RE: .010 out of mothballs.. ahh sweet music!
ORIGINAL: SnApRoLl-
ORIGINAL: MJD Rooting around in my 1/2A and smaller drawer a couple of days ago, I pulled out an .010 that was buried under various .049's and junk, all gummed up and dusty, wouldn't turn over. Tsk tsk. After chewing myself out for being such a slob with such a precious little engine, I proceeded to tear it down completely. All metal parts started with an overnight soak in lacquer thinners. Brushing and wiping removed all the gummy oil residue. The plastic parts were swished out in a small jar of methanol. Everything blown out and wiped clean. Oiled it up, reassembled, new piece of silicone over the needle valve, and a new fuel line from some nice small diameter silicone I bought from Texas Timers (for FF pinch offs). Moment of truth this morning.. wife's awake, time to fire it up in the basement. Oh yeah.. ^%$%$.. remembered my glow panel burned out late last year and all I have is a single cell NiCad starter. 1.2V don't work worth beans on Cox plugs. Hmm.. what to do. Aha! Great idea! (uh oh) I made up a clip to attach to my Hitec charger (120V input) and set it to NiCad charge, set to 2 amps..''start''.. cool, working, not hot enough. Ramp it up to 2.5A, looking good! Nice red/orange, not too much. The macho way to test run an .010 is to hold it between thumb and forefinger of course. 5 turns out. Fueled it up with some 1/2A brew (25% nitro, 23% oil), a small suck on the intake to draw it up the line to the venturi, a tiny drop in the exhaust, flip it a couple of times to limber up. Power on the plug.. brpp.. brrp.. yeehah! I was pleased/surprised with a 3 flip start. Whee, ran fat and rich with plug heat for a while, then nudged it into a rich 2 cycle (boy the exhaust glow is bright..?), clip off, ran out the tank. Wiped my left hand clean, let's do it again! Hmm, the plug is dead? Then it dawned on me.. the possible folly of connecting the plug to a current versus voltage regulated source. At least that's what I think took the plug out - as the element heated (which should result in increased resistance and less current flow) the charger faithfully kept the current at 2.5A. Oh well. I have a respectable collection of new plugs, thanks to scoring a handful at a swap meet some years ago. It was just so satisfying to see and hear it spring back to life, and especially to know I hadn't ruined the poor thing with neglect. Phew! No more battery charger starts though.
Glad to hear you got your old .010 running again. It's always cool to hear success stories. I have a Tee Dee .010 as well but I just cannot bring my self to run it as it is still new in box. As far as burning out glow plugs go, don;t feel bad. I did the same thing with my Medallion .09 r/c except, I connected my glow igniter to my 12v starter input on my power panel. [:o] Luckily, I was able to get a new glow head from coxengines.ca and now she runs like a champ. Shawn
That's kinda sad because the .010's run really well and make a LOT of power for their size... Been flying a lot of .010 powered sport racers over the last few years in particular and every flight you know you are doing something special. The TD .020 is probably the best engine Cox ever made, the .010 is a close second. How they went so wrong with the TD .049, I don't know.. Run that sucker, you can't take it with you to the grave!

RE: MPjet 061D aircraft
ORIGINAL: ffkiwi
ORIGINAL: AMB Chris, think I will pick up an other one while still avaliable, doing a shuffle with my engines have a new Saito 91 in box still wrapped, will never use it so will sell it off martin POST NOTE wonder if any spinner nuts for these ??
Martin I know there is a spinner for the Classic, because David Owen sells it as an accessory-but that has a 3mm thread, the 061 has a 4mm shaft thread........I don't think I've ever seen an OEM spinner for the 061 (but that doesn't necessarily mean MP Jet didn't make them..........) I remember I made my own back in the mid 90's. Now you could get a TT07 spinner nut ($4.49 from Tower) which IIRC is 3.5mm thread and retap the hole, or buy a spinner nut from TruTurn in the 4mmx0.7mm thread for about twice that..........and they have several styles available in that thread. ChrisM 'ffkiwi'
MP Jet offers both a factory spinner nut (pointy with hole for tightening AND a 30mm aluminum spinner. You guys might also look into the "marine" exhaust extension (it pushes the muffler out 3/8" or so), spare needles, con rods, throttle arms, pressure backplates, and motor mounts. I don't know about Carlson's, but I have had fantastic service on MP Jet parts thru David Owen. Given how good these engines are, if you buy one and run it you'll definitely want to fly it-given how the engine seems to come and go every 15 years, spares are a really good idea.

RE: MPjet 061D aircraft
ORIGINAL: steve111
ORIGINAL: ffkiwi Well for a start you can't do a side by side comparison-you have to prop the glow appropriately for its peak power band-which is about 25,000rpm (and higher-27,000- still for the F1J Special variant)-considerably higher than the diesel which tops out by about 21,000. Of course the diesel will out-turn the glow lower down on bigger props. ChrisM 'ffkiwi'
Chris, I think it goes without saying that you'd prop them appropriately. Thing is, the current 061 glow has a recommended rev range of 14000-20000, and suggested prop range of 6-3 to 7-3. Recommended break-in prop is 7x3.5. Not at all the Norvel-type screamer I would've expected, and perhaps the specs have changed since they were last in production. I'm sure you could still stick a tiny prop on it and have it doing 25000+, but it goes against the maker's recommendations, and 17000 with a 7x3 is more use to me in the real world anyway. Steve
The low end on these Mp Jet .061D's seems to be about 5-5, which they will turn in the 20-21k range. Very useful....[>:]

I was thinking about using one of the older Enya .11CX's with the AAC liner for the project. I've had it for 13-14 years, it needs to find a home and a Chips might be perfect for it. When you say 'short kit', do you mean an Feebay deal or something?

I've always liked the way this one looks, thinking about buying the plans.... Did it fly well? Was it powered well with a .10 sized engine or did it 'need' a .15?

RE: landing a voodoo
ORIGINAL: chrisfox Anyone flying a voodoo need some input on landing set up spoilerons or flapperons? Which is better and why? How much to use? Thanks any help would be appreciated
I test flew the Voodoo for a guy last year and found it landed fine with a 3s/Neu setup with no flap mixing. It's a pylon racer, not a telemaster-you probably won't notice a lot of difference with the flaps mixed in.... the other thing was that I found the airplane to be extremely sensitive to elevator input, not sure I would want flap mixing at all. As far as I was concerned all the airplane needed was to cut the elevator throws to about 1/3 of what it had and it would have been ready to race. More than that would have probably snapped hard.

RE: Norvel .074 on a tuned pipe
ORIGINAL: combatpigg What size engine are these..? I read somewhere that pipe material / wall thickness has an effect on how the pipe operates. The only materials practical for tiny model planes have to be the lightest ones that will do the job. The .061 G&Z pipe is unbelievably thin and light. It actually threads together at the fattest portion.
IIRC, they are 150cc.

RE: Norvel .074 on a tuned pipe
I don't know that I would be too proud in calling a Harley motor more manly than a 250.... That 250 probably made just as much or near the same hp..... maybe 20hp more if it were a later water cooled model as TZ250's and RS250s were making 80-90hp. A real bike makes better than 160hp and is faster than your Harley in first gear.[>:] God, I love me some superbikes... my current fast bike is a GSXR1000 with a few goodies on it and traction control. It's making 177 at the wheel and doesn't wake the dead going from bar to bar.[:D] Oh, and just to keep this model related, if you could scale a Cyclon .061 to 1000cc's, it would make 7,000 hp.

RE: A-10 Plans?
One of the first EDFs I ever saw was one of these 1/2A A-10's. It didn't have a lot of power (this would have been in 1998 or so) but it seemed like a friendly airplane. I still have my plans, but when this thread popped up I checked the MAN plans store and panicked... There are a number of plans I don't have yet that I wanted: BeeTween, Chips, 1/2A FanTrainer etc.. Don't know what I am going to do now.[:o]

RE: Diesel in the USA
The current offerings in Diesels leaves something to be desired-I don't know any diesel truck owners who have been happy with the purchase long-term. My Dad bought a Dodge a few years ago that has a design flaw with the particulate filters-they don't tell you that you have to drive it for 45 minutes on the freeway to keep them from clogging every 15k. He traded for a Tacoma and is very happy. Another friend bought a Ford and made a bit of a stretch to get a diesel, had it 3 months and blew a head gasket. Several people I know have VW diesels-they don't seem too bad if you know what to look for and how to take care of them, but only one is happy with his car-the rest have been let down with transmission problems and niggling faults like power steering leaks. I'll happily have a diesel car once the manufacturers take them seriously.
ORIGINAL: combatpigg That combo should turn 17,000 stock. These engines are sometimes too tight and need a lot of running before loosening up to run right.
No kidding.... I've been running an .074 for a year and a half and am still 1k under what everyone says the prop and fuel should turn. Apparently they just up and decide to 'wake up' one day and pick up a bunch of power, can't wait. The 6.3-4 APC seems to be meant for this engine..

RE: Propellers for diesels. What do you like, and why?
I know my post will be largely ignored, but I look at diesel as a means to turn smaller props with more pitch than would be possible with a glow motor. Diameter has more effect on load than pitch does so dropping a little diameter in exchange for a lot of pitch can mean a lot for a cleaner model.

RE: Shaft driven props
ORIGINAL: nekked_man_2000 15 or 20 years ago I had a M.A.N. magazine and in the ''Small Steps'' article was a picture of a B-17, I believe it was built by Bob Kress. The caption said it had a belt drive to pull the 4 propellers with a single .049 T.D. (maybe .09) in the fuselage if I am not mistaken. Anybody else remember that? There was only one picture, if I remember right it showed the bottom of the B-17 with the T.D. head sticking out of the bottom of the fuse and virtually no other information. I hate when they tease like that, I want pictures and details. I also have another magazine somewhere with a C.L. P-39 powered by a .15 size boat motor that was water cooled, the model was complete with a home made radiator and cooling fan. It was mid engine with shaft drive to the prop. Austin
I remember that.... Don't remember the engine used, but IIRC, it used pulleys and long O-rings to transmit the power.
