RE: Copperhead Venom 45
I have a nearly brand new V45 from back in the day when Copperhead was supporting them. I've run about a gallon of fuel through this thing but it was not quite enough to pull my 16 lb 28% Edge 540T around but it did run great and was very reliable. I replaced it with a G62 clone that does great. I still have the engine but it is kind of an odd size (and weight for its size) to go into many planes. Make me an offer and I'll get it to you with a full money-back guarantee if you don't like it. It would be nice to have a spare or a second to run in another plane. I'll let it go cheap. Let me know if you're interested. I might even have a couple of props that I'll throw in for free. I believe I have a Xoar 21x8 and a couple cheapies. Thanks, Gary

The Yak flies great with the 120 OS and is smooth as butter and has good power for 3D flight. However the Edge with the MLD28 definitely has more power. It will hover at less than half power and has good pull out. I have about 2

RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine
I'm at 5300' and am running an OS 120AX getting 9000 RPMs with an APC 17x6. Is this engine comparable in performance? I'm curious to hear what kinds of numbers you guys get with this prop so I can compare. I could probably use a few more ounces up front too so this engine might be a nice replacement for my glow engine. Is anyone getting close to 9000 RPMs using an APC 18x6W because as I recall, that is about what I got when I was running my OS 160FX and that is the kind of performance I'm hoping for. Thanks, Gary

RE: XYZ ENGINES
I just took a look at the new XYZ 50-HP at [link=http://www.southeastrcengines.com/see_010.htm]this site[/link] and although the engine looks pretty sweet in general, the mounting "ears" seem thin, as in the first release of the DL-50. With the DL, there were lots of reports of those ears breaking off which led to the redesign with much beefier ears. Has anyone had any experience running the new XYZ 50-HP and is this really a valid concern? The picture may be misleading and perhaps the ears are plenty adequate. Thanks, Gary

Well, I have to balance the bad with the good. I sent Tim a PM recently letting him know I was having a problem with my muffler and he replied within several days, despite being in China. He asked for my address and said he'd get one out to me. I told him to make it a low priority because I'm able to get by with my "quick fix" and I'm in no real hurry. I've never had a problem getting in touch with Tim and he's always been very responsive. I don't know what to say. I'm very courteous to Tim and he always treats me the same way in the limited dealings we've had. Good luck, Gary

RE: 2.4 GHz and ignition interference
I was the one who originally asked the question and I ended up making the change. I found some problems in my servo extensions (cracked insulators around the wires in places) and replaced all of those. Almost all the interference went away but there were still random glitches that occasionally occurred for no apparent reason. I also found a crack in the insulation of the receiver antenna. I taped that up but it didn't seem to help. I bought a 2.4 GHz Futaba 7C and since then things are rock solid. I'm not sure if the problem is being masked or if there was possibly a problem with the old 72 MHz receiver, which was about 2 years old (Futaba 7 channel dual conversion). I have flown the plane several times since the conversion and have been ecstatic with the performance. I finally have confidence in this plane not losing control due to servo glitches. Gary

I've got a Copperhead Venom 45 that gets about 6950 at 5300' elevation running a PZ 22x8. I had an Xoar 21x8 that spun about the same. I have a plane that needs just a little more power. Even though the XYZ is 50cc (as opposed to mine being 45cc), I'm wondering if it will keep up with or exceed the performance of my V45. If not, perhaps I'll look at another engine. Thanks, Gary

2.4 GHz and ignition interference
If I have interference in my system, will switching to a 2.4 GHz system eliminate my problems? I can't find the source of my interference but I can only walk away from my plane about 10 paces with the engine running with the antenna down (72MHz) before my control surfaces and throttle start to jitter. I've read about people switching to 2.4 GHz - does the noise not bother with the receiver at that frequency? Thanks, Gary

RE: Copperhead Venom 45
I ran my engine today for the first time since May 2007. After I primed it (about 10 flips with the choke closed) and got it to pop, I opened the choke and it fired up on the 5th flip. I have to say it ran like a champ. I ran for about 15 minutes with my Zinger 22x8 (I busted my Xoar 21x8 on my last flight in GA - near sea level) at around 5200' here in Albuquerque and achieved a max RPM of 7050. I purred at idle on 1600 RPM. As soon as the winds die down (it could be June, LOL), I'll take it up and see how it hauls my 84" Edge 540T weighing in around 15 lbs. It did pretty well in GA but I don't know if I'll be able to get the same results at altitude. I think I'd like to get another 21x8 Xoar before I fly again as it seemed to pull better than the Zinger 22x8. I'll be back... Gary

RE: Let's try again DL-50
One thing that is cool about leaving in the throttle spring is that if you lose your servo or linkage or something, the spring forces the engine back to idle. That allows you to land right away without having to run out your tank of gas at some throttle setting higher than idle. I like that better than cutting the engine and landing without the prop turning, totally deadstick. Just some food for thought. Gary

RE: Peak Models 84" edge
freebird1, I would not be afraid of a 5" CG. Is that with or without your cowl? If it is without your cowl, you'll be fine. Your elevators will be a little more sensitive at 5". Even at 4.75", they are a little on the sensitive side but that's the way I like it, especially with some expo dialed in. The control surface you want to most careful with is the elevator. Keep your throws low at first. You only need about 2" defection for tremendous authority. Even with that little bit of deflection, there is plenty of authority to keep the nose up in a hover. It is much more responsive on higher rates, but that makes it more difficult on landings. When I hover, I use about 40 degrees of throw in my elevator. As far as your ailerons go, use whatever you feel comfortable with. I typically fly on low rates, which is only about 1.5 - 2.0 inches of deflection at the trailing edge. The rolls are a little on the slow side, but that's fine with me. If I want to keep from torque rolling in a hover, I use the high rates because it whips it back around nicely to keep the belly of the plane away from me, the way I feel most comfortable. I keep the rudder on high rates at all times, which is as far as it will go without hitting the elevators. I hope that helps. Let me know if you need more info or if I need to make something more clear. I really like the way the plane flies, but it is a bit of a handful in the wind, surprisingly. I'm attributing that to the large wing surface area and the "fatness" of the wings in general. The plane has a lot of drag, which makes landings very easy because the plane will float like a U-Can-Do and is difficult to stall, which I really like. Gary

You carry great looking planes. If I would've discovered your site before my last purchase, I probably would've ordered your Edge (I ended up buying the Peakmodel 84" version, which is a good flier). As usual, after I bought, I continued to look at what I could've had, which is when I ran across your site (Valley View). I can assure you that when I'm in the market for another plane this size, I will be in touch. I'm really interested in the Extra 260. Is there any chance of you carrying them in the future? Thanks, Gary P.S. Sorry for the threadjack, but I'm sure some of you DL owners are interested in the 260 too.

RE: BCMAEngines
Many people are flying the US Lite with the OS160. That is a 26cc engine, but it is glow. It would be much more comparable to a 40cc gas, as opposed to a 26cc gas as far as power goes. My 160 will spin an APC 18x6W at around 9400 rpm (I don't have a US Lite, however). I don't think the 26cc gas can even run a 16x8 at that speed. I'd be very surprised if the 26 is enough for the US if you plan on wild 3D flying. The 40 will probably be much better. Gary

RE: GSP Giles 202
Jon, I forgot to mention that on the rudder I had a 68oz-in GMS servo (cheapie, but worked flawlessly). If I had a 3004 on the rudder, he likely wouldn't have had the rudder authority necessary to keep it in a nice knife edge. Yes Andy (Wagas) is a fantastic pilot and can do just about anything. He too wished we had it on video, he said he relived that flight many times in his mind. He, along with the 15 or 20 other people at the field, was very impressed with his performance. He felt bad because it was my plane, but I assured him I was grateful that he had the sticks instead of me because I wouldn't have gotten it down safely. It was spectacular Right now I'm flying an 84" Edge sold by Peakmodel that weights about 14.5 lbs, running a Copperhead Venom 45cc gas engine. For servos, I'm using Bluebird 620MG (ailerons, elevators) and 630MG (rudder) and Futaba 3004 on the throttle. Check out these specs: http://www.bphobbies.com/view.asp?id=V518150&pid=U093661 http://www.bphobbies.com/view.asp?id=V518150&pid=U569935 Like everyone else, I was thinking "too good to be true" because the price is so low. I've flown a gallon of fuel using these servos and have been thrilled with their performance. A lot of people say to avoid BB servos, but they are made in Taiwan (not China) and their track record is very good. I was skeptical at first, but I'll use these in the future. I've talked to guys flying 35 and 40% planes with these servos with great results. Here's what the rep I spoke to said: > > Blue Bird uses Japanese components. They are also > > made in Taiwan not China. Who would have thought > > that made in Taiwan would > > mean better made? LOL. We have sold over 60,000 > BB > > servos in the last three years. RE: GSP Giles 202
Before mine was crashed (the right front wing bolt pulled through the fuse and snapped the wing tube) I flew it with Futaba 3004 servos all around. It did fine with those cheap, plastic, low torque servos, I never had a problem. I don't recommend that you do that, but I'd be surprised if what you have won't be fine. Some people like overkill, but I don't think it is necessary with this airplane. About the crash, even with only one wing, my buddy (he was doing a snap roll when the wing let go) was able to bring it to the ground with relatively minor damage. The engine block broke free and I lost the landing gear and the left elevator, but the left wing was vitually undamaged. He plans to fix it so he can fly it another day (when he gets time). You would've been pretty impressed watching him fly the plane with only one wing (it knife-edged very well, and for quite a long time). BTW, the wing that broke free, floated to the ground with no damage. Gary

RE: Copperhead Aviation Venom 45-30
Marc, It does have electronic ignition. This engine proved to be a very good match for Wagas' Extra 300. He is currently running a Zinger 20x10 but is getting ready to try a Xoar 21x8. I'm waiting for a report myself but he's very busy right now with a few other things. I am running mine on a Peakmodel Edge540T (they currently don't have it listed), it is 84" and weights about 14.5 lbs. I'm running a Xoar 21x8 and am really starting to like this airplane. The engine has always started easily and doesn't shut off until I tell it to. It is proving to be a very good engine for my plane as well. I've got a gallon of fuel through it and it seems to be getting stronger with every run. It is hard to beat this engine, especially for the price. It looks great and runs even better. This is my first gasoline engine and things could not have gone smoother. I'm a very satisfied customer and I think you will be too. Gary
