RE: When a receiver battery goes low...
Thanks for the answers. I'm using an Airtronix RDS8000 on 2.4, and no one at our field has a clue about them. I bet it was rebooting, cuz I did seem to blip on and off. After the flight someone tested the battery and it was at 4.9 or so, but was probably less under load. RS

When a receiver battery goes low...
....what is affected first, the signal or the servos?[X(] I know I should have a larger battery than the 600mah nicad I was using. I estimate about an hour total time. I was landing and swinging out wide a couple hundred yards away, and I was getting what seemed like an intermittent signal. The throttle was already down which was good. Luckily or not, it was a Kadet Sr. which was slowly flopping around, it would occassionaly respond then flip the other way. Somehow i got it to pancake in and just put a simple crack in the wing and some split monocoat several places. Is it my understanding that with 2.4 radios, the Rx needs to talk to the Tx. So if the RX battery is low could it have a problem at a distance? Searching here on RCU they seem to claim the servos get sluggish first, but those were very old posts, from FM days. Thx RS
ORIGINAL: parpar1 If the strain relief is not to keep the wires from failing / pulling free, then what is it there for?
The strain relief keeps the wires from pulling lose, but not from failing. Look at this photo of my Tx. It looks like the wire is sliced just beyond the glue. It's difficult to imagine how this happens, but I think a tool used during assembly cracks the sub-standard wire. Airtronics should have issued a recall or at least a notice on this problem. It can affect any wire on either side. RDS
ORIGINAL: hy flyr After seeing that picture I pulled the back off my tx and checked my wires. They all have a strain relief with a blob of silicone or sometning to keep it from pulling free. On another note, I realized that since I'm using duel elevator mixing, I can't get my left elevator to work on the fail safe function. That's not good at all. No way do I want to go back to a y-harness.
All radios have strain relief and some silicone type stuff, but that isn't keeping them from failing. You may still want to add a tad more flexible silicone up the wires a bit. And still keep a close eye on it. IMO. RS

Eight years ago or so, I had ordered a vintage plane kit from him on eBay, and after several weeks emailed to ask if it had been sent. He replied back that he had been so busy and hadn’t been able to get to his cavernous warehouse under the streets of NYC. A couple more weeks pass, and I politely ask if it had been sent. That’s when he laid into me, calling me a crook and other choice expletives. He claimed it had been sent and he was putting me on his blocked list. Nasty Nasty person! If you had seen his feedback on eBay in those days you would be shocked, probably 10 percent negative. And every person who had given him a negative got a negative right back! Nothing was ever his fault. He was perfect, so never needed to apologize. [X(] I’ve had thousands of transactions on eBay and never has anyone infuriated me like this scum-bucket. RE: GAS/GLOW HOW TO....
I've been noticing at the local hobby stores that the glow and gas models sit around, while the electrics have a descent turnover. You notice too, that OS is putting out gas engines and electric motors. I'm thinking that people are getting to hate glow fuel, for the price and mess, and I'm expecting to see more and more smaller gas engines, if they can get them a bit smaller, lighter and more powerful. That's where this gas/glow conversion is interesting. 3% oil instead of 18% and a fraction of the price.[X(] FR

I think my RDS8000 TX battery is giving out already. I have 2 Futaba's with 8-9 year old batteries which still seem to work fine, and my Airtronix is less than 2 years old. RE: *Airtronics RD8000 2.4 GHz*
ORIGINAL: Star7 Andrewskj, the actual antenna is the ~1.5'' smaller diameter end of each of the black leads. The rest is shielded coax. Only the very tips need to be at 90 degrees. I would try to keep those ends a couple of inches away from other conductors, where possible but the black coax is shielded and not sensitive to interference. You can pretty much put the receiver anywhere convenient. you might need to reach the bind button from time to time. i have found the FHSS1 receivers to be shock and vibration insensitive (so far). On my planes, I glue a piece of plastic tubing to the floor of the fuse and one to a bulkhead...the thin part of the antenna lead is slipped inside. That way the antennas are in 90 deg and can be slipped out if I want to pull the reciever.
Receiver antenna question. I had a plane with a mishap[:o], and one of the two RX500 antenna was broken off with about an inch and a half left. On the FM radios, I was able to simply solder on a new antenna lead. I was planning to use this in a limited range (1000 ft.?) park flyer. Would it be ok to strip most of the short piece sticking out? Afterall, aren't there two antenna as a redundant safety measure? Should I now consider this RX as trash, send it to Airtronix for repair, or is there something I can solder on? [X(] Thanks, Rod S

Anyway, my order arrived in just 3 weeks. not bad. Everything seems fine quality, except one of the 2 lipo's has a problem.[:o] I couldn't get any current from it, and it wouldn't charge. Then I happened to squeeze the sides of the battery on the end where the wires come out and it would then complete the circuit. I had already changed the connectors which would void the warrantee, and it wouldn't be worth sending back a $9 battery and waiting several months anyway.
