RE: How much were we at risk
Thanks, So at least a Spektum TX can throw out a sufficient signal only using 4 cells down to 4.4 volts. Is that basically due to the 2.4 technology over the old 72 MH tx technology?

How much were we at risk
Flying with a buddy, I noticed only 4.6 volts on his TX (Spectrum 5x?) He had 4 1.5V rating NIMH batteries. I'm not familiar with Spectrum or even 2.4 radios, I only use 72 MH 8 cell TX NIMH/NICADs. But, old worrywart me, I suggested he change batteries and the new dry cells 1.2 volts read out 6.5V on the TX. I used his transmitter and flew about a 6 minute flight. So, were we at risk of a crash during this short flight with the original batteries? Thanks!

RE: GP extra 300 cowl painting
It is tough to do with that dang Lustercote which doesn't really match the monokote colors anyway. But for best results use 3M automotive paint tape to mask off the area to paint and learn to peel off the tape at the right point to avoid rips or pulls in the paint, say about 45 minutes after painting. The Lustercote must be well warmed which is easy to do in this hot summer and put on in several thin coats or you will get the runs. Good luck!

Well, it is an "ex-warplane" but for only $110 you get a 40 size P-51 Strega: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXGGM2&P=7 It is good quality and builds fast (except for the fairings which take some care) and can be flown with a .46, .90 or 1.10 racing classes. Do a RCU search on the plane or RC Groups search for more info and some pictures, etc. [:)]

Well, you have more than a casual interest in RC and this project! If you don't know how to fly please become associated with a club/trainer and get trained before committing your Kadet to the sky. We want you to stay in the hobby and not get discouraged when you crash (took me a year to get back in after crashing my Kadet on the sixth flight). Being trained will minimize the risk.[8D]

If the cowl is thin FG and very flexible that might be why there are cracks. I've had to reinforce cowl joints before painting to insure it doesn't crack again. Prime and try wet sanding and adjust as necessary

RE: Better cowl for GP Cub
The Hangar 9 1/5 scale cub cowl is about the best of ARF cowls because of the nice size simulated engine cylinders and fair air scoops. Even with that I sectioned the cowl vertically to make it a little more narrow like a real cub's, and repainted it. That helps reduce the squarish look.

RE: Rudder on takeoff help
Push the rudder to the right to counteract the torque of the propeller. I've had to do this with a 60 size Super Sporster, and currently with a Phoenix Strega. Sometimes it is significant right rudder, but you should eventually develop a feel for the amount.............with slowly letting it back off as you lift from the ground. I'm not considering any cross winds, but the torque effect remains dominate in most cases.

Hi 70x7, I've not flown the CHamp, but adding ailerons might be too much weight addition to make it a nice flying model. There are extensive threads on this over at R C Groups about modifying this design, though. You might look over there for some answers or for that matter encouragement.

Do a RCU Search on "Windex" for further discussions. Basically you have to have the Windex that contains ammonia to get the Monokote adhesive to adhere. Then with an iron seal down the edges. Addtional insurance would be to line-paint the leading edges with a little clear fingernail polish.

Specifically remembering D Day it is interesting to recall the roll of the U.S. Navy destroyers in supporting the pinned down troops during the early hours. RE: Hangar 9 Piper Cub 40
The problem as I see it comes from the scale wing strut system is set up for the full length version. The struts are made from metal and the ARF has built in wing attach points. You would have to cut and reweld the struts and redo the wing's attach points which I am not sure would be on or near a "closer-in" rib. You can't ignore redoing the struts because they are essential to support the wing. A lot of work!!!!

RE: Top Flite p 47, ok for a first plane?
One other thing about P-47's as well as P-51's, P-40's, and just about every other model of a WWII fighter is they are heavy compared to their wing size. So they have to fly faster to stay in the air and also land faster. When the engine quits they don't glide well at all. If they slow down they fall and are hard to save without significant damage. It takes a cool head to stay ahead of all of this. Do you think you could train enough on this first plane to avoid problems? I recommend the Avistar if you want to start and advance fast with an instructor. Its wing is semi symmetrical but with a light wing loading so you can do a lot of training from basic to advanced with an instructor. http://www.towerhobbies.com/products/hobbico/hcaa2016.html

RE: Top Flite p 47, ok for a first plane?
Not a good idea, but anything is possible with enough money. (IE multiple attempts = multiple planes, radio components, and even engines as they are totaled in crashes) =$$$ Extreme patience and attention to detail along with in depth research into how to have the most reliable engine possible, the correct servos for the P-47, setting up a remote fueling valve, glow plug ignitor, etc. is also essential to tackle a first plane warbird. And that is after assembling the P-47 with the correct balances and control throws. Oh yeah, the retract system set up.......another thing that can go wrong. Are you willing to do all of the research or will you pay to have someone else do that? Do you really want all of that complexity? And then you have to learn to fly it. Here is where an instructor with a good buddy box system is invaluable. Are you the type that LISTENs to the instructor and retains all of his teachings? A simulator is also good to learn coordination, but is not the same as reality in the end. Learning to fly RC involves incurring some mistakes which quite often means crashes or at least mishaps. this is why it is best to learn with trainer type models. You don't have your heart and soul in a trainer so it doesn't hurt when it is damaged. If you try at least one trainer first, before that P-47 you won't regret it.

RE: Saito FA 91 in a 12# Cub?
I get this data from a R/C Report magazine test using a zinger 14x6 prop. R/C Report was located in Huntsville, Alabama where the altitude isn't extremely high so that helps the numbers. The test showed 162oz. thrust at 9,100 RPM or ten pounds. My OS Max .52 with a 13x5 in a 7 1/2 pound 1/5 scale cub produces about 6 1/2 pounds of thrust. There is not much up side performance and I have to really get a head of steam before looping it.

RE: Saito FA 91 in a 12# Cub?
I would vote for your .91 Saito. Glow .91s put out about 10 pounds of thrust which on a 12# cub seems about right. Throttling back for a quiet cruise is satisfying while still having some reserve power.

RE: RX LiFe's left connected is OK???
Full disclosure: I once fried a $80 receiver by plugging it into a battery lead with a reversed polarity so I’m hyper cautious here……. (OK,dumb to some). I checked my two installed LiFeSource batteries after the weekend and there has been no voltage decline. But, they were in just two wire switch harnesses (non-heavy duty) so the white wire issue is not present. I will be using my LiFe charger Tenergy TB6 B, to both balance charge and straight charge by directly connecting it to the battery balance and “Deans leads and not through the switch harness. So, I don’t think I need to fight the white wire issue that way. Now in my planes with heavy duty switches: My Hobbico heavy duty switch harnesses have a connector lead to the battery with only two wires (red/black). But the charger connector lead coming out of the switch is three-wire as well as the connection to the RX being also three-wire (WHITE). So Joe DeLateur my battery has only a two-strand black/red lead so I should be OK to leave it connected even though the switch has three-strands to the RX. John4648 I don’t have any regulator or other electronics, just a HD switch so I should be OK leaving the batt connected. Johnfly, I am uncertain about what you mean….will the battery become nonfunctional (due to being drained) or the receiver become nonfunctional (fried)? Do you still state your warning now that I have clarified my switch harness construction (two-wire strand to the battery)? ?? Thanks for all of your patience! This info might help some others set up their systems.

Seems like there is more complexity than I thought. I am running Futaba equipment with Hobbico heavy duty switch harnesses. No regulator. Digital servos. 72 band. Maybe I will have to closely monitor the battery for a while after flying to see how it acts. THanks.........
