RE: 3D- Is it the airframe or the make that makes the difference?
One thing for sure Steve, most of the mid-wing airplanes are very popular for inherent stability, like the Extra 260/300, Edge 540, Yak 54, Lazer 200, etc..... it seems that these planes are suitable for 3D manuevers. Next qualities to look at is light wing loading, Large control surfaces, and a very light and strong running power plant!

Believe me Dave, I with you there. I am definitely "not the sharpest knife in the drawer"! Thank God for threads like these. It really does not have to take a whole lot of research to find out whats the best economical set-up, for the best performance for these planes. ..... at the same time formulas gives us a mathematical explanation of things. But I do not want to have to think that hard to have FUN![:)]

RE: Extreme Flight 88" Yak - Build and Fly
I know that this Engine / Prop Load Calculation makes for great discussion, but totally unecessary. Most of us already know that works for most 50cc applications, the 22-8 to 22-10 and 23-8 props will work. But if you do not factor in the atmospheric conditions (altitude) it really is a moot point. What it really boils down to is performance you can feel through your thumbs: Engine RPM's, Engine Temperatures, aircraft selection, and aircraft weight, still needs to be factored in. No I am not a formula junkie, (even though I deal with formulas with my Job every day) but I know what works and what does not work. Formulas are a good way to find a good starting point, but real world results that is shared here amoungst ourselves, is what matters!

RE: Vess Props
MM, You are somewhat correct. Most of us Vess Prop users kinda know what to run with what engine combo. Most DA 50 with stoclk exhaust 22B, tuned pipe or cans - 23B, If you live in higher altitudes, most folk change to the 'A' props. But, just like any new prop you are experimenting with, you will have a few props, unless you do some homework, or ask on these threads. I am lucky I was able to get sell the myriad of CF props that I tried for IMAC and 3D. The Vess Props are labeled as such because of the pitch changes from the center to the tips of the prop. The 22A = 22x8, 22B = 22x10, 22C = 22x12, and so forth for the larger size props. Vess Props help the engine to spool up more, higher revs equals more thrust. Thats why it feels like you bolted on a turbo when you switch to a Vess Prop. Best prop for freestyle and extreme 'down on the deck' 3D antics![sm=thumbup.gif]
ORIGINAL: RoughLandin I'm also interested in the response to LordSirOb's question about the B60 (366gt) and a tuned pipe setup I would not recommend using a castor tail wheel setup on this plane. Primarily due to the monster vertical stab and rudder, this thing will weather vein on you real quick in very little breeze, making the big prop quite dangerous when taxiing
Weather Vaning is not a problem with the Yak, if you set-up the castor wheel correctly. Remember it has huge elevators as well, they keep the back wheel very well planted, even in twenty mph winds, Wind higher than that,..... well my Excursion will weather vane in those winds![sm=wink_smile.gif] Buddy of mine has a B60 with stock muffs in his 88" yak, used a menz 22-10 for break in.
ORIGINAL: RTK Thanks for the suggestions guy's. So far the only thing I haven't done is the "stab fix" and a good lateral balance. Elevators are matched perfectly in both speed and throw through out the whole range. I really like using Goldsmiths trim chart when setting up my planes, it sure makes trimming easy. I guess I need to get off of my lazy butt and fix the stabs. The lack of elevator effectiveness after "waving" (so to speak) still has me a little puzzled, must be the air flow being blocked from the elevators when doing it.
RTK, Check to see if one of your elevator servos is weak. Even though you may have full range and even throw on your elevators, sounds like one of the elev servos is blowing back, or is weak. I have seen your simptons before: In landings and low-passes the plane will not hold level flight, and little corrections end up being over corrections.

The push=Pull Option on the rudder is not set up that way. But that doesn't mean it cannot be modified. Chris Hinson designed it for Pull-Pull Rudder set up to centralize the mass. if you were to use stock muffs on a new/old DA100, it could balance out with one Rudder servo in the tail, but in my honest opinion, you will need two rudder servo's, especially for extreme aerobatics!

RE: Triple Creek 3D Fly-In: TC3D, Tampa, June 21 & 22
Triple Creek 3D Fly-In - TC3D! Event Wrap-up! Even though we had some “Liquid Sunshine falling on our heads, (and sometimes blowing in our faces!) the Triple Creek RC Club threw one heck of a Party over the weekend. The Triple Creek 3D Fly-In (TC3D) will go in the TCRC books as a success story. The one thing I really learned about this weekend is how resilient us RC pilots are. Myself and about 15 other pilots stuck it out for three whole days, and in between the rains, got some excellent flying in. Friday, the day before the event, I worked the morning hours getting my pit set-up, and some electrical for work done for TCRC. Then I spent the rest of the afternoon huckin’ it up with John Nelon and his “Klown Posse 40% Edge 540. The whole TCRC field was dressed out and ready for a 3D Party of epic proportions. Saturday, the first day of the event, started off great! After the pilots meeting, all of the pilots were stoked and getting up in the air! The Boy Scout of America (whom we are sponsoring with the TC3D Event) were ushering in cars in the parking lot, and spectators started shuffling in. The Event was about to hit its mark, but just before the Noon Time Demo, the winds kicked up without warning, taking out three canopy tents, including one from Mr. Chris Hinson from Extreme Flight RC. Then the sideways rain came down and pretty much blew out the event. That’s when TC3D lost its momentum. Our Event schedule was blown out as well. What was really neat is how adaptive the whole TCRC Staff, pilots, and spectators were. We were kind of at the mercy of the weather. When it was raining, and if it wasn’t blowing sideways, we were able to sit and talk with fellow pilots and friends. When it stopped raining, we went at it hard! We were able to get a Tail Dunk Contest in on Sunday and the crowd loved it! But had to cancel the “Dead stick Contest and the “All Up Huck just so that we could maintain open flying for all the pilots who choose to weather the rain storms. Sunday started with a few light showers, but after that the weather was starting to cooperate, and the afternoon was filled with hot 3D action w/ the “Tail Dunk Contest and Mr. John Nelon (aka X-Rated) knife edged his 40% Edge 540 right into good ole Mother Earth. Steve Hoyt also put in his 40% Godfrey Extra 300 and totaled it. (He re-kitted the plane back to splinters!) Ricardo, Flying Skunks, and Dale Medin also joined them at the Aunt Jemima Award of Excellence ceremonies! Jeff Wortner (Pres) kept the Door prizes, Pilot raffles, and Grand Prize Raffles flowing out. Our sponsors prizes were just ‘off the hook’ ! Dave Davidson of TCRC won the 50cc Extreme Flight RC Plane and Engine combo, and it couldn’t of gone to a more deserving soul. Dave is one of those members that can be counted on, and is always there when work needs to be done. He has been doing it since the club opened about 2 years ago. Congratulations Dave! Jeff Wortner and John Winchester are the two MAIN DUDES at TCRC and they went above the call of duty to help with the success of TC3D. A Big Thank-You to those guys, and a great big thanks to the great crew at Triple Creek RC club. Also, great big thanks to all the pilots who came out to support this event. It appears everybody had a great time! Triple Creek RC did one fantastic job! Here are the results from this weekend: -We had 40 pilots pre-register, and 50 total pilots registered on Saturday - Help raise just over $500 for the Boy scouts of America. - Plenty of smiles to go around! - Five (5) Aunt Jemimam Awards Of Excellance! - Lots of prize winners! Another Great Big Thanks to all of our sponsors!!!! I know that the TC3D could have been much bigger and spectacular, but considering what happened this past weekend, It was one of the best times in my RC Airplane adventure, and I hope that it was all that, for those who were there as well! I am looking forward to TC3D 2009! Happy Skies and God Bless!
ORIGINAL: edskorepa Dear Mr. Ladines, if you’ve had such a horrible experience with our pipes, why for god sake didn’t you pick up the phone and say something? That’s what I would do. I would call that dude at ES composites right away and demanded answers what went wrong! If there is a problem, we’d like to know about it so we can fix it. It really doesn’t matter how much testing we do, the ultimate testing is, when non- technical people like you start using are products. Also, our records show, you purchased four pipes in 2007, one in April, one in July and two in November. If the last two are installed in your Yak, then we’re down to two. I believe the one with crushed neck pictured in zlin226 post is one of yours (hope you don’t blame pipe for that). Now, we’re down to one only, possibly the one from your crushed plane which we’ve repaired (pipe) for you at no charge. So, where are those “3 pipes you literally have just melted away? Are you trying intentionally inflate your problem and negatively influence world wide audience on this forum or what? I can’t recall turning on, on you or stepping on your airplane. Sincerely yours, Ed Skorepa/EScomposites
Mr. Skopera, Please forgive me if I have offended you. If you will please re-read my original post I did not make any personal attacks on your company, customer service, or to you personally. My original intent was not to bash you or your products, but just reported my experiences with them. Like I said before, your pipes work, they are light, make more power than the KS Pipe, but the KS pipe works good and lasts longer. And to me that makes practical sense. No, I am not a technical guy, even though I am an expert in my technical field, But I have a decent set of thumbs and I think I know what works and what doesn't. I did not call you anymore because I simply choose not too use your products.

RE: Extreme Flight Extra 300, 50cc, 88.5inch Wingspan, Build !!!!!!!
ORIGINAL: zlin226 Rennie, I can't believe you're having trouble with ES pipe. If the front of the pipe starts to deform, that means you're crushing it with clamp. There's an aluminum insert in the neck so it's not caused by the heat. Ed e-mailed me couple of pics. You should always use spring type clamps as pictured and pipe will last long time just like mine. The second pic shows what'll happen if you use hose type clamp. Not a pipe's fault in my opinion
zlin, Well, that is your opinion, and I am just reporting what I have found in my own experiences. The ES pipe still deformed even with just the spring style clamps. I had two on my 110" EF Yak w/ ES pipes and spring clamps and it was deforming after the aluminum inserts. Ed said he re-engineered the 50cc pipes, but from what I have heard it is not much better, just $25 cheaper. With only 30-40 flights, almost 6 mos. old, the ES pipes on my 100cc was on its way to deforming on and after the alum. inserts. The alum. insert is just not backing the composite material enough. That is over $750 (3 pipes) that I literally have just melted away. Just not economical, even if you are just wanting the performance. KS aluminum 1060 pipe on my EF 50cc Extra 300 is still new looking and still holding inplace (just did cowl-off inspection and maintenance). I am going with Grieves pipes on my next Extreme Flight RC 150cc project in July w/ DA 170. I see that wavy777 is pretty much in agreement with me. With that said, being weight conscience is one thing, but paying way too much thru the nose, just is not sensible. With the KS and other aluminum tuned pipes, is way more practical and will last through several planes if you are careful. In addition, with Extreme Flight RC 50cc planes, you really do not have to do alot to keep a light airframe. Both the Yak and the Extra are hitting 17.25 - 19 lbs, and with the DA50 on KS 1060 pipes, they both fly awesome. If you follow the manuals and build them to what Chris Hinson recommends, you WILL have a great flying IMAC & 3D monster!

It depends on what engine and exhaust system. On my Set-up the 23 B gives me plety of down low pullout power and it still is pretty fast for high speed IMAC manuevers. Teh 23A acts like the engine is in granny gear and is a little too noisy. The 23B covers a wide flying envelope and is still fairly pretty quiet IMHO.
