I managed to snag that ebay sale. I plan to create a template of the wood parts and a list of all the other parts hopefully with replacement parts where needed. I will build it from the templates to see that it works before building using original parts unless keeping the kit as is would be a better idea. It will take some time so I will keep in touch with this site from time to time with progress. I figured if I could get the kit I would do more than build it and prepare plans, instructions, templates and parts list where as someone else would just build it and no one else would benefit from it. I hope this works out.

I am working on one myself. My questions are to the connecting of the electronics. Not many "keyed" connectors and there are 5 wires on the speed controller. Is there anywhere to get an explanation on what signals are on these wires and a chart how-to on connecting the correct wires to each other?

A little known, but great company is Fun Aero: http://www.funaero.com/ I believe that the only 1/4 scale WWI kit they have right now is the SE5a. They have some smaller Albatros kits, and I've been hoping that they would do a 1/4 scale version of one of them. Their kits go together well, and fly great. Another great company is Flair, but they are a British company, and their kits are a little hard to come by sometimes. I've got one of their 1/4 scale DR1s, but I think they have other 1/4 scale WWI kits.

Fiberglass Specialties Inc: http://www.fiberglassspecialtiesinc.com/ is a good source. The make nice cowls with few pin holes. I know that I've gotten cowls for the Carl Goldberg cub from them in the past. I think they have the cowls with and without the dummy engine, and enlongated for 4-cycle engines.

Need Plane for 1.60 Twin Engine (No Cubs Please)
I usually pick a scale airplane that catches my fancy and then shop for the approptiate engine. This time I'm doing it the other way around. I picked up a new Magnum 1.60 twin engine for too good a price to pass up and now I'm looking for a scale project to put around it. I know that a cub is going to be an obvious answer, but I alread have 2 cubs and don't won't to build

Hi Bill, That 160 twin looks like a perfect fit. Now you got me thinking I might want to try one in mine. I had planned to power mine with a Saito 120 or possibly a 150 which I have on hand, but I really like the looks of that 160, and the fact that you don't have to cut a hole in the cowl... great, it didn't have much power. I got real good doing dead stick landings with that engine.

In summary, according to my plans: Using Incidence Meter (center of LE and TE): Top -2, Bottom -1, Stab +2 Using Flat portion of Wings as drawn on plan: Top 0, Bottom 0, Stab +2 NOTE: On the 1/5 scale Pica WACO plans it states the incidence as 0 for both top and bottom wings and +2 degrees for the stab. Using the flat portion of the wings as your reference line this would give the same numbers for the 1/6 scale WACO. I hope I’m not confusing everyone.

The CG is 4.5" back from the LE of the top wing. There is no mention of incidence angles that I can find on the plans or manual (but I took only a quick look). It seems like the incidence was set with a jig for the top wing, and the bottom wing was pretty much locked in by the wing saddle. My plans are pretty damaged, but from what I can tell the top wing is has 0.5 - 1 degrees of positive, and the bottom wing has 0 degrees using the flat bottom portion of the wing as a reference line. The stab probably has at least 2 degrees positive. I would bet that someone out there can give you more accurate numbers. If not, let me know and I'll try to get more accurate measurments.

There is a short manual in my kit. It is only 13 pages long, so it may not be all that helpful. I also have this kit, but it will be a while before I build it. I'm not sure if this is the actual manual or some type of brief overview. What I have is definitely not 60 pages. If you would like, I could scan what I have and email you guys a copy. Let me know if you want one. Oops! After re-reading the above posts, I saw that Bill was talking about the WACO, and that is the kit that has the 13 page manual. I also have a 1/6 scale Pica Mustang kit, and that one does have a much more detalied manual that is probably 60 pages or more. I do not know whether it would apply to the 1/5 scale Mustang. Here is a photo of my second Pica Waco. I have built 2 of the 1/6 scale ones. This 2nd kit I converted to the ZPF version of the plane which has a closed 2nd cockpit with the 1st one left open:

I'm late to the Tantrum party, but when I saw RVators post I had to respond. Great minds must think alike, cause we both used similar color schemes for our Tantrums: I used a Himax 2015-4100 in a GWS 6.6:1 gear box with a 12X6 prop in my first Tantrum. It flew great unitl I nailed a light pole trying to land in a parking lot. I liked the plane so much I built another one. I used the Himax 2812-0850 outrunner in that one. It was also a good motor for the Tantrum, but not quite as much zip as I had with the gearbox and 4100 setup. Either one will work nicely.

The Balsa USA stearman would be nice, but it is just too big for me. Nick Ziroli Sr. emailed me that although he didn't initially think that the large stearman would fly on a 3 cu.in. engine, he had actually seen the large stearman fly very well with the OS radial at a meet he attended. I bet... for a steal, but haven't had a chance to use it. I think now that I will put it on the front end

Stearman65 thanks for the information. You confirmed my suspicions about Flair. I will probably go with the Ziroli stearman. In fact, I think I already have a set of plans for that one around here somewhere. The Bob Dively kit would be nice, but too big and too heavy for me. One nice thing about the Flair stearman was its light weight. Flair kits tend to be light and good flyers. I still have an unbuilt Flair DR 1 triplane on the shelf. Ziroli's stearman is a good flier, but considerably heavier than the Flair (32-35 pounds versus 20-25 pounds). Does anyone know if an OS FR5-300 radial engine would fly the 87" Ziroli stearman? Thanks!

I don't think the E-flite motors are a rip off of the HiMaxx. I think they are the HiMaxx motors in a different wrapper. There is actually at least 1 other company putting their name on these motors which are all manufactured in the same factory (in China I think). I've run my HiMaxx 5400 with the 6.6:1 GWS gearbox with NiMh cells, but it pulls too many amps for my 1500 Kokam Lipos

I would definitely recommend covering the whole thing all the way to the firewall. Otherwise you would have to glass the front and paint. A finished fabric covering like Solartex (Worldtex, Colortex) would be easy, and really looks better than plastic on this bird. I agree with Les that this plane begs for a 4 stroke as do most biplanes (this is a nice project for a 91 4 stroke, or the Saito 100, or even an old used 1.20 that you could find fairly cheap). A 4 stroke lets you swing a larger prop which helps the prop clear that wide nose. I suspect you could fly it on a 2 stroke, but it would be harder for me to pick one. I think a 60 would be too small (at least for the way I like to fly). Maybe a 90? Les also brought up a good point about lightening the tail. If you can, I'd recommend lightening the tail as much as possible before covering. An ounce saved in the tail, probably equals 5 or 6 ounces saved in nose weight on this plane. As for the hinges, I thought you meant they had a pin through the hinge line. If I'm reading you right someone built the plane then permanently hinged the control surfaces before covering. If this is the case, I'd recommend cutting the hinges, covering then re-hinging the surfaces. It will save you time in the long run. You could use Robart Hinge points, hinge next to the existing hinges, or remove the existing hinges and re-hinge in the same location. I also recommend the Robart Struts for this plane. Really cool. My photos show the Robart plastic strut covers, but I later added the real stuts to my plane also.

You are safe to charge them with the "I" and "C" programs on the Alpha 4. Stay away from the "A" and "S" programs. See the FAQ section on the Litco web site for more info. I'm using my Alpha 4 to charge 8 cell NiMh packs with no problems so far.

I've done it with solartex fabric on a DR 1 triplane. I used a good coat of Balsarite on the ribs to help with adhesion. To apply I heated the fabric and quickly followed with cool/wet cloth pushing fabric down to ribs. It has stayed in place well. I find the fabric much easier to work with than film, so I don't know whether this technique would work as well with film. I suspect

I've used one on an inverted Enya 90. It seemed a little louder than the stock muffler, but I didn't actually measure the db level. If yours goes together like mine, you can expect some leakage around the edges. Mine was inside a cowl, so I could never see just how much, but I know it leaked some. I eventually put a bead of high temperature silicone around the joint which seemed to help.
