By the way, isn't it funny...when an electric guy says he's going nitro, he doesn't get 1* ratings on his post. When a nitro guy goes electric though, the handbags come out. Funny too, isn't it, that the nitro people think the electric people are haters, when in actual fact, between the two, nitro has BY FAR the most 'online terrorists'. :) Go ahead and rate this post 1*, PROVE ME RIGHT!!! HAHAHAHA. :) trollface.jpg

RE: Truggy help please...?!
I agree with you Neal, that there are too many who are eager to recommend something they haven't tried (though I have no idea if this is the case here or not, I'm just speaking theoretically), but the flipside is just as bad, fanboys who recommend their own equipment, simply because its what they have. The trick is to strike a balance. Nobody has run everything. You may have seen me recommend a P5 recently in another thread. This is an engine I personally have never used, however, I've been on the track against them, and I know from many years of solid feedback that they are great engines for the intended use of the poster. I guess all I'm saying is that as long as the research is done right, the best advice need not necessarily be from experience. It does however, take many years experience to do the research right, it's a bit of a catch 22. :)

RE: Optimus
ORIGINAL: Navin1980 The OFNA came with a 14 tooth pinion gear with it. Is there alot of stripping down to do to change the diff oil? I had read that the oil should be changed so was planing to do it, hopefully I won't have a few parts left over when I think I have it back together again!! The Optimus would of cost me €399 plus €50 shipping, the OFNA and batterys and charger cost me €450 including shipping so would of been the same. Although I was hit with a €70 tax charge when it was delivered to me but I would of had to pay that with the Optimus anyway. Plus the batterys I got are 5000mah 2s 50c which would be better than the ones that come with the Optimus and the charger is pretty good too. All in all I'm very happy with what I got. I'm not knocking the Optimus cos iv never used one but I am happy with the OFNA. The steering servo is quick and responsive too, so far anyway, it's a lot better than anything iv had before
Ask cumminspower what he runs in his as far as pinion, but the LX has a big spur, so I'm sure you can add a tooth or two more to the pinion without having a problem with heat or cogging. The stripping down isn't too bad, but the whole process of changing diff oils is not something you want to do often. Makes sure you get yourself some extra diff gaskets when you order the oil, it is very difficult to remove the old ones without damaging them, often impossible, and the diff will leak if you use a damaged one, which makes a hell of a mess. Shoot me a PM when you get around to doing it and I'll jot down some pointers for you.

Yes. The OFNA LX2e. If you join Tower Hobbies club, you get 50 bucks off a purchase over 300, so that brings the RTR down to exactly 300. It is impossible to get more car for your money. It is directly comparable and competitive as a platform with your friends' truggies. If delivery and tax on ordrrs from outside the EU bothers you and you want to try to find it locally, bear in mind that in europe, the car is distributed not by OFNA but by the maker themsrlves, Hong Nor.

RE: Getting back into the hobby
First of all, this is the third time that car has been discontinued, last time it was to update the radio, it will be back (or not), but in any case, just the fact that its discontinued is not a reason not to buy one, it is based on a truggy that's been around for a long time, the ST-1, you will not have any problem getting parts, the problem you'll have is breaking them. The little XS flux is ok, nothing special, it's a little monster truck, so it doesn't handle very well, but is strong and bouncy. Pretty mad on 3S. I it wasn't for the appalling handling, that truck would tick all the boxes. If only they'd made it a little wider and longer.

RE: Optimus
ORIGINAL: Gearhead8 I won't argue about my claims of OFNA. DHK is new as far as I can tell, so I would expect that Mugen, Kyosho, Ofna, Team AE and Losi are better supported than DHK. That I assume would be normal for any new company. Here in the states OFNA is the red headed step child and often times laughed at. As far as value, the OFNA does not come with a battery or charger. So there is another 100 to 200 dollars you need to spend on extra equipment that the DHK includes in the box. And again I own the DHK. The charger that is included, is a basic charger that is a balance charger. It eliminates any kind of mistake a person could make with a programmable charger, especially one whom may be new to electric power r/c. Dare I get into the servos that typically come with OFNA RTRs that need to be replaced immediately? As far as the track, both cars would need to have a few parts changed to last a race. That is about norm for anyone trying to race a RTR in Novice class or sportsman class. That is the idea of the forums, isn't it? To share and ready opinions and facts about our fun hobby.
OFNA is only in the US, so US opinions are the only ones, and you are the first I've heard to make such comments. Yes, the forums are for sharing and reading opinions and facts and it is the duty of we who know, to make sure the correct information is available to other forum Users. I promise you this is my only goal, I'm not trying to call you out or anything, just making sure the best info is here. 1/8th buggies or truggies I own or have owned in the past... Hobao (OFNA) Hyper 7 Xray XB8 Mugen MBX5 Mugen MBX5T Xray XT8 Losi 8ight Team Associated SC8 Team Associated RC8B Thunder Tiger EB4 S3 Kyosho Inferno GT Xray 808e Others I have extensive experience with due to friends running them... Thunder Tiger MT4 G3 HPI Trophy truggy Durango whatever the model is I can't remember, nice car actually. and I also had an OFNA Jammin SCRT10 until recently, which is a fantastic car. I mostly bash, I raced many years ago, nitro touring cars mostly but a little buggy too. And here's what I know... The DHK is supplied with under spec electronics, much worse than those supplied with the OFNA cars. The DHK battery and charger are bottom of the barrel (I checked), 20C is not enough battery and neither is 3S. A good battery and charger can be had for $80 plus delivery, much better than the DHK supplied kit. When you factor all that in, the DHK is poor value. OFNA are the distributor for several other brands, 2 of those brands are Hong Nor and Hobao (Hobao has now been passed to HPI), and another is now TeamC/Absima, I assume the replacement for Hobao. Absima is the Euro brand that used to be called Ansmann, another budget OEM with a good reputation. Anyway, Hobao and Hong Nor are the main brands on which OFNA built its reputation, and both brands have MANY National Championship wins and worldwide reputations for durabilty and value. The TeamC stuff we will have to wait and see. Nobody who knows what they are talking about laughs at OFNA. Not even I, who run Xray kit with Castle electronics mostly, the absolute top-of-the-line, and I still respect OFNA greatly. All RTRs need their steering servos replaced sooner rather than later. The OFNA is club legal out of the box, the DHK is not, due to the fact it doesn't have a 4S battery. Installing a 4S battery would require replacement of all the electronics and the battery.

RE: Getting back into the hobby
I have first hand experience of the Savage Flux. To be honest, although the Savage is synonymous with durability, it actually isn't that durable without spending some extra cash. I had over $1000 in mine and I still wasn't happy with performance or durability. The fact is that the Savage design is just out of date now and it really struggles with strong brushless setups. If you simply want an amazing truck that will keep going and going, pick up a Thunder Tiger MT4 G3. It comes with a 2.4 radio, electrics that can handle 4 or 6S straight out of the box (6S is madness, great fun), and it is actually a truggy platform dressed up as a monster truck. 1/8th brushless truggies are the pinnacle of the surface hobby IMO, and the MT4 has the best of all worlds, truggy platform, monster tires, 1/8th durability and 6S electrics. It just ticks all the boxes for the money. If I didn't already have a top of the line truggy I'd be looking at one myself, my bash buddy has one and it really is great, it's like its possessed, the power delivery is savage (no pun intended).

There is one great car for under 200...she can even build it and paint it pink :) http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_info.php/cPath/1_44_1258_2590/products_id/209045/n/OFNA-Ultra-LX-2E-Electric-1-8-Off-Road-Buggy Get her a Flysky GT3B radio for 40 bucks, a cheap 2000kv motor/ESC combo, a couple of pairs of 2S 5000mAh 40C or higher batteries and a Hitec 645mg servo. That would be about $400 all in I'd reckon. You could go for the RTR which is also great value at $350 at Tower, but she wont get to build it of course. For what its worth, Team Associated also offers a great RTR e-buggy for $500 on the nose (RC8BRS if I remember correclty), it's aimed at people who want to start e-buggy racing straight out of the box and seems like good value. If you meant 200 all in, get her a mini-8.

Hot Bodies D8T fits your criteria perfectly, and don't worry, despite being an HPI sister company, they are not afflicted with HPI's issues. Good truggy, good availability. The Nexx 8T is a solid choice too, but I must say I was impressed with the Hot Bodies, its a really pro car for the money. By the way, both the Jammin truggies were incredibly good, it is in the Nexx's favor that it is based on them.

RE: MT4 G3 SOON?!
What's not to like about it, it's a great truggy made into a monster truck. They probably counted on it being popular everywhere regardless which brand it was marketed under, and they were right, they couldn't make enough of them. As soon as the discontinuation was announced, the remaining models disappeared in days. The reason TT bought Associated was really to market the ACE RC stuff in America under a brand Americans trust (the DS1015 servo is still THE best 1/8th servo if you ask me, and its a TTR product at the end of the day), but it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if an MGTe one day appeared and it was just a rebadged MT4. Truth is they don't need to sell it as AE now because everyone knows its a great car, despite the fact that the American market has never liked Thunder Tiger much. Sure you might say they'd sell more if they also made a new AE MGTe, but at the end of the day, they already can't make them fast enough, so who cares. :) To Europeans and Asians, Thunder Tiger is like Traxxas is to you guys, it's everywhere and it has a good reputation.

RE: This is ridiculous...
Agreed, still a sound choice. What I would do with the ESC for a single battery is simply cut the two connectors off (you'll be left with just two wires) and solder an ultra deans on. Simples. :) The only complaint I have heard about that car is that with EXTREME bashing (big jumps and roof landings, etc), the shock towers are bendy. To be honest, the stock towers are so cheap, I wouldn't bother with an upgrade. I'd just keep straighteneing them until they became soft, then replace with another stock item. Another trick I've heard is using the stock stamped aluminum ones with a carbon fiber one stuck together with epoxy. This is an old trick for some of the older buggies, I'm not even sure if its feasible for the LX, but like I say, just straighten the stock ones IF you ever manage to bend them, it's no biggie. You could always go for the fat expensive alloy ones some time down the line, but at the end of the day, they will still bend if you land on them from 15 feet at speed. Some people are paranoid about the plastic rear brace (Pyromatic himself included), but don't be too tempted to try to 'solve' that, as particularly on the rough stuff, the plastic brace gives good chassis flex which is very beneficial to handling. Consider that almost all Xray cars are supplied with composite braces these days, and even those that are not, you will often find that racers have swapped them to composite for racing. Pyromatic installed a full alloy top deck to his, which I'm sure gives him peace of mind, but is not something that I would feel necessary.

RE: Brushed upgrade
ORIGINAL: malekith  Thanx for the reply, first one to accept the validity of running brushed. What does the X2 in the 16x2 motor mean?
I accept your reasons, however, I still feel that you can get the results you want from a brushless setup. The denominations 16x2 mean it's 16 turns (lower turns=faster, but more power drain), the x2 refers to how many times the motor is wound. More windings means smoother delivery and smoother draw from the battery, and a little more torque. Now, regarding brushless.... the brushless motor you have, geared nice and low, would be great for the young ones on a regular 7.2v nimh. It will not be uncontrollably fast, 4000kv is a nice mild setup. You could expect more runtime with the brushless motor from any battery, regardless of chemistry. Plus you will never have to replace brushes, etc. The 72A requirement of that motor is a statement of 'burst' current, the most the motor can possibly draw under load. You would be fine with a 60A esc for that motor, it won't even get warm. The 8.4v battery will make it around 15% faster and will also run fine, no problem at all. If you try it and the speed is more than you expected, you can easily just throw a smaller pinion on the motor and reduce the speed dramatically. If you insist on waiting to use the BL setup, I won't berate you for it, it is completely your choice, and feeling comfortable with what you are running is a totally valid reason. Once you do throw that motor in there though, you will realise why we just don't do brushed any more.
