RE: NEW DLE 20cc Gasser! (Data & Links 1st Post)
Didn't think it would run with the choke "ON" Mine takes about 10 - 12 flips with the choke "ON" before it pops and then 2 - 3 flips choke "OFF" before it runs. Was just wondering if anyone had a "special" method to save my arm [:D]

Hi Guys I have a question on the DLE 20. Mine runs great, good idle, transition and top end, but it's a bit sluggish to start first time of the day. What's your preferred method of starting this one? Choke position, throttle position etc. Thanks

Hi John If you want to quiet it down try here http://www.gashanger.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=68&Itemid=75 A bit expensive and you will loose about 300 RPM but it does work. Falcon

RE: NEW DLE 20cc Gasser! (Data & Links 1st Post)
Hi Guys Thanks for all the information you have posted, but I think I need to clarify a couple of points. I'm sure that the sensor fitted to the engine is in good condition and will get the engine running. Also I know how to use the RCXL tester unit correctly although the instructions are not that helpful. The real issue is that if you read the Hobbico manual for the DLE 20 it states the timing to be 38-40 degrees BTDC. Using the tester I'm getting about 38, which I believe is correct if using the original #4 ignition unit. However I've swopped that one out for the unit more commonly used on the DLE 55 where the timing is 28 degrees BTDC. My question therefore is should I leave the timing at 38 degrees or change to 28 degrees. Thanks for your patience. Falcon

Thanks w8ye. I'm OK on the method, just need to know if I need to re time it to 28 degrees with the standard (not the No4) ignition, and will I need to use the new sensor and adjustable bracket. Thanks Falcon

RE: NEW DLE 20cc Gasser! (Data & Links 1st Post)
Hi Guys I would like to ask one more question. I have replaced the ignition unit to the rcexl one without the funny advance. On checking the timing with the rcexl ignition tester I get around 36-38 degrees. I don't think the original sensor will give me enough movement to change that by much. Will I need to fit the new sensor that came with the ignition unit and set it at 28 degrees. Thanks Falcon

RE: Engine Placement
Hi Guys Looking at the old thread on this plane there's no side or down thrust built into the firewall. Many people who have flown it say it doesn't like any down thrust but it does need the side thrust and I have accommodated for this by moving the engine over to the left and fitting a couple of washers on the left side of the mount. Capt Crash I like your idea of using the original bolt holes to see where I'm at, I can probably use a paper template to do that. Thanks Don

RE: Engine Placement
Well I'm not going to do it unless I have to. If my method of positioning the engine is correct, then it's already in the right place. The Pitts will fit where the engine already is. It's only going to be a problem if my method is wrong and I have to move the engine up to get the thrust line correct. So can anyone confirm that my method of measuring the fire wall is correct ?? Thanks

RE: Engine Placement
I’m still not convinced I’m doing the right thing with this. If I give you some more detail you might understand my problem. This plane was designed for a 90 size glow engine. The fire wall is pre drilled for a beam mount set at 270 degrees around to the right presumably to allow the muffler to exit out the bottom of the plane. The DLE is also a beam mount but I decided to use the more common inverted mount system for a gas engine. So this is what I did: I measured the fire wall and marked the horizontal and vertical centre lines. The mount on the DLE is central to the prop driver so I placed the engine mount on the horizontal line but moved it over to the left to take account of the right thrust. So from my point of view the engine is in the correct place, please correct me if I’m wrong. Now the problem comes when I put the cowl on. If I line up the cowl so that it’s sitting nice and square on the fuse and all the stripes line up etc it looks like the engine is too low. If I reposition the cowl so that it lines up with the spinner it looks a real mess. So is my way to position the engine all wrong and do I raise the engine so that the cowl looks real nice, or do I put up with the cowl being ugly? Sorry to take a second bite at this but I need your help. I hope you guys can help Thanks

RE: Engine Placement
I've just taken another look at it and by using the DLE muffler everything fits and I can move the engine up to the specified place with just a small mod to the cowl. Thanks Don

RE: Engine Placement
Hi Guys Thanks for the advice. To be honest I'm not too keen on cutting the corner of the engine box. It's probably easier for me to ditch the Pitts muffler and use the standard DLE one. Anyone want to buy a Pitts muffler for a DLE 20 [8|] Thanks Don

Engine Placement
Hi Guys I’m putting together a Seagull Edge 540 and will be using a DLE 20. I want to use a wrap around Pitts muffler which is causing me a problem. I can’t set the engine at the specified place because the can of the muffler is touching the front edge of the engine box. This means that the engine will have to be set about 3/16 of an inch below the correct place. I’m not too concerned if the cowl doesn’t look quite right, but I would appreciate your thoughts on what, if any effects this might have on how it will fly. Thanks Don

Idle problem
Hi Guys I’ve been having a lot of problems tuning my RCGF45 it’s just never run the way it should. I’ve now replaced the Chinese carb for a genuine Walbro and it’s running much better. I’m getting 7500/7600 on a Menz 20X8 a significant improvement from before. However, I still have one annoying little problem with the idle. After a W.O.T. run when I return the stick to idle it settles at about 2600 for about 10 seconds before it will return to the normal idle of 1800. I am quite new to gas so any advice would be appreciated. Thanks Falcon

RE: Throttle curve
Hi Guys Thanks for the info so far. Something I should mention I already have a good geometry on the throttle linkage, I have a long arm on the carb short arm on the servo with well over 100% throw. The problem is that I get max revs with the carb butterfly at about ¾ open and no further increase in RPM when the butterfly is fully open. I guess this is more to do with how the cheap Walbro copy works than the throttle linkage itself. Thanks for the photos, that's pretty much what I’ve done on the Aurora and will now have to fly it and fine tune it as necessary. Thanks

RE: RCGF Engines
Hi Captmicom Thanks for the info on the carbs, do you have any idea why the idle won't stay steady at a constant RPM it doesn't sound rough and if I raise it to a high idle say 2400 it will settle and stay there? Thanks

RE: RCGF Engines
I bought the Rcexel timing tool and made sure that was OK before I even started it first time, it was set 28 - 30 degrees. Price is always an issue unfortunately, at least that's what my wife says and the DLE carb is probably easier to get here in the UK. Thanks

Throttle curve
I’ve done quite a good job of setting up my throttle linkage, equal throw on the servo but I’m getting full RPM on about ¾ stick movement and would like to set up a throttle curve. The programming bit is easy on my Aurora transmitter but I’d like to know how you would relate stick position to RPM. If for example idle was 1800 and max was 6800, that’s 5000 RPM difference would you set ¼ stick to ¼ RPM (3050) and ½ stick to ½ RPM (4300) and so on, or would that be way too linear. Thanks

RE: RCGF Engines
Guys, a couple of pages back I was looking for some advice on tuning the RCGF45. I’d like to give you an update and ask another question. I got out to the field yesterday and worked on it a lot more and this is where I’m at. I got the max revs up by about 200 (6400) or so, but idle and transition needs more work. Idle is at 1800 but after about 10 seconds it drops to 1500 stays there for a few seconds and then goes back up to 1800. It will continue to do this no matter how long I leave it at idle. Also after an extended idle, over a minute, if I slam the throttle open I get a slight hesitation somewhere in the mid range before I get full revs. It’s not like it’s bogging down, coughing and sputtering and it doesn’t quit but it’s not giving me full confidence either. One other question, I noticed someone suggested the direct replacement WALBRO carb was the HDA-48 and another suggested the DLE 50/55 carb would do the trick, if I were to change the carb, which do you think would be the best choice. Thanks

Hey Captmicon Not to worry I know it can be difficult to keep track of all these posts 223 pages WOW I was hoping to get out to the field today to play with those needles again but it's raining and blowing way too much so it will have to wait. I'll let you know next time I get a chance to work on it. Falcon

RE: RCGF Engines
Captmicom Please excuse my ignorance but I'm not familiar with the term "S&G" , and if you don't mind me asking, why would I buy two? If the DLE carb will work then that will solve the problem, if it doesn't work, what would be the point of having two? I'm sure you have a common sense reason for your suggestions, it's just that my "older" brain can't figure it out :) Falcon
