RE: Great Planes Goldberg Anniversary Cub Kit
I recently helped a friend of mine restore a Goldberg Cub he built about 20 years ago as a teenager. It was heavy, had a bad twist (over 6 degrees) in the wing, and had the original long wing hacked up and re-glued to make the clipped wing. the workmanship was kind of bad. Sheesh, that was Frankenstein's Cub! It still flew reasonably well, and didn't "tip stall" as so many in the hobby say now days. This is really a full stall/spin, or uncoordinated stall, not the tip of the wing stalling, generally speaking. Anyway, I digress... My point is that this model is docile in the air, and doesn't really have any bad manners in the air if built moderately well. Like fredscz says, it flies slow even for how heavy it is. Just don't build a big warp in the wing! [:D] One other thing about that wing- it is WAY overbuilt & heavy as the designer would have you build it! We ended up designing a new wing (D-tube construction) that was much lighter and easier to build. I think we shaved off a pound or so, & it flew even better at the lighter weight. Build it light and enjoy a great model!

Wow, great report! And that engine... man, that's alot of poop in there! I bet it goes like crazy with that engine. Congratulations! I also have ordered the new compact Wingspan retracts that were designed to fit the Top Flite Corsair 60 ARF, and was told that they will ship on Monday. I will be taking a good look at these retracts & reporting back here on what I find. I see that they use a drag link with a ball & socket for the rotation mechanism... VERY similar to some full scale rotators I have studied. Hopefully these are the rotaters we have been waiting for!!!!! [8|]

OS .60 FP Bushed engine suddenly dies
Hi guys, I was wondering if anyone could give me some clues as to a problem I am having with a friend's O.S. .60 (bushed engine/airbleed carb/pitts muffler) he has on a Goldberg Cub. This engine idles wonderfully, transitions very well, and runs great at full throttle... BUT, when left around 1/4 to 1/3 throttle for 5-30 seconds, it suddenly dies randomly. No sputtering, no gurgling, no lean-out. Just dies like I flipped a switch. It will start right back up every time. This engine is in tune I assure you... it runs great, and it will idle/run forever, EXCEPT at 1/4 to 1/3 throttle!! On ground or in flight, doesn't matter. It will stay running in that range IF you leave the glow igniter attached. I have tried what seems like everything, such as: - new plumbling, twice (no bubbles at all during operation) - new fuel - tried many new plugs, no difference - carb disassembled and cleaned - sealed backplate and carb - sealed the pitts muffler to the engine - checked head for cracks, bolt tightness - checked for leaks everywhere - tried plugging a muffler pipe (to increase back pressure) I will now share a couple of things that are suspect: - I saw a moderate scratch in the cylinder wall. - the backplate looked as if it had been rubbed fairly hard by the crank pin/conrod... well beyond slight swirling I have seen before. - when the engine quits, the fuel instantly runs back to the tank from the carb. My other engines seem to keep fuel in the line up to the carb unless it runs out, at least when the throttle is at idle. Any thoughts? This engine rans perfect in this exact plane & configuration a few years ago... only after a clean-up and general servicing to bring it back to flight status did it start this behavior.

RE: OS .60 FP Bushed engine suddenly dies
Thanks for the input, guys. Let me elaborate. The engine runs wide open, and runs well... full power is being developed. It also idles well, runs at half throttle perfectly, and will never sputter or so much as cough as long as I stay away from 1/3 throttle. Fuel tank position is correct, and is the exact same as before the problem surfaced, so that theory is out (the tank was only partially full when I saw it drain back). The carb was sealed to the engine as I noted in my first post. No change in the problem after sealing. Lastly, it starts and runs fine when up to temp, just not at 1/3 throttle. At that throttle position, it may run 10 seconds, it may run a minute, but at some random point it will stop without sounding too rich or lean. The idle is very consistant, and will idle for many minutes without loading up or leaning out. It seems perfectly dialed in! Very strange. Just to eliminate some possibilites, I am thinking about trying a different carb. I just need to find one that will fit. if that doesn't work, I will pull the motor and put it on the stand.

Azzir325, Why don't you start your own company and show them all how it's done? While we all would love model Mfrs to stock more parts, it obviously isn't going to get much better unless they could make a good profit doing it. It would cost big bucks to have an extensive, long term replacement parts program. Big bucks. As stated earlier, the end cost to the customer would be too high for the market to bear, and then we would all be here reading your thread called "Rant: How come ARFs & parts are so expensive". You keep saying others are missing your point. No, honestly I think they see your point. At least I do. So do you have a legitimate complaint? Of course. Do many of us feel the way you do about spare parts? Yes (but more like wishful thinking that we keep to ourselves). Your quotes: "Oh little Joey, put your pacifier back in your mouth and go back to your crib for a nap...". "I can't stand those whiners! Congrats on your sucking tho!". "Wah wah wah....". "You go girl!!!". "I think you and people like you are "moles" for the manufacturers...". Here is a point for you to understand: Is it silly for you to carry on like this about it? You betcha. Any message you intended to pass on is meaningless now, with conduct like this. Out.

RE: OS 1.20AX Unexplained Flameouts.......>>>
The fuel line wouldn't be dry unless the line was sucking air, right (i.e., empty tank, hole, etc.)? That shows that your fuel system should be solid, like you said. Sounds like you are closing it on it, but I would urge you to just try blocking one exhaust stack, since it is so easy. I wouldn't just assume that the 1.20 should have enough push... a bigger engine doesn't assure more muffler pressure. Try wedging a dowel in an exhaust... if it works, you have pinpointed the trouble. I went through this with an Evo 100/pitts combo that made me want to jump off a cliff. Now it is the bomb diggity. If you either restrict the pitts or install the powerbox, my pesos are on your problem going away. My brother has this engine in a ESM Spitfire, and I think he restricted the exhaust on his pitts. Runs like a top! He gave me the powerbox muffler to try on my JBA 1.20. Anyway... good luck and let us know!!! LONG LIVE GLOW!!![:D] couldn't resist

RE: OS 1.20AX Unexplained Flameouts.......>>>
Taz, did you ever try blocking off one exhaust on your pitts muffler? I know others have mentioned it, but I didn't see that you actually tried it (maybe I missed it). I would bet that fluxuating pressure is your problem, given that you checked other things. I bet the mixture is fine at full throttle on the ground, but the mix leans out too much to support combustion when you back off the throttle. I have had several instances of this happen to me with pitts muffler setups! I actually crimp down the exhausts until I get just enough back pressure to get a good fuel flow at all throttle settings. This adjustment has turned several "headache" engines into my favorites! p.s. I would pressure test your fuel systems instead of vacuum test... pressure will mimic "in-service" conditions more closely, & tend to open pinholes in the fuel lines, while vacuum will contract the lines and could hold the pinhole shut. If you are already doing this, please disregard! Good luck and I hope you get it figured out soon!!

RE: Vacuum form problem
It's the age-old problem off the oven being too hot in the middle! You might try a (removable) heat deflector in the center of your oven to create a cooler spot in the center. Might require a little experimentation but it will be cheap, easy, and reversible. My opinion (as others have said) is that the center of your plastic is too hot compared to the rest which results in more stretch before it is pulled to the mold, causing it to bunch up a little. Interesting set up you have there, it looks like my machine turned upside down! [:D] Sid, how is that Starfire coming along? Oh how I want a Starfire B.

Well, for now I am staying away from electric gear on anything but .40 size and smaller electrics. Pneumatic gear at least won't self-destruct if they happen to fold, and I believe they will remain the more robust choice for some time to come. It's a pity though, as I too have a romance going with the smooth operation of electric gear... love that scale retraction! WORLD, WE NEED SOME GOOD 100 DEGREE ROTATING RETRACTS!!! COME ON, NOW!!! Thanks, irocbsa. I put a fairly substantial layer of glass on the inside of the firewall area, with extra reinforcement around the opening. I can't believe how strong it is now... it's bulletproof! weight isn't bad, either. I now need to get some matching latex paint for the trapeze and other stuff... this will be my first try with latex. Can anyone tell me if I should get gloss, satin, or flat? Still doing reading on this subject, but haven't ran across this aspect yet. One thing is for sure, I CAN'T wait to have a warbird without retracts!!! Retracts are awesome, but man what a pain to my head and my wallet! Just think, no battery/air worries, no malfunctioning... I am super stoked. I just might get the Val next, although the new liveries for the P-51 look good, too. RE: KMP Stuka-build details
Update for those planning on installing a PTE 36 on their Stuka... I have taken the plunge and have mounted the PTE 36 on my Stuka B. I must say it was a bit more work that I thought it would be, but it fits beautifully and is fully enclosed. The engine with stock standoffs is too long to fit under the cowl without some mods- the instructions say there should be 145mm between firewall and thrust washer, but 150mm seemed to be more like it. The PTE is 162mm between firewall and thrust washer. I ended up shortening the standoffs by 12mm, cutting a larger center hole in the firewall for the carb to get air, and had to cut the lower firewall out and glass in a sub-firewall so the muffler would fit behind the engine. After all that, AND adding more wood to the main firewall and glassing, I can move on to the next step. I will post pics soon. My wing has also been mounted to the fuselage, and I replaced the wooden wing dowels with thick-walled aluminum tubing. To make the dowel hole in the wing and fuse, I made a 1/32 ply pattern with the proper hole spacing, then used it to drill the fuse holes first. I then positioned the wing properly and marked the leading edge from the inside of the fuselage. I then drilled those holes and voila (well, it wasn't THAT easy heh heh). This only works if you cut a hole in the fuse for access behind the firewall... thanks Irocbsa for the hint! It made working on the front end so much easier.
