RE: Kwik-Fli III and ST Bluehead G60
FB, i saw some other posts too that talked about kit prices on the bay. i have just heard back from Jeff of HHS and yes, i'm going to buy the kit from him. i like nostalgia, but i like not throwing money away .......my Dad built his KF from the TF kit and there was nothing special about it that would make me spend 300 bones unless i was just a collecter.
Excellent choice Mike! I agree with you about the nostalgia thing, and I just don't get the collecting thing. Kits were manufactured to be built. While I have several old kits that others wouldn't consider building, I do plan on building them. I can't see owning something that'll just sit in a box. They need to see the light of day and air under the wheels! FB

I won't buy plans from hackers if the plans are available from the original source. RCM, MAN, Ziroli are examples. It's too bad that it's so darn expensive for these guys to go after these hackers. RE: Kwik-Fli III and ST Bluehead G60
finally found a Super Tigre G60 Bluehead ABC/Ring with TST and PDP that is in perfect NIB condition. this one is a beat. original plan was to get a Webra 60 or Enya 60 III for the Kwik-Fli, but i'm thinking this one will be perfect for it. there is a Top Flite Kwik-Fli III on the bay right now, but who knows how much that will go for. naturally i could win it by overbidding my rearend off, but i also saw from searching here the HHS makes a kit for the MAN version of the Qwic-Fly. any input from you guys that have been involved in Clasic pattern would sur help me decided....... thx mike
Mike, If track records are any indicators, that kit will go for around $300. For that price you could get a couple of HHS kits. Jeff's kits are excellent and well worth the asking price. I've got a Primus (Taurus) all framed up, also a Kwik Fli and a King Altair for that someday build. The Primus went together very well with the updated construction. The Kwik Fli would be the same. Do a search for the Kwik Fli, there was a thread or two and the builders really like the kits. FB

RE: Hostetler or Midwest Extra 300XS??
Zip, I bought the plans for the Hostetler Extra 300 27%, haven't built it though. Hostetler designed this model thinking on electric power but it works with gas too, he told me. One thing to consider is he designed it with one piece wing. This is not a two piece wing with tube assembly as you would think. I sent you a PM too. Pedro
If Midwest hasn't changed (updated) the design over the years, it too has a one-piece wing. Nice model though..... FB

RE: Acer Super Pacer build
Just a thought on hinge pins that you might want to think about. Instead of using individual pins, use a length of .025 music wire as a single hinge pin. Two 90 degree bends on the outside end and a drop of glue will secure it to the wing tip. You then have a removable hinge pin in case you need to make any repairs down the line. And no, the long hinge pin will not work loose. FB

RE: TOM BRETT'S DESIGNS-UPDATE
As to your other question, I would suggest publishing a story, and eventually providing the AMA with either the originals or good copies of the relevant bits. If you can get this and Ed's bits into M.A. or somesuch you will at least provide a hard copy which can be referenced, and the important bits should be safe in the AMA museums archives. Evan
I would agree with the above thoughts! Especially since you have an "in" with Mrs. Brett. The story could be one of the most accurate pieces of early R/C from one of the pioneers. I for one would like to see all of Tom's models hanging in the AMA museum. Duane: I have visions of Tom's models all the time! [:)] FB

MK MATTLAS 40
Here's a couple of pics (of the plans and a 60-size Atlas) of the latest kit that I came across. I had never heard of this one by MK. The Mattlas 40 looks like a 40-size Atlas and was designed by Wolfgang Matt and M. Kato. I went to the classic pattern images on the Trenton RC Flyers and compared the pics of the 60-size Atlas, and this 40-size little brother is a dead ringer! The kit has been molested but not started, I need to inventory the parts against the plans to see if all the parts are present (looks like they are). It's designed as fixed gear, but the plan shows optional retracts for the wing, no details for the nose gear though. I might do like doxilia and copy the parts and plan before starting the build. Overall build is typical for an MK kit, lots of nicely shaped blocks that require a lot of shaping! Three questions: Does anybody have any info on this kit? Should I go with retracts (lots of extra work), and does anybody know what year this kit was produced? TIA Guys! FB

RE: Curare 40 original MK kit
are your leading and trailing edges notched? that would help a lot. i've heard of flipping the plans and wiping on mineral oil to see the wing. _____________________________ David
What we used to do in the old days, was to lightly rub a light oil on the wing plan. Something like 3-in-1 worked very well as it made the image pop out. After you built the wing, if you hung the plan up, the oil would dry out. If you go this route, be sure to protect your building surface with a layer of wax paper or plastic wrap. If you don't want to spoil your plans, I'd get a copy made and oil that up instead. Just make sure it's an exact copy size-wise.
you could use a wing jig and transfer the spacing measurements from the right to the left side. i like to use jigs or a magnet system for everything possible.
An Ajust-O-Jig would be an ideal way to build the wing. While they are hard to find, it's worth the search. Great Planes sells a wing building jig that would also work. FB

Cees
Cees, what does your response have to do with this thread? It seems to me that whenever you get involved in a thread, you very quickly go off topic and condemn others for the techniques that they use. Why do you insist on endlessly doing this? I used to really enjoy this forum, but I'm visiting it less and less as you continue to pollute it with your "contributions." RE: Ed Kazmurski's Taurus
Another point made in post 1853-1854 by Evan mentioned elliptical wingtips, (based on the shadow on the ground). If this is the same plane, I can show the tips were definitely NOT elliptical...it must have been the shadow angle that made it look elliptical. There is also speculation about the possibility of strip ailerons on a later Orion model such as this one. Attached are pictures of the trike gear Orion at the ballpark, the Orion in the AMA museum, and a detail of the wingtip. Duane

Definitely two different airplanes, certainly two different wings, even the upper wing paint schemes are different. Makes you wonder just how many Orions Ed built, or did he borrow the 'Ballpark' Orion from someone else just for the game? So many questions, so few experts... Evan.
I would agree that they are different models. The wing tips in the newspaper pics are elliptical and not the "standard" Orion wing tips. It also appears that the top of the wing tapers (gets thinner) toward the wing tip. Sure would like to know the aileron configuration of that model. BTW - I have the Grid Leaks article somewhere that shows the tri gear and strip aileron mods. I've posted it before (maybe in this thread) somewhere here on RCU. FB
