RE: CG for the Nitroplanes (CMPro) Katana 120v2
Hey guys, I "nosed into" your thread looking for the same elusive CG for this aircraft. I bought mine from a fellow modeler and assumed I could get a decent manual from the manufacturer. What a joke! The Chinese to English translation would be hilarious if I wasn't seriously attempting to put this thing together. Relying on my experience alone for assembly, I pretty much tossed the so-called assembly instructions. The "manual" I had was apparently for a different aircraft and it told me the CG was 85mm (3.34") from the leading edge. This is incredibly too far forward, especially for a 3D aircraft! I was planning to place the CG on the wing tube but thought some of you may have already experimented here, and I was right. RC Universe is a great resource. I think I'll try just forward of the tube as a starting point expecting more stability until I fly it. After that I'll start moving it back until I get the agility I want in this 3D aircraft. I'm using a DLE-20 based on cost and the raves our club members have for this power plant. It should haul this one around quite nicely. I'm going to need nose weight unfortunately even cramming all of the equipment up front. Thanks for the advice!

RE: Light-Weight Paint Over Nitrate Dope
Thanks for the web page on colored dope. I'm building the SR Playboy (wingspan ~ 6ft) from RC Modeler plans 597. This is my first experience with an under-cambered wing. I sure would hate to try covering it with Monokote! I don't think it can be done without warping the structure. The plans have a dihedral or polyhedral option. I'm building it poly. The plans also have a option for floats, but I'm installing balloon tires. I may need to lengthen the nose a little because the electric motor probably won't weight as much as the original Enya glow engine (recommends ~.35ci.) It's all fun!

Light-Weight Paint Over Nitrate Dope
I'm scratch-building a Playboy old-timer that will be RC rather than the original free-flight. I'm using electric power and will cover the model with silk-span and nitrate dope. I'm told most paints can be applied over a nitrate doped surface and I want to use the lightest paint (also the less expensive) available. Fuel-proofing is not an issue. I know I can get Butyrate dope in colors but the stuff is really expensive. I will probably brush it on for a dull or semi-gloss finish but I do have spray guns I can use. I haven't a clue what to use. Painting seems to be an art quickly going away in this plastic-filmed ARF world and there aren't many scratch builders left in my club with the kind of experience I need. I appreciate the help!

RE: EVERYTHING YOU WANT TO KNOW ABOUT ELECTRIC FLIGHT
Thanks all. I'll do exactly that. The ESC will be in the tail next to the ducted fan motor (in the airstream for cooling purposes) and I'll lengthen the battery leads just enough to get the battery in the nose. Makes sense to increase the wire guage as well to cut down on potential voltage loss.

RE: EVERYTHING YOU WANT TO KNOW ABOUT ELECTRIC FLIGHT
I received a response for Elecrify. Doesn't help me much because I must move the battery far from the motor or have a 5 lb airplane. Here it is: "Thank you for contacting product support. Unfortunately we can't recommend any modifications on the leads as that hasn't been tested. This would also usually void the warranty. I would check some online Rc forums for some resolution from fellow modelers. Thanks." Mike M Product Support Technician Great Planes Model Distributers PS9021

RE: EVERYTHING YOU WANT TO KNOW ABOUT ELECTRIC FLIGHT
So far, no response from Great Planes Electrifly on the length of the leads from the ESC to the motor. I did find this statement in the ESC manual: “If the wires are not long enough to make all necessary connections to the ESC yet achieve good balance in the aircraft, it’s best to extend the length of the wires to the motor (not to the battery).” I don'r expect any more info but if I do I'll let you know.

RE: EVERYTHING YOU WANT TO KNOW ABOUT ELECTRIC FLIGHT
I'm building a ducted fan model and need to extend the leads (12-14 inches) from the 45 amp ESC (Electrifly) to the Ammo in-runner motor driving the fan. (24-45-3790kV) constant current = 25A, maximum surge current = 50A. At 11.1V maximim constant watts = 278. The best wire I can find in the hobby store catalogs is 12ga silicone manufactured in this case by Deans. I use Deans connectors so this seems to be the right wire but I don't find any data showing current ratings. Have I got the right wire for this application? Is there a source somewhere to size and purchase the proper lead wire? Ducted fans will typically physically separate the ESC from the motor and will require longer leads. Thanks for your help!

RE: Best way to Cycle Futaba 6EX Tx Batteries
I used short servo extensions. By soldering I made one with two male plugs and one female plug. Take the back case off the transmitter. Unplug the battery from the radio. Plug the battery into your new harness and the other end of the harness into the radio. This leaves one male connector still available. Put the case back on the radio and route the new harness so it is next to the battery. Now you can slide the battery cover off and plug whatever you want into the battery without unplugging anything. This bypasses the diode in the factory charge jack which is what I suspect you want to do. It works great for me.

RE: Am I expecting too much....
I once bought a 46 size U Can Do from Tower Hobbies. No damage to the box, but once inside I found the wing broken like someone had snapped it in two at the center section. It was major broken. Had to be put in the box this way originally. One call to Tower and explained as above. They sent me a return shipping label and promptly replaced the plane.

RE: Firewall removal
Snacker - I'm putting a Kadet Sr. ARF together right now. I see no need to remove the firewall. To put a larger tank in, I would use my Dremel tool with the flex shaft to get in and modify the factory tank cutout. No problem going in through the cabin area with this. Tower Hobbies site gives dimensions of most tanks they carry. If you don't have the Dremel tool just get a small rough cut file. Slower, but it will get the job done too.

It sounds like the engine is performing fine. Try an APC 13 x 6 and see what you think. On my Ultra Stik 40 and U Can Do 46 the overall performance (to me) was always better with the 13-6. Running Powermaster 15%.

I like the Marvel Mystery Oil made for air tools. I think it is formulated to lube and deal with the water commonly found in compressed air lines. Had a Saito 56 sit over two years that was treated with this and put in a zip lock bag. Started right up and ran fine.
