RE: Top Flite Staggerwing
ORIGINAL: Staggerflyer
ORIGINAL: badazzgti03 quick question ....would a Saito 300 Twin work with this model?? http://www.horizonhobby.com/products/300-twin-cyl-aac-with-muffler-z-SAIE300TL#t2
The Saito 300 Twin would actually be way to much for this plane. It is physically a large engine. We have a Saito 240 Twin, and it was checked for fit. Way to big. It is also way to heavy, besides being just to much engine. The required prop will not clear the ground, and even a small throttle change would twist it over on it's back. The 300 is designed for much bigger aircraft. It would work great in a Byron Staggerwing, if you could find one, as well as a Ziroli one. This is not to say someone won't insist on trying it. Good luck!!
The 300 is more motor than necessary, but it would not be grossly overpowered. It would also not be too heavy. This plane needs the nose weight. Prop clearance is also not a problem. While the 300 does have substantial torque, the suggestion that even a small throttle change would be enough to cause this plane to flip onto its back is absurd. However, I do agree that it's a much better match for the Byron Staggerwing. I've got two of those and they're outstanding planes. Also, Saito didn't make a 240 twin, they made a 270.
ORIGINAL: badazzgti03 what about a Saito 170R??? i know the 200R is an upgrade from it but what really is the differences??
I flew mine for two years with the 170R3. Once in the air, it's a good combination. Takeoff power is marginal, especially if you have a grass runway. I upgraded to an Enya VT-240 and have been very happy with the extra horsepower.

Many thanks for your advice.....funny,in the photo,I agree it does look too nose ''heavy'', but in ''real-life'' it didn't look as much as that !!!I have to change out one of the batteries at the ''firewall'',so will do that first and then see what weight I can remove to get her SLIGHTLY nose down. I have re-checked all the control throws and they are as the ''high'' rates as stated in the manual + 1/4''max,I 've added to them.Expo is set at 30%.......so hope that will be good. Thank you again for your advice, all very much appreciated.......watch this space for anothe c of g pic !!!! Cheers............Nick (UK).
Looks "fine" to me.

I have run in my Saito 200R3,pleased to report that there appears to be plenty of power + it sounds great !!! I found out that the idle mixture was too rich,it was giving me a bit of trouble with causing a plug to ''go-out'' at extened lowish RPM's......I have now in addition to the ''mixture'' fix added an ''on-board'' glow system............working great. I know that this subject has been talked about alot.........CORRECT POSITION FOR C of G !!! ........I would just like to confirm with you all that the position I have is correct by the ''flying-results'' you have all acheived.I have set mine to 5 1/2'' from the leading edge of the lower wing.At this point she balances with a slight ''nose'' down attitude ( Wheels are retracted ).If I get it right,I have posted a photo of the position of the c of g.I will set about 30% expo and will increase the upper limits of the control throws to start with. Thanks to all for the thread. Cheers.............Nick (UK).
Looks "good"

It was marginal for our field's 300' grass runway. Takeoff was always scary. It would have probably been fine on asphalt. I put the 1.70 on a Pacific Aeromodels clipped wing Monocoupe and installed an Enya 2.40 v-twin in the Staggerwing and it got to be a whole lot more fun to fly.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
ORIGINAL: N1EDM Can you remove the glow plug? This idea has been around for a while, so I can't take credit for it, just passing it along. Remove the glow plug. Then, get some string or thin twine that can be pushed into the glow plug hole. Cram in as much as you can. Use the softest line that you can get, and leave a 'tail' outside the glow plug hole. This should let you bear against the piston and head and remove the screw. Go gently and use the best allen wrench you can on that spinner screw. This is no time to gurn that socket. And use GENTLE pressure!! Avoid risk of damage to the piston and head. Remove the nose cone, replace the screw (probably avaliable from Home Depot), and remove the string. The old screw might have too much Loctite to clean off. Chase the threads on the prop nut to clean out any other residual Loctite. It's probably a 10-24 thread but don't take my word for it. It could also be a 10-32 thread. Hint: some cheap twine will leave 'hairs' behind which could require you to disassemble the engine to clean out... Use good twine (and not thread) to avoid that. Hint #2: I've never had a metal spinner come off, and I've never used Loctite on that screw, though I make sure it is fastened down securely. Hmmmm, using W8YE's idea about using heat to soften the loctite isn't a bad idea either. Use Cotton twine, by the way, not synthetic. If you use heat, you run the risk of melting the twine if you go too far with the heat gun. That won't be good inside the engine cylinder. I didn't see W8YE's post until I posted mine. We must have been burning the ether at the same time writing our responses. In an extreme situation, you can get a piston locking tool from Tower http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXATDA&P=7 that might help, but my thinking is that this won't be necessary. If you do wind up using the tool, remember that word ''GENTLY''. Let us know how this works out for you, Bob
Filling the cylinder with after-run oil and then re-installing the glow plug would work better than string. The hydraulic lock will be much more positive. Applying heat to the loc-tite will definitely help.
ORIGINAL: N1EDM Hi Guys, A while back, I wrote a post about having trouble with getting my muffler through my H9 Cub cowl. As you can see from the picture, my muffler is a little too close to the fuse/cowl and I'll have to cut a lot of this away using the existing exhaust manifold. I know that it looks like I could squeeze by, but that's just the angle that I took the photo at. Any ideas on extending that manifold perhaps 1/4'' or so so that I don't have to chop the daylights out of the cowl?? The engine is a Saito .82 - I put the extra power in there so that I could use the Cub on floats. C'mon, fellow geniuses.... I could use an idea or two here... [:D] Bob
Go with a Turboheader and ask them to make you a small extension.

RE: P-6E Curtis hawk (build thread)
ORIGINAL: Roary m I could use some help here with powerplant selection. I have, with exception to the Saito's, most of the glow stuff mentioned here and I can't make up which is the best to use. I was going to drop in a YS 140 FZ, then I read where the OS 120 would be plenty. I even noticed where one plane had a YS 120 in it and the flier didn't think it was enough. My OS 120 is the supercharged one but I am confused. I need this guy to do aerobatics but not 3D. Any input? I even have an Enya R120, a great engine, but he does like smaller props. I want to stay with 4 stroke for sound but I do have the 120 AX as well as the ST 2300 and 160 FX. Sorry for all the stuff thrown in here but I have never have seen a thread so all over the place when it came to engine selection so my discernment is being tested here.
Oh good, you're going to reopen this can of worms! Here's the first of many widely varying opinions: Mine has an OS FS 1.20 w/pump and it's more than enough engine for sport flying and scale aerobatics. A small amount of weight was added to the firewall to balance it. In my opinion the plane would easily fly in a very scale manner on a good .90 four stroke. However, I have not tried that combination.
ORIGINAL: Old Fart Good advice raven.I've just begun running the new fa200r3 radial, sounds sweeter than the best looking green eyed redhead i ever saw.Problem is it nearly always runs on just two cylinders. It's had three short five minute runs at or below four thousand. After the first run i popped the rocker cover off the cold cylinder and the intake pushrod had popped out of it's cup, fixed that and it still won't fire on that pot, rechecked the valves too.I was 5 turns out on the main as per the book,so tried as low as three and can't clear the cylinder.Plugs are good, fresh fuel...what am i missing??..apart from my pretty green eyed redhead:):)
Let me guess which cylinder keeps going cold... facing the front of the engine, is it the one on the lower left? I've had the same problem with a 170R3 and it requires a glow driver for any throttle setting below 1/3 (more when you're running it rich for break in). I use SonicTronics/McDaniel glow drivers on all my Saito radials and use only NiCd batteries. NiMH will not work.

RE: Pacific Aeromodel Clipped Wing Monocoupe Build
RHarding - rule of thumb for fuel consumption on a glow engine is 1 ounce of fuel per cubic inch per minute at wide open throttle. Your 16 ounce tank will give you 12 minutes with throttle management but you'll be cutting it close. I'd go with a 20 or even 24 if you really want to fly for that long. No idea on cylinder head temp.
