RE: Four Star 40 ARF
Where did you find the four star as an ARF? I would like the 60 ARF. Thanks Joe

RE: New Great Planes Escapade 61.
I was thinking of the Escapade as a second plane. It's only a little more than the 4 star 60 kit. Is this a good choice? I would be happy to build the 4star, but the Escapade is such a nice looking plane. Thanks Joe

GP Escapade
GP Escapade as a second plane with an OS75AX? Not much more than a 4 star 60 kit, which I would have to build.

I just received an OS65. The mixture screw in pointing up. I can see that it can be rotated 90 degrees. Is this just a personal preference? I would like to keep it pointing up. Please explain. Thanks

HEAD REPAIR
I have an engine that I have managed to strip the glow plug threads. Does anyone know where I can get this repaired. Repairing it myself is not an option. I recall reading once of a man in southern california that does this kind of work.. Anyone? Thanks It is my first engine I ever bought (a Como 40) w/only about 20 hours on it. I do not want to toss it. It runs sweet. Joe

RE: Work Bench Finish
Too late now for the Formica. The contact adhesive you apply to the Formica and the plywood top you have now will not bond because of the finish you have on it now even you used stripper on it. I would 1) try the suggested clearcoats, 2) Put thin gauge steel on it and utilize it for a magnetic building board as well. 3) Start over with particleboard or medium density fiberboard (MDF) and apply Formica or the steel to that. Crap will just soak through the cork. If you start pounding pins into the clearcoat you will be right where you started when you spill on it and it soaks in through the pin holes. If it were me I would put the steel on it. A magnetic building board is just awesome and the steel doesn't need to be glued or screwed to the workbench. Hope this helps. Joe

RE: water based acrylic lacquer
great for plastic models.. glow powered planes,, will melt right off. Search the web for rc painting. I've read about clear poly sanding sealer, then water based enamel, then fuel proof clear like Nelsons clear. Also try research on automotive paints. If it doesn't say fuel proof on the can, i would not risk it. I understand some guys wanting to try different paints. Fuel proof paints are quite expensive, however what isn't. Hope this helps... Joe.

RE: Newbie Servo Questions.
Also I would buy a radio system that includes the TX, RX, servos, the TX and the RX batteries and the charger as a package to start off with. At least a 6 channel if you can afford it. A 4 channel is good to start if you are on a budget. It will control alot of planes. As you learn about TX's and RX's and servo's etc. and what goes with what and you progress with planes you can make those choices. Guess I'm trying to say start simple,, good luck. Joe

RE: Newbie Servo Questions.
A good servo is a reliable one. I have old Futaba S148's that are still in my trainer. I decided to take it out the other day to fly. When i charged the batteries for it everything was fine. Let it drain the batteries and charged it up again. When I checked the servos for correct direction one of the servos went crazy. It hummed at first, then it did it own movements. Researched the problem and it was proportional something or other. It was fried and had reached it's lifespan. Now I don't trust servos that I have had for awhile. For $15 to 30 dollars apiece for a servo, its cheap piece of mind. I have read and heard that digital servos are just plain nice,,but.. $90 apiece ,,, maybe for a high dollar plane or if you can afford it,,, go for it. I use the servos I buy for the plane I put it in. I buy new ones for new planes. I would just be really bummed if I lost a plane due to servo failure. Just not smart to me when they are so inexpensive to buy. For a trainer I would buy standard ball bearing servos. If the servo connector will plug into your receiver, they will work. (just standard servos). I was referred to Servo City. It's worth a look. Good luck Joe.

RE: Are Pattern Planes Good 2nd Planes?
BTW, I sometimes talk myself into an ARF, only to discover that it's DISCONTINUED. It makes me mad as he##. I would love to discover some old man with a barn full of kits. I would be divorced because I would max out my $60,000 credit card limit and buy everyone I could. Guess you can tell I am forbidden to discuss airplanes in my house. I can hear her now... I HATE AIRPLANES... lol good luck .. IF I ever do discover that barn, who would like to join me???

RE: Are Pattern Planes Good 2nd Planes?
A jet for a second plane??? I learned to fly with a Pilot QB40S. Nice plane. I had difficulity soloing because it was a sport trainer. Trainers now days just float forever. My second plane was a Supersportster 40. My third plane was a 4 Star 60. Wish I had gone with the 4 Star for a second plane. I fly the 4 star mostly. I learned that a larger size plane is easier to fly. I'm looking to build a warbird next, if I can make up my mind what I want. Then... all this talk and looking at the discussed planes... well you know what I mean.. so many planes and too little time. I personally have never cared for pattern planes, but that is just MY taste. BTW, I still have the QB40S with a Como 40 and a Futaba Conquest, all in great shape. The Como 40 purrs like a kitten. I take it out for a fly every now and then, just for memories. I wish you luck on your second plane. Just do research and ask ALOT of questions. Only YOU know your abilities and I would pick the one you like. If it's too much to handle when you try to fly it, try another one (I don't think you can have too many planes) My buddy went with a pattern plane for his second plane and then to a P-51. (He was braver than me) however, I have never crashed or lost a plane. Looks like I am writing a book here, so, good luck with your search and happy flying. Joe

RE: Four Star 60 Plans
Thanks so much for the reply. Didn't think the plans were so big. Have to build a bigger table. I love the idea of using magnets, however I don't understand how you place them on the parts to be glued. Anywhere online where I can research (i.e. what kind of magnets, cost, etc. Does the metal top eliminate the door from warping. I was planning to build a desk type cabinet with drawers on each side and double up 3/4 in. ply for the top. If I put metal on top of that it should stay flat forever. Thanks for any more info. Joe

I am finishing up a recover and fine tuning of my QB 40S that I dug out of the garage. Got the ol' Como 40 purring like a kitten. Can't wait till it cools off to go fly it.

RE: What happens if arf and kit building prices meet?
Then the cost of an arf vs. a kit will be the same? I think I like to build more than I like to fly or I just enjoy building alot. I don't think I would buy a mass produced airplane. What if something was forgotten or done wrong. I put alot of work in a kit and I know everything is as it should be. Also someone else looking at your work as you progress into the build helps too. The joy of that maiden flight, thinking that you built this, cannot be replaced. I don't care if kits double in price, if I want it I'll collect cans if I have to, to get it. I am worried that kits will disappear. If they do I will buy plans and start hoarding balsa. Just my 2 cents. or maybe a nickel. Cause a nickel is only worth 2 cents now?

i sanded some off each side and it worked perfect. plenty of material left for the mounting bolts. it helped center up the engine bolt holes to the motor mount to boot. i'm pleased with the results. thanks

RE: engine modification
it's an old como 40 from the 80's. i've hardly ran it. it's going in and old Pilot QB40S that i just recovered. the motor beams are alot wider that the ones on my OS46. the mounting holes are about a 1/4 of an inch from the sides of the motor beams. i noticed that the holes on the 46 are close to the edge of the motor beams. thats what gave me the idea

RE: engine modification
i can't open the engine mount any wider. i need just a little narrower width on the beam mounts or i could trim the engine mount but that would require me to cut down the sides of the engine mount

can material be filed or sanded off the engines mounting beams to reduce the width of the beam. If so, how close to the mounting holes could you go

Simple fix. Do not buy an airplane that was assembled in China. Build it from a kit yourself. Then you know its right. How is it said..... If you want something done right......

thanks for all the replies. Was very helpful. I think I'll go with the Futaba 7C . (no way I could even mention a $500 radio system for one of my "stupid planes" to my wife) and a SuperTigre G75 for power. So, could I set up bomb drops with the 7C? Thanks
