RE: New Evolution 10cc gas engine
I've had my EVO 10cc installed in a vintage (80's) VK Cherokee. It performs flawlessly. I've been R/C modelling since 1964 so that's my experience bona fides. I would highly recommend the 10cc engine to anyone. Output power is incredible. The only small flaw was in the gasket materiel provided for the muffler. It needed to be thicker so that it would compress better. That's a pretty minor complaint. I did the break in using NON synthetic oil(red container StiHL). After a gallon of gas I switched to STIHL synthetic(silver bottle, and there's less residue. Today I fired up the latest EVO engine, a 15cc, and the new muffler is bulletproof, no leaks. It started right out of the box with only opening the HS needle 3 clicks. I'm still in break in mode, but it is turning a Master AirScrew 13x6 at 10,280 RPM and reliable idle at 2900, this after 16 ounces of fuel through the engine. I know there are tinkerers out there that like to see if they cannot wring something more out of the Manufacturer's product. Problem with this is that its like saying you're a brain surgeon cuz you got a good nights sleep at the Holiday Inn. There are many reasons that certain paths may not be taken, cost, wear, reliability just to mention a few. IMHO, this is one of the best engines to come along in the past 25 years. KKKKFL

Wow! I only have the .5 called for on the tech sheet. AND, it is mounted close to the bottom of the wing. I'll make these mods and let everyone know the difference. KKKKFL

RE: Spektrum Telemetry module and iPhone App.
I'll bet my static hole is too close to the leading edge. I'm gonna have to make up some sort of holder for the tube that drops it down away from the leading edge as well as moving it a bit more forward. Blowing through a soda straw, it registers great, but it is way way too intermittant in the air. KKKKFL

RE: Spektrum Telemetry module and iPhone App.
Is the static hole the second one back on the tube? Mine are mounted to the bottom side of the wing, Usually, I use the front most outer screw that holds down the aileron servo cover plate, but this might not make that static hole stick out enough. KKKKFL

RE: Spektrum Telemetry module and iPhone App.
My question deals with the Airspeed sensor. I now have at least 5 planes with Telemetry, and the latest is driving me crazy with intermittent read outs of airspeed. I have taken to do a pre-flight where I use a soda straw and covering the Pitot tube blow on the straw to ensure read outs. Even so, once in the air, I constantly hear "Airspeed Zero". This is a brand new module, and I've only flown the bird twice, but each time there's no read out while flying. The Pitot tube is mounted out on the wing and extends forward of the Leading edge by an inch. (Maybe this needs to be increased?) Is the position of the sensor with regards to the other sensors important? I have RPM/Altitude/Temp in this plane. KKKKFL

RE: Spektrum Telemetry module and iPhone App.
I do use speech, usually I get Altitude, Airspeed, RPM and temp spoken every 10 seconds. But this last weekend while maidening a new plane, something set off the KLAXXON alarm, such that I couldn't hear anything else. Maybe I had the voltage setting set too low, I don't know what set it off since I also screwed up the Data record setting so I only had about 10 seconds of recorded data. I have now set it up to Record as soon as RPM exceeds 700. Only problem is that if I have a dead stick situation its gonna stop recording even though the RPM gets stuck at something over 1500. This is a known bug, and I hope STi fixes it soon. For now I would be happy if I could change the Klaxxon to something different. KKKKFL

RE: Spektrum Telemetry module and iPhone App.
Personally, I think the radios should be provided with a "Y" cable that one plugs into the Bind/Batt port with one leg labeled Bind and the other labeled power. Every new receiver I purchase gets this addition prior to any installation. I even put a splash of paint on the ends, one White(used for bind) and one Red (used for power) Any bind problems, and you have the pig-tail available. I think this was a tip that Andy passed along. Many thanks Dude. KKKKFL

As I look at it here in my garage I think I'm gonna do something like the Struts you see on an ME-109. They will be airfoil shaped aluminum a solid Piece that ends up on each side attaching 3/4 out on each side Wires would destroy the looks. For the fin in front of the rudder I'm thinking Glass the LE about a 1/2 inch back both sides Will provide pictures when done Kkkkfl

RE: Flutter and air balancing
hahahahaha Thanks for that insight lopflyers. Actually, the foundations of the kit were not bad. However, I found numerous flaws. Here's the short list. Nose gear strut too short - Had to purchase a Dubro replacement Motor Mount not nearly built strong enough for Nitro. - I used fiberglass tape reinforcement along all seams Internal rudder horn - required Dremel notching and Locktite on Allen screw Nose Wheel control Horn constant loosening, too small an Allen screw repaired with Dubro replacement Fuel tank broken at neck seam (leaked fuel) - Replaced tank with Dubro tank of slightly smaller width, slightly longer length. Poor wing design, not really built to be modified - modified to accept Flap configureation albeit they are a little too small Weak horizontal and vertical stabilizer components, poor design - Will use fiberglass to improve strength Nose heavy when built to specifications - Design could shorten Nose motor mount box by at least an inch Poor construction manual Now having said all that, once deficiencies are corrected, the Zlin-42 is a good looking and well behaved (once proper throws are established) model. However, I would NOT recommend it to a friend. The problem is that I cannot find a Low wing intermediate skill Tricycly landing gear model in the .40 to .60 range. Initially, I thought the plane could be flown on a Saito .40 four stroke, thinking the 42 referred to wingspan. Once disabused of this notion, I ordered a NEW Super Tigre .60 ABC which took a couple weekends to tweek to perfection. If anyone has some good recommendation meeting my requirements as set above, send them along... KKKKFL

RE: Flutter and air balancing
I'll try and be a little more descriptive so that all can understand. When I received the kit, the elevator and stab had the hinges in place, just not glued. There was a slot at the back of the fuselage, where the stab would normally slide in. Glue was applied and covering on the bottom cut to allow balsa to balsa contact, but there admittedly was not the usual large flat surface area on the fuselage side where (top where it contacts the bottom of the stab). The top part of the slot extends from just before the rudder hinge back about 2 inches back. If you look at the photo you can see where I have pulled the covering back to expose where the break occurred. In flight, this balsa snapped such that the whole elevator and stab were totally loose, and eventually the entire stab structure was hanging on by the elevator clevis, waggling like a rag in the wind behind the rest of the plane. It had snapped loose of the fuselage and was blown completely out of the slot. Uncontrollable, as it was, I managed to keep it fairly level until it wound up in corn stalks. When we retreived it the stab assembly (elevator plus stab) was fully intact, just hanging off the back of the plane. I was able to twist it around (clevis still attached to control horn) and slide it under the rudder mateing the broken balsa from the fuselage with the remaining balsa piece still glued to the top of the stab. I put a drop of CA in the fracture to "Tack" it in place. Just recall your last kit where you slide a stab into the fuselage slot... now imagine rocking it from side to side violently enough to break the slot apart. The poor design is in the fact that the stab isn't stiff enough, and the glue joint to the fuselage is too thin. Taking a 1/2 wide piece of fiberglass cloth, and removing a 1/4 of covering film from the fuselage side below the stab and the bottom of the stab will provide a better "More solid" bond between fuselage and stab, ( now I will have a right angle of fiberglass providing ridigidity plus a better bond between stab and fuselage) and changing the portion of stab where the hinges go in by cutting it width wise and then adding a hardwood spar will eliminate any flex. Wires would also accomplish this but would destroy the scale appearance of the Zlin-42. Adding weight to the portion of elevator that extends in front of the hinge line places a mass (as in weight) that counter balances the elevator making it less likely to flutter, which is most likely the force that caused the balsa slot to break apart in the first place. Hope that's a better explanation. KKKKFL

RE: Spektrum Telemetry module and iPhone App.
I saw this on my EAA biplane. There is a large windscreen and there was a hole that allowed a low pressure condition to exist inside the fuselage. The best location for the Altitude sensor is in the wing at least 6" outboard of the fuselage. I also get pressure variations as a result of prop wash through the motor mount. As for Air speed, I find the readings vary depending on the maneouver. Straight and level I get readings that make sense, but steep turns, Immelmans, and even loops cause the read out to vary.. I have tried putting the Altitude sensor in a small medicine bottle that has a pinhole vent to the outside, but need further testing to see if this helps smooth the readings. KKKKFL

RE: Flutter and air balancing
Mr. Matt, If you look at the pictures I posted both the rudder and elevator have portions that are in front of the hinge line. This means that as the rear part of the elevator moves to provide "Up" elevator the small portions on each side move down. This causes the airflow to assist the larger elevator surface. Check the pictures out and you can see the same Airbalance on Rudder. There's surface in front of the hinge line here too. KKKKFL

Good to hear my estimates confirmed. The plane in question is nose heavy At the moment so no concerns there. I like the idea of opening a pocket in the Front of the air balance portion forward of the hinge and adding lead Until the elevator stays slightly in an up ele position

RE: Flutter and air balancing
Its pretty easy to remove the entire stabilizer, I just tacked in in place at the field with a spot of CA just for transportation. I would like to avoid the wire approach. I would run the stab through a band saw about a third the way back and then re-glue together with a Hardwood spar about 3/16ths wide. KKKKFL

RE: Flutter and air balancing
There's no slop in the linkages, and the hinges are tight.. the stabilizer in front of the elevator doesn't have any flex despite being 6mm thick. I could install a hardwood leading edge fairly easy, but I don't believe that's the part that is fluttering. I believe that the large amount of airbalance is the culprit as it creates forces both up and down no matter which way the elevator moves. The plane was flying fine when straight and level, but it was pulling out at the bottom of the loop, (medium deflection) at high speed where there was "Pull" on the control horn and the surface started to flutter so bad that it ripped off the entire Elevator/stabilizer. I'm wondering if adding mass to the LE of the tips might help. KKKKFL

Flutter and air balancing
I had a crash this weekend that still has me mumbling. I'm not the only one either. The problem is with the Hobby King Zlin-42 which is a .60 size model. In the build log, another flyer reported that the stabilizer and the fin assembly started "Fluttering" in flight and ultimately resulted in a crash. For me, there were a couple problems with the kit, mostly dealing with poor joints in the motor mount area, and the amount of surface throw. But I had all of these solved when this weekend the Flutter bug bit me. On exiting a loop, someone standing next to me hollered, "Hey your rudder is fluttering!". I think what he actually saw was the whole horizontal stab wobbling. I was able to stabilize and slow, but ultimately stalled into some tall corn stalks. Here's my question. Can too much Air Balance surface cause this? Here's a picture. If you look at the amount of airbalance on both the stab and the rudder its pretty significant. I seem to recall some WWII aircraft that had weights installed ahead of the hinge line. Was this to dampen or prevent flutter? KKKKFL

Even when I put it away, the SYS app shows that it is still there, It is in the list below phone, manager, mail ( I think there were some others.) Now can I tap somewhere on the screen and shut down the compass? Only way I could do it last nite was to power off and back on. KKKKFL

I didn't have any luck with terminating the programs. I don't want to remove them, just stop them from running. From within the SYS ap application are you saying to hit the button at the bottom of the iPhone (Home)? The best way I have found to stop background apps from running is to power off, then back on. I also don't understand the memory read out. Seems that I am using MORE memory when fewer apps are running. Currently, I have 30 processes running after re-starting from cold.. I would like to see what the load is WHILE running the STi app but I don't know how to run the SYS app and the STi app at the same time. KKKKFL

RE: Guru 4 needle valve adjustments
Jaka, I did reduce the nitro... purchased as 10% but more likely, its really 7-8% since half has been used, and the other half exposed to our Hot Hazy and Humid 100 degree weather, which nitro tends to evaporate in. I'm very pleased with the current idle down around 2700 and I have a high idle setting (Trim moved up) of around 2900 RPM all spinning the 12x6 APC. On the ground the tach reads top end of 11,800 and I believe it will unload a bit in the air to 12,800 but will have to wait and see. The plane has full telemetry, so its just a matter of finding a nice day with the wind coming down the runway instead of flying just before a Thunderstorm (last weekend, gusty and direction bouncing around 180 degrees) I also have an APC 13x6 and 13x4 to test as well as a 12x9 pattern prop. Each will be tested in the air to see what the best combination for my type of flying requires. The maiden flight was scary with too much throw on just about all the surfaces, so I've programmed in 3 stages on a switch allowing low, medium and high amounts of travel for aileron and elevator. Just need the weather to cooperate now. What top end do you think the 12x6 APC should deliver? KKKKFL

RE: Spektrum Telemetry module and iPhone App.
I had a curious STi problem this weekend. I've been flying the same plane for weeks now same sensors, temp, RPM, Altitude, Airspeed and voltages. Usually, I have Altitude, Airspeed, and temp of the ESC on aural read out every 10 seconds. So, I get out to the runway, look down, all the gauges are reading, but of course there's no real Altitude, and no Airspeed. On take off the temp is reading as is the Altitude, but I keep hearing Zero for Airspeed. I land, take the plane to a work bench where I reach into the tool box and pull out a straw. Putting it over the Pitot tube and blowing, I see the needles is moving. (I had thought one of the airlines might have come loose). But, when I take off again, I get the same results. Landing once more, I go through the set up turning off the audio read out and then turning it back on. Back in the air, I find that all is working just fine, so the drop out had to be the software in the STi. The fix was easy enough, but thought I might pass along a description and see if others have had a similar experience. KKKKFL

Latest update: Thanks again to those that helped me get in the ball park. I also went from Top flight 12x6 to APC 12x6 and here's the results: Top RPM (Static) with 10% Nitro, and APC 12x6 11900 and low end reliable at 3200RPM but I can get down to 2500 RPM but there is knocking and I don't trust it long term. I'm expecting that in the air, it will unload a bit and I'll see closer to 13K. KKKKFL

Good and easy to understand explanation of antenna's Doug. I have one in the horizontal plane, one in the vertical plane.
