RE: Brown B-3
My bad guys. I am lookimg ofr the Brown B-3, not the B-1 or B-2. I have a very nice fiberglass Brown B-2 with many hours on it and am looking for something much more rare. The B-3 fits the bill but information is REALLY scarce. Thanks for the ideas. Gordie

Brown B-3
In the mid 30s, Lawrence Brown built several one off racing planes, probably the best known is the Brown B-2, Miss Los Angeles. Later he built the Brown B-3 with enclosed cockpit. I have read it was actually in the film "Casablanca" but also read it was destroyed in a fire. I would love to scratch build a 1/4 -1/3 scale model but information on the plane is pretty scarce. In the 70s, Jack Stafford made a kit for quarter midget racing (.15 ci) and I actually have one of those I bought new. Is there a source for photos and an accurate 3 view available somewhere? Gordie

FunTech products are imported into the US by James Oneal at OMI, the same folks that make the Viper heads for OS and YS 91s. Gordie

RE: Compensator kit available?
I have tried to find one of the original Southern RC kits for the Compensator for several years with no success. They have appeared on EBay but I seem to have always been too late to bid on them. I did find one of the 40 size Gator Flea kits in my closet when I moved last year but really have little interest in building it. Gordie

RE: Flatouts - Fatigue cracking?
Guys, these are really indoor airplanes. They will not stand up to landing on grass. I flew a Reflection outdoors off grass for 6 months BUT I left off the wheel pants and made sure the wheels rolled very freely. Even then, if I landed hard, I would break a gear block loose. Flying in the gym, absolutely ZERO problems. Gordie

RE: Trouble Maker
I appreciate the thoughts and effort. Since I have lived in Tallhassee for many years, flew with Rhett Miller when he was in high school, and had 4 different Compensators. I was hoping to build the Southern RC kit for nostagia reasons. I have a couple of good pattern models now, my YS 110 powered Excelleron, and a YS powered Focus 2, both of which will out fly a 60 powered Compensator but I surely would like to find a kit to relive the good parts of a somewhat mispent youth. :) Gordie

RE: Trouble Maker
I still have a NIB Gator Flea kit that I bought about 15 years ago at a swap meet. I have been trying to find a NIB Southern RC Compensator kit for several years without success. A couple have shown up on EBay but I am always a little late finding them (story of my life <G> ). Gordie

RE: Kirkland A6 Intruder
I would love to find one of the original Southern RC Compensator kits NIB. I built several of these when I was young and, since I lived in Tallahassee, and Rhett Miller flew them then and was also from Tallahassee, I got along quite well and had pretty good success. When Rhett left for college, I went on to Tipos, Atlantas, and Auroras but the Compensator was my first love. Gordie

RE: Kirkland A6 Intruder
Wow, I remember several of these models and they had the Webra Blackhead 60 in them. Later I saw OS 61s and ST Blueheads in them The Compensator was a related design as Rhett Miller and Jim Kirkland were good friends and Jim helped Rhett when he was young. Gordie

RE: Xcelleron 90 and First Pattern Choices
IMHO the 140, 150, 180 would be overkill. I have a muffled YS 110 in mine (no pipe) and with an APC 16-10 and 30% Wildcat helicopter fuel, it has unlimited (at near sea level) vertical performance. The OS 120 AX two stroke might also be a good choice but I have no experience with it. It's really cool to come off the runway and go vertical until you just about cannot see the model. I got a good deal on mine and added an Icepoint canopy for a different (better in my opinion) profile and the Icepoint LG for more ground clearance. The model is very docile and is just a pleasure to fly but will do everything that a pattern model is supposed to do. I can actually even hover and 3D it a little but that is not its forte. Gordie

RE: Excelleron 90...WHAT ENGINE!?!?!
My Excelleron has a YS 110 with a 16-10 APC prop and Wildcat 30% Heli fuel. It will come off the runway and go straight up until I cannot see it any more. I have run YSs in my helicopters and pattern models since the 70s and have always found them to be plug and play. I ran a YS91FZ in my G-Trick for years, replaced the 91 with a 110, destroyed the model in a b1rd collision (the turkey buzzard lost!), replaced the G-Trick with an Excelleron and have been thrilled with the performance of the model and the motor. I have flown the same model with a Saito 125 and it was fine but I prefer the 110 for simplicity and fuel efficiency. Everyone has their own opinion about stuff, and everyone elses stinks, except mine <G> Try the OS and see if you like it. It might be great. Gordie

RE: Excelleron 90
Having flown both the Showtime (with and without the wing fences) with OS 120 AX and the Excelleron with YS 110, I much prefer the Excelleron as a much more neutral and positive airframe. I have a very minor rudder to elevator p-mix in the Excelleron to hold knife edge and no rudder to ail mix at all. The Showtime required both and the ail mix was pretty substantial (11%) at max deflection. I suspect you could turn the Showtime into a moderately successful pattern model with time and effort but the Excelleron is darn good right out of the box. Now, that said, I used the canopy and LG off an Icepoint for more side area (and better profile) with the canopy and more ground clearance for a 16-10 prop with the LG. I mounted the fuel tank midships (thanks YS) and the CG stays put througfh the whole tank. Gordie

RE: Did pattern fliers used to use variable pitch props?
I had one on a Curare and it worked OK for the time. it did not have beta pitch available as I recall ( 11/0-8 or so) but could go flat pitch for down lines. It worked but really was not worth the effort at the time. Now that we have computer radios and you could do a p-mix with the prop, it might be interesting. Gordie

RE: Venus II
Hmmmm............ I have an Excelleron with a YS 110 using 30% heli fuel and it will go straight up until I cannot see it any more and will hover pretty easily so I don't feel short on power. My YS 91 used 1 inch less prop diameter and flew well but the 110 is definitely better. Gordie

RE: ARF's of the old Classics
My problem with this is that I DID build and fly in those times (late 60s, early 70s) and ALL of my pattern models, Super Kaos, Dirty Dirdy, Intruder, Cutlass, Compensator, and later Curare, Tipo, Hippo, and Atlanta all had retracts. I am aware that the models can be made to fly well with fixed gear, but damn, they don't look the same, and the ONLY reason I would want one now is nostalgia, not flight characteristics. I currently have an Excelleron 90 with a YS 110, Futaba 14MZ, and fixed gear that flies amazingly well, better than any pattern model I owned in that era but it's NOT the same. If/when I do build another Compensator, (I had 3) it will have a 4 stroke and retracts. I know that excludes me from SPA but, Oh Well. I curently compete in F3C and get plenty of competition there so a nostalgia model would just be for my enjoyment anyway. Anyway to get back onto the topic, yes, I would be interested in an ARF or SARF Compensator. Gordie

RE: Taping Hinges on Flatana
Apparently GP had a run of plastic parts that were very brittle and have offered replacement parts to some folks. I have two of these models, a Turmoil and a Reflection with the stock hardware and they have been perfect. All surfaces will fall under their own weight and I can get massive throws without loading the servos up at the extremes. I have several other models that have tape hinges and they do not work nearly as well as far as load for the servos. I prestressed all my Flatout hinges by putting them on and off the rods several times before installing them in the foam. As I said, they have been perfect since and work well even under some serious abuse (hitting the gym floor pretty hard, hard enough to pop the surfaces off). Gordie

RE: Excelleron 90
I fly off a grass runway about 400x60 ft. Excelleron is a piece of cake to get in and out. The YS110 with 15x10 prop slows down nicely and is very predictable all the way to touchdown. I also have the longer ICEPOINT landing gear for a bit more ground clearance. So far, so good. Gordie

RE: Excelleron 90
I did not reinforce my LG mount. What I did was to brush in about an ounce of slow cure epoxy into the plate and mounting area. With everything actually glued together, it seems to be fine and is holding up well, even on less that perfect landings. I like this model. Gordie

RE: Excelleron 90
My Excelleron with YS 110 is a "kind of" sport pattern/freestyle model so I am carrying a little more throw than I would if I were going to campaign it in pattern contests. Even as is, with a little expo, I can get through all the AMA schedules. For a pure pattern project, I would use much shorter servo arms and use the full range of the servo ATVs to get max resolution in the system. The model is WAAAAAAY better than I am, so good in fact that I will probably spend the time to go through the entire trim procedure, even though I compete primarily in F3C helicopters. The model is very good and deserves to be set up and trimmed correctly. Gordie

RE: Which Radio for GP Flatout Reflection?
I flew the Turmoil for a while with the stock motor/gear box and it flew fine, hovered knife edge loops etc. BUT the brushless Rimfire has WAY more power. If you have a small brushed speed control, you can fly that until the stock motor gives up, then switch to brushless. Gordie

RE: Which Radio for GP Flatout Reflection?
Slide them on but pull them straight off to open the hinge just a fuzz. Do not slide them back off. I do it four or five times to prestress the hinges. Gordie

RE: RC Universe Profile Biplane (Flatout) Build thread
Yes, me too. I drill the control horns, not the hinges. I would suggest you slid a rod into the hinge and then pull it straight out to prestress the hinge but other than that, I have never done anything special. Gordie
