RE: New Airspace Control Score Discussion
Judging seminars start soon... I would like to see some consistency between the regions. The whole "well, the rules are ambiguous so I am going to judge it like this" aint gonna cut it in the long run. It will end up like the presentation score and die an agonizing death. I agree with what someone said earlier, if you judge it per manuever, you end up with double jeopardy. I interpret the rule as saying you need to judge it based in the way the entire pattern is flown. For instance, lets say you put that humpty this side of the far end of the box, and the next 3 manuevers are askew because the whole pattern would have flown better had the humpty been at the far end... the next three manuevers are now flown at the optimal position for judging based on the now skewed pattern - how do you downgrade that? Its going to be judges interpretation, and like Dean said, as long as the best pilot gets the best score it wont matter too much. I worry with this kind of rule, however, that there will be inconsistency from region to region based on how each region interprets it and teaches at thier judging seminar. Going to lead to some arguments at inter-region contests for sure - arguments are not good for membership, and if an ambiguous inconsistent rule cost you a contest... well....

RE: Rudder Pull-Pull on 80" H9 Cap 232 Question?
Thats the old Nelson cable attach fitting. The first two pictures look correct, run the cable through then make a small loop instead of a knot, the loop will be larger than the small hole in the front. Pull the loop back into the fitting. There should be a 4-40 bolt that goes in and jams the loop up against the front of the fitting - The cable will not come out of the hole. Place your clevis or ball link (4-40 size) just like any other 4-40 bolt. Roger

RE: Powerbox-type DPSI Iso thingy Hype?
Simply put: 1. Short circuit protection. If a servo goes bust or a wire gets crimped, its nice to know it wont cost you the airplane. 2. Cleans up dual battery installations. Provides dual battery redundancy to a single reciever setup. 3. In the case of the DPSI Twin (Emcotec), provides true receiver redundancy over all channels. 4. Provides low voltage warning (both audible and visible depending on brand) 5. Amplifies and filters rx signal. (good for multiple long servo leads) 6. Provides multiple outputs per channel and servo matching without the need for additional wyes/matchboxes. Summary. Useful in a 40%. Questionable usefuleness in 35%, but some gain to be had. Useless in aircraft smaller than 33%. Cost is about the same as a second receiver - certainly not as expensive as "another aircraft". Roger

RE: 2006 Sequences?
ORIGINAL: Diablo-RCU If IMAC participation is down, there are more than a few reasons why. Extraordinary gasoline prices last Summer made traveling to a contest very expensive. If you're hauling a trailer for a 40% plane or two, even more expensive. A tank of gas for a 40% plane costs about $2. It's about the same cost as flying something with a Moki 2.10.
The trailering I'll buy into. $2 for a 40% tank of gas - thats an exaggeration. Even worse comparing $2.50-$3.00/gal pump gas to $10.00-$18.00/gal alcohol/nitro. C'mon man, when you exaggerate that bad you lose credibility. Now to your point: IMAC participation was not down. However, most people just went to one contest. I personally only made 3 last year, biggest reason I didnt make more is the time factor involved. It hurts to leave work on friday, hook up and drive all night, get up early to fly on Saturday, have a small amount of fun while sweating and studying unknowns sat night, fly a little on sunday, smile and clap then haul butt home so you can be dog dead tired at work monday morning, wondering how bad your wife is going to yell at you about not mowing the grass! And this is when it goes smooth. I know there are folks here who have gotten up to really bad weather on saturday after driving all night and asked yourself the question - "Is it really worth it?" Size matters. Nobody can truely argue that small airplanes are competetive. If you are serious about IMAC, you will have to get a big airplane eventually if you want to be competetive. Dick I agree with everything you say, but the reality is the general majority of the membership really does not want to change the format. And I understand to a degree because IMAC was founded on that principle that there would be no restrictions on the aircraft size. As long as folks continue to show up to enough contests, there will be no format change. Here in South Central, the trend has been more and bigger contests. The good news is Pattern offers a format with size restrictions - Interestingly, the cost is very similar when you get to the upper more competetive classes - hmm. Roger

RE: Cannister Installation for Radio Craft 43% ?
I dont have pictures of mine, but its very straight forward. Call DA, they know the exact drop you need on the headers. They also sell the plywood cannister mounts, makes it really easy. There should be a hole already in the firewall under the motor mount. Put the headers on, fit the cannisters into the ply mount, then mark the placement and glue it in. Then all you have to do is seal up the back of the motor box behind the wing tube (I used light ply), and cut some exit holes on the bottom of the fuse for cooling. Roger

RE: DA-150 w/ std muffler owners: how to?
Hey Ryan. JB Weld will hold up to the temp, but it doesnt last very long - I've tried it, worked great for about ten runs then it started to crack and break off. Are you trying to use it to fix the damage? if so, consider silver solder, its pretty easy to use and it <will> hold up. I've been using high temp silicone RTV instead of a gasket - the ultra copper mentioned earlier works just as well - and High Temp Red loctite (there is a separate strong hold red loctite) - you'll find it at any auto parts store, its for header bolts and exhausts. This is the same setup I use on my car - I've never had an issue on either the car or the airplane. You do have to torch the bolts to get them out tho, the hi temp red holds just as strong as the hi strength red loctite. Good luck man. Roger Edit: Hey man I just looked at Katrina's track... If you need to evac, we got room for you here. Y'all be careful out there, I hope this one is all hype.

I've got about 10 gallons through mine now - piped. Never had a deadstick, engine runs flawlessly. One ignition problem early in life was solved quickly and professionally by the fine folks at RCS. Dont have any first hand numbers on the MVVS to compare, but I can say my Roto 25 is pulling 8800 rpm static on a Mezjlik 18x8 on a KS pipe, 1200ft MSL, 93 degrees F - verified by an optical tach and the tattle tale tach off the ignition. RE: Initiating Spin Entry
ORIGINAL: aresti2004
ORIGINAL: chipwill IMAC rules state that the nose must drop before rotation starts. Some planes will do this on their own while others like straight wing Edges hang on forever.
This is not correct. The IMAC rules actually say that the wing must fall in the direction of the intended rotation AS THE NOSE falls. So to say that the nose must fall first is not correct. Ideally it is simultaneous. In fact, if the nose falls prior to the rotation starting that is a downgrade for a forced entry (1 point per 10 degrees). Please see page F&JG-42 for the discussion of this in the rules.
The often misinterpreted judging quick reference states automatic zero when: Spins - No visible stall, or snap / barrel-roll entry. Most people equate a "visible stall" as the nose falling, when instead they should be looking for a break when the nose and wing fall together. On aircraft with a light wing loading and a high idle, the nose will not fall much - add a slightly aft CG and its zero city. Very hard to interpret from the judging chair. ...dont ask me how I know. RE: Has anyone received their Evolution 26GT gasser yet ?
ORIGINAL: RysiuM Sorry, can't confirm that. You may be right - I can't argue. That's what I've been told by all manuals, safety recommendation and common knowledge at my field. I've seen twice Saito 30 breaking the nylon mount - just where the screws go through. I wouldn't like to see that on the engine 5 times bigger. 4-stroke and gassers can shake a lot (I read that actually SAITO 150 vibrates more than most small gassers). I wouldn't risk my life just for 2-3 oz and few bucks.
They make large nylon mounts specifically for this size engine. All the manuals I've read say to use a mount for the size engine and seldom specify what they should be made of. I've been using them for years, and I still have both hands and my life. I've never had one crack, but I could agree if not drilled or installed properly they can be weakened. Even still, if Nylon bothers you, there are many ways to mount safely at weights less than 8 oz. <snip> You and others have expressed interest to stay on track so I will. <snip>
Wow, 1/2 of 8 oz it is 4 oz - not bad. That's for header + pipe? I may look around for that. I was looking at the MVVS site estimating the weight (3265 = 95g, 3266 = 207g) total 312g = 11.4oz. Adding pipe bracket it will go over 12 oz, where Pits muffler is 5 oz. RysiuM
KS 1015 pipe is 160g. Mount and header another 50g. 210g overall, or 7.413oz. Probably the best bang for the buck out there roughly $150 all up. Ed Skorpas pipe is 90g, plus 50g for header and mount 140g, 0r 4.942oz. Best weight savings, but a premium cost - roughly $280 all up. In the big scheme of things the extra 2 oz is more than made up for in power, and more of the weight is distrubuted aft where you need it. Certainly shouldnt be overlooked if the model will allow for a clean mount. Roger

RE: Has anyone received their Evolution 26GT gasser yet ?
I think Rudeboy is a little more realistic... follow me
ORIGINAL: RysiuM Sorry Rudeboy for the confusion. I did this math long time ago before I made a difficult decision between Saito and MVVS. It is now so abvious for me, that I didn't explain properly. ORIGINAL: Rudeboy Why does a Saito 150 need an 8 oz mount? Are you using mild steel beam mounts or something? Any big 2lb or more engine needs strong mount. Cheap nylon stuff will not hold long. I looked at Tower at any solid mount like Dubro shock absorbing (over 8oz) or Great Planes for 1.2 -1.8 (7 oz). Other don't show the weight but if it's less than that it is probably not strong enough.
"cheap nylon stuff" holds just fine, or you can build your own hardwood mount and still be far less than 8 oz.
ORIGINAL: Rudeboy Why does a Saito 150 need a 22 oz tank for 15 minutes...? Again it is from Saito information website stating a little less than 2 oz per minute WOT. I assumed 75% of that adding 2-4 oz for the fuel tank alone. My 11 oz tank weights 12 oz. ORIGINAL: Rudeboy Are you running 40% nitro through it in a pylon racer at WOT all the time? Mine does perfectly fine on a 14 oz tank for an aerobatic flight routine (10% fuel)... From RCFAQ database where SAITO 150 turns 17 inch prop at 8600 rpm, you need full throttle a lot flying 3D with 11.5 lb plane. I know, because I fly it with 18 inch prop and it needs over 8k rpm to pull out of hover.
a 17x?? a 17x10, a 17x12? You're turning an 18x ?? 6? 8? and getting what 8000, maybe 8500 RPM? Pitch makes a difference. Show me the video of your MVVS pulling your 11.5lb plane out of a hover, I think you might be exaggerating a tad.
ORIGINAL: Rudeboy The installed weight of an MVVS 1.6 is definitely more than that of a Saito 150... it may not be much more depending on the tanks and batteries you use, but it will be more. The great benefit of MVVS is that I can have small fuel tank at CG far away from the engine. On Saito unless you install fuel pump the tank should be close to the engine. And because the tank is big it changes the total weight and the ballancing of the plane during the flight. Kind of PITA. ORIGINAL: Rudeboy Now, the MVVS on a tuned pipe is a different thing: it really comes to life on a pipe, and becomes a hell of a lot stronger than that Saito 150... on a pipe it turns 18" props with ease, while a 17x8 is about as far as you can go with the Saito in any case. I didn't go with tuned pipe because the pipe is 8 oz heavier than the can muffler. I wanted to be lighter than more powerfull. I hope this explains and clears the confusion. RysiuM
Here I think both of you are a little misinformed. First, even on a pipe, I think the MVVS might actually come close to the performance of a Saito 150, but I dont think exceed. If you think turning an 18x8 at 9000 rpm is a lot of power think again. Thats a hover prop, with no bite, so for good pull out it needs to be in the 11-12000 range. The gassers just cant do it. What does the Saito turn that 17x8 at? oh yeah, 11000 rpm.... put them on the same airplane, and the glow will outperform the gas by a wide margin 100% of the time. Lets not exaggerate that, I hate for people to take the small gas engines home expecting the world and getting really pissed they dont get the performance they "read in the internet". Next on the tuned pipe weight... The KS 1015 pipe with a custom header weighs in at 8 oz total! and the Ed Skorpa CF pipes are about 1/2 that.... Roger

RE: Roto, Zenoh, MVVS or Saito ??
Larry, I'm running a ROTO 25 with a KS pipe in a Precision Models Extra. Its turning a mezjlik 18x8 at 8800 rpm static. The airframe came in at a whopping 8 pounds, and the engine weighs 3 pounds with ignition and battery (LiPo!). 11lbs AUW. Its capable some minor 3D, and it will fly up to the advanced IMAC pattern, no way unlimited, the vertical peters out too much. Its a little peaky, and as it breaks in the mid range has started to deteriorate, but not so much I dont think I can fix it with a different prop or some carb adjustments. Its definately <not> a single rpm engine. Its very smooth, and the response is not different than with a standard muffler. Ive never run it witout the pipe, but most reports say it will turn a 16X12 in the 8000 rpm range. The engine is very smooth, and I'm very happy with it, however I didnt buy it looking for near glow performance, I bought it knowing it would be less capable than a glow engine, built the airframe with the added weight in the nose in mind, and I got exactly what I wanted. That said, some of these small engines can turn the prop close to or equal to the numbers you get on a glow engine, but <none> in this size exceed the capability of the glow engine. The disappointment is in the weight - typically a gas engine is about a pound to 2 pounds heavier than the glow. Doesnt sound like much, but in this size aircraft the performance hit is enormous. For the combination to work for aerobatics, the AUW cannot exceed 11lbs. For 3D, 9lbs is the upper limit. With 3-4 lbs in the engine, you can see the implication - its not easy to do. My hat is off to Dick Hanson who has achieved this with a phenomenal wing loading to boot. The Cunningham Z comes in within an ounce or 2 of all the others (make sure you are comparing apples to apples, ignition and muffler weight are added to some advertisements, and left out of others), cost less, will turn the best rpm, and is going to be the least hassle to install. Hope this helps, Roger

RE: Emcotec or Powerbox?
ORIGINAL: aresti2004
ORIGINAL: epc and on my 40% I use dual Rx.
This being the case then there is only one product makes sense. The Emcotec DPSI Twin. Your two receivers will be TOTALLY redundant. One will act as primary and the other is the backup. If the primary dies the other takes over with FULL control of ALL servos. Not this half a plane silliness. The really cool part is that for absolute true total redundancy you can have the second RX on a DIFFERENT channel. Keep an extra TX at your feet ready to go on that channel and programmed for that plane and you will FINALLY have true redundancy.
Ditto. If you are running dual receivers, you are wasting money that would be better spent on cable ties. There is no value added unless you use the DPSI Twin.. Think about it. Roger
