Sounds like P4Patti is full of BS. They do not want to finish it, yet they do not want to sell it. What purpose would they have for wanting to keep it?...memories? That's the problem with these one off offers from people. Jeff

RE: Newly available all composite 1/6 scale P-47 semi-ARF kit
Casey, I have seen and flown Jeff's prototype P-47, and I can tell you that a G-62 is WAY overkill. A G-45 will be a perfect motor for this plane, as it is in a Yellow P-47 (they are of the same size). Even at 30 pounds a G-45 would be perfect. I used the Airtronics RDS8000 for the first time this past summer in both magneto and ei engines. Worked flawlessly in both. Yes, I was plenty nervous in the beginning, but I am a firm 2.4 believer now. Jeff

RE: DA-150 power?
I have no experience with the radials, just have heard that they are high maintenance. The DA will be a low maintenance tank...I know that. I have a 10 year old 3W120 that has been bullet proof. I'd go with the 150 for cost and ease of mainteance. However, I am not a fan of the radials. Unlike most, I do not think they sound anything like a real radial....they sound like a loud 4-stroke single cylinder to me. They do sound good, but nothing like a real radial as many proclaim. I like the noise of the twins. Actually, the best sound I ever heard was the 4 cylinder with cans in Manny's big P-47 in Deleware. I hope I don't get flammed[:@] Jeff

RE: DA-150 power?
Here's a link to the P-47 with 5h3 150 in it. This was the maiden. It was built by Jim Greenly, a very good friend of mine, but I own it now. I was his pilot for all his gorgeous warbirds. http://www.mnbigbirds.com/P47%20Video%20Page.htm Jeff

RE: DA-150 power?
Laughable....yes, Ha-Ha...300cc is WAY overkill Dick......a 150 is plenty. We're not building top fuelers. You've never seen my P-47 GO VERTICAL, so come watch if you like[8|]. Plus, if you're gonna spend $3-4K for a motor, why not install a radial. Jeff

RE: pica 1/5 spitfire problems
I really think you are looking at around $350 to get just the Pica kit. By the time you buy gear and spinner, you are probably looking at around $600 maybe. Jeff

RE: pica 1/5 spitfire problems
I live in MN, and am very close. If you are interested, I have a complete Yellow Spitfire kit, retracts included, I will sell for $750. That includes the complete kit, tailwheel retract, main retracts, flying spinner and static blade spinner/propellers. I do not have the wheels or front cannons. I am not really looking to put up for sale, but if you are interested, I will make you this sweet deal as I just picked up the composite Spitfire kit. I also already have a flying Yellow Spit, as well as a 12 foot Spit in the finishing stage.....3 should be plenty for me[8D] Jeff

RE: RC Scale All Composite Corsair
Agree...too pricey at almost $2800 with shipping. For the cost, no surface detailing of any kind. Compare that to a CompARF kit of a bigger wingspan and nice surface detail for under $2K.

Barry, nothing wrong with using bolts over a dowel, or a combination, it's just not what I prefer, and the dowels work good. JEff

RE: fiberglass help
You will not want to glass this. Use some fabric covering such as Solartex, or 21st century. Glass will not taughten up and will be saggy. You need something that will shrink across the open bays. The basic mustang rudder was a fabric covered component. Jeff

RE: Hostetler Curtiss Hawk P6E
ORIGINAL: Chip_Mull As a vendor and a long time acquaintance I will say that Wendell is a good guy. I will also say that you would NOT believe some of the questions we get. Before completely giving up on one of the few kit suppliers left I would have to say maybe Wendell was having a bad day. Sometimes what is intuitively obvious to the designer is completely lost on my little brain.
As a designer and supplier of plans, NO question should be turned away or considered "stupid" or "annoying", altho I am sure some may seem this way. I have had similar experiences with another well known designer, and it is not pleasant or acceptable. I have been building for 25 years, but questions do some up or something just does not make sense. This bad customer relation thing could cost the hobby another fine scratch builder, which we are in short supply of these days. Nick Ziroli, David P. Andersen, Dino DiGiorgio, Ty Brown and Greg Namey are a few classy examples of designer/suppliers that make themselves available to provide any and all help, and with great attitudes. I am sure there are more, but I know of more than a couple that do not fit this mold.

RE: Just got my new 110 in Zero kit offered by Ty Brown
Ok, back to the surf board wing Doug[:D]. The sheeting is all completed and the ailerons and flaps are fitted. Here I have glassed the top of the wing with 1.5 oz. cloth. I glass with Envirotex, thinned 100% with Acetone or denatured alcohol. It is brushed on like water. I prefer not to use the thick resin with squeegee or toilet paper dabbing techniques...make a mess. One problem I always did have was trying to see where all I had hit the resin with, and where I missed. A friend of mine gave me a good tip. Here you can see I added some green dye to the mix. This allows mee to see exactly where I have applied it and where I have missed. Ensures a nice coating. Jeff

RE: Ziroli 124
I always use dowels, and it does not present a problem. The key is using the correct size. On my 13 foot Corsair, I used a 7/8 inch dowel on the leading center with a 5/8 inch on each side of that. Two 1/4 bolts in the rear were used. Everyone has their preferred method, but on a plane up to around 60 pounds, I will typically use two 5/8 inch dowels as Dave mentions. Especially on the Corsair, getting 2 bolts in the front, with that raked wing angle, may prove difficult to align. I prefer a dowels in the front. That gives me 2 different angles to support the wing. I prefer this over "hanging" the wing from the fuselage with 4 bolts. My .02 Jeff

RE: Just got my new 110 in Zero kit offered by Ty Brown
Notice.....I never answered Phil [:D] OK, so it is early October, 2009, and we have 3 inches of snow on the ground. I have packed away all of my planes for the flying season and am back to building. I have gotten back to the Zero for now. Trying to finish up my wing so I can start Phil's while I finish up the 12 foot Spitfire I have been on for way too long. Here is the gear fitted to the wing and the sheeting cleared for the strut leg and the 5.5 inch tire. The other 2 pictures show how I built the wingtip up with a center balsa core and false ribs with sheeting over the top. This is lighter and easier than carving a big balsa block. Jeff
