KHochstein Use a small wedge between the former and base of the retract unit. About 3mm should do it.

RE: L39/Wren 44 Pics and video
Dave I have decided to go with JR DS 361. I changed to these on the ailerons initially but found that they would also be suitable on all surfaces. I have not left anything to chance with this one. I don't think £35/£39 a servo is much in the scheme of things. £2500+ is a lot to lose for the sake of one of the most important items on the model. Everything about your model is quality, turbine, airframe and probably Rx, don't skimp on the servos it don't make sense.

RE: L39/Wren 44 Pics and video
Dave Don't get me wrong, I didn't mean to imply that using the Supertec/GWS was skimping. I know nothing at all about them, they could be the best/most expensive for all I know. I just meant generally don't skimp on such important items, or anything if it comes to that.

Dave I'm not familiar wth Supertec/GWS servos, but the torque you state is more than adeqate. The ones I'm using put out 3.9kg.

James Good to hear it was not serious. Mine's ready to fly but I want to change a few servos, so I'm waiting for those. I also have a few commission builds on the go so been to busy to concentrate on the L39.

RE: L39/Wren 44 Pics and video
siclick33 Yes you can laugh about it now, but I bet you had one hell of a tight pucker. I think I can help you with the stuck wheel. Try pressing it further into the well, if it then comes down it will more than likely be that the cut you made in the wheel well for the leg spring is not deep enough. Grind it out until you get to the retract frame. That will ease the pressure so it is not pressing on the fibreglass.

Apache 1/5 Chipmunk help
I have just aquired a part built Apache Chipmunk project from a clearance sale. Unfortunately, there are parts missing and no plans or manual. I would love to finish this model as I know how good they are to fly. If anyone has any plans/manual they have finished with I would be more than willing to pay for them or any cost in sending. Many thanks in anticipation.

RE: L39/Wren 44 Pics and video
Kirk I can only speak for myself. I have had two models neither has shown symptoms as you discribe with air bubbles appearing, but there again I have never had to remove the paint and expose the shell. As for the painting quality it's not perfect I know. At the price I paid for the paint job I never expected it to be. Ok, there may be a few bleed nibs at the tape lines here and there and a few other blemishes. It's a far better job than I could managed and at a fraction of the cost a professional painter would charge. For the price of the model and the great flying characteristics of the plane I can live with the paint faults providing there are no underlying issue with the glassing. I have a crash fus I can strip the paint from and check for air bubbles. My 2p worth.

RE: L39/Wren 44 Pics and video
lozza I have finished the 2nd L39. Wren gave the turbine a health check and all was well. I would not like to put the crash down to any single cause without being 100% sure. I'm not familiar with Simjet.

Paul (JFS-TC) Mine was flying straight and level at half throttle when flutter appeared. (see post 2253+ for details and comment). Give Vaclav a call, you never know if he has a cancelled order or unwanted colour scheme. He CAN be very accommodating.

RE: L39/Wren 44 Pics and video
JSF-TC Sorry to hear of your lose, I can empathise with you. I lost mine after the third flight. I have still not fully identified the cause of the crash. The turbine was sent back to Wren for a health check, which was sent back with only the need of a new mount. (yours also looks knackered) I replaced my L39 with a new one and all the wing and elevator servos have been replaced with JR DS361's (lesson learned) Don't give up, the end result will far out weight this set back. Regardless how you turbine looks, sounds, smells, tastes or spins up I strongly recommend you send it back to Wren for a checkup . The last thing you want is your new model dropping out of the sky because of something wrong in your turbine you have been unable to identify.

RE: L39/Wren 44 Pics and video
Hal If you are using the Wren 44 I would go with Wren's !0mm gap. I believe there has been a design change by Wren since Paul's original mount was built. BVM's paint is fine to use. Don't forget to do the top of the wing under the turbine.

RE: L39/Wren 44 Pics and video
Hal My rudder was also installed. It involves fitting a torque rod and tube through the fus and into the base of the rudder. The base of the rudder has to be hollowed out and a small guide epoxied inplace to allow the "L" of the torque rod activate the rudder. Regarding the probe, I think there is some sort of fluid inside and a new one is needed. I may be wrong.

RE: L39/Wren 44 Pics and video
Hal I'm using 5mm OD carbon tube with 3mm OD threaded rod epoxied inside. The Y piece is silver soldered. Your LMS should stock them.

RE: L39/Wren 44 Pics and video
Ian Yes. I used a piece of 3/8in sq spruce spar the length of the retract base. Cut it corner to corner along it's length which gave me the wedge at the correct angle. Drilled it to match the retract holes and bolted it all in place. The leg does slope towards the front, but I can live with that although it's not scale. A friend also has a Boomerang and get a lot of fun with it.

RE: L39/Wren 44 Pics and video
Ian Yes it fully retracts. On my first model I cut out a slot in the former and mounted the retract on the inside with wedges between the retract and the former to get the angle for it to fully retract. On this model (photo) Vaclav has moved the former further back allowing me to mount the retract on the front. Again, wedges used to get the angle. If you are going to remove the former to move it back, reinstall it at an angle.
