RE: Nelson SS-Q500 wanted
Hey Peter, I tried to take the Nelson muffler apart myself to get the inner pipe out to make it C500 legal. Propane torch, strap wrench, vice grips, etc. Nope... Had to send it to Dave. He cut the canister off the header, removes everything, then glues and screws a new canister on the header without the inner pipe. If anyone has got these things apart successfully, I would appreciate it if they could let me know how. Jeff

RE: 66-012 airfoil
Thanks, Don! I really appreciate you taking time to send me the file. I'll be fine for American thickness and the drawing is already done. I should be able to do a nice tip at 9 7/8". Thanks for the advice as well. Hey Al, I hope you're wintering well. We're dying over here. I thought I'd get ahead of myself and make a wing mold. It might not see a wing this season, but the fuses are coming out better. I would like one more quickee when the season rolls around. Any word on you guys hosting yet? Ed, always nice to hear from you. Like Al stated, we only need 11.25% of chord here in the prairies, but I thought if I plan on going through the trouble of making a mold, I might as well make it thick enough so that if I do ever go to a race down south, I'll be legal. Thanks for the help, Jeff

RE: 66-012 airfoil
All good questions, Don. I need it to CAD a quickee wing to mill some plugs for composite wings. I'll make my own molds from those. Skins aren't necessary, but full airfoil shape is, ie. leading edge being there. 9 7/8" chord. I appreciate your call for clarification. I'm new to doing things like this in a computer world, so if there is anything else you think I need. Let me know. I would have normally just made a mold from one of my existing wings, but no survivors are trim free. Apparently this CNC stuff is the way to go anyway. Thanks, Jeff

66-012 airfoil
Hi there, Could anyone send me a dwg file of a 66-012 airfoil? jsmartin*sasktel.net (replace the asterisk with a @) This is just so I don't get spammed. Thanks, Jeff

RE: How to color Epoxy
For that application, You can tint the epoxy with tempera powder. An art store will carry all the colours you need. It will thicken slightly, but the heat will even it out.

RE: T-tail Quickie
Hi guys, I know there is no magical formula. I'm not even trying to get extra speed. The same or close would be nice though. I just have a full stock of quickies (miracle #1) after this season, and thought it would be fun to experiment with something different. I'm in the process of cleaning and organizing my shop (miracle #2) and am looking for a project when I'm done. I have an Ashley to put together, but that's about it and winters are long here and snow is already on the ground. Plus I find the experimenting fun. As for the launch disadvantage, I was thinking of reinforcing the fuse at the tail with some carbon tow during lay-up and putting the tail on a little bit ahead of it. That way, there will be a two or three finger "handhold" that projects out the back to launch with.

RE: T-tail Quickie
Thanks Kevin, but I'll be pulling the fuse from my own mold, so I really just need the dimensions of the surfaces. I have built two Mad Dogs, which were the best flying quickie's I've had. One was mid aired in it's second heat, the other in it's third. Thank fully, one mid-air cut off the tail, and the other destroyed the nose. I mated the two and have a pup. Care to name that plane?! As for the "Thunderchicken" vs. Thunderquickie I swear I read that name somewhere...

T-tail Quickie
Hello all, I was thinking about putting a T-tail on a new quickie, but need some dimensions. Does anyone have a Taipan or Thunderchicken they could measure? I need the fin width and height, as well as the chord and span of the tailplane. Thanks, Jeff

RE: vacuum pump from Harbor Freight
Expense for vacuum is just not necessary. It's nice to have some luxury, and great to experiment, but vac is vac. This is what I use. I build a bag out of dropcloth and butyl tape (usually used to seal trailer windows). I start by evacuating the air with a shop vac, then use the hand pump to bring it down to whatever vac I want. It will pull 28" or enough to do composite wings. I have to go and give it a few pumps every so often to bring it back down to whatever vac I want. I would like to add a reservoir and probably will this winter. This is how I make my pylon wings and I've been very happy with the results. Happy building!

1-2-3? Only if Kev U. stays away from my plane around #1! Start chanting together as you pass North Battleford "No more mid-airs, no more mid-airs" and don't stop till you get to the field. See you there...

RE: Engine tuning
On the 8.75X7.5NN I'm getting around 19200 on the ground. I really can't tell you the speed, but a guess is topped out around 225 Kph? I think that's around 140mph for you stars and stripers. We race the short course for quickee.

RE: Engine tuning
Probably not. We run on the same fuel as you guys, 15% Powermaster. Kev, I found the best readings with the 8.75X7.5 APC with a 800-1000rpm pinch up from the exhaust line. I don't know if this translates into the best air speed yet with a W or NN prop. Are you coming to P.A. this weekend? Weather looks good. I like what Bill says: experiment, experiment.

Has anyone ever assembled the Jamara Pitts Special? It's the 53" 90 size ARTF. I need the assembly instructions. If you have some, or know where I could get them, it would be much appreciated.

RE: Hi-start a Terminator?
Thanks for the replies. I was considering adding some CF or fiberglass strapping tape under the sheeting. You mentioned it wasn't designed to produce much lift? Could someone explain this please. It has a S4083 airfoil.

RE: MDS and Perry carb
I bought a complete MDS .68 from a friend and received this engine as a "parts engine" as a bonus. There was nothing wrong with the parts engine, but he had sold the carb. Just curious about the Perry set up because I had an extra one in the "goodies" box at home.

Latest RCM&E Mag
Yea, it's built like a tank. Don't worry too much about it. I thought mine was pretty heavy too, but it feels very light in the air. Maybe because of the lift from the rotors. I'm no expert, but a .46 is way, way, way too much. I used an ancient almost worn out os .25 and it flies well at 1/4 - 1/3 throttle. Altitude is definitely controlled by throttle on this baby, as it climbs like a witch at even 3/4 throttle on the .25. Plus I think there might be a ton of tailweight issues with a .46.

Dragan flyer
Dragan flyers are built 5 blocks from my house here in beautiful Saskatoon. Zenon, the inventor, is one of our club's members. The Dragan flyers are awesome! With the new batteries, you can get ton's of flight time and the camera option is very cool and the image is more stable than I thought it would be. Yea, I know it sounds like an ad, but these little critters are very cool to fly.

PLanking
I just finished building the Kestrel in question and flew it for the first time last night. Take offs were very smooth and landings were almost zero roll out. Everything was well until on the third flight, one of the rotor blades on the left decided to part company with the rest of the aircraft. Roll control was unavailable after that and it landed (?) in the top of a poplar 50 ft up. When I did get it down, no thanks to my chuckling clubmates, the only damge was to one other rotor blade and two holes in the covering. The planking referred to is the strip planking on the upper front part of the fuse, as well as the centre wing section. I used strips of 1/8 balsa about 1/4 inch wide. Glued them on with CA in strips, then filled the gaps with drywall compound. This was a very enjoyable build and is a blast to fly.
