RE: Need advice with a Rossi Header
Thank you for the help! Hope to have this boat running shortly. Im rigging it during the week after work, the honey do list is too long with a new house to play during the weekend.

Need advice with a Rossi Header
I have a ZIPKIT JAE 21Rigger that I need to complete. Its been in storage for a year and I have forgotten a lot. I have a Rossi T21, header and pipe. I found the gauge that was supplied with the motor. Question is how much do I shorten the header?

RE: DX3S whos running it???
I just purchased a DX3S and the marine receiver. I am have been building a Rigger and am finally ready to start installing everything. So in a couple weeks hopefully it will get wet. I have used spectrum in my planes with excellent results and do not see a down side especially if you are going to race.

I am finishing up the tub right now just need a few coats of clear and then its rigging time. The sponsons are ready to go. Once I get it together I will have to balance a prop or two and break in the motor.

RE: .21 Zippkit ready to go
I have one sponson finished and the other ready for clear and decals. I took an hour or so today doing some logistics, mounted the servo trays, switch mounted, battery placement, receiver etc................. So tomorrow hopefully I will get the push rods bent and installed. Once I get all of that done I can strip it all out and finish building the tub and get it finished. I am getting excited looking in the box of parts and seeing less and less in there!

Decal Application
What is the secret? I have some clear decals I want to put on my hull. Everytime I try and apply them I get air pockets and finger prints and they look like garbage. I know there has to be a trick. Any advice would be appreciated.

How did it go? I am still painting sponsons...................ugh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had one almost perfect till I did something stupid...........so I am back to wet sanding almost back to 2000 grit. I had to take a break from them or go insane. So I have opted to clean the warehouse, once that is over I will be completing the build and look forward to getting it in the water.

RE: .21 Zippkit ready to go
I don't see why a wing foil wouldn't work.....................A butchered plastic soda bottle would work fine..........its light weight and pre-formed. It would deflect the water from hitting the carb in case you get caught in a wake or rooster tail of another boat. As we know not getting swamped and finishing are 75% of the race. Or at least down here it is. The faster the better as long as your ahead of the pack. So here is where I am coming from.............our conditions in FL are definitely different than those up north. Temperature and RH are huge factors in performance at least from a drag racing perspective. Since we are looking at speed...................I believe there is a direct translation. So here is my logic................... When I worked at Gainesville Raceway (drag strip) during college, we took notice what would effect performance. I worked everything from tech to the starting line.....it was an awesome job!!!! My best friend owned a 1968 Don Long front engine dragster powered with a 355 Chevy naturally asperated. We ran the local 1/4 mile and traveled all over for the quick 1/8 mile races. If it was a hot day, we watched the crowd and looked for an extremely over weight individual. If they were huffing and puffing we removed the air filter to carb. for more air flow. We had a log book registering what we did..............throttle stop settings, tire pressure, etc........... Since we had enough information and I was half way decent in mathematics I could dial us in pretty good. Today for example it was 86 degrees and the RH was 70% I believe Ram air could be very beneficial in these conditions. As a plus with a 90 degree bend and a screen I believe water intake would be minimized due to small portal. However this is all speculation............. I could be completely way off base............... At least we knew in a car for every 100# you lost you gained a tenth of a second..............I have no clue what it is here. I actually am sort of excited as my Spektrum 3S has the telemetry built in...........however on the other hand I just want to just go have a good time. So for now I am not going to set that up. I just want make some water fly for a while............................. However smokin some folks from the start with a properly set up rig would be awesome!

RE: .21 Zippkit ready to go
Laugh as you may about the water deflecting carb..................I was thinking Dubro exhaust deflector with a screen turned for turned forward for some Ram air affect. It should be a neat experiment to say the least. If the screen is set at 90 degrees the water splash issue from other boats should be far less. With my thinking is negative air pressure isn't an issue with this setup. My sponsons are curing right now ............................... I'll wait a few days and wet dry with 1500 grit and then wax polish............ They look awesome!

RE: .21 Zippkit ready to go
Did you get your problem resolved? How does it run under a load? I was looking at building a water kit for the initial break in. I figure I will run about three tanks before I toss it in the water and run it for a bit. However I am not completely sure how much water pressure on the inline I should give it.

RE: .21 Zippkit ready to go
This weekend was productive.............I got the shaft installed, motor mounted, strut and rudder in place. I am waiting for a Tower order to arrive so I can continue rigging. Once I get everything positioned I'll have to take everything out, glue the top on and finish the tub. The sponsons are built and painted............my 5 year old son talked me into it painting them. He wanted a red boat so I compromised and said only the sponsons. They turned out, pretty darn good and boy do they they glow when the sun hits that metallic red paint. So they are now ready for a 1500 grit wet dry sanding and then the final clear epoxy coating. Do you any of you put your decals on before the final coat to seal them under the finish?

RE: .21 Zippkit ready to go
Thanks for the reminder! I was thinking along those lines, had a couple flashbacks from rigging tunnel hulls. That extra space is really nice and your not working in a hole. I have the sponsons each about half built. Hope to finish them up this evening. It is going together really smooth and easy. I should have everything ready to be put together by the time the motor arrives. The pipe bending looks like fun! I will take my time with that. I am going to anneal and pack it full of sand before bending it, that way it can't crimp on me.

Cool thanks for the video!!! I got my sponson plates in so I will start building again tomorrow night. I sealed the inside of the tub this afternoon........I still have to glue the top and nose on to complete the tub construction. I am waiting for the motor to arrive so I can mount it and then bend the shaft tube and get everything installed before I glue the top on. I just saw it was easier to seal everything before gluing the top on.

RE: .21 Zippkit ready to go
I am not an engine guru, but I would venture to say a bent needle is not a good thing. I think that the needle wouldn't seat well and flow would not be even or restricted. The blunt needle got me there. I would speculate that fine tuning would be a bear. You said that the motor runs great but dies as soon as you launch or put a load on it? I assume that you do a trial tune with the boat in a cradle in shallow water, running it up under a load to get things in the ballpark before it maiden launch. So this next idea is going to sound silly, but have you played with or swapped out the glow plug yet? I have seen this happen with planes on more than one occasion. Just a possible snake in the grass. Don't know if any of that helps or not. Hopefully, someone has an answer for you!

RE: .21 Zippkit ready to go
I learned a trick from an old time bowyer (bow builder/archery) that really yields good results, just a slightly different approach. Finish sand and scrape everything to the point you are thinking about applying your first coat. Use water as your first coat......wipe the wood down with a sopping wet towel and raise the grain. Let it dry and then scrape and finish sand again. Now proceed in applying your finish. I found his method cuts down on coats, thickness and the end result is night and day. Give it a shot next time.

RE: .21 Zippkit ready to go
The fillets I created are 1/3 the size of that of balsa. I doubt I added any weight at all. However, structurally I added more integrity. Once cured this material has a shear strength of 3500 psi between blasted steel. Yes a bit over kill academically for this application but with its non sag vasoline consistency its easy to work with. I am at a standstill for now on the tub until I get my motor, and I can't start the sponsons until I get the missing plates. So things just came to a screeching hault! I am curious as to the weight difference of your sponsons. I am not going to go through the seal, sand, prime, paint and then clear coat. I was thinking more a long the lines of adding a tint to my epoxy clear coat to get my coloring. It doesn't take much to tint the material. It will be both my prime and top coat.

RE: 2.4 ghz TX and RX question
Thanks for the response! I looked at the DX6i and of course it says for air use only so obviously it doesn't have the marine sticker. I think I will probably get a pistol tx for this rig and keep my boats separate from my heli and planes. Probably will be a smarter idea. I like the CRC idea and spraying everything down first. I didn't realize there were now "green" balloons. Thanks for the heads up!

RE: .21 Zippkit ready to go
Thanks for the pictures. Good looking rig! I had some extra aluminum 3"x3" angle laying around that was used for our hurricane shutter system. I squared them up and screwed them to a leveled work table. So far (keeping my fingers crossed it remains that way) everything is dead nuts on. I have the tub completed to the point where the corner stock is to be glued in. My company manufactures epoxy adhesives and we make a few pastes so I will be making fillets with that rather than use the balsa. It will come out stronger and slightly lighter. I too will be running the Cooper SS pipe. It should be interesting to see what the final weight of the vessel is. I almost don't want to put any color/paint on it just clear epoxy it and go. However some color would make it easier to see. I am starting to get excited!

RE: 2.4 ghz TX and RX question
I will look at the DX6i box and see is if has the marine sticker on it. From what I have read on the Spektrum site all the new DSM2 TX are compatible. I know it won't work with the DX6 TX I have as it is RX specific and not the new DSM2 technology. However good point, I should make sure before pulling the trigger on it. I will need to buy a new RX for this boat regardless just figured the extra $10 for the marine would be worth the money. Every boat I have owned has had water somehow find its way into the dry box at some point. So did you bag the SR3000 Rx?

2.4 ghz TX and RX question
I have been out of the loop from a surface aspect of the RC hobby for the past 15 years. Technology has made a few advancements during that time, so please bear with me. I have a couple elementary Tx and Rx questions. I currently own a Spektrum DX6i and have my planes on it. Is there any reason why I can't purchase a marine RX (MR3000) use the DX6i to run my boat too? Is there any real advantage to using the pistol grip type TX over the dual stick? If there is a huge difference then I will bite the bullet and buy a pistol TX. I assume there is a way to water proof the standard RX for these systems. I know when I used to use FM or AM setups years ago in my boats I used to put the RX in a balloon. Is that okay to do with the 2.4 ghz receivers? Or is there a different method?

RE: .21 Zippkit ready to go
Thanks for the input guys! I emailed Glenn this afternoon. I am torn between the Top 21 long stroke and the 35 Plus. I will see what he has to say and go from there. Bottomline I want an above average boat from a engine standpoint and not break the bank. I do have somewhat of a budget, I have to keep things in check or the wife will throw a fit. From what I have seen lately at the local club, those who have reliable equipment and can "finish" the race are in the top standings. There is only so much equipment can do, then it is up to driving ability. That alone will make or break you regardless how much you spend.

Its not a money issue. I learned years ago if you can't put the ponies to work then they are a waste. That was why I was asking. Obviously the issue is not as prevalent as I thought. I was leaning towards the 35 plus or the 21 Long just not sure where the trade off is from a performance standpoint. I didn't know the Top 12 even existed till you mentioned. I will call Glenn and pick his brain. Thanks for the info!

RE: .21 Zippkit ready to go
Thanks for the information. I purchased all the hardware when I was there at the show. So from a hardware standpoint all I am short at this point is a prop, engine, header and pipe. I opened the kit today and was short a sponson plate on both riggers. So I called Joe and he is shipping out the plates to me. I will start putting it together here within the next week. What kind of difference will I see if I opt for 35 plus over the Top 5? Is it worth the extra if I intend on racing? I know there is a point of diminishing returns, question is where it lies.
