RE: Sundowner 50 Arf
Thats crazy. Im flying a OS 91 4c and its ok. But my idle is set around 2500. Comes in a lil quick but is easy to control. Havent had to worry about stalling it.

RE: Help ( Ideas ) Finding A Spinner
I know tru-turn is expensive but I see the spinners as long term investments. I dont mind paying more for a spinner knowing I can use it again (as long as the plane doesnt go down in the woods or fly off in some random direction). I actually dont care about the brand I just want it to look and fit right.

RE: GP SHOESTRING or Midget Mustang by WM for YS 1.10
I have the cosmic wind minnow. First plane was a good flyer but not fast with the OS 91 surpass. This ones gettin the YS110. I cant imagine any probs with the shoestring. Im just gonna lay a strip of glass down the center of the wing and add a couple dowels for the leading edge of the wing to fit into the fuse. Gonna try robart hinges all around. If the rear surfaces arent big enough Ill do some dubro nylon hinges. I initially hated the way the minnow looked in pics but bought it built as a second plane. It looks much better in person and flys great. I learned to really like that plane. So a new ones waitin for me. Cant wait till next spring.

RE: Sunglasses
I just bought the exact ( I think) glasses as you. Im very light sensitive and have to play around with glasses to get the right vision. Got em today and will hopefully try em out this weekend. I bought happy harrys HD vision glasses, as seen on tv, for 9.99. Work well in bright sunlight. But wanted the options to change lenses. The main prob with our field is a forest at the end of the runway that is far out and can hide your plane on final if your not careful. Hate that. I think the set you bought will be nice. Im gonna keep em in my field box and use my standard sunglasses for driving or whatever.

RE: Sundowner 50 Arf
ORIGINAL: camdyson Similar results with mine - can't get what I'd call fast with the 13" props on the OS 91 FS. I'll try 12" range next, but will have to cut the motor to land, as even idling it goes forever. Cam
My idle is set to 25-2600. It drops in fast but is easy to control. It also slows down nicely on a grass strip. On pavement... [8|] prob would suck. I think the plane is a little heavy as I put a 6v pack behind the wing and that makes for a nice even descent. There is no flare with this plane I just ride the elevator until touchdown. Once I got use to it I dont mind the fast landings at all. The damn thing is hell to taxi though. Any bumps mixed with a cross wind and the things chopping the prop. I also put a slimline pitts style muffler on it. Seems to have lost some low end grunt but the tach still reads 9500 wide open on the ground.

RE: Help ( Ideas ) Finding A Spinner
I believe Tru turn has wide blade spinners that would work. I bought a standard 2" spinner for my sundowner and it wouldnt fir my apc's. I opted for the 2 1/4 ultimate wide blade spinner (tru turn) and my 13X9 fits just fine. I can just barely squeeze a 12x11 into it. I think tru turn can also custom cut you one for what you need. Not sure on the cost though.

RE: Field box with battery, or individual battery powered
With my box set-up I prefer a removable battery. I hook the battery up in my box to the power panel for charging then pull the battery and use the starter clamped directly to the battery. My box is kinda big so I like having plenty of room with the battery off to the side in front of the plane so Im not stretching wires that could possibly end up in the prop. I would like to have a second battery just for the starter but have been to lazy to get one. And I definitely prefer the self powered glow ignitor. But its always nice to have the plug in just in case. oh and I use a 12V 7ah field battery.

RE: Winter Storage
If possible remove the batteries and do maintenance charges while not in use. Depending on what kind it may be just every month. Make sure the tanks are dry and put some after run oil in the glow plug hole and put it back in. Then make sure the carbs closed. Store the planes where it doesnt get to cold/hot or humid and that should be about it. There are more secure ways but I dont think its necessary. But if you have loose engines seal em in a ziplock. when you pull em back out in flying season check all of the fuel lines and fire her up. Oh and make sure your tx isnt dead all winter.

RE: Prop keeps coming off
I made the mistake a few times of thinking "real tight" was tight enough. Just grab that prop (as long as its not a sharp apc) and pull the wrenh and the prop together as tight as you can get it. You using a spinner?

RE: Upgrading on-board batteries on Nitro plane
A good charger does help a lot. I use the triton 2. If you dont feel like buying a field battery to charge just hook it up to your car battery. I did that for a while then got sick of it. Having a field battery makes things so much easier. I got the 7ah 12v battery with charger for like $35 from tower. I charge it occasionally overnight but it has never died on me. Its also great to have a field battery for a starter. It may not fare so well with lipos though.

RE: Upgrading on-board batteries on Nitro plane
Ive been using allbattery batteries on my planes. Very cheap. Like $20 shipped for 2 4.8 nimh 2300mah packs. You can fly or a good while on them. I just bought a couple 6volts from them and have one in my sundowner. No probs yet.

RE: Aileron travel
On my last 2 planes (of 3) I never checked the travel. I just eyeballed what I thought would be good and safe on the low rates and added a lil more on the high rates. If it felt mushy I would adjust accordingly. It may not be the safest way to do it but it seems to work for me.

RE: Sundowner 50 Arf
I know all about scavenging exhaust from my Camaro. I just cant imagine a single cylinder with 2 big outlets is helping much. I dunno. Im still turning the same peak rpms on the ground that I did with the stock muffler. But it may be taking a hit lower in the rpm range. And I have a YS110 and cosmic minnow waiting to be put together. I wouldnt dare try it on the lil downer. I can barely see it as it is. That thing with a YS would disappear in no time. That minnow better get over 100mph.

RE: Sundowner 50 Arf
Thanks mongo. Im turning 9,500 on the ground with the 13x9. I dont think Im getting anywhere near 80mph though. Im thinkin 60 to maybe 70 mph. I know thats a wide range but I "feel" its somewhere in there. If I could pick up the proposed 20mph by dropping to a 12x11 I know it would feel quite a bit faster. Even if im only truely hitting 85. The thing runs great. Im afraid to tune anymore. You can idle all day then jam right to full and no probs. Although Im wondering if that slimline muffler I have on it is hurting some of its grunt. Perhaps llosing back presure with the 2 outlets. One of these days Ill plug one up and see. Im starting to like this plane. I didnt at first. If I cut the throttle a lil I can do nice rolls. If I try em full throttle it kinda snaps through em. It doesnt like to track well in loops. Im fairly certain the lateral balance is a little off. One big plus of this plane is the grey cote on the tips under the wings. They really stand out for some reason. Now how much time are we talking here in relation to going to higher pitched props and acceleration. Is there a general rule saying how long it should take to reach that top speed?

RE: Sundowner 50 Arf
What do you guys think. Im running a 13x9 on a OS 91 surpass 4 stroke. Its ok but should be faster. I was flying with a midget mustang that overall was a bigger plane than the downer. It had a 61 evo 2 stroke and could out accelerate me everytime. But if I stayed into the throttle I would slowly pass. Think a 12x11 would be that big a difference?

RE: 38% Christen Eagle I
I think this is a neat plane. A guy at our field has one around the 70" size and wants to get rid of it. He said it has some sort of echo twin in it. That thing hauls and I really like how easy it is to see. I complain every time I fly now because I cant see my lone sundowner 50. And my eyes arent bad. He says its tricky to land.

RE: What do you know about asphalt?
If your club has boatloads of money than the only way would be to tear the whole thing up. Now I paid 2 grand to have a small area in front of my house aphalted. So a 50x500 runway would cost a fortune. Maybe if everyone in your club sells their plane and puts the money towards the project you would have a nice runway. Just no planes to fly from em...[;)] The cost of building that from scratch would be immense. And add in tearing up the old stuff.... ugg. Pack the cracks a lil high see if you can rent one of those heavy rollers and seal coat the crap out of it. Im on a grass runway. Its well kept. Take-offs arent a prob and Im sure it helps landings for some of those models that dont like to stop. I can virtually bring my sundowner down within 10ft of me.

I tried a few times and this thing doesnt make it easy. Hope to get it out this week and play around some more. And I definitely noticed a loss of dow low grunt with this slim line muffler. Gonna have to play around with it.

RE: "Re"maidened the sundowner today.
Oh and another thing. I cant do my climbing rudder slides. Dont know what to call it. But I could fly straight up, cut the power throw full rudder and kick it straight around and back towards the ground diving and leveling off 30-40 ft in the air. Those were fun. And that was in the minnow. This thing basically justflops back onto itself in no relation to the rudder surface and then starts heading towards the ground. Maybe I can graft another inch of rudder on the thing. [;)]

RE: "Re"maidened the sundowner today.
I cant imaging the engine would make it super heavy. But your right the rudder is tiny. Its not going to have much authority. I should just take it for what it is and fly my circles. But I still think it should be faster. It really does drop fast though. Ill see if I can borrow my friends digi cam soon and get a vid. I can handle the landings I just wasnt prepared for it. For what its worth the people at the field say Im doing well for just starting. They tend to just let me do my thing. And some even want me to fly with them. I have been told several times to ditch these type planes and go for an edge or extra... that Id be better off with a larger aerobatic plane. I know my limits and dont push my flights. I didnt even try inverted flight. Just loops, rolls, and touch and goes. This plane is just a little to hairy for me to try anything else. I need to tach it and play with the settings. I have dubro nitro line on the exhaust pressure line. It may be an optical illusion but the inside diameter looks smaller than my 3/32 line. If you keep the throttle up it does nice banking turns with little input. But drop the rpms and you get a dropper through turns. Ill need to get a vid... Oh and nathan I have my eye on a GP Geebee that may be for sale soon. The owner just wants to pull the motor and I have a OS 1.20 4c sitting in the box. He has trouble landing it and has been flying for many many years. He's not sure if he wants to try again or sell the plane. I do like getting the more difficult planes to fly. I dunno why.

RE: Sundowner 50 Arf
hey russm, I did put the battery behind the servo tray. Balances right around the recc. CG. The first downer I had that only lasted one flight had the battery all in the stock location. I just added 2oz of lead to the tail. It landed easier and that was a dead stick. The slimline pitts is new now. Maybe just the added weight of the pitts, which cant be much, and a 6V pack instead of the 4.8 put it over the edge. I wish I could get a video of it landing.

RE: Anyone make a ARF storch 70" or larger?
Thanks guys. It looks like the Vmar are kits. Dont have time for that. I can barely put together an ARF. The KMP sounds interesting. I know they are putting out good stuff. Im suprised there arent more ARF's available. Its a neat looking plane and it doesnt have to be kitted out as a warbird. Something like this might make a killing in like a plug and play version. Theres plenty of people out there that may want something in the cub style thats not a cub. Ill look into KMP. Generally what would a 80" storch need engine wise. I do have a OS 120 4 stroke waiting for something.

RE: Sundowner 50 Arf
Well I flew my downer with the 91 surpass. It flys like a warbird. Not that fast. Banks and turns fine. But anything else is hairy. And the landing is basically a controlled drop. DOnt need a lot of room. Just keep feeding elevator until it touches down. Ran out of elevator on low rates on my first flight. Luckily it was right near the ground. Its just a little heavy. I added no weight but did put a 6V 2300mah pack in the fuse behind the trailing edge of the wing. It should be faster. Id be ok with poor aerobatics if it was fast but its not there yet. Need to play with props and tuning. The slimline pitts is also new to the engine. So its doable but not sure its worth the effort. That was just the engine I had around to use. At least it flies.
