RE: Which tank is best for my son? Many questions!
I've got a few 1/16 models now and love the scale. Very easy to work on/mod because of the size and there are a lot of add on parts available should you want to tinker with it a bit. I bought a Bulldog for my 6yr old nephew and he loves it. The stock HL guns do not shoot that hard, but be careful with it. Boys will be boys ya know. I've caught him shooting at his friends before. As said previously, the 1/16 run great outside, where the VS lack a bit because of their smaller weight/size. Heng Long quality has greatly improved in the past couple years, and I don't recall reading about anyone blowing a electronic board lately unless they were doing a mod, or Swaths Sherman when it got a piece of mulch wedged in the roadwheels and he kept driving it. If you add metal tracks, consider a small cooling fan to keep it from overheating because of the added weight. I haven't heard much good about Raidentech or Banana Hobby [I believe they are the same company]. I bought a Tiger from them and got an old model with the old RX13 board [more prone to blowing than the RX14 or new RX18 boards] and the radio transmitter didn't work. There was just a nightmare experience thread posted on this forum a few weeks ago. You can't go wrong with RCTankWars or RCCommand. Oh, the only real problem with the Bulldog is that it is a bit light in the front, and when driving on tall grass it looks like it popping a wheelie. Easy fix with some lead sinkers superglued in the front end, or as recently suggested. using the adhesive tire balancing weights. Enjoy and welcome to the forum. Another suggestion... go ahead and order one for yourself too. It'll help prevent your son crying because you won't give him a turn... very addictive hobby!! [:D]

RE: ASIATAM TIGER 1 HULL. Who has one?????
As TJM states, stiff suspension and rides a bit high. The idler adjusters help a bit in lowering it to a more accurate height, and as some think, perhaps in time the torsion bars will relax. I believe that the Tamiya torsion bars may be adjustable, whereas the Asiatam are not. They do have optional torsion bars from what I have read, but I believe that some have stated that they are too loose... in the pic the dark yellow lower is the Asiatam hull with metal wheels, metal tracks, and a 3600 mAh battery installed... I don't think you'll be disappointed with either...I love the weight. It'll climb over anything!! [:D]

RE: Asiatam Gearbox in a Matorro King Tiger
Hey Otto... I was just re=reading this thread and noticed that your gearboxes appear to be missing something. One thing I noticed on your geraboxes is the length of the shaft going to the front drive sprocket and I see that as a possible weak point with metal sprockets and tracks... if you loook at the Mato picture you will see that there is a piece screwed down on each gearbox that would probably give some support to the shaft... your doesn't have this.

I know the late model idlers are smaller, but I'm not sure if these are late model or not. Mato has these... might work on the Tamiya. Mato also sell them on eBay http://matomart.com/prodview.php?p=156

RE: I made a list...can you check it twice?
Yeah, I think they are fine. The rear idler also sits a bit high, but you can adjust that. The Asiatam hull price seems a bit steep, but you have to consider all of the metal extras that come with it. Well worth the cost, and even if the torsion bars don't lighten up its still fine as it is.

RE: I made a list...can you check it twice?
[quote]ORIGINAL: Perry S. hmmmm, So what's the total cost for all that? Might just want to get a FO Tamiya. [/quote] Very true Perry, and I've thought about that as the parts and bits were ordered - I need to sit down and add everything up one of these days [when the wife isn't around!]. I guess the advantages for me to a HL rebuild over the Tamiya is you don't have the initial cost of the kit all at the same time, you can add and modify as time and budget allows, and have a running tank during the conversion. Plus, like you, I am an airsoft shooter and I don't think I've ever seen a Tamiya converted to airsoft. Is that even possible? I've got a Creeping Death turret on one, a ThomasJohnMurphy conversion in the other, and am not sure what to do with the KT when it gets here. Hopefully Creeping Death is close to release of their new system and it will fit in the KT. Last I heard they were still working with the attorneys with the legal/copywrite stuff... The Tamiya suspension is also superior to the Asiatam from what I've seen. The Asiatam is pretty stiff, torsion bars aren't adjustable and it rides a bit high even with the adjusters turned all the way down

Totally Fed Up!
I am so tired of this garbage I could scream! I don't even have my King Tiger in hand yet, the Tiger late model rebuild is stalled...and now they are coming out with the new Panther! [:@] So now I've got two Tigers and a King Tiger, but I've always loved the Panther... heck, that PZ IV ausf F2 looks pretty darn cool too. Oh, and my first tank with the Creeping Death turret I just painted gray and slapped a late model cupola on it is bugging me because of it's inaccuracies, so I guess I'll have to sink another $200 in bits to fix it up as well. The Panther is a must have and going on the Christmas list... where does it all end!!? Thank God that I'm not into allied tanks... although that half track is pretty darn cool too, but you would need a Sherman to run along with it... and I still haven't been able to acquire a RC Kubelwagen at a decent price yet.. There are no clubs in my area... can I just put the same frequency crystal in all of them since Phil converter the KT to HL guts and run them all from the same radio? I might have to try that!! [:D] Search old threads and I believe you'll find me saying that I just needed one to play around with in the back yard and I'd be happy... yeah, right! Great hobby ~ I'll be in divorce court by the end of 2010. Thanks a lot Bill, Phil, and everyone on this forum... [:D] [size=1]There, I feel better now. Off to work![/size]

RE: I made a list...can you check it twice?
Don't forget the C hooks [one on the back and one up front on top], tool set, fire extinguisher, and spare tracks on the sides of the turret... and with all that weight a fan to cool the electronics is a must have or you'll blow your circuit board!! RC Command has some for a few bucks, but I took a recommendation here and got a Novak 5v fan on eBay for a couple extra bucks... they are real small and will fit just about anywhere. Here's some pics of mine [still not finished] showing the Novak fan and some that I've saved showing the late Tiger tool positioning. There was also a vent cover where the air filters connected on the early models. I've only seen these on eBay [$8 + $8 shipping from Europe somewhere]. Pretty simple so I just made one out of sheet styrene... [The 2nd and 3rd pics aren't mine but ones that I saved because they show the tool arrangement well] I believe it is a Tamiya build. The 3rd pic also shows the top of the turret and how the pieces are positioned. I think the close defense port is incorrect though. Look at the pic of the real Tiger and it looks closer to the loaders hatch. Here's a link to the fan I used... 25x25x10mm http://cgi.ebay.com/Novak-25x25x10mm-5V-Cooling-Fan-NOV5647_W0QQitemZ350272503858QQcmdZViewItemQQptZRadio_Control_Parts_Accessories?hash=item518dde4032

Otto... did Phil install the tensioner for you or did you put it in? This project cost a bit more than planned or I would have had him do it for me. If it's not to much of a job I may give it a try down the road. Also, do you think it's worth the cost/does it help much? Phil said the tracks are a bit loose, but when a link was removed they were too tight and to remove one when they stretch out a bit. Phil, your thoughts since you'll probably read this... do I need one?

Blitz, "this design does use the standard size motor" - does that mean that you can keep the Matorro electronics with the upgrade to these gearboxes and run with metal tracks?

RE: New here
Welcome Yellow... you'll love the Tiger! Lots of mod possibilities. Depending on what you want to spend, the Asiatam metal hull is a worthwhile investment. Comes with lots of other metal parts and really beefs up the Tiger. Check out RC Command. Bill's a great guy and has lots of Tiger extras... http://www.rccommand.com/ I've got two and am totally rebuilding one to be a late model Tiger, and a King Tiger on the way. Here's some of the stuff I started with, and metal tracks are a big improvement and add a good amount of weight to the tank. Mines not finished yet, but sitting at about 12 pounds with the metal hull, wheels, etc. If you go heavy, a cooling fan is a must or you'll overheat and blow the electronics. Use the search box at the bottom of the page - there is a ton of information hidden within this forum. If you can't find an answer just ask - someone knows the answer and will help you out. They are fun to play with, and inexpensive to fix if something goes wrong. Enjoy the Tiger and welcome to the forum! Ernie

RE: The Shermans are in at Mato
Not taking anything away from it's accomplishments or the modeling possibilities of the M4, but I've never been much of a Sherman fan. I'm sorry to hear so much disappointment from those of you that have waited for the so long for the release. Wasn't there talk of another Sherman release from another company? Also, just out of curiosity, is Matotoys the same as Matorro? I thought I read in previous posts that Matorro had nothing to do with this project. Just trying to get my names straight, although I believe that I've read that factories are possibly shared, etc.

Is that a TOW Don? That was my old MOS in the army in the 80's. I only got one live fire at a shell of a tank on a range. [:o] Needless to say, there were no secondary explosions as in this video, but it is an impressive weapon. Thanks for sharing. When I had my live fire my platoon sergeant told me he had one with a tank with full complement of ammunition and a half tank of fuel. I always wondered what it looked like!

Enjoy it Blake and welcome to the forum! What tank are you going to get next? Don't say, "This is it" because it will never happen! Once you start playing and adding metal bits and tracks you'll be hooked! I've got two Tigers [one undegoing a full metal, late model transformation] and a King Tiger on the way from The Blitz any day now. Is it for airsoft shooting or are you going to get into IR battling? Don't worry about the wife... they all think we're dorks I believe [although you will see a few in pictures at IR battle days]. Mine just rolled her eyes when I got my first and said she was going to dig out her Barbies. I posted her comments and someone told me to help her get them out... and use them for targets!! Ernie
