ORIGINAL: CGRetired Well, I hate to say this, Gary, but, I don't recommend beginners building batterry packs at all. There is to much to learn in just learning to fly without a beginner trying to manufacture a home-made battery pack. CGr
I tossed the idea of where to post this, here or the Tips section, and couldn't make up my mind where to go. I have no problem with it being moved.

RE: Just bought a slow stix and a Spectrum Dx6i and having trouble
ORIGINAL: meloman408 Oh and almost forgot in response to this from Gary Harris have any idea how I would go about about doing this ''For the Slow Stick or just about any GWS stick plane, you need to run some strapping tape on the wings leading edge's for strength and possibly some fishing line from the wing tips to the tops of the landing gear''. Like exactly if I should make wholes in the wings and where or what kind of equippment I need to do this. I mean I think I have the right tape as for fish string I might have some sewing string I can maybe cobine string s for added strength and stability I guess. And lastly If its not a good idea to go fly this plain then what do you suggest, I mean where do I get a flight simulator. My plan was just to take it real easy like barely learn how to lift off the first day but yea as for the landing am real unsure on how I'll go about that. For the Slow Stick or just about any GWS stick plane, you need to run some strapping tape on the wings leading edge's for strength and possibly some fishing line from the wing tips to the tops of the landing gear.
Hi meloman. One of the most important things is to keep the plane as light as possible especially if your running the standard motor/battery combo. As far as strengthening the wings with strapping tape and fishing line, I would take the standard strapping tape, split it down the middle and run it on the underside of the wing about 1-2" back from the LE. This will help with wing fold up when you start doing rolls. [:)] To add more wing strength, you can tie some 3 lb. fishing line to the uppermost part of the LF wire, and run it to the wing tips. Punch a hole through the wing tips, run the line through and tie it off to a piece of bamboo shiskabob stick about whatever length you think you need. 1/2" or better. Make sure you don't tighten the line too much pulling the wing tips down and changing the dihedral.

RE: Just bought a slow stix and a Spectrum Dx6i and having trouble
Several mistakes made here brother. When you buy online, don't expect much help from your LHS. And I don't blame them. We would assume you never flew before as SeamusG is pointing out. You WILL crash even though it's a Slow Stick unless you some amazing natural talent, but if you did, you wouldn't be asking these questions. Sorry if we come across somewhat harsh, but it's the truth. For the Slow Stick or just about any GWS stick plane, you need to run some strapping tape on the wings leading edge's for strength and possibly some fishing line from the wing tips to the tops of the landing gear.

Just joined the left top wing half onto the center section using Titebod. After that drys I have a few odds and ends yet to do before final sanding and as much as I hate sanding, Ill start the lower wing in order to keep my interest and while that glue is drying, Ill shape and sand the top wing close to it's final shape. I'm not going to try and totally finish sanding the wings until I'm ready to check the wings incidence. [image]http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii62/flounderflinger/001pup-1.jpg[/image]

Of course they are no good for high power applications, a small plane with standard analog servos will do fine with this battery.
They are alkalines. And I'm curious. How do you test their capacity and do you really return them to Walmart if they don't meet your expectations? What is your testing criteria?

Thanks Chevelle. Good advice. The reason I'm going so heavy with the Titebond is because this wing has a lot of flex and I want to distribute the bending and torsional loads as far away as I can away from the joints.

RE: Build your own RX battery pack.
Now we need to talk about battery chargers. Obviously with higher capacity battery's, that Wall Wart that came with your radio gear is of no use now, not that they ever were with RX packs. They might be fine for your TX pack, but I would never trust one with my RX pack and a plane I spent several months to build. If you already don't have a good peak detection charger, GET ONE! Here is one suggestion for a charger. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXVRS6&P=0 Another note is, the slower you charge, the more capacity you can get into your pack. And your less likely to overheat your pack. As a rule of thumb at least for me and RX packs, I charge at half the mAh rating. In other words, if my pack is rated at 1500 mAh, Ill charge at 750 or so. Although some may disagree with me, I also cycle my NiMH's. I want to know how much run time I get during discharge.

RE: Build your own RX battery pack.
A couple things to note that I think this guy missed. While "Tinning" the wire, he didn't show using any flux. Use a rosin core flux before adding your solder. And on the battery's themselves, scruff up the areas that you will be soldering to with some sandpaper or something. Put some flux and the battery's and tin those posts. I don't know what that anvil thing is, so dont get one. And one of the most important things is, is to have a high wattage iron, and do NOT over heat those cells. If you can't get the solder to flow within 3 seconds, stop and come back after the cell cools. Eye protection should always be used and building your own packs should only be done by experienced people who have above average soldering skills and are aware of all the safety precautions.

RE: Build your own RX battery pack.
A high wattage soldering iron with a large tip is very important. Ill look on youtube and I'm sure somebody has done a instructional video on how to build battery packs. Ill get to that later. Battery bars. Highly recommended not only for a better contact surface, but to add strength between your cells. http://www.cheapbatterypacks.com/product/47/CBP-SC-BAR.aspx Wire and your choice of plugs is up to you. Silicone is best. http://www.cheapbatterypacks.com/Products-Listing/64-Silicone-Wire.aspx Plugs? Take your pick. http://www.cheapbatterypacks.com/Catagories/63-Plugs.aspx

RE: Build your own RX battery pack.
A little back ground on me. I have built hundreds of battery packs in my years of racing RC car's, so it's easy for me to build packs and for those who are not comfortable building packs, you can have them built for you. This topic is about building your own packs because your pack may not end up being a standard 4 cell flat design depending on how much room you have, and how big your cells are. Your build may require a 3 cell side by side configuration with another cell on top, or in another location. There are way too many possible configurations that you may need to try and cover here. For my BUSA 1/6th scale Pup, I will be using a 2/3A cell like these. http://www.cheapbatterypacks.com/product/23/123/Elite-1500-23A.aspx and for my 4*60 that I had to add a full pound of lead to on my last build, I will probably go with something a little bigger. Like these. http://www.cheapbatterypacks.com/product/23/119/Elite-2400-45SC.aspx More to follow.

Build your own RX battery pack.
I'm currently building two planes that I know Ill have to add weight to the front in order to reach a good CG. When you add lead, it's considered dead weight and adds no performance value. And then I put in a wimpy 650 mAh RX pack that I hope makes it through the day without turning my plane into mulch. IMO, that makes no sense. Why not put in a larger capacity battery pack to get you closer to the weight you need, and not have to worry about having enough capacity? It's a no brainer to me. More to follow. I'm worried about timing out before I can all this info in. [:)]

You can always build up a bellcrank set up like I did on my Alpha 40. I used a piece of fiberglass in order to insulate any EMI back to the RX. I had that problem with my 4*40. [image]http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii62/flounderflinger/yyy.jpg[/image]

RE: Sig kit
ORIGINAL: my05monte Just picked up my first kit today. It's the Sig 4 star 60 which it seems is one of the best for a first-timer like me. I have a Sig LT40 arf that I flew the glue off of and a few others. I'd like to put a 4 stroke on it and the plans say I should have an engine before building the fuse. My questions are: 1) Are there any modifcations or areas that need more strength 2) What size 4 stroke engine would let this plane be a sunday flier 3) Can ca glue be used all on the wing sections or would you use tite-bond
My last 4*60 had a Saito 100 on it and it pretty much had unlimited vertical with that engine. Flew great even at 9 pounds. The one I'm building now I will be using a Magnum 91 on it because it was cheap and I have had good luck with Magnums. As far as glue goes, whatever you want. It's an awesome plane. You might want to beef up the areas around the landing gear with some tri-stock, and move as much weight forward as possible during building. The plane builds really tail heavy and I had to add 15oz. of lead up front. With my new build I'm planning on building my RX battery pack from sub C Nicads like the old school car guys used to use in order to add much needed nose weight that actually has a purpose. More MAH.

RE: BUSA 1/6th scale Sopwith Pup build.
I got side tracked a bit playing with other toys, but I'm back on the board. I finished the top wings center and am now doing some rough sanding and gluing up the starboard wing half to the center section. Not much to report but some items to note. This is not a beginners kit. [;)] There things like gussets and stuff that I haven't found yet that are shown in the instruction manual photos, but may not be found in the instructions or on the drawings. This is not a kit to be built in a hurry and at least for me, it's a good idea to step away from the board and come back later. I'm seeing things I missed before and I have read the manual forwards and backwards before starting. Even boo-boo'ed here and there.
