RE: Mibo A-10 fans flight tested
ORIGINAL: STAN-CAUSSEL Hello Wayne These fans look great , like real double flux hi-rate engine. I wonder how is buiding this fan? I don't mean the axle but the fan itself. Is it molded , is it metalic? What is the weight and how does the structure react to gyroscopic effects ? Will it be next a detail4scale option ? Could wayne give us a flight report of the use of decelerons ? Best regards Stan
Stan, I didn't have anything to do with the fans, they are Wayne Layne's handy work (making them functional that is) As for the decelerons, Bob Levine flew his A-10 last week with the decelerons and they functioned perfectly. No in flight issues what so ever.[:D] BRG, Dan

RE: OH Sh#*%$$t!!!
Hey Dave, I was there that day at El Toro. The pilot was performing a square loop and came up short on power at the bottom. Everyone couldn't believe that the F-18 didn't just explode! The crash crews did a fantastic job. I recall the pilot spent about 6 weeks in the hospital. Too bad too, it's was an awesome airshow that day! I can't recall what year it was, but I still have the pictures from that day. Dan
ORIGINAL: KC36330
ORIGINAL: blighty many moons ago we used to use low fuel warning lights on helicopters where it was hard to see the fuel tank. what you had was an ultra bright LED mounted on the heli as a nav light. there was 2 screws that went either side of you fuel tank about 1/4 of the way up. when the fuel got below the screws, the contact was broken and the LED would come on. don't know if you can still get them, but I'm sure some one could work out how to make them........... and no the fuel tanks didn't leak.
you'd be getting the light constantly as fuel moved about the tank, inverted would give a light at 3/4 tank. IIRC the Dan Gills setup was working around a light source and it was calibrated to how much light the fuel filtered out, i just don't see this being a practical (and consistently functional) way of doing it, the voltage of the fuel pump v/s time is about the only reliable way IMO.
Just to clarify that our fuel monitoring system uses hall effect sensors and not light to measure the fuel levels. Accuracy levels can reach 1oz or so once the unit has been programmed to work in the tank the unit is installed. A 900 MHZ telemetry system provides fuel level updates every 5 seconds. Bench testing has been completed and the unit will be forthcoming soon. Dan

OK so I rounded up to 1:6.9...lol. I say that's close enough. David, if this above is the case, I won't have to change any of the chute parts. It sounds like a very close match size wise. Dan

I remember the scale for the BVM F-100 to be around 1:6.9 scale. I guess it depends what 3-views were used. Either way the FEJ F-100F
ORIGINAL: P38J Thanks Dan, I glad you’re doing it because I don't think I'd want to take on making molds for all three pieces. Now with that being said, Get'er done.[:D] no rest for the talented.
Wayne, I wish it was only just the 3 pieces. The trim tabs are separate now too. When I split the ailerons into decelerons, the tirm tab had to separate since it goes with the top deceleron half. The molds were not fun for these, so I know what you're saying now about not wanting to do them. Oh, well, I should be done early next week. Dan

RE: 4th gen A-10 by Mibo jets
ORIGINAL: f16jc Dan is that something new, what is the LGB, and what trim tabs
Joe, Jon answered one of the questions. The trim tabs are molded in the up position on the decelerons that come from Mibo. When the decelerons split, the trim tab stays with the top part of the deceleron, so it had to be a separate piece for the pair. I have take about 6 weeks to make the tooling for the molded decelerons and mechanics for them. I was surprized at just how complicated such a simple looking unit could be. I should have them completed next week so you'll get a chance to see what I mean when the first pair is assembled. Dan
ORIGINAL: F106A The problem making the canopy operation scale is the square panel mounted on the fuse right behind the canopy. On the real plane, as the canopy opens, it moves rearward and then opens and the door raises and moves aft with the canopy. All the pictures I've seen of models do not have the panel, it's just part of the rear canopy. Also, the canopy is raised/lowered

RE: 1/6th A-6 Intruder Scratch Build
Ian, The Gorilla glue is the best option I've found for laminating the foam in place. Just be sure to keep the G glue at least 1" from the outer edge of the formers when gluing the foam in place. It expands a whole bunch and it's better not to have it anywhere near the outer edges of the formers after it cures. Wipe any glue the runs out with a disposable rag before it dries. The other issue with Gorilla glue is toxicity. Hot wiring the Gorilla glue can get you really sick from the isocyanate fumes. (cyanide) Very bad for the lungs!. The foam really only has to be stuck in place until you can hot wire the major chunks from the outside anyway, so it doesn't take that much glue. After hot wiring, you can fill the cracks with the Gorilla glue and final sand to shape. Use Fixall for the skim filler before fiberglassing. It dries 10X faster than drywall mud and won't flake off. Just be sure there are no globs or it can be "FUN" to sand off. Otherwise, It sands about the same as the drywall mud. Great looking project. The A-6 is a classic airframe! BRG, Dan

RE: 1/6th A-6 Intruder Scratch Build
Hi Ian, Just sent you a PM. The wire is on it's way via priority mail. I have tried every type of wire there is and nothing performs like the Inconel. At .020 it cuts so clean and doesn't stretch like other wire. Most of the cutting wire sold by companies is not good as it heats, it stretches causing dips in the cuts; especially over long distances. If you use a Variac for the power supply, the results are hard to beat! Oliver, Just sent you a PM as well. BRG, Dan

Hey Ian, I have a 1/4lb. spool of .020 Inconel foam cutting wire. Pretty much the best foam cutting wire available...How much do you need? I can send you some tomorrow. This stuff is awesome. No matter how hot it gets, it doesn't stretch like nichrome wire does. Best of luck on the A-6. It looks like a great project. Dan
