Well, I'll make sure that the engine is well oiled and placed in a plastic bag. I have a bottle of Klotz oil that would do just the trick. As for running it, we'll see what my dad wants to do with all the nice stuff he bought, before we make a move. I asked a few questions around yesterday and apart from tearing open a spray can of ether, the kind that's intended to start diesel trucks, (after having released the pressure inside of course) I am not sure I can get some liquid ether in Quebec.

Old N.I.B. ED Diesel Racer Mk. III engine
Hello all! I am not familiar with this part of the forums, because I know next to nothing about diesel engines. But my Dad recently bought part of a man's estate and it so happens that that man used to own a hobby shop in Arvida, Quebec, Canada. His name is Doris Galarneau and many men my age were taught to fly control line models by this man, in high school. One of the most unusual items in the lot is this engine, a ED Diesel 2.49 Mk. III Racer. I did a little research on this and found some information, but my dad and I would like to know more about it. I figured this was the place to ask. We are not interested in selling it. We may try to run it at some point. Maybe we shouldn't, because it is brand new in the original box, and maybe running it would reduce its value or something. It looks like it is brand new, all the parts are moving freely, I can't see anything wrong with it. The box has seen some wear and tear, it was probably on display in a store for many years. What do you guys think?
ORIGINAL: dooleyje The money you waste buying the 400 will pay for a bunch of Trex parts and a simulator [X(]. If you get the 400 the parts will not match so you will actually spend a lot more money in the long run. I suggest that you train on a simulator and then you will be surprised how fine you will fly the Trex. Besides, we all have to sacrfice to the heli god once in a while [:(]. If you crash it then learn what caused it and learn from it. Helicopters are brand new again when you repair them. Have Fun!!!! Jim [:D]
I wholeheartedly concur 100% with this post!

What 12V batt to power Lawmate 1000mW Tx
I just ordered a Lawmate 1000 mW Video transmitter and it needs 500mA-h at 12V to operate. I was wondering what is the best choice out there to power it? Is a 11.1V Li-po close enough? Would be nice if it did, since I have a 2000mA-h 11.1 Li-Po in my inventory. If not, I guess I'll just have to buy a 14.8v pack. Thanks Georges

RE: 4#3b out of the box setup
Hi Andy! You are right. The flybar VS rotor blades position argument was a bad one. What I meant is that the higher the blades, the more stable a bird is. (also depending of course on the weight that's suspended under it) And then you have to put the flybar somewhere, and if there is room under the blades, thats good because it will keep the shaft shorter. I should not have said it like it was a rule or something. Also I realize that my post may have seemed pontificating, which was not my intention. I got sucked in by your definitive statement with which I don't agree: "This heli is squirrely and unstable." In my opinion that small heli is a little gem for its size, (and price) and it was as stable out of the box as my T-Rex 450, and way more stable than my Blade CP Pro. Except when it's in ground effect. It is very light and unstable when it's hovering less than 6-8 inches off the ground. And last, generally speaking people buy those small RTF helicopters and expect to fly them out of the box without prior training. They are flyable out of the box, which is different from : "anybody can fly them right out of the box." Edit: typo

RE: 4#3b out of the box setup
A helicopter is a pendulum. The longer the pendulum, the more stable it is. On a toy like the PiccoZ, the center of lift is relatively high from the center of gravity if you take into account its smaller weight. The higher set of blades produces less lift than the main set, but still the center of lift is higher that if there was only one set of blades. This gives a lot of stability, but the tradeoff is that the helicopter will oscillate like a pendulum when it is going forward at some speed. As HansV pointed out, stability is traded for maneuverability on a four channel helicopter like the 4#3B, since you will need to go forward fast at some point, and you don't want it to fly in a pendulum movement while doing so. Notice that on a fighter jet like the F-16, the aerodynamic center is lower than the center of gravity, because the main wing is mounted very low on the fuselage. This makes it very unstable. So unstable in fact that it needs a computer to keep it flying. But it can also turn on a dime, which is expected of a fighter jet. Notice also that most 3D RC helicopters have the blades mounted under the flybar, as low as possible because we want it to be as maneuverable as possible. On more docile machines like the 4#3B, the flybar is mounted under the main rotor blades, because we would like a little more stability than on a 3D machine. Do not expect a 4 channel heli to be easy to fly at first.

RE: Walkera and China
I ordered a 4#3B from eHIROBO in Hong Kong on the 20th. They sent the parcel on the 23rd and it got here in Quebec yesterday on the 28th. At the same time I ordered from eHIROBO, I ordered a few items from Tower Hobbies and got the parcel on the same day that the parcel from Hong Kong got here. Tower Hobbies delivered faster than their quoted delivery time, so no fault there. It just shows that the Earth is getting smaller and smaller.

RE: Q: Where to put a 1m Antenna cable on a T-Rex 450?
One ring should be enough. On my 450, the antenna exits the frame under the receiver, goes right back through the vertical fin on the tail, then up front through the antenna tube. It's held there with a small plastic tie.

RE: Q: Where to put a 1m Antenna cable on a T-Rex 450?
As skarn said, those glitches are often the result of a dirty ESC and a ferrite ring is probably the best solution. Just cannibalize an old computer cable, you find those FCC lumps on just about any keyboard, USB and printer cables. I tried rerouting my antenna many times until I had a major glitch that caused a 75$ crash. I installed a ferrite ring, and my receiver is rock solid ever since. Don't wait for a major earth wave, install a ferrite ring.

RE: testing a gyro??
ORIGINAL: 321 Are you saying that when the heli, engine off, is sitting still on the ground, that the rudder servo is twitching (not just buzzing a bit)? If so, that is a don't fly condition and the most likely culprit, in my experience, is the servo. A servo swap is the easiest test of this and then once the twitch is resolved flight test very cautiously and low until you're confident the gyro also operates properly. Otherwise, if you don't want to flight test the gyro, your option is to send the gyro in to have it checked out.
I agree with that assessment, swapping servos on the tail should be the first thing to try. Then remove the gyro from the line, plug in the servo directly in the receiver, and also swap the tail servo lead with another servo lead on the receiver. Just don't forget to tie down the bird when troubleshooting snags like that.

RE: T-REX or blade 400 ?
If you plan to stay in the hobby, I think that a good radio is the best investment. Now what is a good radio is another controversial subject, but a 200$ -300$ system is more than enough if you buy right. Once you have that, you are not restricted to ARF machines. The radio that comes with the Blade 400 seems to be an OK unit according to the initial reports, so buying that machine could allow you to move up afterwards. My only gripe with E-Flite is the high cost VS low quality of their replacement parts. Because of that, I am certain that buying a T-Rex is more bang for your buck. I have a T-Rex 450 SA. It is the "plastic" version and in my opinion, it flies really well. At least it is more than enough for my level now and also for the foreseeable future. I own a Blade CP Pro and I think that the quality of its plastic parts is really inferior to the quality of the T-Rex parts. I also think that you don't have to have all the best servos and gyro if you are at my proficiency level and if you are on a budget, but again, in the long run, it maybe more cost effective to go that way.

RE: T-REX or blade 400 ?
I think a Honda Minivan is good quality and it is a reliable daily driver with a reasonable price tag. The Blade CP is not expensive, but it is a cheap and low quality heli that flies almost decently. Replacement parts are way too expensive and low quality, and until we get more independant reviews, I expect the Blade 400 will be the same. A Lambo is a temperamental beast that is very expensive to maintain, with a ridiculously high initial cost. The T-Rex, although it's certainly not cheap to buy, is not unreasonably priced. It is a good, reliable, solid flier that is quite easy to maintain and replacement parts are good quality and not too expensive, even in the case of the plastic version.

If they keep delaying the availability of the Blade 400, you will not want to move up from it in a few years, because it will be brand new.
