RE: Jetpower 2012
Hi Andrew, Thanks for the reply. I figured it was AW, just surprised to see one fly. The kits been out for years but no models were ever completed and flown except the prototype. I've been in contact over the years with many modelers in the UK and other places and they all said the same thing: the kit is a mess and it's unbuildable. There was also issues with the availability of the landing gears and wheels. Too bad because the Lightning is one of my favorite planes and would really like to build one. Thanks, Jon

RE: Top Flite Redbox P-51
The Red Box P-51 was designed by Dave Platt when he started to work for Top Flite, it was his first design for them. Several months later a conversion kit was released that you could convert the B model to a D. It had a bubble canopy and several fuse formers and instructions. He did the P-51, P-40 and P-39 (people wanted a nose gear model) and the SE-5A before he left to form his own company. The early SE-5A kits came with the plans pre-waxed so you didn't have to use wax paper. BRG, Jon

RE: Decal maker
I've never found anyone in the states that can do a decend job. Lots of stickers, but no real decals. Someone makes some transfers, but they cost a fortune by the time you pay for artwork, layout, etc. I use Ralle at Taylormade decals in Germany. Great service, does custom jobs at reasonable prices.

Order from Skymaster direct, forget BVM. I always got a reply within 12 hours, parts were shipped within a week.

Culver Dart, 1st place in Designer Scale. Model is scratched built, no plastic or fiberglass, all wood, including cowl and wheel pants. Model is 28 years old, orginally powered by a Quadra 50. Retired for 20 years, brought down from the attic, cleaned up and re-engined with an electric power system. Had pictures of it at the 25th Toledo show, this one was the 58th show!

RE: Hostetler Lancair ES Build with retracts.
Hi, I'm surprised no one has posted about the purpose of tabs on the wing ribs. Their purpose is to ensure the correct alignment of the wing and to set the washout. The tabs get pinned/glued to the building board when laying out the wing. Doing it by "eye" is a risky proposition, especially trying to make sure both wings are identical. If they're off even by 2 degrees, you'll have a lousy flying model. Check the washout on the wing you finished and set the other to the same angle. The washout may be wrong from what the designer intended but at least both wings will be the same. BRG, Jon

MIDO A-10 stab fairing
Hi, I'm finishing up my A-10 and have a question about the stab fairing. There's a lip molded into the rear of the fairing that I thought would go under the skin of the rear fuse. However, it seems to me if you cut out the rear of the fuse so the fairing will slide in, the rear of the fuse will be weakened and likely to crack. So, I'm not sure what to do: they took the time and effort to mold in the lip, so there's a reason it's there, I just don't want to cut the fuse if I don't have to. Thanks, Jon

RE: Florida jets 2012.. Are we there yet?
Tom, I guess I'm in with you guys since I agreed with Craig. Let's see what me, a scum bag, has done to deserve the name: Been in the hobby for over 60 years, built everything from microfilm to turbine's. Was a gunner on AC-47's, served in Nam '68-69, our plane saved countless grunts so they could make it back to the world. For three years printed membership badges for the JPO at no cost to JPO. Bought a radar gun for the JPO to measure model speeds. Not blowing my own horn, but I'm not gonna sit here and and be called names by some guy who doesn't know anything about me. And yes, at 68, I still enjoy looking at women! TS if you don't like it! BRG, Jon

RE: NJ WRAM Show, Anyone goes ?
Hi Marty, It's just that times have changed. Thursday is setup day, so any manufacturer traveling any distance would have to be there Wednesday, which means 4 nights in a motel. That, along with food, local travel and the time away from the business, along with the expense of traveling just isn't worth it in todays economy. Most of the dealers have had to cut back, so they're concentrating on the Toledo show, if they go to shows at all. Nothing to do with the WRAMS or the location. BRG, Jon

RE: NJ WRAM Show, Anyone goes ?
Hi Mark, Yup, those were the days! Remember when Byron had the whole row next to the stage, Hazel Sig on her people mover, even BVM was there one year. I remember trying to get a ticket from the hooby shop for dealer day because you could actually move around and see stuff and talk to the various reps. My friend Fred and I, along with our wives would make a day of it. The girls would sit in the stands and talk and talk while we walked around. We'd then get some Nathan's hot dogs and BS with friends. We'd take another walk with the girls, explaining the prices at the show were list prices, not what we pay, of course they didn't believe a word! I was so blessed to have had a wife that not only put up with me and the hobby, but encouraged me. She went to the fun flys like Delaware and Binghamton, always looking forward to getting a way for 3 days and setting up our little house (tent). Then, after it closed we'd go this Italian Resturant up the road for dinner. All and all, a great day! It's geared more to the public rather than modelers as it mostly is just hobby shops and electronic stuff like extension cords, etc. Fred and I are going to Toledo this year, we go about once every three years. RE: NJ WRAM Show, Anyone goes ?
It's going to have a different feel this year. Unlike the County Center, there's no balcony or place to sit down and BS with friends and make a day of it. The Meadowlands is an exposition center where the have computer shows, train shows, etc, it's just a really large room. I heard they moved it because the reduction of the vendors, remember when the main floor and the basement was full of vendors, and declining attendance reduced revenues a lot. Because the cost of the County Center is so high, they had to find another location. Since it's only 10 miles from home, I'll go but probably this will be the last time. Too bad, it was the unofficial start of the season. BRG, Jon

RE: FAA
I would think that if the FAA did not want this provision in the bill, they're powerful enough to make a few well placed phone calls to various members of congress and it would have gone away. The fact that they didn't seems to bode well for us. Jon

Nothing personal, but I'm curious, why are you so against this bill? Everyone but you seems happy about it, yet you seem to read in all sorts of doom and gloom about it. I know the FAA controls airspace, your point is? To answer your question in the above post, it seems just you are interested. Regards, Jon

Painting aluminum landing gear
Hi everyone, My friend, who owns an auto body shop, is trying to paint my landing gear from a SM F-16. He uses Dupont, obviously he degreased everything, primed it, not sure what products he used. Some parts come out fine, others have spots similar to fish eye, almost like there's silicone or something on the surface. I was wondering what products people are using and the steps necessary to get a nice paint job. Thanks, Jon

RE: Century Jets F-106 Delta Dart
You'd might be better off trying to find an Usher kit of the SIX. It's a basic kit that started out as a DF but was converted to a P-120 size turbine power. The late Rich Fong had a couple of articles in RCJI around 1999 about the modifacations he made to the kit. Also, Mike Lescher built and flew one. BRG, Jon

Bob Levine had one of those "guns" in his A-10. It took up almost all the space in the nose and looked heavy. I never saw it operate and I'm not sure if he ever fired it, but it looked pretty neat. Jon
