RE: ***Warbirds Over Delaware 2009 - RCU Event Coverage***
ORIGINAL: RCKen
ORIGINAL: STUKA BARRY
ORIGINAL: hdwideglide03 LMAO. That is unreal. I would have never believed it if it wasn't on video. That would have gone down as Warbirds over Delaware Myth without video. Great coverage Ken and thank those guys for that video. Joe
That incident was pretty bizarre. If I was'nt right there to witness it, I would'nt believe it either. When it bit thru the fence, it ran right at me then went after the plane. Another milestone in RC history happened on Friday at the noon time break. ''Warbirds Over Delaware'' broke a world record of 34 WWI aircraft in the air at one time. This record included 1/4 and 1/3 scale aircraft. It was a sight to see, and even more of a thrill to have flown in the event. I'm hoping someone will post up video of this too. It will be documented on SKS Video ''Warbirds Over Delaware 2009'', but it would be nice for all RCU members to see a quick clip of the event.
Barry, IÂ will have complete video of the WW1 gaggle flight as well as the rest of the noon show when the complete coverage of Warbirds Over Delaware is posted in the RCUÂ Magazine. Ken
I tried everything I knew to get a good photo of the mass WWI flightm, but my Nkon D80 300 and 135 lenses were not wide enough to get a panoramic view. Here are some shots that my wife took with her way less expensive cannon.

RE: Spektrum DX5E, DX6i or DX7 for surface use?
ORIGINAL: robwiljas Ok yeah I'm familiar with the modes, I fly mode 2, it's just that none of my recievers are marked ch1, ch2 etc... they're marked throttle, aileron etc... and I can't remember from my old days in R/C which channels were what on aircraft radios. I figured 1 and 2 would be on the same stick, so throttle/rudder or elevator/airleron. If channel 1 is throttle (left stick) and channel two is aileron (right stick), then that could work as I just want to have my steering on the right stick. Can anyone confirm this, and or know if they will bind together? Thanks.
I did it to my Traxxas Monster truck. Bi-passed the gear change module. Converted my old JR 347 to 2.4 GHz. Fitted a 6100 to the car, Throttle = ch1 aileron stick =ch2 reverse=ch3 (Mixed channel to be controlled by a rotary knob so that the reverse could not be easily be selected by accident. In my case I have throttle on the right stick or the left stick. Same with rudder or aileron for steering. Then it can be driven in either mode one or two. (Modes are Switch selectable using mixes) I put a spring on the throttle stick, removed the ratchette so that the brake/throttle works 50-50 and returns to idle/center when released.. Driving is very good with dual rates and expo. DSM2 ground range is great but will go into "failsafe" if a big hill gets in the way. Better than DSM car radios by a mile. Regards, Eric.

There is a little footnote to the story. I made a second WM P-51 by removing all of the equipment and swaping aound the unspoiled cow; etc. The net result is one static version and one version that I could still fly. Here are some pictures from today at the field. Regards, Eric.

RE: WORLD MODELS P-51 MUSTANG GS VISITS MCGUIRE AFB
WORLD MODELS P-51 MUSTANG GS VISITS MCGUIRE AFB-continued My little P-51 sat alone in the hot July New Jersey sun. She was not the most scale rendition of a P-51 that I have ever built, but she had her good points of prowess and she more than did the job. The P-51 nose was carrying the name of a one of our club member’s late wife, Dottie. The NJ Pine Barons club member, Bob Emme, also flew Mustangs in WWII. He is now 87 years old and way back then he had her name painted on the nose of his plane. He too fought in the same war as the Tuskegee Airmen. They were all just young men fighting for our freedom and our country back in the day. As I mulled this over in my mind, the speeches drew to a close. As soon as the ceremony proper was over the Tuskegee Airmen made a bee-line for my airplane. Chairs were quickly set up and they their photos taken with my airplane. Luckily I managed to get one with me on the end of their line. You can imagine how precious that photo is to me now. Without any discussion or warning a black magic marker was produced and these wonderful old men immediately got up and signed my plane. They took their time, taking turns with the pen. We had to pick the model up for most of them due to their advanced years. I never did get to fly the plane. You can all guess that it will never fly again! What a day! The price of admission was right. “Gas to get there $5, World models Mustang GS $500, the Photo & memories ABSOLUTELY PRICELESS! My thanks go to Bob tucker for inviting me, the USAF for letting me on the base and to those wonderful old men who made it a better world for all of us. RE: WORLD MODELS P-51 MUSTANG GS VISITS MCGUIRE AFB
I didn't think that there was much beter than R/C scale. Everyone that we put in the air is a tribute to those who went before us. A signed Yeager P-51B is a very big deal. Do you have any pictures of your disp[ay and painting? I am now working on a bit of scale documentation so that the Tuskegee story stays with my signed one. My son in the Navy, (USS Harry S. Truman), really gets it and was showing the pictures to all of his command. My other six (five girls) may need some "help" to know what this is all about. At first I was thinking bitter-sweet etc. Now I see it all as sweet! Thank you all for the responses. Like many "posters" on RCU I was a bit reticent to expose the personal side of the story, but RCU has a lot of really great scale "guys" in it and I thought that you all might like to see what went down. Thanks, Eric.
ORIGINAL: rwright142 WOW! That's cool. I know I would retire it to a display case or some other area of honor. Congrats on being an incredible part of that celebration. I'm so jealous...
Little did these already retired airmen know that they had just retired this P-51. There is already another World Models P-51 on its way to me, so I can get one back in the air again. I will turn the signed one into a purely static model. My wife, the artist, is investigating what we should do to as regards some form of preservative for the ink?. I am very wary of even lightly touching any of the signatures. I have them in soft wing bags right now in a high/safe place in the workshop. Regards, Eric.

WORLD MODELS P-51 MUSTANG GS VISITS MCGUIRE AFB
WORLD MODELS P-51 MUSTANG GS VISITS MCGUIRE AFB Picture this if you may: You are fast asleep and the phone rings. It’s 6 AM on Thursday July 17th 2008. On the phone is a friend of yours, in my case USAF Master Sergeant Bob Tucker. He asks “Could you be at McGuire AFB in an hourbring your Mustang! You leap out of bed planning to charge your batteries on the way there. The Airborne Models, a.k.a. World Models, 80 Mustang was loaded into my van in double time. I hastily select my best AMA shirt and hit the gas pedal. (BTWIs it a gas pedal if you drive a diesel?). It took us nearly two hours to get through base security which included a full scan of my quite large white Dodge Sprinter van. Before I could do a demo flight we knew that there was an official ceremony to unveil a new street name. We set up the 80 span Mustang up next to the podium as a sort of display piece, parked the van and sat and waited. An Air force blue bus stopped next to us and then eight of the surviving Tuskegee airmen stepped out took their seats in the front row. The speeches told us all that the Tuskegee Airman had been awarded the Medal of Honor. The existing street name was now being re-dedicated. There is now a replica of the medal at the beginning of the sign It was a fantastic time and place to be. These great men and senior USAF officers gave inspirational speeches of how the Tuskegee Airmen had paved the way for racial equality in the military. Two F-16’s performed a low fly-by. Boy did that get everyone’s attention! The whole ceremony was set against the backdrop of the McGuire wall and a full size P-38 which is positioned in the center one of bases’ road rotary/circles.

The leads are in grooves about 1/16" wide that go from the servo to the main channel for the ESC wires. About 2- 3". I made the grooves by hand turning a big dremel disc. Quite easy to do. Once the leads were pressed in place I dressed the grooves up with balsa-rite filler. Just wiped in and smoothed off with a finger. Regards, Eric.

RE: Great Planes L-39
My servos and my buddie's servos stripped. It seems that they all will sooner or later. We upgraded the motor to a 4200kv and they fly very well. plenty of flight time. Actually we have built four now after destroying the first two when we tied the record for the lowest high speed pass [:)] Here are some tips/changes that I would like to pass along for anyone who might find them usefull. 1. put the servo arms through teh top of the wing and put the horns on the top. You will get zero gears stripping. 2. Consider using 1/16" up-aileron on both sides for hand launch and landings. Lets the airplane fly much slower without tip stalling. Very stable on launch. Gives you lots of time to get your hand back to the sticks. 3. Move elevator servo back under stab. Helps with CG when using big Lipo packs (2200 mAh 3 or 4 cell etc.) There is now no servo in the rear of the cockpit 4. Add a rudder servo into fin. Really needed for formation flying and smooth course corrections at speed etc. Does the same as #3 5. Cool off the battery with ducts. Mine used to get very hot. Now they are easy to handle and I am much happier knowing that I am much less likely to fry a pack in the air. Regards, Eric. Below are some easy high-vis. mods. The LED shows up well in teh truns towards you and also tells you that you have left your pack plugged in!

RE: JR 10X Smoke Pump Mixing Question
It's not too hard and very effective. CODE 17 INH CH6 TRIM SET (82 I THINK) THROTTLE DOWN TO 30% MIX 56 ENTER THRO TO AUX-1 (1-6) CHOOSE CURVE ENTER CHOOSE "EXP" SET 6 POINTS ON YOUR CURVE LINEMOVE THROTTLE STICK UP SLOWLY AND PRESS "STORE" WHEN IT APPEARS. (TIP - START WITH IDLE TRIM ALL THE WAY DOWN) "SEL" TO S/W SELCTION - CHOOSE MIX S/W "SEL" TO LAST SCREEN - CHOOSE "ORIG" LOW AND HIGH ENDS BY MOVING STICK AND USING + OR - USE INTERMEDIATE POINTS TO GET MORE OR LESS RPM DEPENDING UPON THROTTLE OPENING. (Tip - run fluid through the pump in a closed loop with to and from a tank while doing the initial setting.) Regards. Eric. P.S. You can also mix Aux 5 to Aux-1 to have an overide on the liquid flow speeds. Use MIX S/W again so it will only operate when you turn on the pump. This will let you increase/decrease the smoke while you fly and are experimenting with flow volumes use about 30% +/- on the mix values.

RE: Warbirds over Delaware
Even though I was there I really appreciate the photos. You just can see everything in the air and on the ground. Way too much to absorb. I liked the way it was set up this year. The public had a much better view of the flying because the whole flight line was not obscured up by EZ-ups. I also looked in the large white tent at the dimming of the day and was astonished at how many airplanes were in there for the night. My math is not accurate but there could easily have been between $500,000 and a million dollars there. God knows how many miles they travelled and most the millions of hours spent building them. Forgive me if Iwent overboard a bit, but I have never seen so many beautiful scale R/C aiplanes assembled in one place EVER! Outstanding, is the word that is imprinted in my mind. My personal thanks to everyone who had a part in this, who attended and who flew, wind or not! Absolutely fantastic show chaps! Best regards, Eric.

The 2200 pak zonne pack gave a good 6 minutes but made for a long take-off run. The 1300 had the nose up and away in about 30'. Climb out was slow but steady. I would have loved to have been able to pull up the landing gear but settled for the "danglies" in the interest of lightness. The airlane was acceptable with the stock unit but only gave 3 minutes on the supplie pack. Rolls were Ok but much better whend the twin elevators were made into rollevators. They both activated like ailerons when the switch was on! Two servos were used for the aileroans which gave flaperon, airbrake and differential. Twin rudders were fitted and conjoined with the steering servo. Photo shows twin rudder bellcrank. Aileron was mixed into the rudders which gave bottom rudder in the turns which kept the nose down when entering a banked turn. 5 flights later and we are starting to do high alpha approaches. The nose can be held quite high at slow speeds and roll control is enghanced with the rollevators engaged. Using up aileron on both sides helps prevent the wing from stalling at these ludicrous nose-up angles. Having seen the full-size Super Hornet do high alpaha passes from the deck of a carrier, I just had to do them. Not the fastest of electric ducted fans but rolls great. will loop, does tight turns and lands at a crawl. Regards, Eric. Now if I can just get my hands on a a second one to do tight formation flying!!!!!!!
