RE: December Tower Talk ARF's
Tower Hobbies has done several things for the RC consumer. They forced the LHS's to lower their prices. But I live in the 4th largest city in the US and the closest LHS is a 40 minute drive away. I come from 18 years of RC cars before getting heavy into planes and in those years have seen many race tracks and hobby shops close down because of online shopping. Tower gets the blame but the truth is?

My list might be slightly different so be gentle with me. [X(] IMO the most important tools for building planes, or anything in life is your mind and your hands.

I my have to put Buzz Lightyear on a diet. lol .  What size of battery are you using ? Whens the maiden ?
A diet. lol [:)] The battery is the standard Futaba 600 mah. Ill be maidening her as soon as the wind dies down here. Yesterday it was gusting to 25.

RE: First Kit 4*40
I changed out the landing gear from a Big Stik 40 with 2 1/2" wheels, to the stock LG and 3" wheels. I am down to an inch and a quarter of prop clearance with a 12x6 MAS prop but have lost half a pound. I think that will be ok as long as I grease my landings. I'm at 4 1/2 pounds without the airlon control rods and horns dry. The the CG ever so slightly nose heavy with the 4 cell receiver pack mounted behind the servo tray. I hope that the extra half an ounce of controll rods and horns will bring the CG right in the middle of the main spar. I should be finished in a couple of hours. On a side note, I love this kit and enjoyed sharing my build with yall. [:D] Ill have pics of the finished plane tomarrow.

RE: Sig Fourstar 40
ORIGINAL: N1EDM HI Gary, How did you get those? I tried to 'back into them; but couldn't. I did get the links to work for me... at leaste for the fuse and wings. I think that there might be one more link. I was able to save two of them to file (the third one is not part of the instructions) but one of those that I saved made my PC hang. Had to go out and come back in a few times. Thanks again, and if you could, would you let us know how you found those links? I've been looking for Sig manuals for years... and these are the next best thing. Bob
Mike Lee! :D

Check out post #132 of moondoggies. The picture on the right. Otherwise, nothing really needs to be done. It's a very good plane.

RE: First Kit 4*40
ORIGINAL: Insanemoondoggie  Yes the stock gear has held up fine. I beleive it,s the only piece on my old 4* that did,nt bend or break .lol I was also suprized by how strong the wing is ,it took one heck of a beating over the last few years  and only needed minor repairs. But the fuse seemed to take most the abuse , and I think it was more epoxy ,than wood.  The plane weighed 6 1/2 lbs , when I retiered it.  I have several Saito 1.00,s and your right , they are sloppy pigs ,but are hard to beat for power to weight ratio.
Thanks. I bet that LG I have on now weighs a quarter pounder more than the stock one.

RE: First Kit 4*40
I had the Magnum on an LT-40 and loved it. After a day of flying it would take about one paper towel to clean the plane up. Today with my 4*60 and the Saito 100, it took half the roll. lol I was gonna ask you, how is the stock main LG on the 40? Strong enough? At first I put on a Dubro and it was WAY too tall. Right now I have one from a GP Big Stick 40 on it and it still looks too tall and goofy.

RE: First Kit 4*40
I won't be maidening the 4 star 40 tomarrow. I rushed through to get her finished and realized, I need to triple check everything at least twice! [&:] With the reciever pack behind the servo tray, I am ever so slightly nose heavy. But I havent checked the lateral balance yet. Ill fix all that after I get over the "Kit building burnout syndrome" [:(] It came in at 5 lbs flat but it's dark so I cant get any decent pics of the whole plane.

RE: EPOXY, A STICKY QUESTION
ORIGINAL: AH1G As I understand it, the longer cure time allows the epoxy to ''soak'' further into the material to be bonded. It also maybe that when it takes longer to cure the chemical reaction creates less heat and components of the epoxy make a stronger adhesive. Anyone have a better explanation?
If that is true, then a thinner epoxy would soak in deeper than a longer curing time epoxy would. Like thin CA would be over thick? FWIW, I don't buy into the slow epoxy hype that a longer curing one is stronger over the other. However, it's nice to have 30 minutes or so to get those tail feathers just right before the hardener sets in.

RE: First Kit 4*40
ORIGINAL: Insanemoondoggie  That looks like it well worked out really well .  Are you still going to maiden tomorrow ?  The maiden on mine was the easiest I ever done. One click of down elevator and it was flying hands off.  My has a Saito .56 and vertical is unlimited , it does slow down some after a couple 100 feet ,but still climbs. It came out weighing 5lbs 1 oz. . I,m using a big 6 volt battery and think I could of got it under 5lbs if I used a smaller battery . Like I mentioned earleir , the roll rate is much better with the wing clipped one bay , but what I like most , is it took out the balloning effect my stock 4 Star had.  I highly recommend this mod ,as the old gave me fits.
Ill be using a Magnum .52 FS and yes, I should be ready to fly tomarrow. I didnt clip the wings on this one since I'm still new to flying. Im hoping to keep this one as stable as I can over things like roll rates. My 4*60 balloons alot but in a way, I like that. Its helping to teach me how to land better I think. Self taught and I guess I have about 50 flights so far, so stability is important to me right now. lol My next kit is the SSE and that will be my HotDog.

RE: First Kit 4*40
Since I changed the design from a single airlon servo to dual servos, I had to make some modifications. One of those is to drill holes through the ribs to run the servo wiring. Normally most guys would use extensions for the servo leads but that takes fairly large holes to fish those connectors through. I decided to hardwire my servos in so I could keep the holes through the ribs small, and save a couple of bucks on extensions while I was at it.

RE: First Kit 4*40
ORIGINAL: Insanemoondoggie  Nice looking 4 Stars. I just finished and maidened mine couple days ago. I knocked out 1 bay enlarged the elevator and rudder and reinforced the fuse behind the wing saddle . Handles very nice and clipping the wing made a big difference in roll rate and it does,nt float near as bad as my old one.
Looks great bro! I'm working on mine now. Hopefully Ill be ready by Sunday.

RE: Four Star 30?
ORIGINAL: Hawkeye Do you really need a Bridgeport to cut lightening holes? Seems a Dremel would work just fine. ...Steve
I wouldn't, no. But I have one, so why not? Plus I can do a much cleaner job with the mill since I plan on covering the fuse with a lightweight, transparent covering. Of course for the wing, Ill have to use something heavier and stronger.
