RE: RClander T33 for 90 or 120mm edf
I saw Greg's T33 fly at the Noon Demo at the Neat Fair this weekend. To say it was impressive is an understatement! The grass runway is pretty thick there and the plane had no problem getting airborne. It was also pretty windy and the model handled it well. Seeing pictures of the model doesn't give you a true feel for the size it, in person this thing is huge! But to me, what was most impressive was the sound, it didn't have the typical high pitch whine of an EDF, but it had a fabulous 'whoose' sound that was incredible! Oh yeah, it was also fast! Great job Greg! FB

The only really bad thing about the BJ kit is the canopy, it's not even close to the original, hence having a mold made from an original DB kit. FB

Just an FYI, the canopy that Parkflyerplastics offer was made from an original canopy from a DB kit. Can't get much better than that. FB

The OS 65AX with a MACS muffler, APC 11x7 and 15% fuel has plenty of power. As the engine breaks in, the rpm jest keeps getting better. I'm turning 13,300 - 13,400 consistently. Speed is easily around 100mph. I'm really digging this one! FB

RE: Aeromaster resurrected
Guys, Very nice Aeromasters!! I too have one that I'm restoring, well a couple of years ago I was. [;)] I really need to get back to it. It's stripped and ready for final sanding, the original builder changed the wingtips on the bottom wing, so those need to be removed and the original shaped tips need to be built and installed. I also picked up a "new" Aeromaster this past winter. It's about 15 years old and never flown. It's covered in silk and dope and has a new OPS .60 in it. Just need to install a radio system and do all of the usual pre-flight checks. Hopefully I'll get this done this year, got other projects in front of it that needs to be completed first. Ralph, love that pilot figure!! Any contact info to get one? FB

I've put a couple more flights on my P7 and so far so good. All I did was to smear a coat of GE silicone about 3/32 thick on the mount lugs of the unit. You could make it thicker if desired. I also used PFM adhesive to secure the wires so they wouldn't break off. FB

RE: Dirty Birdy ARF
I flew my DB this morning and it was a VERY successful outing! As I mentioned above, my DB is somewhat nose heavy and I needed 3 oz to bring the CG near the middle of the range. It's still too nose heavy for my liking and will need at least a couple more ounces. OK, flight report: OS 65AX, APC 11x7, Cool Power 15%, stock muffler and it's turning a solid 13K. The engine is breaking in nicely as after several flights, it sounded a little rich and I limited my flights to 5 minutes (stock 8oz tank). Takeoffs from a grass field are a no brainer, just keep'er straight and add a little elevator when flying speed is reached. The Hobbico mechanical retracts worked perfectly. Trim needed was a few clicks of right aileron and several of up elevator. The speed of the DB was extremely impressive, it's almost as fast as my P7 (Evo 61NX, pipe, 11x6, Cool Power 15%, 15,500 rpm). First flight was spent trimming and getting a feel for the DB, I also did several stalls and it never fell off the wing, just dropped the nose and mushed straight ahead. Nice! The first landing was a greaser, as the DB does slow down pretty good, albeit it does take a little while cause the airframe is so clean. I'm starting with the recommended throws and ran out of elevator on the flair, moving the CG back will help that and also will help slow it down sooner on approach. The next several flights were nothing less than very satisfying, the DB tracks very well. I flew just basic maneuvers and it did so very easily, loops tracked well and were as large as you wanted, rolls were very axial, but were just a little too fast on the recommended low rates. The recommended low rates, except aileron were too soft for my taste, again moving the CG back will help there. Surprisingly, inverted flight required very little down elevator to maintain level flight. Also, there was very, very little coupling during knife edge. And vertical with the OS 65AX is not lacking at all. Yesterday I put in several flights on my P7 so I have a pretty good baseline for comparision. While the P7 is a great flying pattern ship, it feels just a little bit edgey compared to the DB. Speed wise it has an advantage over the DB because of the pipe. But the DB I think is a little bit smoother and gracefull than the P7. Both takeoff and land the same, and they look simply awesome doing on the deck high speed passes with the gear tucked away! Either way both are fun to fly and I'm looking forward to many fun flights on the DB! FB

RE: Dirty Birdy ARF
Here's mine at the field ready to go after running several tanks. OS 64AX, stock muffler, APC 11x7, Cool Power 15% and after 4 tanks it's turning an even 13k. For the moment I'm using the stock tank, and I timed an engine run and as expected it's a dismal 6 minutes. That means 5 minutes on the timer. [:@] BTW - my DB is very nose heavy, battery (Hobbico 2S 2100 LiFe) is as far back as it can go, gonna need several ounces to bring the CG in the middle of the range. Where is everyone elses balancing? P7, meet your new brother, DB!! FB

Yesterday I put in 5 flights and not a single hiccup! This was the first outing (ever) where there were no issues with the gear. Only time will tell how long they'll keep on working. I think I'm going to give the same treatment to the mains. I'll be flying all day Saturday, so it'll be a good test of the gear. More to come..... FB

RE: Scoop! Hangar 9 Phoenix 7...ARF!!!
Ed, I'm on my last leg (pun not intended) with the Eflite retracts. On my last outing, the nose gear leg broke in the trunnion at the set screw. Of course I found out when I lowered the gear for landing and saw the nose gear dangling in the wind hanging by the steering cables. Needless to say, another belly landing was in order. To try and provide some vibration isolation, I smeared a layer of silicone (about 3/32") on the mount lugs and let it cure overnight. I'm going out today and see if it helps. Will report back later. RE: Scoop! Hangar 9 Phoenix 7...ARF!!!
I called Robart and answered my own question. The good news is the new electric tricycle retracts will be available next week. It called the 590 Series PRS electric and is already on Robart's website. http://www.robart.com/store/retracts/aircraft-weight/6-12lbs/590-series-prs The not so good news is the cost. The mains costs $224.95 and the nose gear another $89.95. And this is without wire struts and axles. The nose wire is $16.95 and the recommended Robostrut mains are at $52.05. So all up $383.90 excluding shipping . I think we can get away without the Robostruts and use regular wire to make it cheaper... at around $350 a set. So the retracts costs more than the plane. I can see this for a scale aircraft, but not for a classic pattern plane... Robarts are great but I don't know how many sets they plan to sell at this price. It is double the E-flite and about 10x the generic electric retracts on eBay (I call them "chinatracts" ) . Is it worth it to spend the $$ for Robarts over e-flite? or just get the e-flites and silicon the wires and be done with? How are your e-flites holding up?
Thanks for the info. I will not buy them at that price, far too expensive. Jason Schulman is coming out with 60-120 size electric retracts soon, they might be worth looking into. FB

RE: E-flite retract water proofing
You're welcome! Good luck with the Eflite retracts, I'm just about done using them as I've had nothing but trouble with them. On my last outing, the nose gear broke in the trunnion during flight, of course I found out about it when I went to lower the gear for landing and saw the gear just hanging by the steering cables. Fortunately no damage during the belly landing. There obviously is some vibration causing the issues. I'm going to re-balance the prop and spinner and see if I can find some rubber to install between the unit and the bearers. Hope that'll help isolate some of the vibs. But really I'm waiting for the Robart gear to be released, or maybe when available, the electic gear that Schulman will be offering. FB

RE: Dirty Birdy ARF
The stock plastic spinner is 2-1/4". I never use plastic spinners as I've seen too many blow apart at the RPM we run these engines at, not very safe. Also a plastic spinner doesn't hold up very well to an electric starter as they tend to get chewed up and then throwing the balance off. Honestly, Great Planes could have supplied an aluminum spinner in the DB kit instead of the plastic spinner. Like ChiefK, I also used a Vortec spinner except mine is 2-1/4" in diameter and matches the diameter of the cowl perfectly. My DB is almost complete and the maiden is scheduled for next week sometime. I hate it when work gets in the way of fun! [:@] FB
