RE: Sky Raider Mach II - New Colors
Yes, the bottom is beige/tan. I'm not wild about it. I haven't flown one, so I don't know how it looks in the air. Teal would be more in line with the red scheme having the pink on the bottom. I'll suggest changing to teal or metallic green.

RE: Q-500 Sheeted wings and foam cores for sale
Dan, It is a storage facility that caters to people that also work in their units. The building I am in has removable walls and heat and air conditioning. Not controllable on a per unit basis, but they keep it between 60 and 80 degrees. Usually around 70. They had a 15’ x 15’, but I let it get away before I made the commitment. Then they had two 10’ x 18’ units side by side. So they took down a wall and made me a 20’ x 18’. And they added power outlets. The units have pull down doors, but they have walls with swinging doors behind them. I changed out the door knobs with locking units for extra security and for my safety while I’m in the space. I found the space by searching for “mini warehouse in the yellow pages. A couple of guys could share a space like this if they don’t have space where they live. The job market in Charlotte, NC is terrible because of Bank of America and Wachovia. I had been getting interview requests in Raleigh and Greensboro, but I didn’t want to work away from home. But the right opportunity came along and the economy drove the decision. People need sheeted wings. And kits. I didn’t want to stop making stuff just because of being away from home. It has been a challenge, but now I have a shop that can be moved if and when needed. I’ve already made some changes since these pictures were made. I added a table by the pole for wetting out the skins. Over in the corner I was casting a shadow on the work I was doing. Yeah, I need some stuff on the walls. :) I had started putting photos of some of my covering jobs up in my shop at home because of shipping everything out and not having anything to remember what I have done. ;) I will have to print some more photos and some photos from here to put up on the walls. Maybe get some stuff from Facebook. I like putting faces with the names.

RE: Q-500 Sheeted wings and foam cores for sale
I'm working in Raleigh which is 3 hours from home. I can't commute every day. Wing orders require that I make more than just what I can make on the weekends. So I have set up a shop in a mini-warehouse near RDU airport. These photos aren't great as they were taken with my cell phone. But you can see how I set up the work stations.

One more thing. With that many people, consider running Club 40 Sport and Club 40 Advanced. Club 40 Advanced is too fast for a lot of newcomers. Club 40 Sport is great for the average club flyer.

RE: North East Ohio CLUB 40 ....need help!
Thanks. Here's one thing I feel strongly about. Stay with the RCPRO Club 40 rules at www.Club40Racing.com as they are tested, and solid. Don't try to roll your own. You want to be part of the national community. You never know who may come to your races. Yes, the Thunder Tiger Pro 40 is the best engine, but some guys may want to run the SuperTigre GS-40 or GMS 40. Let them. But keep the airframe modifications limited to the ones we allow in RCPRO Club 40. And propellor selection is part of the fun. This one prop stuff is crap. People fly differently and weather affects things. There needs to be some variables, just like NASCAR has spring rubbers and tire pressure, etc. If things are too tighly controlled, people start thinking somebody is cheating. It is best to have a little variance and keep it fun. I had about an hour long conversation with Don Holmes on Friday night. I went over the running of races from making up the matrix, lanes, wing stickers, pylon judges, lap counters, cuts, scoring, and anything else I could think of. I'm going to put it all down on paper in a week or two. Material for a future article and help for all these people starting up. ;)

Sky Raider Mach II - New Colors
I've gotten some emails of people in a panic because the Sky Raider Mach II A178R showed up as discontinued on The World Models web site. No problem. They just came out with new versions of the pre-decorated and pre-hinged model. You can go to AirBorne Models siite at [link]http://www.airborne-models.com/html/productdetails.asp?ProductID=147[/link] and get details there. Plus, AirBorne now mentions the solid colors on the order page. You still have to call to get the solid colors. Here is the green model.

It's a good idea to have some different pattern on the bottom. Especially for 2 pole racing. Something that makes it easy to quickly determine top from bottom. ;)

RE: Pylon Racing for Everyone
That's part of the "creative editing" I was referring to. Those are LA Racer 40 ARF planes. The other "creative editing" was the part about padding the pylons. I don't think padding the pylons would make a lot of difference, but hey, it is a "reader interest" item, so I will defer to the editor on that one. [:D] Hopefully people will visit the web sites and figure out the plane differences. However, I have already heard from one person who ordered a "Sky Raider Mach II" thinking he was getting an LA Racer. I've got to answer that email today. [8|]
ORIGINAL: vertical grimmace I still do not have my mag yet, but I have been contacted by a club member about racing. Your article really excited him and maybe if He can commit, I will be able to lead him into being succesful. Just to let you know your article got to at least 1 newbie. Good job.
Thanks. I have been getting emails and phone calls. I reply to the emails and copy Barry Reade, the RCPRO President, and Ken Erickson, the RCPRO Club 40 Committee Chairman, on the emails so that they can help out. And I refer the people to RCPRO and to these forums. RCPRO has gained some new members. Ironically I had just done a major software upgrade before the article came out and the new forum software was not fully tested and functional. I had migrated the backend database to SQL Server 2005. But hopefully that is all worked out now. The article is reaching people. it is good to know that people do read the articles. And since Michael Ramsey left the line in there about "A future article will focus on how to organize and promote races, so you have some competition." hopefully there will be more feature articles. Michael is a fan of racing. I hope he gets good feedback and more articles make it in.

Southern California Club 40?
I got this email and I'm posting it with permission of the sender. I know about the racing in Hesperia, but I'm not sure about other venues in SoCal or nearby areas.
Hi Don. I read about club 40 racing in the current issue of Model Aviation Magazine I thought this would be fun. I have raced Quickie 500, ¼ midgets, Sailplanes, and giant scale in the unlimited Formula 1 Biplane and the T-6 Class. My son would like to get into racing and the club 40 would be great for us. Giant scale racing is a lot of fun, but it can really put a thorn in my pocket book. I would like to know if there any clubs in the southern California area having club 40 racing. Thanks for your time Carl E. Lindou P.S. I have attached a picture of my Giant scale racing T-6 (Southern Belle)
RE: isolated islands of pylon racing
Jim, Unfortunately you have not really experienced R/C Pylon Racing if the Blue-Ray is your reference point. No form of electric pylon racing has gained a significant following to date. That will change. It takes the right formula and the right people being involved. Club Wingman will be the right formula and will become the Club 40 of electric pylon racing. See www.ClubWingman.com For now, you need to try Club 40. It is "Pylon Racing for Everyone". It is happening in more and more places all the time. Before long, you will not have to travel very far to race, and if you do want to travel, you will be able to. See www.Club40Racing.com and check out my article on page 66 of the October Model Aviation. There are many people who would love to help you organize racing in your area. But it has to be a viable racing class.

RE: Pylon Racing for Everyone
ORIGINAL: vertical grimmace I had a very interesting conversation with this gentleman last night about racing. The article really excited him but he seems to have not been paying attention to the fact that I have had club 40, 424 and 428 at our club for the last 3 years. Not to mention, we have around 5 races each season running all 3 classes in our state. The MA article got his attention though. He had mentioned breaking club 40 down to a beginner and advanced class. This would be feasible if we did not run Q-500, but I informed him that as the CD, I would not want to have too many classes. I feel 3 is enough. You get in more racing with less classes. Also, club 40 is plenty slow enough I feel, for almost all pilots and it is already ''beginner enough'' without breaking it down further.
The first year I ran races at Lowe's Motor Speedway, I did not run the Club 40 Novice class. In 2008 I ran Club 40 Advanced, Quickie 25, and AMA 424. But 424 was too fast for the smaller course. In 2009 I ran Club 40 Sport/Novice, Club 40 Advanced, and Quickie 25. I often loaned out a plane for the Novice class so there would be enough entries and to get some new guys experience on the course. By the last race, some of the more experienced guys raced in the Sport/Novice class. Max Flowe had raced in Club 40 Advanced, but he had some bad luck with mid-airs. He wound up winning in Club 40 Sport/Novice against more experienced guys. He was very happy with his win.
As a side note, we have been allowing almost any engine in club 40 and have even loosened up 424. If someone shows up with a .46 or .50 for club 40 we let them fly. We have allowed .46's in 424 as well. Honestly, the 9-6 mandatory prop limits any real performance gain. This is just what we do locally to try to get pilots to show up. Of course, anyone that is truly interested and continues racing, is encouraged to get a TT .40.
One thing I have learned the hard way is that you must stick to the rules. Don't allow engines that don't conform to the rules. If you are going to allow deviations, change the rules. For Club 40, I highly recommend that you use the RCPRO Club 40 rules. You can tell people to go to www.Club40Racing.com for the rules and allowable modifications. RCPRO rules allow 4 different engines for Club 40 Advanced. There is no prop restriction other than unmodified commercially available. No APC 9x6 rule. When you are flying different sized courses, the pilots need something they can adjust and the prop is the best thing to play with. Even weather makes prop adjustments a good idea. And at your altitude, it is definitely advisable.
One thing else, I have personally had my interest dim for racing but his excitement might be enough for me to still organize and run my race this year. Interesting how excitement can spread and motivate others to be involved. I will always love pylon, I have just diverted most of my energy toward scale now. Like I informed this prospective racer though, It is wonderful for your flying skills and I highly recommend it for improving your piloting skills.
Club 40 is "Pylon Racing for Everyone". I intended it to be just that. A fun class that anyone can participate in. The more, the merrier. It is a pilot skill racing class. An NMPRA racer has suggested to James Barr that he should not be racing in Club 40. I highly disagree. The pilots who are racing against James enjoy trying to come up to his level. They want to beat him. It is their goal to win a heat against him. Same thing with Jim Katz and John Gibson. They are top notch pilots. But many of the pilots just want to race and beat them. It inspires them when they do well against them. In terms of inspiration, you never know who you may inspire. My efforts to revive pylon racing in my area got Jim Katz's attention. When he was at a wedding of one of Mike Langlois's sons, he mentioned to Mike that the farm would make a nice flying field. That flying field is now the Old Julian Airport ( www.OldJulianAirport.com ) and it will be the host to some great 3 pole racing in October and in the coming years. In 2010, there could be as many as 7-10 races at OJA if things work out. And the positives of online comments go a long way. This is our community. We need to treat it just like we are in the room together. I never say anything online that I wouldn't say to someone's face. Let's all have a good time. :)

Pylon Racing for Everyone
My article about Club 40 Racing finally made it into Model Aviation magazine in the October 2009 issue. It is on page 66. It has some creative editing and some minor mistakes, but it should be good exposure for entry level pylon racing. I already have another article on Michael Ramsey's desk. It is primarily about Quickie 25. More feature articles are planned. Scott Causey has his monthly column in the magazine as well and it is a good article. So pylon racing got good coverage in the magazine this month.

RE: The OS 25AX is here
The 25AX is expensive at $140. That's a lot more than the $60 of the GMS. And 25FX's were typically $85-$90 until late in the game. The local Carolina group has specified the OS 25FX with the APC 8x6 prop. And there are some people in the group who are "one engine, one prop" people because of AMA 424. Nevermind that the APC 8x6 is not the best prop for the 25FX and results in difficult takeoffs. I've been flying 25's on Quickies since 2001 and the 9x5 is a much better prop. There are Quickie 25 groups out there who are not specifying the prop. These groups will have less trouble with the engine change and transition.

RE: The OS 25AX is here
I haven't flown it yet. But I did put it back on the test stand last weekend. This was the report I filed at [link=http://www.rcpro.org/net/ThreadView.aspx?threadid=877]Quickie 25 Engine Testing[/link]
I did some .25 engine testing today. I broke in a new O.S. 25FX. Then I tested three engines using the same APC 8x6 prop and 15% Omega fuel with added castor. All had O.S. #8 plugs in them. This is what I observed. O.S. 25 FX Max RPM - 16,230 Sometimes peak RPM - 16,140 Average peak RPM - 16,090 O.S. 25 AX Max RPM - 15,950 Sometimes peak RPM - 15,910 Average peak RPM - 15,850 GMS .25 Max RPM - 15,480 Sometimes peak RPM - 15,330 Average peak RPM - 15,230 I also ran all engines with an APC 8x5 prop. The O.S. engines would turn it to 17,000+. The GMS would barely break 16,000. Unless my GMS is a weak example, it is not really competitive with the O.S. engines.
There was one correction. The FX would turn the 8x5 to over 17,000. The AX would only turn it to 16,800 or so. So the AX doesn't seem to be timed to turn up as high as the FX. The GMS sounds strong. It just doesn't have the numbers. So it is likely a timing issue as well. I think the AX is probably a fine engine. I like the new carb. But I don't think they were going for absolute top RPM with it. It does feel like it has a little more torque.

Tom, Your wing is ready if you want to come pick it up. Thanks for the kind words. it was fun having you over. It was fun seeing you experience the 3 pole course for the first time. It was especially fun seeing you not being able to get enough of it. That's why I do the R/C and pylon thing. Fun. I used to just program all of the time. While that increases my marketability, it doesn't give me as much joy as seeing the smiles on people's faces at pylon races. I really enjoyed the Summer Pylon Series at Lowe's this year. RE: Starting clock for Club 40 Race Horse Starts
In an ideal world, you change the course. However, this is an issue for the 2 pole course, as well as the 3 pole course. At the new Old Julian Airport, Mike can rotate the course 180 degrees about the takeoff pad. Most places have issues though. And changing the course worker locations becomes less than ideal. Yes, the racehorse start is exciting and it (potentially) saves time as well. Go to http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=9002327 and watch the video. The only time I have done an air start was when we were having pylon parties at my house and we got into the air at different times. Air starts on a 3 pole course were exciting as well. ;)

RE: October 2009 extravaganza at Old Julian Airport
If you look at the third photo, you are looking down the main runway. It is graded smooth and has bermuda grass on it. Unfortunately it has been dry this year and the grass has not grown in as well as it otherwise would have. But Mike has been irrigating lately and has gotten more grass up. There is another 700+ feet behind the camera. Mike has considered paving the runway. The takeoff pad has 66,000 pounds of asphalt on it. Good attendence at the races may drive paving the full runway. But the pizza cutters work fine on the grass for landing when the grass is trimmed to short length.

October 2009 extravaganza at Old Julian Airport
October 2009 extravaganza at Old Julian Airport October is going to be an exciting month for racing in the Carolinas. We have the Fall Air Races at Old Julian Airport on October 24 and 25, 2009. These are 3 pole races and will feature some hot AMA 428 racing. Plus we will have entry level racing with Club 40, Quickie 25 and AMA 424. Visit the web site at www.OldJulianAirport.com and the flier page at http://www.oldjulianairport.com/Event_2009-10-24.aspx To get everyone ready for the race, we will have a “Warm-up practice session on Saturday, October 3, 2009. There will be no landing fee for this session. It will be a “Race What You Bring day and while the focus is on the guys getting ready for the race, newcomers are invited to being planes out and try the 3 pole course. Expert help will be available to help you get your planes tuned up for the fall race. And time on the course will help you get those thumbs tuned up. Mike Langlois has installed a new takeoff pad for the 3 pole course and it is great. No pizza cutter wheels digging into the ground on takeoff. Mike has done a tremendous amount of work to make Old Julian Airport a great facility and October is going to be a rocking month for pylon racing. So pack your drink coolers and sandwich bags and come to the practice session on October 3. If you’re coming, feel free to post a message and let us know.

RCPRO Warbird Racing at Old Julian Airport
I delivered a Club 40 plane to Mike Langlois in Julian North Carolina on Sunday August 30. He test flew it and took of from the new maxipad takeoff pad that will be used for the 3 pole course. The pad is great and will make 3 pole racing even nicer there. Visit the web site at www.OldJulianAirport.com I spent a little time surveying the area before Mike arrived and found that we can easily host the 700 foot RCPRO Warbird Racing 2 pole course on the Old Julian Airport field. Mike and I had lunch and discussions about the schedule for Old Julian Airport for 2010. I proposed a spring and fall RCPRO Warbird race and Mike was receptive to the idea even though he has not seen RCPRO Warbirds yet. The likely dates for the races would be the middle of May 2010, probably 5/15, or June 5, and 9/11 or 9/18. I like the idea of running Club 40 Advanced first thing in the morning to warm up the course workers and to get more people to the race. Then run the full bore Warbirds the rest of the day. Since most any Warbird can be raced in RCPRO Warbird racing, I think there is a lot of potential to bring in fliers from around the region to this great new facility. For the rules, go to www.RCProWarbirdRacing.com or www.RCWarbirdRacing.com and check out the specs. If you like this idea, please speak up. If you think you can get others to come race, PLEASE let us know.

However, I personally feel it is important to find a manner of consistency that is easy to implement and enforce. If in fact Club 40 is being promoted as a novice type of racing for the most part, then some of the procedures should be better outlined. This leaves less of a chance for confusion, especially to a club that is just trying to get started. An example of this can be found in the thread that relates to the first Club 40 race that was held in Victorville a few weeks back. The question was raised as to what to do about a tie at the end of the day and what is used to determine a winner. I can see that this question is following the same format in that no one has a real clear cut answer. As this thread was started to ask what others are doing at the start of a race, it is becoming clear that there is not what would be considered a standard practice. ...
When I created the rules draft for Club 40 in 2004, my goal was to create an airframe and engine standard that could be used as a basis for a better version of "Run What You Brung". A sport class using the TT Pro 40 or similar engines and airframes that would be similar in size and drag profiles. I started with the SIG Four Star 40. Then I found the Sky Raider Mach II about the same time as some other people did. When the LA Racer 40 came out, I was excited. When AirBorne Models worked with me to bring out the solid color Sky Raider Mach II planes, I was ecstatic. My goal was to let groups use the racing procedures that complemented what they were doing with either AMA racing, or 2 pole sport racing like RCPRO Warbird Racing. So I did not prescribe any racing procedures. This has worked well for the early life of Club 40. But Club 40 has so much momentum now and so many new clubs are giving it a try that we need to add guidance in the rules. The RCPRO Club 40 Committee is going to work on this. Just as they produced the Modifications list at http://www.rcpro.org/html/rules/club_40/modifications.htm the current committee will refine the specification to include the race procedures. Many old timers are having fun with Club 40. It is just so much fun because so many people can participate.
