Glad to help. I used to do repair work for Quadra which was 60 miles north of Kingston at the time they were in business. Gord.

RE: US/Quadra 35 with points?
Good idea to have an ign switch on the side of the fuse. Just cut into the wire going from the points up to the coil and run the other side of the switch to ground.. Use a slide switch as opposed to a toggle switch. The engine vibration will make the toggle switch fall apart in short order. been there. I normalle set the carb so, when idle trim is put all the way to the bottom, it would shut the carb butterfly closed completely You could use a servo to operate another switch. You must use a resistor type plug with this motor also. Gord.

RE: US/Quadra 35 with points?
For choking, you stick your finger in the carb intake and pump the prop back and forth till your finger gets wet, then a couple of more pumps. These engines like to start wet. To clean the points, take the flywheel off, take the dust cover off to expose the points. Use a point file or fine sandpaper, not emory cloth to clean the points. I think it says on the point cover what the setting is. Either 16 or 20 thou. It I remember right. To remove any residue, take a piece of paper, like computer paper, and cut or tear a strip about a 1/4 in wide and put it in the point gap, close the point by turning the crank and pull the paper out. Do this a number of times till the paper comes out clean. Set the points with the gap open. reassemble and giv'er[:D] Quadra 35 takes an 18-8 prop and the Q42 takes an 18-10. Hope this helps.

RE: Hobbykings Turnigy battery DX8 problem
I would guess that something else went wrong. Low voltage warning is 6.4 volts, so you still had plenty of voltage left. The screen on the DX8 shows the batt voltage as well as the pic of the batt. The reason it quit could be anything. A buddy had his quit about a week ago after he put a new switch in it. Found the connector on the new switch was bad and pulled out. The HK batt. has been in for about a yr. with no problems

A little late but. The old insulation foam still works well but if you want bigger stuff you might try a marina where they use large styrofoam bocks for floating docks. I still have a block that is 2ft. by 4 ft. by 6 in. thick. Gord.

RE: Witch Lipo Connector is best?
The reason Deans doesn't want you to plug in the opposite end is, now you've added another heatsink that is drawing heat away from the piece you're trying to solder, heating the plastic even more. I use the trusty old weller soldering gun with no problems. The secret is to heat up the tip of the gun till it starts to smoke, before soldering. I have no problems with 10 gauge wire with the gun. After tinning both the deans and the wire, let them cool, then put the wire on the Deans terminal and and put the heated tip on the wire till it bonds to the terminal. After soldering, the joint should look shiny. This is just my method and there are many choices, so try a number of them and use what you're comfortable with. I made this handy little clothspin holder as a third hand[:D]

RE: DX8 lipo charging???
It takes many hrs to charge in the trans. because of the low amp rate of the wallwart. I made a charge cord to charge with the Accucel 6, out of a rcvr extension cable as it's the same pin spacing as the one on the batt. Just get the polarity right. I charge at a 2 amp charge rate. Takes about 2 hrs. as opposed to 12 hrs with the wall wart.

I've done quite a few of these, in fact I just did a 4 cell pack today to put in a dustbuster where the nicads finally took a dump. [:D]I use the trusty old Weller gun. Just get the tip good and hot before you touch it to the cells to tin the ends. An 80 watt iron does the trick too.

RE: Small Electric Planes
Doesn't really matter what turns the prop, the results are the same. Fun[:D] Our club is about half and half, glow/gas to electric. Electric makes winter flying much more enjoyable as an indoor sport, although our clubhouse at the field has a woodstove for winter flying. As far as size goes, there is not much difference. A buddy has a Twist 40 with a an OS46FX and I have one with a Himax 50 and there is no difference in the speed. Many of you old pharts like me remember the old Byron Christen Eagle. Here's mine that used to have a Quadra 52 on it. Now has a Turnigy 3000 watt motor, about the same hp as the 52. Vertical is a little better as it swings the bigger 22 in. prop at a little lower rpm. Otherwise it's about the same performance. Weighs about the same at 18 lbs. Another is my Yellow Aircraft Cap 10B with the same motor on it. I still help the guys with the glow and gas motors. As a matter of fact I got a new Xenoah 26 going for a guy today. No need for any animosity. We're all in this for the flying. Off to the side of the main runway, there is plenty of room where I fly my 35 in. 3D foamys.

RE: Can I resucitate my dead li-po pack?
I've killed a few and brought them back. Hook it up to a nicad charger till it's over 3 volts per cell. then hook it up to your lipo charger and it will charge properly. Keep a close eye on it. Don't leave it on your nicad charger much over 3 volts per cell as it doesn't have the proper cutoff when the batt. is charged and could cause the batt to light up. Very dangerous.

When I ran a small motor shop, over a period of a yr, probably a couple of hundred lawn mowers, at least one would come up with black wire. Only fix was to replace the wire from end to end. Always a negative wire.

I use these T connectors from HK They work better than Deans. Made from nylon, they'll take the heat when soldering. http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__11961__Nylon_T-Connectors_10_Pairs_20pc.html I use the trusty old Weller soldering gun. Made this Clothspin holder to work with the third hand for soldering connectors.

RE: Is Gas Engines a Fad?
I've been into RC for the last 50 yrs and have seen a lot of changes over that period. Started to play with electrics in the mid 90s when they first came out flying Zagis with nicads and brush type motors. At that time it was just a fad as I was into glow and gas at the time. When things started to get better with lipos and brushless, I found my air time gradually doubled when I went out to the field. Fully into elec. now. I take about half a dozen planes out to the field from micros, in case it's a calm day, 40 in. 3D foamys. Twist 40 electrified, and a Yellow aircraft Christen Eagle electrified. When I get to the field, I start up a 1000 watt generator that you can hardly hear run, plug two chargers into it, and go[:D] The Christen Eagle had a Quadra 50 in it when I bought it around 1995. Last year I converted it to electric with a 3000 watt motor in it. It weighs the same as it did with the Quadra, 18 lbs. As far as noise goes the 22 in prop makes about as much noise as a well muffled 50cc.[:)] About a 25% increase in performance. Takes about 40 mins to charge the batts while I fly my other planes. We've come a long way baby[:D]

RE: Who made the Royal ARF kits?
I still have the fuse. for the 25 sized Christen Eagle. I did have the fuse for the Zero up till a short time ago. It was a little different for an OK kit where it had more or less a plastic tube for a fuse. Heavy rubbery cowl that you couldn't break, although I tried[:D] Finally broke up the wing with the retracts in it. Also had the Chipmunk and put a kazillion miles on it till I destroyed the fuse. The wing was the same as the Zero with the exception of the wing tips and colour. After putting tips on and a paint job, it put the Zero back in the air. If I remember, the factory where they made them burned down.
