Not as old as dirt yet, But I flew 2 years on B-36's ( the REAL THING ) and then 7 years on B-52's! I still fly RC 3-4 times a week .

RE: Getting back into the hobby
ORIGINAL: Mike Marnik one of my concerns is size. im trying to avoid anything large 40in is pushing it as i live in an apartment and dont have a ton of extra space.
I've got both the 3DHS 42" AJ Slick and the 40" Edge 540, and I really can't choose which I like best. I'de say you'de loe either of them. The Edge has a shorter fuselage, so it's a bit easier to throw in the car, but the Slick isn't bad. I've gopt a Nissan Altima and either will go in the back seat assembled. It's nice to drag them out of the car at the field and not have to work on them.
Also my head is spinning trying to figure out all the different specs and stuff on motors and trying to compare one to the other
. Welcome to the club. None of these manufacturers use any sort of standard for numbering motors, so you never know how one compares to the other. It's going to take you some time to learn about electrics, but for now fly a 3DHS plane and use whatever power system, battery and propeller they recommend. These planes are extensively tesed, so whatever they recommend works.
I dont need to get something for beginning 3d necesarily
You can sport fly any 3D plane just by reducing the throws and moving the CG forward a bit. We did that with a 40" Edge 540 and it as awesome. The nice thing is that if you get bored with spoort flying you chance the setupand the Edge is one of the most rocking 3D moinsters on the market......THE most rocking, IMHO. But, here we just sport fly it. You can snooparound the restof the blog and hoperfully you'llfind something that will help you. If you've got any questions, feel free to send me a PM. http://docaustinsfreakshow.blogspot.com/2009/04/40-edge-540-sport-report-and-set-up.html

RE: HS 5000 gyro problem/ ?
Thanks for the responses. They pointed me in the right direction and helped me get dialed in again. I did go over the mechanicals & had them pretty much set up right. It was the change to the DX7 that ws the problem. I had to go thru the entire new radio setup procedures to get it all straightened out. Once again 2 things become obvious. When all else fails, read the instructions & #2, I am the limiting factor in this heli's ability to fly. Thanks!!! Andy

RE: Trex 450 tail boom coming loose
That's an interesting problem. My Trex 450 SA has trouble with the tail boom coming loose in the plastic holder with the plastic connectors inside the block. I've upgraded to metal connectors in the plastic boom holder & it seems to have a better grip. of course that is with the braces on because I don't have it in one of the cool fusulages like you have. Very nice, BTW. I would think you could get a bolt from top to bottom in the boom block with a groove in each side of the block, BUT you are going to have to be sure it does not interfere with the way the belt goes thru that area. Let us know what you find out & end up doing to solve the problem. Have you gotten any advice from the folks in the scale forums? Andy

RE: Elan Has Arrived!
Hi, That's the problem Mike. 3 out of the 4, screwed in, were exactly the same length. The one I cut is the one that was longer. The final length on 3 of them is exactly 4 1/8". The final length on the one I cut is exactly 2.0". Do you think "shorty" is a little too short or is there enough meat to hold without worrying about it? Doc...[8|]

HS 5000 gyro problem/ ?
I have a new & unusual problem with my TRex 450. After having it evaluated at the hobby shop, they came up with the conclusion it is a bad gyro. Before I take it off & send it back for service, I would like to ask your advice & opinion. When I go to take off the heli spins left. After going all thru the trims and gains settings on a new DX7 that I just set up as my new radio, it is taking off better and staying straight on right rudder. Any left rudder, however goes full hard left - FAST -. Really not flyable, so I need to figure out what else I can do. Your help and advice will be appreciated. Andy

RE: Elan Has Arrived!
Hi Mike, Thanks for the advise on that. OK, so what you are saying, the booms can stay attached like on the Sprint and transported then once at the field, the wings can go on and lock everything in place. Is that about right? Good luck on your flights this weekend. Doc...

RE: Elan Has Arrived!
Hi Mike, Haven't seen any final pictures of your repair Job. Is it finished? Question. On the Elan, How are you attaching the Booms? I know with the Sprint, I permanently attached the Booms as most do but that process was with all balsa. On the Elan I was thinking of sanding down the paint then once everything was aligned I would secure with Hysol. Suggestions? Thanks, Doc...[:D]

Hi Paul, I never used that filter, just the ones from JetCat. Maybe it's me and I'm to lazy to go back and read the manual from JetCat but I thought they suggested the filters be placed in a horiz non secured position. If I'm wrong, please correct me. What you said makes sense. Thanks, Doc...[:D]

RE: Boomerang Sprint Build Thread!
Hi, OK, I see what your saying so the filter we are looking at which is after the pump, is unsecured in that hole. This is the way I 1st had it but was told the filter needs to be in a horiz position, not vertical like the picture shows. Your explaination makes sense so I will change that on the Elan. Thanks again, Doc...

Hi, Great looking install. I noticed the filter going to the fuel pump is in a vertical position and secure. Have you had any problem with that? I was told the filter should be in a horizontal position and not secured. I originally had mine like you do but changed it. Thanks, Doc...

Hi, I'm not familiar with that mount as use the JetCat mount. Your right about seeing the suggestion about the 3/8" shim. I added it but had to remove it so as not to burn the leading edge of the stab and the servo cover. After removing the shim, there have been no more heat issues. Doc...
