RE: College RC Pilot
It runs solid but I need to get it in tune. I had a deadstick on takeof that ripped the gear out so I am out of flying for the season. That is the problem with only having 1 plane. Thanks for all of the tips, I could maybe swing a small electric but I doubt it so the sim will have to do for now. The problem is that gets old quick.

Thats what i was thinking of too, 3dfoamy has some nice looking aerobatic foamies and I could have some fun with that in the yard or intramural fields. I would need more space for and edf but I think I have it, just wouldn't be as convienant.

RE: College RC Pilot
I appreciate the ideas of starting a club, it is a good one however, probably not an option for me. I am a senior graduating in may with extra classes and a job hunt approaching. I don't think I would have the time or energy to start a club. I just wanted to fly a bit at school. We do have huge intramural fields and parking lots nobody uses I could fly in. I think I might convince myself that an edf jet is the way to go. It would be awesome if we had a club like RIT but we don't. My school has full scale aviation majors even so I bet it could work, but I am not the guy to do it. I spend a lot of time with friends/girlfriend at school so I am just looking for something on occasion, you know the long weekends where everyone but me goes home lol. I appreciate all of the ideas!

RE: College RC Pilot
Yeah I had thought about getting a foamie but I do not have any electric stuff and do not want to really. I am sure that I could do it if I wanted to but it is not worth the hasle for me. My plane is too big and I can't buy another. I want an edf jet because I think I would just get bored of the stryker or other basic e-plane unless it was a profile 3d plane. I have G4 for a simulator but I get bored and have trouble doing realistic flights, lol. I love the Great Planes L-39 and it has the stand, maybe that could be squeezed into the budget. I could fly at dusk to try and keep wind to a minimum. Or I can get an electric heli.

College RC Pilot
Hi Everybody, I am a college student, which makes being an RC pilot a bit more complicated. I go to college 4.5 hours from home. I started flying after I my 2nd year in school. I was wondering if anyone else is in college and if they fly at school. I have found that I do not have the space to store all of that stuff, the ability to bring all of it to and from school, and I am afraid they will break if I do bring them(parties and dumb drunk ideas). I have only one plane right now, had 2 but one was stolen, and I do not want to take the chance of it getting broken. Also it is large and and would be very in the way all year. One other thing is it is almost always windy at school. Pretty much over 15mph everyday. I wish I could fly but have no realistic way of doing it. Just curious if anyone brings a plane to college. Maybe if I had a foamie or a heli I could do it but can't afford any more planes now. Unless someone has a donor[;)]. lol My parents do not really support the hobby so do not really help with costs and transport. My civic barely fits my 25% yak. not an expensive gasser, A cheap, used, needs a lot of tlc and work plane with a ST 3250. I wanted something big but this is all i could afford.

RE: Fair price to pay for building an ARF
This is an interesting thread. I think that the people saying they would do it for free need to consider, once you build a plane for one person who and how many others will want the same. The way I see it 30 is way too much 20 is high but doable. Of course the person can just say no I will have someone else build it or I will build it. I couldn't see why anyone would want someone else to build their arf until I read this thread. Someone said they don't have an appropriate shop, and the bunch of other reasons. I for one move around a lot. I have been in IL twice, OH and PA in the last year and a half. That is a lot of moving around and transporting workshop stuff. But I am lucky i guess, the one thing I do have is space. As to the OP question I would say $150 maybe less. I basically won't know until someone asks me to build a plane for them i guess. I do enjoy putting planes together, but there is a difference between mine and his. Also great planes or Hangar 9 arf will go together well and the supplied hardware can be used more than an off brand arf. I think I would enjoy the opportunity to build and fly many different planes but I would want some kind of $ for my efforts. Another thing is if I built a plane for someone else I would be a lot more careful and would probably be afraid to "try" something I would on one of my own planes. No cutting corners or trusting it is good on someone elses. Just adding my change[:D]

RE: Peak Models, feedback?
I have heard good things about Peak Model in general. Nothing about this plane though. I am not a fan of the MLD 28, I would think you might prefer a different engine if you want to 3d well. It would do fine but I am just not a fan of the small gassers in general.

RE: Best of the Best
I do not think that driver ever actually sold for that but your right. You are dead wrong about swing lessons though. When I was younger I took them once a month or less for about a year maybe a few after that. They shot my game up to a whole new level. Not only did it make my swing better but it taught me how to fix something in my swing later, which I still must do. And as I said buying a more expensive driver will only make a difference to good golfers, buying a new club will not save you from hitting a slice. It will help you be more consistent in your ball flight IF you have a good mechanical swing. It may only save you a shot or two but thats the difference between an 80 and a 79. Big difference there. If you are not a good golfer use the cheap stuff. As long as you have fun! As for the radio's, what the thread was actually about lol, The more expensive radios have better features and just like the golf club you need to be a good enough pilot to tell the difference, plus you get dual rates, mixes, etc. You only need those depending on your flying type so 4 channels work but there is a reason they have better tx.

RE: The end of RCM and civilization as we know it
I understand what you are saying and also do not know why someone might buy a house when retired. I think there is just a difference in age. You have no payments and such which is nice and helps minimize the risk in this economy. I on the other hand am just starting these types of payments. Doing well does not mean you are rich, just means that you are happy and that you still have jobs. Now your assuming. gboulton: The reason I said you were doing well is because you said you had no change in income. That is why I "assumed" the things I did. Congratulations on being debt free.

RE: Best of the Best
You can hit the ball better with a more expensive driver. Miore expensive drivers have bigger sweet spots, more consistency and longer distance. Check golf tests they do all the time on robots that swing the same every time. The problem is that most people are not good enough to notice a difference. They think a 400 driver will fix their 40 yard slice when their money would be better invested in swing lessons. I do not think I have ever seen a driver that cost $1000. The brand new Taylormade R9 is $300 or so I believe. Correct me if I am wrong there but sets of irons may cost that much but not drivers.

RE: All I see is boring planes and boring helicopters
Aerobatics and 3d are the popular planes now. It changes back an forth from model to model. Before it was Yaks now a lot of Edge/extras. I for one like to push myself with the airplane. I am not afraid to fly scale, but how many times can you do a low pass and still be excited. Try harrier rolls on the deck that is tough stuff. I am not saying that scale sucks. I enjoy flying scale every so often but I can't only do it. I am sure all of you disagree and could fly scale all day long, good for you its a hobby do what makes you happy. I for one am relatively new, compared to some and can not afford to buy several hundreds in tools to build when that can buy me a plane to put together in 2 days with tools I already have. This will probably start the ARF/Kit arguement but I like to fly. I build so that I can fly. It might change in the future but for now I am happy. Lots still build and I am jelous of the time and effort they put in and the results they get. ARF's are easier, thats why people buy them and thats why you see similar planes out there. All Just my opinions of course

Radio - JR because I started with it and liked it and haven't gotten to crazy programming stuff yet so I wouldn't know the difference probably. I have heard Futaba's customer service is a bit better, but do not know for sure. Servos - Hitec or JR is all I will use. Servos is a definate get what u pay for situation. I do not think I can bring myself to pay for high end futaba servos yet, but all high end servos are $$$$$[X(]. Recievers - Hitec or JR, because that is what works with my tx Engines - You get what you pay for to a point. OS engines are great but you pay for it. This isn't a best bet for ur money forum but I like my big Super Tigres. They have quirks but once you are used to them they are awesome and not to mention cheap. Gas DA or DL but not really enough experience to comment. Batteries - Anything as long as my voltwatch is connected so that I know what is going on and I can change if necessary. Voltwatch is an 11 dollar safeguard for so many issues! All my simple short experience but you asked[:D]

RE: Unidentified Yak
I did a maiden yesterday. It was short, very short. I started the engine and ran well, other than a high idle. I took off and needed 2 clicks of left aileron and a few clicks of up. The engine deadsticked after about 5 mins and i landed safely. couldn't get the engine started because my glow lighter died. The super tigre 3250 has a TON of power. Too Much in my opinion. I will probably want it when I get the 3d stuff going though. Flies good and was actually almost dead on with the CG. Most say this plane is tail heavy but with a pull pull, heavy engine/mount and the battery just in front of wing tube it balanced just behind reccommended.

It came with screws and anchors for the wall. If anyone is looking for quick cheap hanger for a plane check this out. Mine was almost free because of the 40% off sale. RE: The end of RCM and civilization as we know it
Lots of people drive cars as a hobby, ever seen a car show, or watched horsepower tv every weekend morning. There are different aspects of this hobby and everyone prefers one part of it. I think that sometimes some people will never understand that. I like to fly, I don't hate building but it is something I do so I can fly. There is a lot of pride in building something yourself and I love seeing something I built work. It can be difficult for someone to find the time build build a very good airplane and be an expert pilot. I can't wait until the day I can restore a classic car. My neighbor has a 69 Camaro sitting in the garage in good shape. He wants to buy one of the new camaros, and I told him I will take the other one off of his hands. [:D] Maybe kids spend all of their time learning the video games instead of what you think they should learn. Not wrong or right just different. Video games didn't just recently become popular they have been around since Atari was born in 1972. It is not video games fault. They are there and you can choose not to use them or you can not allow kids to use them. I personally do not play. I didn't have a video game until 8th grade and then I used it occasionally for a few years and stopped. I just don't get it to be honest. I am right on the border I guess for age of video games. Most of my friends play but some don't.

I had my car broken into last night an the person stole my P-51 PTS. It was the airframe with engine and all electronics. The cowl was damaged because it was off of the one that I crashed. I am rather upset about this, they took my iPod too. With a $500 deductible chances are I am not getting anything for it. It had all stock JR gear and no tx as that was inside the house. If anyone sees a Mustang like this for sale please let me know. I am located in the Western Suburbs of Chicago so it will probably be for sale around there. Thanks

RE: Sickening
It is pretty common for an extremely talented builder to not be a good pilot. A detailed giant scale warbird(let alone a multi engine) takes so much time to build and that is what they enjoy doing. I like building but would rather fly. They like building and fly just to see how they did on the build, then build more. Trainers aren't meant to prepare you for warbirds. Imagine if you had a beautiful giant warbird sitting in the corner of the room but you couldn't fly it. that would drive me nuts. People enjoy different parts of the hobby. I will probably try to build a big corsair someday but no time soon. I like aerobatics for now anyways. Another problem is the guys that say "I have been flying for 40 years, I know what I am doing" but they only fly once a month 4-5 months a year. I can fly as many times as they have in 40 years in 2. foodstick you nailed it. you like to build and thats fine build. I can't do it so someone needs to. lol I will fly for you!

I have found the Giles 202 to have a lot of bad tendencies, but it could have just been the one I flew. The Mustang is notorious for bad ground handling. Any plane that is set up wrong becomes quite a handful. As was said I would guess jets are tough but I have't flown one either. Small aerobatic planes are said to be tough to handle too.

RE: Second and 3rd plane.
Fly the 4*. If money is already tight why spend more. You bought that plane as your second plane put effort into it and now you got to fly it. I remember when I was learning to fly(not that long ago) and people thought I was moving too quickly. They say get a trainer then a low wing trainer then this then that. I do not have that kind of money and I am not going to get a plane I don't want to fly. I used a club trainer for 10-15 flights and had it down, got a P-51 PTS flew about 75-100 flights and got a Yak - we will see how that one turns out. I fly a lot and practice on the sim so I progress quicker then what people expect, plus I might of had some natural ability, but anyways if you are comfortable fly it. IF YOUR NERVOUS WELCOME TO A MAIDEN FLIGHT. lol I maidened the first plane that I built and I was so nervous that I almost dropped the tx my hands were so sweaty. Get high(I mean altitude), and just remember that a Trainer will float around a 4* will go where you point it.
