, but they do sound nice and are powerful.

Thisstrangeengine, looking good, and it won't take long before it'll be something that will take up the entire dining room table.[:D][:D] Seeing the new plans makes me wonder if my old plans from 30 years ago are much different. I don't remember having any changes I had to make when I built mine, but that was a few moons back and my mental retention is lacking.[:o]

RE: RE:
SJ3CUB ,the plans for mine were pretty basic in that area, the top of the cabin can look like it's just stuck onto some of the side pieces if a little extra time isn't spent. I spent a lot of extra time with the windshield area and side windows and it's probably not close to scale, but definitely better than the original stock build. Remember, this was a similarity to and not a scale kit of a 310. Not that the original wasn't a good design,it is, but many of the 310's built since have mass improvements to the basic design. When I built mine 30 years ago I wasn't thinking scale, just trying to class it up a bit.

Al, why don't you be nice to an "old fart" like me? I have a picture program that made it super easy as soon as I found the size that was necessary to post. No, I'm smarter than my grandkids....well, I can't say that my one granddaughter is in her third year of college at U K and was a 4.0 ever since she started grade school. She might be smarter than me, but not about airplanes, that makes me smarter than her. [:D] [:D] [:'(]

RE: RE:
Cliff, congrats, you'll enjoy the build, even though it is lengthly, but well worth the effort. The final outcome is a delight to enjoy everytime you look at it, especially up in the air. The pictures will surely be enjoyed on this end right from opening the box on. I've got one project to do to mine this year, I'm going to change the receiver over to a new 2.4ghz system. Having the Futaba 10-C gives me a lot of mixing I didn't have before. Flap/elevator mix and elevator/ brake mix are two I'll use for sure. Don't forget to post those pics, we'll enjoy them. Jim

RE: RE:
Thisstrangeengine, I like the Bobcat, I wouldn't mind bumping that plan up in size a few notches and build a bigger one, like say for two .91 Saitos. I do have a Giant Bobcat twin, an old twin trainer, it was a Bradford kit which later changed hands and company name. It's an excellent flier at 97" w.s. and very good one engine out performance. I can't think of the full scale your Bobcat resembles, but I'd like to build one.

RE: RE:
Thisstrangeengine, Thanks, it does help to have a visual of what that big box of wood might someday look like. Seems like ya build and build and build some more just to start building again, it is a big project. Mine is 30 years old and it took me about two years of fairly steady building to complete it. Basically, it was the main build and the glassing one year and the final finish and paint the next. I did buy another one that was "crudely" built for the Robart nose gear, so I have an ugly up overhead in the garage that maybe someday I'll get into flight condition. Pictures are too scarey to even post of that one.[X(] Al aka The Handyman will surely comment on my comments. LOL Good luck on your project, it'll come together and be well worth all that's invested. I'm not sure if there ever was a Nosen 310 build blog 30 years ago, but I didn't know of one to visit back when I built mine, so you have the advantage of all the other's inputs. Be sure to take pics all through the build, that's one thing I did, many don't realize what it had to look like before it became a beautiful bird.

I was hoping to get the strobe lights flashing in one of the pics that day, never did, they do look cool though. What I should do is take some pics of that other one and post them, that'd make mine look like a real beauty. LOL I'd have to say it was one of your better ones and I bought it from you. I'm using two Saito 1.20 four strokes on mine, Graupner three blade props, plenty of power to cruise at half throttle , with reserve power left. My 310 weighs right at 38 pounds, retracts, brakes, glassed and painted.

Al, do you realize how difficult it is to work with one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peeling? You should feel sorry for me andd let me have those 1.08's just because I'm a nice fella and always greet you so nicely.[:D][:D][:D][:D] It scares me to think of how much work there's still left in that 310 even though it's all built. I won't go as detailed as I did on my first one, but I'll still glass and paint it. Ya never know I might do that second 310 over getting the Sky Van flying, decisions, decisions.[&o] Stop around at the coming swap meet and we'll talk, I have a bunch of motors I'm going and try and sell for a widdow. Ya know anyone interested in a N.I.B. Irvine 1.20 ? Beautiful motor, but I found it's discontinued. Bob, a Skyhawk memeber just passed away in December 2011 and he asked me to take care of all of his RC stuff back in May of 2011. He was consumed with cancer, but lasted longer than we thought he would. I'm buying several of his planes myself just for memories. I hope to have a good report for his wife after the swap meet. I'm planning on going as I ordered two tables prior to my recent shoulder surgery, so I'll be a cripple and you can take advantage of me.[;)][:D][:D]

Al, that's a great deal for those 1.08's and the props and spinners also. Hmm, I do have that ugly p.o.c. still up overhead in the garage, but it might be who knows how long before I do anything with it? If no-one takes them maybe you'll still have them if'n I ever decide to take that ugly p.o.c. down and get er' flyin'.[8|] Don't hold your breath, sell em', that'll make someone's 310 happy.[;)]

RE: RE:
Terry, your progress looks great, thanks for the pics. An idea you might try on the triangle balsa stock is to take a razor saw and make cut slits crosswise in the stock. Space the cuts apart at about a 1 " interval. Do a test piece and see how deep the cuts need to be and the space between cuts to get the desired bend you need. The cut slits can be filled in with filler later.

RE: RE:
Looking good Terry. Is it just an illusion or are my poor, tired, ol' eyes seeing right? In the first pic it looks like the top level of the main spars dip down at the center of the wing. On mine, the center section thickness at the spar is constant from center out to the outter side of each engine nacell, there the taper begins out towards the wing tips. The build board looks super.

RE:
BPS, jsparky hit most of the parameters that will effect the runway length needed for takeoff with the 310. I can tell you that mine weighs in at 38 pounds, and is powered by two Saito 1.20's with Graupner 14/7 three bladed props. Naturally, the runway surface plays a major roll in the length needed, but 200 to 250 feet sounds about right.
