RE: DHC-2 Need help identifying manufacturer
Unionville Hobby in Canada [no website to my amazement] has a number of De Havilland kits in various models and sizes [Otter, Beaver etc.] I have a large Otter that was built from one of their kits by somebody many years ago and since I needed a cowl, I called them. They can be reached at 905-640 1534. I was sent a brochure with the cowl, showing the kits, with some pictures of the finished product. Give it a try.

Here's a copy of an -mail from SIG after I had sent pictures of the wing folding event with my Kadet Sr. ARF . Needless to say, I think that this is a company that is worth doing business with: Quote: Original Message: - From: Bob Nelson bobnelson@sigmfg.com Date: Mon, 25 Aug 2008 16:06:20 -0500 To: ccnh2@borg.com Subject: Re: Kadet Sr Wingfolding Hi Herman, A replacement for your airplane was sent out today. RE: Sig Kadet Senior Weight
In my immediate past I have had 3 Kadet Sr. : 1st: a 20 year old Kadet Sr flown with rudder [without ailerons], which had a .46 glow engine, alive and well without any lead. It balanced perfectly without added weight. It has a NLG #2. An ARF [that folded it's wings] with an obscene amount of lead on the firewall and a OS 56 Alpha FS on the nose. [Tail dragger] #3 A kit built Kadet Sr with an OS 56 Alpha FS that also required quite some lead to balance. [Tail dragger.] #4, an ARF sits quietly waiting in its box to be let out. I bought a hand pump used to inflate basketballs at Walmart for a few bucks. Glued the brass nipple [that fits in the Schrader valve and that came with the tires] into a plastic adapter that came with the pump. It works like a charm. RE: hobby vs sport
Like others said, it can be both. However, to me , at age 64 and only a recent rc pilot ['07], it's a hobby. I do this to relax, have fun and associate with people I otherwise might not have met. I am having so much fun with this, that it's probably regarded illegal in some quarters and wish that I had discovered RC planes years ago!! As in my other hobby [photography] , I like to figure out the technical aspects associated with getting these critters to fly and not hopefully crash.

Luke, I have decided to use the OS .61 on the T28 . It makes more sense to find an appropriate size plane for the TH.75 Last year, some people with T28 s at our field had .91 FS mounted, and the planes flew very well. Since I did not want to make the investment in the .91 I have to make do with what is lying around.

Homelite Plumbing Question
Last year I bought a converted Homelite 25cc [I think], which has a carb. with a plastic bulb on top. There are two small dia. tubes on the side, one in the part underneath the bulb and the other in the body of the carb. What is the function of these tubes? It appears that the top tube is connected to the bulb operation, whereas the other tube, I have no clue. This is probably an easy question to answer, but I am at a loss...

RE: DUBRO PNEUMATIC TIRES - leaking air
Steve, Good suggestion. I called Dubro customer service in the meantime and was told that using silicone caulk would not work. In fact, there's a "pocket" that the valve fits in and only when the tires are over inflated, would they leak around the valve stems. Also if you by accident push the valve into the tire, not to go fish for it as you would damage the "pocket" and have instant leakage. Further, I was told not to store aircraft standing on their wheels as that would also accelerate deflation... Is the name of the sealant actually "Green Slime" ?

DUBRO PNEUMATIC TIRES - leaking air
There seems to be little practical information available regarding the air valves installed on these tires. Recently I have outfitted several of my planes [Sr. Telemaster, DHC-3 Otter and Kadet Sr] with these wheels/tires and some tires will hold the pressure, whereas others will not. I thought about removing and applying some clear silicone caulk around the valve stems and then re-inserting it. Any thoughts on the matter?

RE: os wankel starting problem
First, forget about my comment regarding the "gaskets" as that applied to a used engine only. I would however check for the engine getting fuel. So, did you adjust anything on the carburettor? Your instruction booklet should probably say something about needles that regulate air/fuel mixture [low end / high end]. Also did you keep the fuel tank at roughly the same level as the carburettor and if there is a nipple on the muffler, did you connect the pressure line? I hope someone with actual Wankel experience chimes in to give you some practical advice! Good luck. mvg

RE: os wankel starting problem
Somebody in our club bought a couple of used OS Wankel engines on the internet. He brought them to the field to try them out. He could get one to run without problem, but the other had little or no compression and would not run despite the fact that there was enough fuel. Then he took the recalcitrant engine apart to see why there was no compression. I vaguely remember that there are "square" looking "gaskets" that may have to replaced, but I might be totally wrong on that one, so somebody correct me if I am wrong. These OS Wankel engines are not being produced anymore, as I understand it. PS I certainly would start off with a new glow plug or test the one that came with it.

RE: DHC Otter [Unionville?] - Suggestions for Prop ground clearance
Mike, 3 blades is indeed the first thing that comes to mind, so I had searched for comments on 2-blades vs 3 -blades before posting. From comments I read, it appears that a third blade may be not as effective... This Otter is a rather heavy aircraft [have not weighed it yet], so I need all the power I can get out of the Thor. My friend had flown it originally with an old 35 Quadra and that was marginal.

DHC Otter [Unionville?] - Suggestions for Prop ground clearance
A few weeks ago a friend , at the RC club I belong to, gave me a very nice 96" wingspan Otter, [vintage unknown]. He had picked it up at a "Swap Meet" a couple of years ago and had flown it only a few times but seems quickly to have lost interest in it. It was gathering dust in his basement. Now it is in my basement workshop to get it ready to fly. In the meantime, I have installed a new Thor 45CDI, 5" Dubro pneumatic tires and all the electronics. [The Thor is mounted in the location where it should be and I have no leeway here.] Then it struck me [no pun intended] that the propeller a MAS 20x8 has a ground clearance of 3" when sitting idle, but when the fuselage datum is parallel to the ground there's only about 1" and you can guess that that's not enough margin. Short of changing the landing gear, which I really do not like to do, what options do I have? Since I will use an electric starter [will not risk my fingers] , I can have the prop parallel with the ground, against compression to prevent a possible ground strike when coming in a with a "deadstick", but that does not take care of normal operation. Any comments you have are welcome.

RE: Gas engine for Senior Telemaster
Flew my ST [arf, taildragger] with G20EI for the first time today. Both are brand new and I am only a relative beginner. Take off with 25% throttle w/some rudder correction required. Did not get beyond 1/2 throttle. Landing was uneventful, no floating. Idle was just right. It seems that the G20 is a good alternative to glow.

Wings Folded - Kadet Senior -UPDATE
This afternoon during it's 5th flight the wings on my Kadet Senior folded, broke off , fluttered down and the fuse went straight down with the new OS 56 FS first into the dirt up to the firewall. Needless to say I am not very happy. This ARF when it came first out of the box had a few loose balsa parts. Since I had read about ARFs sometimes not having glue in the right places, I had checked everything and glued anything that looked suspicious. Obviously not enough! In retrospect, I probably should have epoxied and glassed the wing halves to prevent this from happening, but the instructions do not make such suggestions. The aluminum spar that holds the wing halves together had simply broken thru the bottom of the wing but the nylon wing bolts are still in place... The OS 56 FS alfa needs a new head as the muffler took a piece with it when it broke off... The plane is a total loss. And the darn thing is, that it actually is a really nice plane for the beginner that I am. I'll report this to SIG and see what their reaction is. 8/25/08 - update Today, I received an e-mail from Bob Nelson at SIG MFG with the message that a new Kadet Sr had been sent out as a replacement. That is an example of excellent customer service!

RE: Wings Folded - Kadet Senior
I think that it's just an anomaly for wing halves to fold and certainly not a regular occurrence, otherwise it would be well known. Before I got the ARF, I had been flying a 20 yr old 3 channel [no ailerons] model that was a recent gift to our club. It has a one piece wing and is a kit built plane. Several members have Kadet Srs , both ARF and kits and have not experienced any problems either.

RE: Wings Folded - Kadet Senior
I was just flying wide circles at 300ft or so and was going somewhat lower to do the same thing, when the wings folded. The end ribs of each wing half, which in the front fit in a slot and the nylon bolts are still in place - go figure... The plane was never subjected to any aerobatic activity, so it can't be excessive stress that it is not designed for. I e-mailed pictures to SIG so that they can take a look at it. Occasionally this has happened to the Kadet SR, I read after doing a search on RCU.
