RE: Duratrax VW Bug upgrades
Nice looking body. Should be a blast at the beach. How was your motor temperature? If you don't have one, invest in a IR thermometer. Good way to monitor your gearing changes.

RE: Motor / Differential problem?
But Nitro, he said the motor isn't getting very hot to touch. If it was over geared, wouldn't the motor be getting hot too? Huck, I'd agree the car is probably over geared, especially if you're running on grass. These cars don't like grass. Unless it's REALLY short, and dry & crunchy. I'd say it's the grass running that's giving you motor problems. I can't believe the motors are THAT crappy that a slight over gearing would burn them up so fast. That motor I mentioned that the brushes FELL OUT cuz it got too hot? Grass running.

RE: B4.2 & Futaba 3PRKA Throttle Issues.
Yikes! A runaway electric?? I didn't think that was possible. In my experience, when I got my Castle system, I still had an AM radio that came with the car. That Sv2 system put out so much RF "noise" that the radio was only good for a range of 20ft before the car would just stop. I had to get a 2.4Ghz radio to make the car useful. That said, you HAVE a modern radio, so that shouldn't be the issue. However, if your receiver or antenna is really close to the motor wires, try to relocate them. And make sure your antenna is sticking UP, not laying down.

I saw a shadow of someone holding the vid-cam on a pole, but they certainly weren't running along side the car. Was the cameraman on a moped? A bicycle? Some of the tracking shots were done with the cameraman in the real car using the camera pole, yeah? Brilliant editing. What did you use for the editing and rendering?

RE: Motor / Differential problem?
The diff action you describe does indeed sound just fine. (Although, it could probably stand a re-lube) What kind of motor? Brushed? Brushless? Do either of you have an infra-red thermometer? You should. If you cannot hold your finger on the motor for a full 3-5 seconds, the motor is getting too hot. I've had commutator brushes FALL OUT of a brushed motor cuz it got too hot. A brushed motor can handle up to 130 degrees. A brushless motor can handle up to 160 without damage. maybe a little more. What size pinion and spur gear are you running? and what is stock gearing? If you are using a larger pinion gear than stock, that will increase the load on the motor and cause it to run hotter. Switch to a smaller pinion.

RE: Duratrax VW Bug upgrades
Since you'll be running on sand mostly, this may not be an issue for you, but I have the Evader, which is basically the same chassis/trans/motor as your bug. I found, when installing a brushless system, that the wheel drive pins and the pins behind the large bevel gear in the diff kept shearing off after only a couple runs. Replace the drive pins with .062in (1.57mm) music wire and the outdrive pins with .047in (1.19mm) music wire. You'll never break one again. Also, installing a brushless-model diff will eliminate any possibility of stripping a diff gear. The only thing I worry about regarding your VXL system is the motor. It's vented, is it not? You might have issues with sand getting in the motor. A fully sealed motor would be better for sand running.

RE: Tamiya Baja Champ Cutting Out - Ideas?
And what kind of battery? NiMh? Or LiPo? It sounds, from your description of the LED behavior, that the battery voltage could be sagging under full throttle, indicating a weak battery pack, causing the ESC to cut out, or, the ESC's Low-Voltage Cutoff (for LiPo) has been set. Either could cause the behavior your describe.

RE: The Evader Coalition ~ T.E.C. Part 2.
Have you got the stock plastic shocks? Or the aluminum ones? The stockers can be fixed with some cheap o-rings. I have the aluminum ones. No top cap, or bladder. The bottom seal the shaft goes thru IS the cap, and houses the o-ring seals. I always have a couple of them pre-built on-hand, in case one fails. Which I never thought they'd do. But I did have one actually fail on me last week. Usually I only have to replace one when I strip the plastic threads, screwing it down too tight. The music wire will do ya just fine. You do have the metal diff gear, yeah? The only other thing you will wear thru quickly are the pins in the dog bones. They just wear out eventually. I think 3/32 spring pins can be used to replace them, tho you do have to use RED Loctite or tire glue to keep them in, as they tend to wiggle out.

Good idea to replace both of the diff pins behind the bevel gear. If that's what it is. Could also be the drive pin on the top shaft behind the slipper plate.

If anybody out there knows where I can get an Evader ST top shaft (any price) plz post.
And you're running 3S? Hmm...wonder why your top shaft got bent? Jus' kidding. You could try straightening the top shaft, but if you work it too much, it could weaken the metal at the bend, and then it could snap at that point when you go full throttle on 3S!!

Or, if the cover is misaligned, it could contact the spur and melt it. (It's happend to me) The good news is, for $2, you get a new gear cover AND two new screws. RE: Mamba monster truggy elec problem
Are you using an old AM transmitter? When I got my Castle system (now deceased) it put out so much RF noise, it interfered with the original Tactic AM radio and limited the range to a little over 10ft, at which point it would start to act like you describe, or stop altogether. Had to upgrade to a 2.4ghz system to solve the problem. It might also be the BEC in your ESC crapping out, as I've heard the Mambas are wont to do, causing your receiver to "brown out".

It'll be hella-fast compared to your old stocker! (on LiPo anyway) I've been running EZruns in both my cars. Love them. I had a Sidewinder before, but it crapped out, and Castle was like completely incommunicado. Couldn't even get them by phone! So if yer gonna have no support, why pay the premium? As for gearing, start with stock. If the motor gets too hot, gear it down. If the ESC gets hot, gear it up. And spend a few extra bucks for an infrared thermometer. Normal operating temp for a brushless motor is around 150F. Don't let it get over 170, try to keep it under 160. Otherwise heat will cause damage.

I got it charged, put it in the evader, thought I had the gear mesh set right, I instintly strip my spur. Got the wheels turning and the tires ballooned like 6 inches! crzy. Lipo is awesome. I was going to the get a robinson racing 72T 48P stealth pro spur. Will this strip easy? How to you properly set the gear mesh. Hobbyshop guy told me to fold a piece of ordinary paper in half so it's twice as thick as when you started, put it between the pinion and spur, press the pinion up against the spur with the paper between, tighten the motor screws, and remove the paper. Is this right?
I hadn't heard of "folding it in half". I'd been told just a single thickness. The RR spur should be much tougher. What kind of surface are you running on? And what tires are you running? Also, what motor? I'm running a 4300kv EZrun "small block", and on 2S, I rarely get above half throttle unless I'm doing a straight-line speed run, topping out near 40mph. I cannot imagine running a 3S in it. It'd be uncontrolable. Now maybe if I had a 3000kv motor and geared it a little differently, I could run a 3s on dirt. I also wonder how the ol' DTX tranny/diff will hold up to 3s bashing........

check and tighten all screws.....open tranny (and diff) and add grease, they never put in enough....dump the shock fluid and put in 35wt.....get new tires and wheels if you're going off road....oh, and make DANG sure the bottom cap on the plastic shocks (where the shaft comes out) is tight, use blue loctite if you have to. If that sucker comes loose, it'll break the threads off and then you need new shocks. NTR - Way back up there somewhere, you asked how my tranny was holding up....it's doing great! It's sort of a bastard child, not stock, but not full BL either. I converted the slipper to an Associated-type, but I'm using the stock EXT2 top shaft/gear. And I installed the BL metal diff. My other Evader tranny is still bone stock, tho I'm waiting on a metal diff for it. Ordered it in FEBRUARY and STILL WAITING!!!

RE: The Evader Coalition ~ T.E.C. Part 2.
Hey Burnin', I agree that 3s LiPo would be too much for your ST. The diff may not be able to handle it, especially if you're running the plastic diff gear and grippy tires. Get a Gens Ace 2s 30C LiPo for $24 and you'll be happy. But you did have a question about the diff shims, so you are running the metal diff, aren't you? The shims go behind the wide end of the spyder gears, between the gears and the case. I believe they are there to keep the gears from rubbing on the case and to keep proper mesh. I've posted this before, but here's the thing on the metal diff: it has EIGHT of those little case screws, four on each side, unlike the plastic one. And those screws like to come loose. if that happens, your spyder gears loose mesh and can strip out in a hurry. I strongly advise that anyone with a metal diff that if you haven't done this already, do it now! That is - take it apart and clean it thoroughly especially the screw holes. Reassemble one side using blue loc-tite in the screw holes. Don't use too much as you'll still need to get the other side on. Fill the case with you choice of diff fluid, or like I did, and use Trak-Power gear grease, and assemble the other side same as the first. Let it sit for a day to fully cure, then put it back in the tranny and grease up the tranny with Gear Grease. I REALLY LIKE Trak Power grease, the blue stuff in the little tub. Used to be called Grim Racer Speed Grease. I've had ZERO issues with the metal diff since. Oh and I also used music wire to replace the pins behind the bevel gears in the diff. The stock pins would break on me. Crappy Chinese metal......

Harlow - Wow, you got the tire off the DTX wheels w/o destroying the wheel? Good on you! My buddy tried it and melted the wheel. NTR - No I haven't upgraded to the actual BL tranny from the BL Evader, but I HAVE installed the metal diff from the BL in ONE of my cars. Still waiting on DTX's Slow Boat From China for #2. It's really odd: when we first got these cars, stock brushed mind you, we were stripping top gears like crazy. Of course, THEY were in short supply too. Now that we've upgraded to BL systems, we haven't stripped one top gear yet! It's like, for a while, DTX's manufacturer lost the recipe for good hard metal and were putting out crap, but then they fixed it? I dunno. Now it's just the plastic diff cases that strip. The metal diff solves that problem. Will a nitro evader top shaft work in the electric? You'd have to check the specs. Dimentions, etc. RCLUGNUT10 may have info on that.
