RE: Gear Problem on Landing What Would You Do????
I saw this happen with a large skymaster A-10. I'll tell you what Dustin Beuscher did on the hard deck. He came in like he was going to land. Touched down on the one main gear a did a touch and go (bounce and go) the other main droped, full throttle go around and then greased it in next approach with all three down. Not one scrape, It was the second flight on a A-10 that he was flying for Greg Foushi. I would say that was one of the slickest moves I have ever seen. Greg was still smilling after!

RE: WHY GO EDF IF YOU HAVE TURBINES?
Disclaimer: I am not against EDFs. I am not against people who fly EDFs. I dont mind seeing them at events. I have flown smaller EDFS BUT I didn't inhale! I agree with Scott. I personally don't like EDFs, though some of my reasons are different. My main one being is everytime I add up the price of getting a good size EDF and batteries I could have another turbine jet. I'd rather spend that money on more turbines. For me turbines are an addiction! If EDFs were a lot cheaper than turbines, then I would have at least one and preferably something BVM.

RE: BVM Jets Photo and RC Plane Bomber
The terrorist got sentenced recently so the story has resurfaced. Its a sad that you had to call attention to it yet again with your thread. Bob Violet has done a lot to insure the safety of model jet turbines and has helped lobby to allow us to continue to enjoy it. Bob Violet is an asset to model jets. It is ridiculous that you had to call attention to a picture from Top Gun, of a jet doing a scale maneuver in a competition. From Harley's post its apparent that your phone call didn't transpire quite as you described it. I find it interesting that you need to quote your MD and PHD credentials here in a RC Forum. It would appear that you yourself lack confidnece in the points you are trying to make. Perhaps you feel that adding your professional titles at the end will make your post or the points you were trying to make seem more intelligent and creditable. The reality is if your points were really valid they would stand on their own merit. Judging from the previous posts, yours included, I would agree with the "diagnosis" laid out in this thread. RE: Something that I have to ask
ORIGINAL: Ali Fender, I hear you, and understand where you are coming from. I am so lucky with my work, and what I do. I try and make the most of my fortunate position within the industry and exploit it to satisfy my love of RC. So to this extent I try and play with as many aspects of RC as possible. I find that the higher up the RC ladder as it were ( and by higher up, I mean further away from grass roots club flying, and I see this most in competition type flying) you travel, the more elitist and clicky things become. When I first started doing jets in around 2000 it was a hell of allot worse. In the Uk the jet scene was considerably smaller, thus harder to break into, and I was much founder than I am now ( 24 to be precise ) The Uk jet scene at the time seemed almost like a private club that you had to be accepted into and invited into. It was not much better when I started to travel to the US either. I will always remember my first jet meet overseas, and that was Florida Jets 2002.. WOW! That was hard work. Things have changed allot since then, but I can still see how some from the outside may perceive it to be this way. However. The more I see jets become readily available, and tricking through to ''club level'' Rc the more I see this changing, and one may it continue I say. As to why... I think there are many reasons. Yes. I guess cost has something to do with it. I have always had a love for cars, and to my shame, have been a member of a few different owners clubs over the years. Right from my first cars that were VW Beetles, and even a Peugeot. The last owners club I was a member of was when I owned my first Porsche some years ago. It was then that I ran into the snobbery, and attitude that just because the members owned a more expensive car, they were somehow better than those who's vehicle had less commercial value. I didnt really fit the mold ( fairly young for a Porsche owner at the time, more interested in driving the car than cleaning it etc etc) So soon left the club. Ever since then, I have steered clear of owners clubs. Sure I met some great guys along the way, who were more down to earth, but it seemed like the other type were far happier to make themselves heard, and known to other members of the club, and that put me off. I see a level of this in the RJ jet scene. Especially when it comes to passing on advice and opinions. I read some things on here where the people writing them almost preach, rather than advise....Which makes my toes curl. I could write about this for hours, but I won't as I have some flying to do, and the weather here is stunning. Before I go, I have to throw in the fact that I am 99% sure that the PC and Forums distort ones view greatly. My experience has been that people can be two completely different entities when taken away from their means of communicating via a forum. The PC Pilot thing changes some people persona's so much, that they become this Jekyll and Hyde type deal, where when they are behind a keyboard they are a totally different person than when you meet them face to face. True, some I have met are still Aholes when you meet them face to face, but most are quite the opposite of what they seem to be when I read their posts on a forum. The negativity thing..... I just think that comes from many peoples lack of desire to accept new things, as well as the fact that bad news seems to spread so much quicker than good. So its much easier to flame than it is to praise. I have found that its best to try and not sweat it. Find a group of people that you get on with, and stick with them. There will always be haters out there ( don't I know it ) who are just waiting for you to fail, or get something wrong. Don't worry about these guys, in-fact I have found that the more that they see you enjoying this great hobby, and having fun.. the more it beats them up inside. Go grab your Tx, get to the field and hang with the guys you know you get on with, fly for yourself and no one else. As long as you can answer to yourself that you are having fun ( because after all, for 99% of people in this hobby, thats all there is to be gained from it ) As well as being as safe as you can whist doing it. Then thats all that counts. Regards Al
+1 Well stated from the Turbine statesman! RJ did you say RJ? [;)] THE R.J.? Our local youngblood! The force is strong in that one. Good news he's the next generation and he won't be a SOB, he'll help turn it around!

RE: Hot off the Press
The defense of the TSA would be a valid argument if they were a highly trained and specialized security force. It also help if they had or were able to use common sense. Their track record has proven otherwise: Here are prime examples of how ineffective the TSA is: (the second part of the article they missed a gun) http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/loaded-gun-slips-past-tsa-screeners/story?id=12412458 Here is another recent TSA shinning security moment; http://nymag.com/daily/intel/2012/01/tsa-left-potential-pipe-bombs-sitting-around.html The reality is of the last 39 thwarted terrorist attacks post 9/11 (that are public record), the TSA has not been involved in any of them. http://www.heritage.org/research/reports/2011/05/39-terror-plots-foiled-since-911-examining-counterterrorisms-success-stories This is from that same article. Lesson # 9: Current Aviation Security Is Expensive and Largely Inconsequential. Since 9/11, not a single one of the 39 foiled plots was stopped because of physical security measures at U.S. airports. In fact, one of the three successful terrorist plots was a shooting at a ticket counter at LAX airport in Los Angeles. Despite this fact, Congress has poured billions of taxpayer dollars into the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screening line and toward physical hardening of airports. For much of the first decade after 9/11, this was mostly tolerated by the American public as an inconvenience associated with flying. This included such measures as the often confusing “3-1-1 liquids rule after the liquid-explosives plot in 2006 (foiled plot 17), and forcing passengers to take off their shoes for screening after the Richard Reid plot in 2001 (foiled plot 1). The growing nuisance of traveling, however, as well as a recent decision by the TSA to force passengers to undergo either a full-body scan or a physical pat down by a TSA agent, have propelled aviation security to the forefront of public debate. The Administration, for its part, has emphasized that this change was initiated because the Christmas Day would-be bomber was able to smuggle explosives, located in his underwear, through a foreign airport checkpoint and that the metal-detector technology deployed in primary screening would have been incapable of finding the explosive and type possessed by Abdulmutallab had he come through a U.S. airport. Deploying new technologies to meet the threats the nation faces should be encouraged. However, a need to spend money on new technologies is the wrong lesson to draw from the Christmas Day plot. The real lesson can be found in all 39 plots that have been foiled since 9/11: that information sharing and intelligence are absolute cornerstones of effective counterterrorism—not wholesale screening of travelers. The Christmas Day plot in particular demonstrated failures by the Departments of State and Homeland Security to share information and sufficiently connect the intelligence dots. Despite a personal visit from Abdulmutallab’s father to a U.S. consulate office warning of his son’s potential plans for terrorism, the younger Abdulmutallab’s visa was not revoked nor was there additional follow-up with the National Counterterrorism Center—measures that might have placed him on a “no-fly list and stopped him from boarding the plane in the first place. Its true their lack of specialized training, common sense and need for political correctness has allowed them to violate everyone equally and thouroughly. Perhaps this has exhausted them so much that they miss the real threats According to one report, undercover TSA agents testing security at a Newark airport terminal on one day in 2006 found that TSA screeners failed to detect concealed bombs and guns 20 out of 22 times. A 2007 government audit leaked to USA Today revealed that undercover agents were successful slipping simulated explosives and bomb parts through Los Angeles's LAX airport in 50 out of 70 attempts, and at Chicago's O'Hare airport agents made 75 attempts and succeeded in getting through undetected 45 times. Thats a track record Barney fife and Andy could easily beat.

RE: Maj. Woody's X-Treme Jets BAE Hawk 1/5.5
ORIGINAL: rhklenke If you call BVM with a problem with BVM stuff, you get an answer/fix right away and *somebody* always answers the phone. I think the problem with BVM/Skymaster is just what Mike said, they likely don't get much better response from Skymaster than anybody else. I agree that dealing with the Chinese ARF companies is a pain. However, what's the alternative? If I wanted an F-4 of the same size as the Skymaster one I got, then the only alternative is a BVM one, which is twice the price and is a kit that takes *a lot* of time to build and paint. That just wasn't an alternative for me right now, so I'll suffer through the fixing, rebuilding, and in my case, repainting, the stuff that Skymaster didn't get right. I'll still have less $'s and less time in it than if I built a BVM one right now. I think that's why people continue to go for these Chinese ARFs... Bob
I agree with Bob. I have had many dealings with BVM and Skymaster, all which have been positive. I also met Anton at Florida jets last year. Of the chinese ARF's, Skymaster is the highest quality esp. their retracts. You will not find many ARF Jets, custom painted, painted cockpit kit, with quality retracts for that price period. I have always gotten a timely response from Patty and BVM. BVM has always been available to help answer questions or help follow through on an order. If you are upset than pick up the phone and call BVM to discuss it. I have even sent skymaster emails directly with questions and have gotten a repsonse within 24-48 hours. I understand your frustration, and waiting can be a hassle, but owning a buisiness myself I would appreciate it more if customers vented to me on the phone rather than online. As far as BVM being "Pay Pal", "Pay Pal" doesn't write build manuals for skymaster, make upgrade kits, and help with the development of their products, including flying what they sell. "Pay Pal" also doesn't send reps to the events to answer questions about about skymasters jets. I have owned many of BVMs products Kingcat, Bandit and T-33. I have also just ordered the large Skymaster Hawk. I fly locally with BVM and have seen their customer service over the years at the field and at events in action. I know some of their reps personally. I also know and fly with a lot of their customers (people who own and fly skymaster jets), and their customer service has always been extraordinary. I am not alone, read the letters on BVM's website, for BVM and Skymaster. I have been hobby for 12 years and done business with plenty of other companies that have been pretty brutal. I do not believe BVM or skymaster to resemble one of those companies. The choice is always yours as a consumer, but I will continue to strongly support BVM and Skymaster for the reasons I mentioned. I do hope you get your issues straightened out, and back on track so you can go back to enjoying the hobby. All the best, Peter

Hey Alex, I Have been working on some other projects. So, I have been working slowly on the A4 (ie no Alex in front) I decided to mount the servo in the stab for the rudder and will post some pictures when I get a chance. I have the fuel cells assembled and ready to be installed. I have set up the speed brakes (two way evu2) and the nose gear extension (one way evu-2). I have to figure a way to run the speed brake air lines away from the pipe, esp with the scale detail that I made inside the brakes. so Alex what are "we" doing with that? I need a way to "tidy them up" before the get to that first former. All the best, Peter

The F-4 is the more expensive of the two, at up to $2,000, Hahn said. The F-86, one of which Ferdaus actually obtained, costs $600 to $1,000 new. I am currently looking into an "angle" on these being collectors edition jets, that are no longer produced thus increasing the value. Today we tried both these angles on the women married to jet pilots demographic and they both scored high.
